Andy was just settling onto a couch in the common room to study for the night. It was after dinner, already about eight o' clock pm, but she had trouble sleeping anyway since she attacked Nik in secret, so it wasn't necessarily like she was stressing herself out by staying up. She sat down and placed her book bag on the floor beside her and pulled out her Herbology book. She opened it and suddenly a large flower bloomed out of the book. It was about the size of the book from cover to cover, open in her lap. The scent that came from it was incredibly soothing, even more so then the typical lavender or chamomile. Her hands started to shake and she realized she was relaxing so much that all the tears she'd been holding back were threatening to come out. She covered her mouth with her hand, blinking back silent tears but pretty sure she had it under control. That was before she noticed the note in the center of the flower. She pulled it out, 'Each night this flower dies, each morning it comes alive, from across the world I miss your eyes, and count the days til I arrive.' And that's when the real tears came. She let out a short sob before dropping the note and covering her mouth with both hands now. She didn't even notice that someone had been sitting beside her this whole time. grey xavier slater (@philiplongbottom to see :>)

The Monsters walk among us Grey was bored beyond belief. For once in his short life, he had decided to try and do some work that was due ahead of time. It was amazing. That had never happened before. Deadlines meant absolutely nothing to him, other than the fact that work had to be finished before it was due the following day. He thrived off the pressure of completing homework the night, or even morning of, class. There was something oddly rewarding about getting it done that late and still receiving decent marks on it. But that fun little game wasn’t being played tonight, and he needed to get a lot of it done before the weekend, so that he could try and fix his sleep schedule as much as possible. Too many nights had been spent wandering around the castle or grounds, or just aimlessly staring at the ceiling of the common room as couples made out on the other side of the room, unaware of his presence. Grey had lost his innocence to all of that at a very young age, all thanks to his problem. Now it seemed almost common place. Tonight though, he was hoping that doing work would exhaust his brain and knock him out cold. Scribbling down some notes on a piece of parchment, he glanced over his shoulder to see how many people were in the common room. It was oddly quiet, at least more so than usual. As far as he could tell, there was only one other person in there, situated on a couch, other than himself. He couldn’t see who it was from his little table in the corner, so he decided not to pursue talking to them, instead returning his attention to the text book he was reading, still jotting down information he found useful on the paper next to it. After a few minutes of silence went by, the only sound coming from his quill and the fire place, Grey thought he heard noise coming from the other person. He looked over his shoulder once again to see what they were doing. It was pretty common place for people to giggle their wee little brains out when they thought they were alone in the common room; Grey had done it numerous times. As he contemplated standing up just to see who it was, what he thought was a laugh actually sounded more like crying, or at least muffled sobbing. Something of that sort. Rolling his eyes, Grey debated what to do. If he was quiet enough, he could probably grab his things and sneak back upstairs without the girl noticing, that way she could deal with whatever she was crying about on her own. Of course, that meant she would have to deal with whoever walked in on her next. At the same time, he could confront her and see what was up. The main problem with that was he was starting to feel like it was commonplace for people to confide in him; all the while crying on his shoulder. He didn’t mind it when it was Addi, rightfully so since a lot of the anguish his sister had been through was caused by him. But he was sure he didn’t really know this girl, and it wasn’t exactly his right to talk to her about it. Regardless, Grey thought it was better than being the asshole that walked away from a crying girl, and spoke up. “Uh…are you okay?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

At the sound of a voice startled her and she looked up, eyes wide as she took in what was happening. Grey Slater, a guy in her own year, was sitting there and had been for who knows how long. She bit her lip hard, hidden by her hands, and willed herself to gather her bearings. She turned away, looking down at the flower again before slowly lowering her hands and taking out a handkerchief (always the proper princess) and dabbing at her eyes until she was able to make the crying stop completely. This only took a few moments, she was well trained in shutting off her emotions. She turned back to Grey with the faintest smile, her eyes still red, of course, that part was harder to erase. "I'll be fine, thank you," her tone was polite even if it still had that bit of 'cry voice' entwined in it. She gestured to the flower in her book, "my boyfriend, sending me silly messages, I mean," she realized that was a dumb reason to cry, or at least a dumb reason to tell Grey. It was part of it, naturally, but so was the fact that she was letting Phil down every second she didn't come forward about what she'd done... it was also the face that she didn't deserve someone like him and never had. So many other reasons, too, things she'd bottled up. She pushed those thoughts aside, not wanting to lose her cool again. "I mean he's studying in Brazil this semester. Philip Longbottom, you know," Grey would know who that was, probably, since they were all in the same year. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us She was going to be fine? Randomly bursting into tears in the middle of the common room didn’t exactly fall into the category that Grey considered “fine”. But everyone was different, and that was something he seemed to forget a lot. He had learned that some people weren’t like him when it came to emotions. Grey was practically a brick wall unless pressured into a situation where he lost control. Then it was like all the stops were pulled out and everything would go downhill from there. He wasn’t sure where that had come from, because Addi was extremely emotional, or at least good at showing them, and Claire seemed to bottle everything up and do her job diligently, like the model child she was. That was enough of him though, and now this girl, who turned out to be Andromeda Lestrange, was talking to him. He really should have escaped when he had the chance. Like most of his fellow seventh years, Grey had never formed any kind of friendly relationship with Andromeda, and it seemed more like quite the contrary. Grey couldn’t recall a time they had even acknowledged one another, other than maybe passing by one another in the common room or on the way to class. Strange how that was so easy to do, especially for him. He had started to realize more and more over the last few weeks that there was a handful of Gryffindors in his year that he simply didn’t care about, and now they were all here, somehow inching their way into his life one by one. Here they were though, seven years later, talking for what was probably the first time. And it was about why she was crying. Grey didn’t understand why these things seemed to follow him everywhere he went. At least it wasn’t because of him this time. “Ah…that’s great of him to plan those out in advance.” Grey wasn’t exactly sure what to say. She didn’t seem like she needed to be comforted at all, since it was more of an emotional reaction than a random outburst like he had initially thought. “What prompted him to study abroad? If you don’t mind me asking…”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Andy wasn't usually one for showing emotion either, so this entire situation was pretty much a nightmare for her right now. She was stoic, cold even if someone tried to approach her. But, sadly and gladly, this year she had started to change. She had made friends, found feeling and lightened up a bit. The hard part about that was, she wasn't sure what to do with all of this new stuff going on inside her head. Caring about people other than herself, showing that love, missing someone... it was all new it her. And new was freaky. Andy nodded at his words, knowing this whole thing was entirely uncomfortable for the both of them. Then he asked what prompted Phil to go and she smiled softly, "they specialize in Herbology over there," she explained, "he loves Herbology. It really is a great opportunity," she nodded. Then she took in a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment. When they opened, her brows were knit slightly, "sorry about being incredibly awkward over here. Especially since I'm pretty sure we've never talked," Andy had learned that getting to the point just made things a lot easier and, hopefully, less traumatic. "Call me Andy," she said, offering a hand out to him. "I'd like to formally introduce myself," she was also raised to be polite and even know she didn't use it much before she still had the knowledge and training embedded in her brain. Plus, may as well reach acquaintance level since she'd already cried in front of him, right? grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us So that’s where Philip had been. Grey had thought it was kind of weird that the Headmaster’s kid wasn’t presently at Hogwarts. Unfortunately, Phil was another one of the seventh years Grey had never had the pleasure of talking too much, so the premise that Phil was studying Herbology abroad in Brazil was completely foreign to him. It was starting to show how much he actually cared about his fellow Gryffindors, especially when he was meeting half of the ones in his year right at the end of it all. “Can’t say that I was ever that good at Herbology. I like the outdoors, but not that much. But good for him for following his passion, right?”Grey didn’t exactly expect her to apologize for crying. There was really no reason to do that. When you had to do it, you just did it. He wasn’t big on the whole crying thing himself, punching walls seemed to be his emotional release. Maybe a switch to crying would be a little less…harmful. “No need to apologize. I thought about slipping out of the common room at first, but figured it’d probably be more awkward than this was if someone walked in and saw you crying.” Had they really never talked before? Grey was sure they had classes together, and that she had been there all seven years so far. Even Phil and Ranger had conversed with Grey once or twice, but Andy, as she wanted Grey to call her, apparently didn’t think they’d ever introduced themselves to one another. “I’ll be honest, I don’t think we’ve talked before either. I’m not really one to go out of my way to talk with people unless I need to.” He watched as she put her hand out to shake his. Usually he was the one to initiate that, this might have been a first. “Grey Slater.” He said as he shook Andy’s hand. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Andy smiled softly as Grey mentioned his lack of an affinity toward Herbology, "I don't consider myself as expert, but I guess I'm proficient enough. But yeah, we're all pretty proud of him," it was weird saying we, even after close to a year of living with the Longbottoms. Andy chuckled softly at his admittance that he almost left when she had started crying. "Well, I'm impressed you stuck around. I don't' think I would have," she admitted with a little apologetic look. Andy nodded as he explained that he didn't go out of his way to talk to people, "well, I went out of the way to not talk to people. So not a good mix for meeting," her smile grew more honest and less just for politeness when he took her hand. "Grey, nice to officially meet you," she said, shaking it. She chuckled softly as she pulled her hand away, "this is weird, isn't it? Been at the same school, same common room for almost seven years..." she shook her head, her brow furrowing slightly, "anyone else you haven't actually met yet?" her question was laced with an amused tone, but also a bit of worry of who else she hadn't ever spoken to. grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us Was it really that impressive that he had stuck around? There were definitely more admirable people in Gryffindor than Grey was. Sure, he had his moments here and there, this one now being one of those exceptions. It was completely different if she had asked for his help of course, since then he would feel obligated to sit and listen. That seemed to be more common for Grey, especially this year. “I’ve had a few shining moments of decency I guess,” he said awkwardly, scratching the back of his head at the same time. Regardless, it wasn’t like she had been torn apart by a recent breakup or anything of that magnitude; Grey knew he wasn’t equipped to handle that kind of emotional trauma. He had always found it hard to get invested in someone else’s business like that, unless it ended up helping him out in some way. His encounter with Cecelia in the Prefect’s bathroom earlier in the month had followed that strain of thinking. By talking to her, he had managed to wiggle out of the punishment he should have been in for breaking into the Prefect’s bathroom. Today though, there really wasn’t any benefit to stopping and talking to Andy, at least not from what he could tell so far. “Nice to meet you too.” He understood her reasoning for not wanting to talk to people even without knowing her. Grey had always felt that it was meaningless to spend time talking to someone over silly things that had no purpose. Hence the reason he always came across as rather cold to some people. It wasn’t intentional, and if they kept pressing they’d eventually realize that was just the way he was at the beginning. Either that or he had just woken up from a nap and didn’t want to talk to anyone yet. There was always a reason. “It is a little strange…” He knew there were others in Gryffindor that he had never talked to, or barely put the effort into. “I’ll be honest, I’ve probably only talked to Phil a few times, and the same goes for Ranger. And we’ve lived in the same dorm for seven years now.” Grey didn’t know what to think of Ranger as of late, and their little confrontation was more than optimal in his mind. “So I’m sure there’s quite a few others in Gryffindor that have slipped by me. I was so busy hanging out with the older students that I completely forgot about everyone in our year.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Andy offered a complimentary chuckle as he spoke of his 'shining moments of decency'. He didn't seem entirely convinced, though. She was sure that he had more than just 'moments', or at least she liked to think so. She didn't really used to think the best of people, but she was trying to get better at it. Thinking, and even hoping, that this was a common thing for Grey was something she needed to put into her mind. She was trying to grow, change, make friends, be a friend... thinking good of people included that. Her smile remained in place as he said it was nice meetin her too, and she nodded when he agreed that it was strange that they were just talking. "Oh, yeah, were you friends with... oh dear," she frowned, "I can't remember her name. Sorry," she made an apologetic face. "I was too busy keeping to myself. I actually live with Phils family now," the Longbottoms had adopted her last year, "and that makes being social a little more... well, necessary I guess. They're pretty popular people." She shrugged, unsunre if he would really even care about that but wasn't part of making friends? Sharing? grey xavier slater

The Monsters walk among us “Finn and Rai.” Grey almost blurted out as Andy looked like she was struggling trying to remember their names. She really seemed to be out of the loop. At least that was what it looked like to him. He had the ability to somewhat remember people’s names. Most of the time he just didn’t care about them enough to remember their faces. Names he was good at though. “You might see them around at some point this year. They’re both training to be aurors and got assigned here for the tournament. It’s kind of funny seeing them back at school, but not actually attending classes.” When he had spotted them during the entrance ceremony, it was like all of his dreams had come true. Sure, they both had to work now, but it wasn’t like they could goof off every now and then. There was no way their superiors could take them that seriously anyways since they were still in training. Plus, how couldn’t they possibly think bringing back recent graduates wouldn’t cause a problem here or there. That was begging for something to happen. “No worries. I understand the not really knowing other people thing. Sometimes it’s just too much effort.” Grey laughed awkwardly as he scratched the back of his head. Wasn’t that the truth though? It wasn’t easy to admit that to a normal person, since they didn’t really understand it. He was pretty sure Andy would though. “I can see how that might be a little difficult, avoiding social situations and stuff.” So the Longbottoms had adopted her and she was dating their son? Interesting. Funny how talking to someone for the first time resulted in so much new information. Besides Phil, Grey couldn’t recall ever talking to Professor Longbottom either. He was sure he had taken Herbology at some point, but that was either first or second year, not really recent in the slightest. Despite being the kid the wandered the halls at night all the time, he had avoided getting in enough trouble that warranted a trip to the Headmaster’s office. Grey counted himself lucky because of that. “How much different is the Headmaster at home compared to here? He seems pretty laid back. If you don’t mind me asking, of course.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Finn and Rai. Yes, Finn was friends with James Potter, she remembered that. She remembered nothing about Rai. She nodded as he explained that they were both stationed at Hogwarts as aurors. She wanted to be an auror actually, up until this summer when she realized she had a knack for healing. She smiled softly, "I bet you're a bit jealous that they don't have to go to class then," she guessed, "but you're glad they're here?"
Andy nodded in agreement as he said he understood the effort of knowing people, and she laughed awkwardly along with him. "Effort wasn't really the main issue for me, though. It was lack of caring," she shrugged, giving a bit of an apologetic look. "But I guess that's part of that," she added.
Then he asked about the Headmaster and she shook her head, running one hand of fingers through her hair, "hah. Well, not that different really. He cooks there, though. Loves making breakfast," she smiled, one of those rare genuine smiles again. "He's pretty much the same, though. I mean, he's not always laid back... he's just level headed," much more than she was. "And I know you must be thinking my situation is weird," she added slowly, "and it is," she laughed.
She dropped her hand into her lap again, "and what about you? What's your life like? If you don't mind me asking, of course," she smirked, repeating his same words.

The Monsters walk among us Jealous? A little bit. There was a simple solution when that came up though; he just didn’t go to class, or fell asleep during them. He was more than positive that a lot of the professors still wondered how he was passing classes, let alone was in NEWT level ones. The Gryffindor was simply good at getting work done quickly and efficiently and paying attention in class was a luxury provided only to the classes he liked. In other words, Charms and Transfiguration. “I’m happy they’re here. At the same time though, they’re here to work, so being professional and adults come before messing around with me.” Despite being overwhelmingly happy that they both had come back as security, Grey knew the limitations that had been placed. The only times he really saw either of them was during meals, and even then they weren’t exactly supposed to fraternize with the students too much. Being a trainee meant nothing to the actual aurors. They were all there to act as guards and a security force, not to play around with their friends and family. So they were fundamentally different on the aspect of interacting with others. Interesting. Grey had always assumed that others like him, ones that didn’t have too many friends or preferred to be on their own, were either content with their small friend groups and didn’t want to try harder, which is kind of what he considered himself to be. Lack of effort or not, caring was a different story. It was fundamentally close to not putting the effort forth to make friends, but there was something deeper to it that he didn’t understand. “It looks like that’s changed though.” Grey pointed out. “Not saying that it’s better than it was, but I’m sure you’ve noticed the differences.” He wondered if it had something to do with being adopted by the Headmaster’s family. Grey had no idea what her situation was before that, but it didn’t sound like it was the most suitable way to live. There was something about the way she described the Headmaster though that tipped him off that things were starting to look better for her. He wasn’t sure how to explain it, mostly just one of those things that came instinctually. “Maybe it’s weird, I don’t know. Family is family though. Sometimes I think the people actually related to you can be worse than say an adopted family or friends. Just my thoughts on it.” If that wasn’t the pot calling the kettle black, he didn’t know what was. Grey had noticed lately that the life advice he was giving out to others was probably more beneficial for him to follow than anyone else. All he had to do was stop being stubborn, break the deal he had struck to not talk to his sister, and everything would be back to the way it was before. Funny enough, the next question Andy asked him happened to be what his life was like. Grey had a hard time holding back a snort. “Well, it’d be wrong for me to say it was perfect, because it’s far from that. I’m not on the best terms with my older sister, and I kind of botched things up with my younger one the other day too. Maybe you saw her punch me in the face the other day in the Great Hall. The girl can punch hard for being so little…” he trailed off, trying to think of more positive things to say, but couldn’t really find anything. He was somewhat tired of talking about the Triwizard Tournament with everyone, so he specifically wanted to leave that out of the conversation. “Other than that, I run the school paper, drink more coffee at breakfast than is probably healthy for me, and I like sleeping during class. It’s a fun life.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Andy nodded as he said he was happy they were there, but that he had to deal with the whole 'professional adults' issue. She chuckled softly, "I'm sure they're having a hard time with that," she guessed softly. She didn't know them that well, but the transition would be hard for anybody, wouldn't it?
Then he mentioned how maybe she had changed, that she did care, and she glanced back at the fireplace. He might have been right, of course. Well, she knew he was, but it was a weird thing to think about too deeply. The type of person she had become. "I have noticed," she said softly, before turning back toward him, "I live with a lot of good examples. Home and here included," she added. It was because of the Longbottoms and her friends she had now that she was trying so hard. Maybe too hard. Maybe that's why she was going crazy deep down. She didn't dwell on that, though.
He talked about how family is family, and how the people you actually are related to can be worse than adopted family and friends. She nodded, "oh, well I definitely know that's true," she said. He spoke about his family then, his sisters. She frowned at the mention of her punching him and shook her head, "I didn't see it, no. That sounds...complicated," she deduced, "I'd like to punch my brother sometimes," or, you know, tie him to a chair and cut him open with a knife. Sure. Oh wait, she did that already.
She was glad when the subject changed to the school paper, coffee, and sleeping during class. "Well, you sound... busy, yet not," she chuckled again, "what do you like to write about?"

The Monsters walk among us Rai and Finn were definitely having a hard time being adults. It wasn’t hard to see that. Those two had probably taken very few things seriously in their lives, ever. Being aurors, especially ones in training, had to have been difficult given the circumstances of being sent back to Hogwarts. He liked to think that it was almost like an alternate reality to them. They were in a place that had been their home for the past seven years, where everyone they knew and cared about was at, where they had studied, everything, yet at the same time it was different because they weren’t students anymore and they were expected to act like adults. “I think they are.” He let out a small laugh, realizing that he would be in their shoes the following year. It was doubtful that he’d be reassigned to Hogwarts duty for training, but if they were still worried about security, it would happen. Things had to be serious if they were stacking normal aurors, like Claire, into the halls just to make sure the students were safe. He wasn’t sure if he had touched a nerve or not with the comment about her possibly changing. That seemed to be the thing to say to someone who went through things like that though. She had described herself as lacking effort, and if that had still been true, she would have completely brushed this conversation off. He started nodding his head as he glanced around the common room, “This lot isn’t too bad,” Grey said, indicating the Gryffindors. “There’s a few I could do without, but I know they have my back if I need help, and vice-versa.” That seemed to refer back to Finn and Rai again, but there were a few Gryffindors he still had to help if he needed it. Most of those relationships that had been “broken” were seemingly being fixed this year. “Yeah, family is complicated sometimes.” He let out another small laugh, thinking again about everything that had happened. “You should punch him. It does wonders.” The punch from Addi had definitely helped him figure out what he had done wrong. There should never have been a need for that to happen, but it did, and now he was ready to go back to the way things were before. “Busy is subjective, I think.” He wasn’t sure what to call his life. Relaxing? Lazy? It was somewhere between the two of those, yet not at the same time. If they picked up a scoop at the newspaper than life could be hell, or if he had forgotten about a potions test the next day. It all depended. “When I joined, the editor-in-chief put me on Quidditch duty. I like watching, so it became my specialty I guess.” He shrugged his shoulders. The past two years he had editor duties to take care of, so his position had been passed off to other members that were interested. “But now that I’m the boss, it’s a little hard to find the time to write anything. So, I leave that up to everyone else.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Andy nodded as he laughed, conforming that his best friends were having trouble with adulthood and whatnot. "Well, are you proud of them, though, nonetheless?" she asked, sure of what his answer would be. She was proud of Natalia for going on to healer training. She was proud of Alice for pursuing her dreams, not that she'd ever say a word to her adopted sister about that.
She nodded again as he suggested the Gryffindor lot wasn't to bad and how there were some he could do without. She understood that feeling. "Yeah, it's a good crowd. And family is... also good. Sometimes," she agreed with a slight chuckle. Then he suggested punching her brother and she felt a sharp pain in the back of her head. Oh, she had punched him all right. And cut him. And beat him. And tied him to that chair. And all the while it only made him prouder of her and that made her sick. She turned away from Grey, back to the fire, "you have experience with punching brothers?" she asked in a mutter.
Andy was only half paying attention to his answer about being busy and what he liked to write about. She shrugged, turning back to him after a moment. "So, you mostly just edit now," she deducted.
