September 2, 2026 Returning to Massachusetts after two years of being in Scotland was a welcome change for Clarence, though it didn't come without a great deal of baggage. He'd had half a mind to retire after what had happened, but he had decided against it after all. Going back to Ilvermorny was his better option, all things considered. A number of students from Hogwarts had made the move across the Atlantic in the months since alongside the students who had previously attended Ilvermorny, and he was looking forward to being able to assist them with that transition, at least.
It felt incredibly strange to return to his old office without the items he'd taken to Hogwarts that had been lost in the fire—but better material things than losing his life. Having conversations with grieving families as they tried to wrap their heads around how the students had been put in such danger while at Hogwarts had been difficult, to say the least. Ilvermorny, Clarence hoped, would be better prepared than ever to avoid anything of the sort. They had enough on their hands with a school nearly full of students who had survived at least one tragedy—if not multiple.
The first full day back to school had gone well enough, though Clarence knew that it would take time for everyone to adjust to life at Ilvermorny, including the youngest students who had been spared all of the moving around and trauma. Clarence had returned to his office after dinner, relieved that he didn't have any administrative work to do that evening. Instead, he was simply reading the newspaper, though he was drawn away from starting the crossword puzzle by the sound of a knock at the door.

▲ Summer had been...stifling, to say the least. Packing up the flat that she and her siblings had lived in the past two years whilst in London had been difficult. Monday was staying and working over there too, and not all of Charlie's friends from Hogwarts were attending Ilvermorny this year either. Not to mention how much time her parents had spent the summer months keeping an eye on all of them like they were going to spontaneously combust and die at any moment. Maybe not the best comparison given what happened, but it felt like that. The only highlight was that she'd finally been able to spend time with Alfonso, her snake and best friend, for the first time in two years. Allowing him to coil around her arms and torso was the most therapeutic thing in the world, and she was pretty sure her mom thought the snake had killed her at one point when Charlie accidentally fell asleep with him still wrapped up around her. Hanging with her snake was probably the only cool thing about the summer, but he had to be left behind again when it was time to head off to Ilvermorny. The magical schools seriously needed to reconsider allowing pythons as pets. Not that it mattered now that she was in her seventh year, but for the next kid that wanted to bring their friend with them. Being back at Ilvermorny was simultaneously strange and liberating. Settling back into Wampus was a shock after living underground in Hufflepuff. But Ilvermorny was still the same old Ilvermorny. And she slipped right into her old haunts and habits immediately. Comfort was of great importance to her, especially when there was a lot of crazy in her life. Helping the Hogwarts students out in the same manner they had done with her during her first year there was the least she could do. And there was someone else she needed to thank for the end of last school year. Finding the office again after two years was almost a task in itself, but eventually Charlie found where she needed to go some time after dinner on the second day of the semester. Knocking on the open door, she licked at her lips to make it so she wouldn't stumble over her words. "Hi, Professor Corntassle? If you aren't busy, I was wondering if it would be okay to talk to you for a few minutes..."@clarence ● 408 ● Song by Artist MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

September 2, 2026 It was strange enough to process everything that had happened since he was last at Ilvermorny; Clarence could hardly imagine how uncomfortable it must have been to be a student caught up in it all. He'd spent decades of his life at Ilvermorny and knew the school inside and out. Getting back to life there wasn't hard, per se. It was just different, another reminder that the passage of time affected everything.
At his door was Charlie Weekly, a Wampus student—as he once had been—in her final year of school. He wasn't going to fault her for calling him "Professor Corntassel" rather than just "Clarence"; all the students who had been at Hogwarts had gotten accustomed to so many formalities. He didn't mind the interruption, either. It was bound to happen, and her question about wanting to talk to him for a few minutes made it sound like she wasn't there because there had been yet another emergency.
"I have time. Come in, Charlie," Clarence nodded, setting down the newspaper on his desk. He stood, conjured up a chair in which she could sit if she wanted, and placed it across from his desk chair.

▲ A chair was summoned in front of her and the desk, as she asked if she could speak to him. It had been a while since she'd had an actual sit down like this with a teacher that wasn't going to be about her aspirations after school. There would definitely more of those down the line too, as she already had them listed on her schedule for the coming months. Her career choice had basically been secured, having written the magical wildlife rehab center over the summer about possibly interning after she graduated. It seemed like the biggest no-brained to her, considering that it meant she had a place to live already (not that something like that would ever be a problem for her) and knew the Hogsmeade area well enough. A job there would be a dream come true. But talking graduation and life wasn't the intent with approaching Clarence Corntassel today. She took the seat, feeling herself sink into it immediately. Straightening up on the edge of it, she quickly figured out how she wanted to go about this. "I wanted to thank you for back in May. I don't know if I could have gotten Monday out of there without you or Professor Zabini being right there." Obviously the teachers were just doing what they were supposed to do in such a situation, but the two of them had really stuck in her memory as the ones that had been closest to her when everything went down. She intended to do the same with the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor once she graduated and made it back to London, but for the time being had sent a letter to him in thanks. The same could be said about the French girl who had prevented her from eating the food that night. Between the three of them, they had allowed her to get Monday out of the castle safely. @clarence ● 322 ● Elvis Song by Maisie Peters MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

September 2, 2026 Charlie sat down in the chair that he'd placed across his desk for her, and Clarence sat back down in his own chair once she was seated. "I wanted to thank you for back in May," she said. "I don't know if I could have gotten Monday out of there without you or Professor Zabini being right there."
Clarence nodded his head slowly, as though he were mulling over what Charlie had told him. He knew it was what he had needed to do at the time, but what he had done was to assist Blaise Zabini, primarily. Blaise was the one who had taken that initiative. In truth, all he had done was follow what Blaise had requested of him. It was sort of sad, in a way, that even that would lead to his being thanked, but Clarence understood Charlie's point. Even though he wouldn't have dreamed of it, he knew that he could have just left at the first sign of trouble. It wouldn't have been particularly easy, though, and answering why he hadn't stayed would have felt ridiculous. Because he was an old man, possibly? Some people might have tried that, but getting as many students out alive as possible had been the goal.
Still, they hadn't managed to save everyone, and that continued to haunt him. Hearing Charlie's gratitude did mean a great deal. She had been able to get her older sister—a former Ilvermorny student who had finished school at the end of the previous year—out of the Great Hall at Hogwarts and to safety somewhere beyond the castle.
"Thank you. I appreciate that," Clarence replied, his voice remaining calm. His tone kept a slight warmth without becoming outwardly emotional. "I hope you and your siblings are all doing well?" He knew to approach the subject with caution, making sure to the best of his ability that what he said wouldn't reopen any wounds. Rebuilding the students' sense of safety (and their trust in the school's faculty and staff to keep them safe) would take work above and beyond making sure that they were ready for another school year.

▲ She could have guessed that Clarence would be appreciative no matter how she got it across, but it was important for her to do it in person. This sorted out the months of worry that her parents had over her going literally anywhere outside the house, and it was the best thing to do to put an end to that night. “Yeah they’re all as ridiculous as always. Monday stayed in London to work at WitchTV…” Charlie started excitedly before tapering off near the end. There had been moments over the summer where everything was fine and then the events of that night would flood back. Replicating how she had managed to hold herself together long enough to get Monday out and then rushing to find everyone else felt impossible. Not all families had been as lucky as hers though. The odds should not have been in their favor, considering where they were all located when the fiendfyre broke out. And yet here they all were, safe and sound somehow. Being vulnerable was apparently okay now but she still felt guilty for only worrying about herself and her sister. Everyone else in the Great Hall had ultimately fallen under the protection of Clarence and Professor Zabini though she didn’t know about that until much later. Shaking her head as if to snap herself back to reality, Charlie repeated herself, “They’re all fine now. Maybe one of the most relaxing summers we’ve ever had.” Which sort of happened when your parents barely let you go anywhere without them tagging along. Having them around didn’t really solve the problem if another dark wizard attacked, but that was beside the point. “Hopefully yours wasn’t too exciting either?” she asked, realizing that it sounded worse than she meant it to be. Too late for that. Clarence probably knew what she meant by it. @clarence ● 309 ● Eggshells by Diva Bleach MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
