The Monsters walk among us Grey’s eyes followed his friend’s hand as she pointed in the direction of the restaurant. And there it was, up the street and its sign in plain view of everyone. How had he never seen this place before? It stuck out like a sore thumb among the other businesses in the area. The sign was blatantly obvious as well, and yet this was the first time that Grey had seen it. Slightly shaking his head at his inability to notice the restaurant before today, he continued down the street towards it. “I find it hard to ignore muggle tech these days. It’s pretty impressive.” Grey wasn’t a huge muggle culture fiend, but he had his moments when it came to their technology. The magical world functioned perfectly well with little interference from their non-gifted neighbors and he had always wondered what would happen if the two worlds combined into one. Obviously this would never come to fruition but there had to be some type of improvement that muggle technology could make on witches and wizards everyday lives. For now they just had to accept that the muggle world was vastly changing around them at a rapid pace. Following up his last statement, he continued, “It’s a shame that school doesn’t allow phones or computers. That would beat having to hand write out all the homework.” As the two continued towards the Chinese restaurant, Grey let out a huge sigh. Just imagining how much work he would have this upcoming year was tiring. If only he didn’t have to go, and could just be done like Rai. On the other hand, the working world might actually be more exhausting than Hogwarts was. He sighed again. “Is being an Auror fun? I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and I might try to get into the training program after graduation.” The thought of being an Auror was exhilarating, but worrying at the same time. They were there to do what no one else in the magical world could do. It wasn’t a pretty job. At the same time, it would give Grey the excuse to help people out, which was something he had always strived to do. And there was the added bonus that he could bug Rai and his sister all the time. Surely a job title like that would look good, and his parents would at least acknowledge him for it. Plus he had enough ins with both Rai and Claire already in the program. It was always good to have people to vouch for your skills and work ethics. “What do you think I should do?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

She nodded as he said that it was hard to ignore muggle tech. "I know. I wish we could just all work together, to be honest," she knew that was a pretty unpopular opinion but Grey was making it clear that he didn't care. He went on to say that phones and computers would be useful at school and she turned toward him, nodding. "I know! I can't believe we have to cramp up our hands with quills when the muggles have progressed so much farther. It's a bit... medieval if you ask me." She had thought about this for a long time, how the muggles and wizards could really benefit from each other... but she could see the dangers too. As Grey let out that big sigh Rai's eyebrow arched at him. Then he sighed again before sharing his thoughts. At his words she stopped walking, turning to catch his arm with her hands, "I think that'd be amazing," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. This would not be something that she would let go of, now that her mind had grasped the idea. "I think you'd be brilliant at it, Grey. Trust me," she tightened her grip on his arm for a second before letting go and continuing forward, "I mean, if you think you can keep up with me and Claire," she turned to toss him a wink along with a sticking out of her tongue before turning into the restaurant as they arrived. "Table for two!" she said happily and they were soon led back. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us By the time Grey had finished his inquiry about what the Auror life was like, and whether or not he should go through with the training, his gaze had shifted to the ground, staring at his feet as they unconsciously followed Rai to the restaurant. It wasn't often that he took on a serious tone like this, the only other time he could recall being when he had decided to reevaluate his work ethic at school during his fourth year, and proceeded to take the whole magical education seriously. That time, Grey had relied heavily on his older sister's guidance, something that he had mostly dismissed during the first three years at Hogwarts; and now he was turning to Rai for help. He knew there were two ways his question could go: first, Rai would playfully laugh and tell him it'd be fun to have him around again, just so their crazy antics could continue, albeit in a controlled environment this time. The other was what he would consider the odd outcome, one where Rai would take the more serious route and encourage him to join because he would be a good fit in the program. Grey would take either one of course, but he hadn't exactly expected Rai to react the way she did. "Thanks. That means a lot coming from you," he said, looking up just in time to see the switch from serious Rai, to her usual happy-go-lucky self, accompanied by a wink and a signature tongue stuck out at him. "I'll probably surpass you in my first week. Count on that," Grey retorted as the two entered the restaurant and were led to their table. "What can I expect during the training? Because if it's just dealing with you 24/7 then I might need to reconsider my career choice already." And just like that he'd returned back to their normal banter. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai simply shrugged modestly as he said it meant a lot coming from her. She meant every word and she had good reason too. She knew underneath the apathetic exterior that he was passionate and wanted to do good. Sure, she was way more obvious and up front about it but she liked to think that he was the same way. That he found joy in doing the right thing and trying his best. At his joke about surpassing her in the first week, she faux glared. "The only way you'll pass me up is into the next life," she laughed for a second and then realized that may have been a bit tasteless. She bit her lip and widened her eyes as if waiting if he was going to get offended by it or not. At his next jab about what training was like she laughed, "it's worse," she pretended to shudder as the waiter approaches, asking what they'd like and whatnot. "I'll be taking the bill," she told him before turning to Grey, "order whatever."After the waiter was gone she leaned back, giving a shrug, "but, in all reality, it's hard work. Really mentally, physically and emotionally intense. It's nothing I can't handle though, but you... Eeeh," she held up her hand and rotated her wrist to emphasize the joke. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us “If we have a repeat of last year, you never know.” Grey shuddered at the thought of getting picked off by someone before he even got the chance to help others as an Auror. The events of the previous school year were among the many reasons he wanted to become magical law enforcement. There was too much evil in the world again, and there had to be people to stop it. “Those bad guys might get jealous of my dashing good looks and try and snub me out before the world gets the chance to fall in love with me,” he said, doing his best impression of a male model as possible. “Anyways, I’m sure I could take a few out with me if it came to it.” Hopefully that day wouldn’t come before he got a stab at being an Auror. Sure, he had some decent dueling skills for Hogwarts, and he had held his own against Rai and numerous other friends over the years, but Grey wasn’t bred to fight. He was looking forward to expanding his arsenal of offensive spells within the next few years. “I get next time then.” Grey said as he ordered a few things off the menu. Taking the check would probably turn into their new form of competition, since it was kind of frowned upon to duke it out in the middle of the streets. Listening to Rai explain the Auror training, it wasn’t exactly surprising to him that there were certain “difficulties” to the job. Aurors were trained to be the best of the best, so they needed to be able to pass all sorts of tasks that would put a toll on their bodies. Being both the protectors of the people and law enforcers of the magical world was a strenuous job that wasn’t meant to be taken lightly. “Listen, I might have the emotional range of a teaspoon and infantile physical strength, but it’s nothing that a few push-ups here and there can’t fix.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai frowned when he mentioned last year and how she could actually lose him to death if those things started happening again. She turned away momentarily, not actually wanting him to see the negative emotion on her face. She let out a long breath before Grey started his joke about the bad guys being jealous of him and the world falling in love with him and whatnot. She smiled again, turning back toward him in time to catch that male model impression, "wow, " she reached across to squeeze his bicep, "I don't know if anyone could resist that," she laughed anew, pulling her hand back to her side of the table as he said that he could take a few out with him if it came to it. She nodded, "I have no doubt that you could. If I got stationed at Hogwarts then we could do it together," her stomach lurched happily at the idea of being stationed at Hogwarts. Back in a place she loved with friends, former classmates and Grey. She doubted they would put a newbie like her there, thought. Especially not since Hogwarts was incredibly dangerous last year. But, the Minister was pretty set on sending more Aurors to Hogwarts then ever before so the possibility was there. Rai wasn't surprised that he called to pay next time, and she didn't argue. She, like he, guessed that it would be a new form of competition and the thought caused her smile to grow again. She leaned forward as he answered her comment about him not being up to par. She laughed, which wasn't a surprise, she did that a lot. "I bet we could get you there. Might take more than a few push ups," she said, biting her lip to hold back another giggle. "I mean, therapy could help with that emotional teaspoon issue."grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us “Don’t get jealous if you’re stationed at Hogwarts. I’ve heard rumors that there’s quite a few ladies that fancy me.” This was a farce of course, most of that attention had been sent in Kyle’s direction over the last few years, and it was more common than not for the girls to approach Grey about it first, to make sure his friend wasn’t already in a relationship. Apparently playing Quidditch was like spraying pheromones in the air. Plus Kyle seemed to be relatively popular with his gossip column in the school paper. All of that was passed by Grey first, and the majority of edits made were also of his own creation. Kyle just had the original ideas and earned the credit. That paper belonged to Grey. It was brainchild. He couldn’t wait to be back at school and start it up once again. There were always great stories for the first few weeks, and with the lack of Quidditch matches and other activities, everyone paid attention to their more tabloid-esque side of the paper. That was where Kyle reigned as king of all things gossipy and juicy. Leaning back in his chair, Grey slightly tapped the table as the two waited patiently for their food. “I’m honestly more worried about getting decent enough grades at the end of the year. Potions is going to be the death of me.” He may or may not have had a tendency to get on the professor’s bad side during his first few years, and while Grey had made efforts to do better in class and end up at N.E.W.T level, there was still some deep-seeded distaste for each other. Plus it was 7th year, it was time to slack off a little and enjoy what was left of school. There was no way to back after this, unless he found an illegal time turner somewhere in the school. Now that would be a story for the ages. “I’ll do fine in the end, just trying to get the nerves out before they jump me at the end of the year. How’d you do on them anyways?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai gave a scoff when Grey told her not to get jealous because 'quite a few ladies fancied him'. She leaned back, "who knows, maybe I'd be a good wing man," she laughed, placing a hand over her heart. She could see the difference between his and Kyle when it came to the ladies. Kyle seemed to be ore popular and he played Quidditch which... well, Rai couldn't understand why Quidditch boys got a lot of attention. She didn't okay but watching the game was one of her favorite things. The adrenaline, the competition, she liked being there for everyone and cheering them on. Admittedly sometimes she got a bit wild when it came to being in the crowd... something Finn never hesitated to make clear. The conversation switched to Grey's worried about making the grades and Rai nodded, eyes wide with agreement. She nodded, "oh, you're right, you'll do fine. I did pretty good," actually, she did better than good, but she didn't want to go on about that. "You just have to stay confident, you can do that. It's good to get your nerves out ahead of time," she leaned forward placing her arms on the table. "Listen, just focus on studying but staying calm this year. Seventh year is fun, but it's really the most important year and most seventh years forget that."grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us Grey let out a small laugh when Rai said she’d be a good wing man. He’d like to see that one day, she might end up scaring more potential love interests with her high powered energy than helping him out. That thought alone was enough to bring a smile to his face. Seven years of being cooped up with the same people ended up driving everyone crazy by the time graduation came around. Rai had been exactly the same since the day they met, so he could count on her being at some level of comprehensive sanity. Everyone else, well, let’s just say that love seemed to drive the rest of the school crazy. It was usually toned down in the fall, but the minute everyone was back from Christmas break a total shift occurred inside Hogwarts’ halls. He had done his best to avoid it thus far, focusing on trying to sleep and get his studies down were more important than finding a girlfriend. Kyle would probably say he was stilly for not living life while in school, but Grey had enough friends, like Rai and Kyle, to fill that void. “I mean, I had kind of planned on blowing up one of the remaining towers at school instead of studying. Thought it would leave a lasting impact.” Grey said sarcastically. He knew getting high enough grades was key if he wanted to be an Auror. That rule, in general, was rather ridiculous, since being accepted into the program should be purely based on merit and skill. Written tests only prove that someone is book smart or knows how to test well. Jobs that involve dealing with situations on the spot can never be tested on paper. Sure, Aurors ended up going through rigorous training that could be constituted as real world experience, but prior to that? More than likely most trainees had never dealt with a problem that wasn’t related to school. Tipping his head backwards and staring at the drop ceiling, Grey continued, “I wish I could just skip the tests and start training right now. Then we could hang out all the time like this.”

She rolled her eyes as he said he had planned on blowing up the towers rather than study. Hadn't there been enough of things blowing up last year? Still, she smiled, "I'm sure you can leave a better legacy than that. Plus, Albus Potters already claimed blowing up towers," she wasn't meaning to make fun of Albus, but was simply pointing out that it had already been done so there was no reason to try and make a legacy off of it. She knew he was only being sarcastic though but that didn't make it any less true. He spoke about wishing he could skip the tests and start training and how doing so would make it so they could hang out all the time like this. She felt a small lurch in her stomach, probably due to the hunger. He was looking up at the ceiling, something that Rai was used to. That is, his not making eye contact when he was saying something serious. She wasn't sure if he was aware that he did this and she wasn't about to point it out to him. "Actually, they're being less strict about grades now," she started to explain, but then the food showed up and she waited a moment and thanked their waiter before going on. "Anyway, the Minister is pretty set on bulking up the department and they've been a lot more lenient. The training is stricter, but it's easier to get in."grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us He continued staring at the ceiling, listening to Rai as she continued to talk. That’s right, Potter did blow up one of the towers. Grey wasn’t exactly fond of the eldest Potter boy, their ideas on what constitutes as “fun” were vastly different, and they never saw eye to eye. He still couldn’t figure out what made Rai different from Potter though; they both were high energy, fun-loving people. Maybe it was because Rai didn’t feel like she needed to live up to her name like all of the Potters did. Either way, the constant pranks and ridiculous behavior would finally be gone from the common room, and whilst slightly nostalgic, it would be welcomed, especially because he would need the peace and quiet to study more this year. “If I could become a house-hold name over Potter…that would be the day,” he said jokingly. Surely he and Kyle could find a way to be remembered other than as dude with a color for a name and hot blonde guy that plays Quidditch. Because right now, that was exactly what they were sitting with. A low grumble resonated from his stomach as he listened to the shuffling of waiters and other customers in the restaurant. As if summoned by magic (and maybe it was some deeply rooted magic that anyone was yet aware of), their food arrived at the table. Snapping his head back to the table, Grey thanked the waiter after Rai did, and continued listening to her explain how the Auror program had relaxed their grades for trainees. “That’s good to know. Hogwarts hasn’t exactly told any of us looking into the program about that. They probably want us doing our best no matter what, in case training doesn’t pan out like we thought it would.” Grey had already developed a backup plan in the chance that he wasn’t cut out for being an Auror. “If I bomb the tests, I always have the Daily Prophet. Not too glorious, but better than nothing.” His pedigree as an editor-in-chief for the school paper would surely land him a decent job at one of the wizarding newspapers. While that wasn’t exactly as exciting as being an Auror, it was still a decent job and definitely less life threatening. Plus he could have the status of being one of those “scummy” reporters that the general public makes them out to be whenever they reported on something controversial. He had already seen it happen at Hogwarts. They were just doing their jobs, nothing more, nothing less. “Keeping my hopes up though. Much rather fight the bad guys with you and the others,” he said grinning, before digging into his food. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

She smirked as he mentioned becoming a 'household name' over Potter. She always thought it was a little sad how a lot of families all placed in one house. It made sense though with the whole nurture side of the 'nature or nurture' debate. "You got one year. Plenty of time," Rai was perfectly content not being known as a legend or anything like that. She just wanted to be the person cheering the legends on, really. She was perfectly fine with being on the sidelines. When it came to the Auror stuff, she wasn't in it at all for the glory. She was in it for doing the right thing, saving people, being part of a team. She didn't play Quidditch, so she didn't really have a lot of experience with team work in an organized place. It was nice to be a part of that. "Yeah, I think school would prefer it if you still did your best," she agreed. "The training is hard, but I think a lot of people would be capable of it if their heart was in the right place," she shrugged. She really felt that if you set your mind on anything you could do it. Your mind and heart, that was. It was hard to get anywhere successful with only one or the other but especially with neither. She nodded at his words about a back up plan, the Daily Prophet. She had read his articles at school, of course. He was good, he knew what to say and how to say. Plus, his lack of fear in that regard was a good thing to have. "The press fights the bad guys too," she countered, digging into her own food in between speaking, "it's just more subtle. It would be nice to have you. Have you asked Claire about it?"grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us Rai was right. One year was plenty of time. And at the same time, it really wasn’t. If seven years of schooling could go by that fast, then one single year would, for lack of a better phrase, be gone in the blink of an eye. He was sure that any sort of reminiscing on years gone by happened like this, when in actuality, a year was a long amount of time. School being over would be a change of pace though, so he had to make sure he made the most out of this year. There was no going back after this, unless he was an employee or assigned there as an Auror. Taking another bite of his food, he listened intently as Rai described the training program again. He was kind of glad that it wasn’t as difficult as he had heard. Plus she had mentioned earlier that they had become more lenient. Grey wasn’t sure if that was the best option that a law enforcement agency should take, since that basically let anyone try to get in. Some of those Aurors would probably end up as a liability one day because they won’t be the best choices for the job. “Having heart is great and all, but they also need to be able to do their job correctly. I think there are some instances where raw skill is way more important than heart will ever be.” Grey wasn’t sure if he truly believed that or not, but it kind of slipped out regardless. He thought that what might start off as heart or passion for the job would eventually turn into learned experience and the skill he was talking about. For some, that might never happen; others right off the bat. He secretly wished it was the latter. “You have a point about the press. Never really thought about it that way.” Grey paused for a moment to reflect on what he had done as the editor-in-chief of the school paper so far. As far as he could recall, nothing too hard hitting. The paper had been practically blacklisted from reporting on the events of the previous year, for good reasons of course, and they had been “encouraged” to produce articles that would help the students forget about what was going on. He didn’t like the idea of being forced like that, but he understood the reasoning the school had behind it, and was able to push his club to do the same. “The Daily Prophet could be quite the jump from the silly little tabloid we have going at school. Definitely would be a nice change of pace.” First and foremost was getting the grades necessary for Auror training though. The Daily Prophet gig should be an afterthought at most, and if he absolutely needed to go there for a job, he would be an instant hire simply because of his experience at Hogwarts. Grey slightly fidgeted in his chair as Rai asked him about Claire, and whether he had talked to her about being an Auror yet. That was going to be resounding no. He had tried to keep his sister out of it for the most part. It wasn’t really her business anyways, and she was busy enough as it was, being a newer Auror and all. They definitely had their work cut out for them right now. Grey hesitated before answering Rai, still not sure what to tell her. “Not exactly.” He paused again, trying to gather his thoughts. “Kind of figured I’d make it a surprise for her, ya know?” Actually, it was more that he wanted to do everything on his own, without his sister’s input on it. He appreciated her help, but when it came to him making his own life decisions like this, Grey preferred to keep her out of it. “I brought it up to her a few years ago, when she was joining, and she just…well, you know how she is. She’s a little full of herself sometimes.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai shook her head as he commented about having a heart and doing the job correctly. Obviously she knew that but she let him go on with his thoughts. She had learned a long time ago not to inerupt people, and she wouldn't want to interupt Grey anyway. She wanted to here what he had to say. He was right, but he didn't seem to fully understand what she had meant. "I mean if their heart is in the right place their capable. As in they're more capable to learn the skills and things needed in order to do the job correctly, you know? If you're heart isn't in something then it's not really worth your time so you won't do that well," she beleived that, "but I'll have to disagree with you on that last one. At least in some cases. Love as strong powers, Grey," she said, pointing her chopstick at him to add to her point before going back to eating. She nodded as he said that she had a point about the press, glad that she could get him thinking about it differently. It really was a noble thing to do she thought. She just wasn't as good with words, so that was nowhere in the cards for her. She nodded, "maybe you could do auror training and send in some articles on the side? The Prophet is pretty interested in what everyone has to say, especially someone in the thick of it liked you'll be," yup, she didn't say would be because she was pretty dead set on making this happen. If he changd his mind of course she'd support that buuuuut she hoped he wouldn't. It would just be better this way! It made sense to her. Rai honestly wasn't sure that she completely understood Grey and Claires relationship. She liked both of them and cared about them, so it really didn't occur to her that the tension there was anything to worry about. Still, the way he spoke slowly and shifted in her chair caused her to slightly regretting asking about it... she nodded to his words, not really believing that he was telling the whole truth of his feelings but that as okay. "Awe, I'm sure she was just worried about how young you still were back then," she really wasn't sure about that at all but it was better than accepting that maybe Claire had been a bit cruel about being better than him. Rai took another bite, then chewed and swallowed before speaking again, "she'll love it. Or learn to," she added. Claire really was rather good at her job, but Railynn really thougnt Grey could be just as good. "Guess we'll have to do a little practicing?" Rai said with a smirk, raising her eyebrow in order to give that lighthearted air once more. grey xavier slater
