@river Rusti was walking through the hallways, and she wasn't really looking for River. But when she saw him she always felt her heart lift a little, just like with Dusti. Not when they were in the same room though that was just unpleasant. She saw River and smiled at him, a special smile she only gave to her siblings, and lifted her hand up to say hello. True he was with Vi and Rusti didn't care for the girl but she wasn't about to ignore River. But when he saw her he didn't wave back or smile or come over and give her a hug. He didn't say hello, or ask her how she was doing. He gave her a head nod. Rusti felt the smile fall from her face and she stopped walking, her eyes following her brother long past where they could see him. Was that... River? Hence why she had asked him to meet her in the hallway outside the Ravenclaw common room. She needed to know what was going on. Was something wrong? Did this have something to do with what he and her father had been doing all summer long? She hoped not, but wasn't letting her hopes get too high.

River felt sick as he passed Rust in the halls. He saw her, with her sweet smile and the wave and he felt his stomach sink. he wasn't sure that Vi would really encourage the behavior he normally did when he saw his sister. Runnig up, hugging her and holding her hands as he talked with her. He didn't know how Vi would feel about that and seeing as he was walking with her... well, that was why he just nodded at Rusti and kept walking past.
He wasn't surprised that she asked him to meet her later. He sighed when he got the message, feeling incredibly stupid. At the aforementioned time, he stepped outside of his common room, seeing Rusti pretty quickly. he crossed over to her hands in his pockets, "hey, Rust," he said casually, He dreaded what she was going to say now.

@river River came out from behind the statue and walked over to her. His hands were in his pockets, head down so he wouldn't have to make eye contact. She leaned forward so she could look at his face. "River are you alright?" she asked softly, sweetly. She had ten thousand other questions she wanted to ask him, but this one would elicit the best and most true answer from her brother. He wasn't acting like himself, he hadn't been for a while and it was making Rusti worried. Had someone made him change in such a drastic way that he couldn't even say hi to her? But she realized her question wasn't complete. So she added to it just a few moments later. "is something wrong?"

He wasn't surprised at her question as she leaned forward, forcing him to make eye contact. He sighed, nodding slowly. The sound of her voice was enough to case his knees to go weak, like she was breaking down those defenses he had walled up. "Everything's fine, Rust, come on," he sounded a little annoyed, but that was only because he didn't want people to notice his act giving way to his sister. He cleared his throat and straightened up again, "why do you ask? Are you okay?" his voice had actual concern, of course. Hoping to turn the attention to her...

@river Rosaria noticed his evasion of her question. He shrugged it off as if he was uncomfortable answer it. There were a few people around them, but not many. And the sound in his voice, like he couldn't believe she would even ask that, clued her in that something was wrong. When he turned the question back to her, the worry in his voice soothed a few of her concerns, he couldn't hide that worried tone in his voice. "No, nothing is wrong with me. I'm fine." as fine as she could ever be. Though for some reason she did have more hope than she normally did. She wondered why that was. "But we are talking about you, River." she said softly. "something is wrong, isn't it?" She felt her worry escalate, this macho act wasn't him. She clasped her hands together in front of her to keep her fingers from fidgeting nervously, something she did often to maintain an air of "elegance" as he mother would put it.

Rosaria said that nothing was wrong and River sighed with real relief, giving her a soft smile, but it didn't last. The way her voice sounded, though... she was clearly not happy. He could easily guess why, of course, but he didn't want to talk about it. He didn't want to have to own up to himself and who he was trying to be. He couldn't stand to. He was on a mission, an agenda... he couldn't give up just because of one sister.
She changed the subject back to him tactfully and he tried to hold steady. Her worried face was started to stress him out, his hands were getting clammy. He shook his head, "everything's fine. I'm just glad you're doing well." He held firm for another moment before, finally, letting out a breath, "just trying to shake things up?" he said, feigning innocence.

@river Rosaria could see the emotions flick across his face. Relief, worry, shame, happiness but not true happiness. She shook her head. He was hiding something from her. "Shake things up? How?" she asked confused. If shaking things up meant completely changing everything about himself than he was doing a bang up job. But why would he want to do that? Did he not like himself? Had she done something? She was almost positive it had something to do with all the training he did with their father this summer. But that only made her more worried.

He held his facade for another moment before sighing, hunching his shoulders over. "I'm just trying to d the right thing, okay? I mean, I'm the only kid in our family who has a chance to-" he paused, not sure how to complete his sentence. He chewed his lip briefly before going on, "I mean to be what we're asked to. I'm not saying it's what I want, Rusti, I'm just saying that I... it's my responsibility," he said those last two words softly, almost as if he was scared to say them out loud. He wasn't trying to insult her, he really wasn't, but this was how he felt. This was why he was doing what he was doing. "I have to marry Vi," he said sternly, "and I'm not going to embarrass her by being someone she doesn't want."

@river His defenses held for a moment then crumbled. He slouched down as if the burden of his facade was too much for him to hold up any longer. Then he confessed what he was doing. He did have point. She couldn't be the daughter their parents wanted, even if she tried. She was too timid, too afraid. But River was becoming someone totally different and all to please other people. "But River, What about you? We both know that she won't ever be pleased with you. You are too... good." she paused. He was Vi's opposite, if there ever was one. Why would he want to become her? "Mother and father will probably be disappointed in us too, even though we try." Because even though she resented her parents, she still wanted to make them proud. And she tried, but still fell short, every time. And even if she told River he shouldn't try to please them, she still would. And so would he. Some how that made her proud and sad at the same time.

Of course the 'what about you' concept wuold be brought up. He slowly lowered his eyes to look down at her feet as she continued, speaking be about how he was too good and how Vi and their parents woudl never be satisfied. Somewhere inside him he knew that was true, of course, but he didn't want to admit to that. He didn't want to admit that all of this was for nothing, "Rust... Don't worry about me," he muttered, finally lifting his eyes to look at her again, "I can't believe that they won't be happy. I have to try. I have to," his eyes were pleading now, as if begging her to see his side.

@river He looked down the entire time she spoke. As if he was ashamed. And when he looked up? His eyes told the real story. He was just trying his best, just like she was. He was trying to be better for their parents, for Vi, pretending they would love him. But... they never would. She could see that he knew that, but was choosing to ignore it. I pained her, making her stomach churn to see him in this situation. It was how she felt. "River..." she said, tears pooling in her eyes. She tried to will them back in, she was going to be strong! But it didn't work. "I know River. I know." she just ended up saying. Thankfully it was just the tears that came, there was no shortness of breath. She was crying in sympathy, empathy. She knew what he was feeling. She knew exactly what he was feeling.

The way she said his name made him ache. The tears in her eyes made his stomach churn. When she said she knew, he finally breathed. And when she started to cry, just softly, he reached a hand out to take hers, "thank you." His voice remained soft and his touch was gentle as he tugged on her hand and attempted to wrap his arms around her in a hug, hoping that she would comply. If she did, he'd hold her for a few moments in silence before speaking again, "I love you, Rust," he muttered.

@river She could see some of his stress leave his eyes. He could relax a little simply because someone understood. And she did. If anyone would, it would be her. So when he pulled her into an embrace, she leaned into him. As always, his hugs were warm and friendly. No matter what exterior he wore, he would still be her brother. She had to know that. Her crying didn't escalate beyond tears. She didn't often sob. And if she did, it would be in private, where no one would know. After a moment she pushed back, looking up at him with a stern expression. Even though that expression was marred by the last few tears that leaked from her eyes, she hoped he would heed its seriousness. "Become whoever you want for Vi, but you still have to give me a proper hello." she demanded, a smile sneaking onto her lips.

She recieved the hug and he was grateful. After a moment she pushed him back, looking at him with intense eyes and he swallowed nervously. Then she spoke and he grinned, relaxed again, and nodded, "Of course, Rust. I'm sorry. I promise I'll do better just... gotta get used to it all balancing and stuff," he said, placing his hands on her elbows and giving them a little squeeze. "Hi. How are you?" he asked, his own grin turning into a smirk now as he played right off her words.

@river He was still there. Her brother hadn't left and become someone else, even though he was trying. But she didn't know what she would do without him. She squeezed her elbows, giving her a proper hello. He moved back into his arms, hugging him tightly around his waist. "I am doing just fine, Riv. I love you." she said with a smile. That was all she wanted.
