Andrew Ethan Astor-Shaw
WAND 13½, ebony, unicorn hair, rigid
APPEARANCE Andrew is around average height at 179 cm/5’10”. His build is very average as well—he isn’t necessarily skinny, but he has no extra weight either. Andrew can never be caught dressing down. He isn’t necessarily following trends, but wishes to be presentable in any situation. He always smells of expensive cologne and has his hair styled in an intentionally messy way—the type where not a single strand of hair looks out of place. His designer clothes are most often muted in color—browns, grays, off-whites and such. He isn't that big on accessories, though you'll always find a simple gold necklace around his neck, and sometimes a fancy watch strapped to his wrist. | pronunciation an-droo as-thur shaw nickname Generally dislikes nicknames, the only ones who might get away with calling him anything other than Andrew are his siblings and mother age & birthday 21 13.10.2006 gender & pronouns cis man, he/him blood status half-blood sexuality demi-pansexual face claim Charlie Rowe | |||||||||||||||||
PERSONALITY Intelligent and rational Andrew might initially come off as quite serious and distant, though that is definitely not the whole truth when it comes to the man. He simply takes a little time to warm up, and maybe he could be described as a little wary of strangers. However, once you get to know him, he turns out to be what could only be described as a mom friend—kind and caring, but maybe just a little too eager to offer his help. Though what holds true of this distant and calculating first impression, is that Andrew does tend to follow his head rather than listen to his heart. He isn’t exactly an emotional person, or rather he does not know how to handle his own emotions, and thus will try to apply sense into any situation instead. This might lead to him not seeing every angle, and cause him to miss many possibilities and explanations for different situations. It would be best for everyone if Andrew learned to understand emotions a little better, as he has a tendency to worry about things he’d be better off leaving alone. He always wants to be on top of everything and feels anxious if there is something he knows he doesn’t know everything about, which has ended up giving him the reputation of a bit of a control freak. This concern over literally everything applies especially to Andrew’s siblings and their lives—they’re on the top of the list of people who are the most important to Andrew, which has led to the man desperately wishing that their lives would stay as carefree as they had been back when they had been children. He would literally do anything to ensure that his siblings are okay, even if it means that he has to be the bad guy—after all, he believes that his intentions are all that matter, even if they are misguided by his own blindness to the bigger picture. It could be said that Andrew is stubborn, and there is no denying it. He has strong beliefs, and tends to stick to them. Luckily he is extremely kind, and his beliefs follow his outlook on life, but at the same time his overbearing nature and inability to see the bigger picture make him insufferable from time to time. At least he isn’t above listening to what people have to say, but that doesn’t really help much when most of the time he won’t change his mind, unless the other party has an especially compelling argument that makes sense to Andrew’s rational mind. Andrew’s inflexibility isn’t just limited to his views. Ever since he was a child, he has been finding it difficult to adapt to new situations and circumstances. Perhaps that is exactly why he has such a strong drive to protect what he knows—change has most often brought him nothing but trouble and pain, and instead of realizing that he needs to work on himself, he finds the solution somewhere else. At least Andrew’s devotion to who and what he considers important is admirable, even if it is a blessing and a curse. It does not only apply to protecting what he loves, but across all other aspects of his life as well. He strives for success in life, determined to strive for success in his blossoming career as well—yet his fear of change is holding him back. Though it is the only field in life Andrew has actually found the courage to try and overcome an issue he has. Whether he has actually acknowledged his issues or not, he has taken the first steps towards personal growth in the form of working hard and pushing towards the goals he has set for himself, even though he would rather settle for the situation he knows and is familiar with. ORIGIN & RELATIONS Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California Thomas Astor-Shaw / 50 / Father Adalina Astor-Shaw / 49 / Mother Alora Veda Astor / 30 / sister, whose existence is unknown to Andrew ____ Astor-Shaw / 19 / brother AMY ESMA ASTOR-SHAW / 18 / sister Amelia Astor / deceased / grandmother who Andrew never met HISTORY Friday the 13th of October 2006 wasn’t unlucky for one particular British couple living in California. That was the day Adalina and Thomas Astor-Shaw welcomed what was supposedly their first child into the world—at least that was what everyone around them was made to believe. Growing up as the oldest of three siblings, Andrew got up to many shenanigans with his younger brother and sister, Amy, though if any of them had to act as the voice of reason and be a buzzkill, it always was Andrew. Andrew’s early childhood was happy and stable. His family’s wealth ensured that they had a comfortable life, and he got used to a lavish lifestyle from an early age. Though despite having everything material he could hope for, he lacked friends. His siblings were his best friends, and Andrew would barely speak to the other kids in the neighborhood. When it was time for him to start attending Ilvermorny, Andrew found himself struggling. Without his siblings, the quiet and shy boy had a hard time making friends. The other children found him a little weird, and most of those who gave him a chance quickly decided that Andrew was annoying. It didn’t help his reputation that he was extremely high-strung being so far away from home and the people he loved, causing him to cry at the most minor inconveniences. At least he grew out of his shyness and sensitivity as the years went by, but the reputation still stuck for a long time. Despite his struggles at school, not all of it was a disaster. Andrew was always at the top of his classes for one reason or another, be it the fact that he was a quick learner, or because he found comfort in studying. When his social life was a mess and he was homesick, at least he still had his curiosity and drive for personal growth as a young wizard. Those were the lines along which Andrew’s years in school went by, though his social skills improved a lot, and he even managed to build some confidence. This made his last year in school a little easier, as it was spent at Hogwarts thanks to the vandalization of Ilvermorny. Going to a foreign country to study at an unfamiliar school was intimidating, but he took comfort in the fact that his younger siblings would be going there too. Surprisingly, Andrew wished to pursue a career in politics. It was quite a wonder for many who had known Andrew since he was a child, but that timid little boy had grown up to be a strong-willed, intelligent young man. So after his graduation Andrew found a position as a secretary for an ambassador of the MACUSA. It wasn’t the most glorious work, but it gave him the opportunity to get his foot in the door. He had to start somewhere, right? After nearly three years of following the ambassador around, Andrew finally got an opportunity to move up. A minor MACUSA diplomat had gotten a promotion recently, leaving behind a vacant position. This diplomat had been involved mostly in discussions concerning minor matters with the British Ministry of Magic, and now this position was offered to Andrew. He gladly took it, being quite familiar with the work of a diplomat by now. Despite his success when it comes to his career, the recent years have not been entirely free of worries for Andrew—finding out that his little sister had decided to go to Hogwarts to pursue further education instead of going for the promising internship that had been talked about unsurprisingly worried Andrew. But no matter how much he tried to reason with Amy, feeling like she didn’t understand the scope of the situation and was making a stupid decision based on nothing, her mind was already set and there was no convincing her otherwise. Now he is trying to keep in touch with her as much as possible, still wondering why Amy would pull such an odd move, completely out of character. As a newly appointed diplomat, Andrew is still trying to fill the shoes he was given. He is a little young for the job, which often causes some raised eyebrows at meetings, but Andrew’s competence is quickly apparent by his quick wits and vast knowledge of all kinds of topics. He closely keeps up with politics of the wizarding world, naturally, but not just because of his job, but also out of genuine curiosity. Though yet again, the thing Andrew has found to be the most difficult about his career is being so far apart from the life he knows, but this time he is determined to build a good life for himself.
