overall personality:
natalia’s personality was not self-determined, but rather molded by her upbringing and her circumstances. her family’s insistence on traditional pureblood values impressed upon her the importance of being seen and not heard, and as a result, she’s a habitually quiet person. she’ll speak to her family and her closest friends, but not many others. she’s demure and polite, the epitome of a pureblood daughter. natalia is trying to change that, not necessarily because she wants to be more talkative, but because she wants to improve her social skills, which have always lagged. there are specific people she’s interested in getting to know better, however, so perhaps it’s a bit misleading to say she wants to improve overall. natalia is also looking to separate herself from certain people – most notably, her parents. after suffering the cruciatus curse at her father’s hand, natalia has no love for her father, or the family that he made her a part of. she doesn’t want to be a lestrange any longer, and some of her more recent personality changes have been motivated by that.
while she’s quiet at most times, natalia has gotten better at speaking out when someone is in need of a defender. she can be surprisingly passionate for someone who is normally quiet, and it’s beginning to show more and more when she does speak. when she speaks, natalia knows what she’s talking about, so once you do get her talking, it can be hard to make her stop, especially if it’s a subject she’s passionate about. certain people can egg her on a lot more easily than others, though those are normally the people she spends most of her time talking to in the first place. debating with natalia is dangerous because of her fierce logic and broad knowledge base.
lately, natalia’s been a lot more snappish than usual. she’s had a hard time sleeping and her patience tends to run a little thinner. she’s lost a lot of her composure, enough so that even total strangers would realize she’s not the same person that she used to be. with support from others and her own newfound confidence, natalia is hoping to be able to move on from the past that has shaped her so cruelly, and step into being the person she wants to be, rather than the person that her parents expected.

history:
on the last day of march, when the month went out like a lamb, natalia lestrange entered the world in her typical fashion – quietly. she wasn’t born at the hospital; rather, her parents opted to have their child in the comfort of their own home, the lestrange estate. her parents were never extremely strict, but they believed in traditional pureblood values, most of which encouraged them to keep their children at an arm’s length. the rules in the lestrange household were set before natalia was even born – they were first established with the birth of her older brother, nikolaj. her parents didn’t strongly believe in corporal punishments, but the rules were expected to be followed even without the threat of a beating.
her childhood was spent in etiquette classes, as she learned how to behave and how to interact with other purebloods. she was promenaded around in fancy dresses (and she had to admit that she did enjoy the dresses quite a bit), more like a showpiece than a daughter. nat was more than happy to be a showpiece when she was little, because it made her parents happy. it wasn’t that difficult for her to stay quiet and in the background while her parents talked.
the opportunity for natalia to go to hogwarts came when she was eleven years old, just as it came for every other witch and wizard before her, and would continue to come for every one after. just as they always did, her parents gave her instructions: stick with the slytherins and the purebloods, the children that she had gone to parties with for the past eleven years. stay away from anyone with the surname of potter and weasley, and stay away from mudbloods. they were simple enough instructions; natalia fully expected to be placed in the slytherin house, and avoiding a few people with strange last names wouldn’t be difficult.
surprisingly enough, when the time came, natalia was not sorted into slytherin, which was atypical for her family. she was instead put into ravenclaw, where there were few people that she knew, and even fewer that she trusted. getting used to being in an unexpected house, and getting used to being at hogwarts, period, was difficult for natalia. she had grown so accustomed to being told what to do and when to do it that having such a large measure of freedom was difficult to swallow. classes were good for her, because they gave her structure, and they also gave her something to do when the other children were talking or playing. she read voraciously, consuming any material that was put in front of her.
her first summer back at home was strange for natalia. at school, she had been encouraged to speak up when she had ideas, but at home, she was hushed whenever she tried to interject in her brother and father’s conversations. the mixed signals were confusing for natalia, but she knew which environment she preferred; she liked speaking up, and the freedom that came with sharing knowledge at school. she began to doubt the efficacy of being quiet and demure, and of pureblood society as a whole.
as the years of school wore on, natalia became an even more focused student, and she ascended into higher and higher levels of reading. it was rare that she not get an o on her essays. while she excelled academically, her social skills continued to fall short; she didn’t know how to talk about anything other than studying, since she was distancing herself from pureblood society and didn’t want to use that as a fallback conversation topic. her o.w.l.s were predictably top-notch, but natalia didn’t stop there. she couldn’t. there was a brief respite when she hit puberty and her mother insisted on spending the summer teaching her how to dress herself and do her hair and makeup, but otherwise, natalia was back to the studying grind.
when her seventh year of school came, natalia found that there was simply nothing else left to read. every book in the library had been read, even the ones that weren’t particularly appealing. she didn’t dare ask her parents for more material, so that left natalia with a surprising amount of free time, and the chance to explore what being a teenager was really about. she found some friends and even went to a party. she was no social butterfly by any means, but natalia was beginning to break out of her shell.
and then james potter walked into her life. natalia remembered what her parents said. she tried to avoid him, she really did, but he was charming, and determined, and everything she never knew she wanted. her parents would never know – it wasn’t like there was anyone to tell them. things started to go wrong before natalia had even gotten used to them growing right. there were killings, and it was only natural that the relatives of a known death eater would be suspects. natalia tried to take the high road and ignore the people antagonizing her and whispering comments in the corridors, but after a time, it began to wear her down. she would have been fine, but whoever was killing simply wouldn’t stop.
when the killer struck again, natalia and her younger sister, andromeda, were pulled out of school until their safety could be assured. having to spend time with her parents again meant that natalia had to put on her mask – quiet and stuck up. after a while, the mask began to feel more natural than it ever had, even when natalia returned to school. all of the positive changes she had made in the past year were gone, and natalia couldn’t help but despair – everything seemed to be going wrong.
just as things always do when you think they can’t get any worse, they did. natalia’s father found out that she had been hanging around with james potter. he had always been supportive of her endeavors, though he kept a polite distance between them. that all changed when he found out her interaction with james. he was angry, angrier than natalia thought was possible. her father forced her to take truth serum, and pried her more romantic feelings towards james out of her. natalia suffered the cruciatus curse at her father’s hand for the better part of an hour. she was driven to the brink of insanity, though he never managed to push her over the edge. there was no permanent physical damage from the curse, and her mind remained intact, but natalia found herself unable to sleep without nightmares and unable to eat without feeling nauseated.
natalia has tried to convince herself that her torture was a blessing in disguise, since it drove her into the arms of the longbottom family, who more or less adopted her and andromeda. while having a new family was helpful for natalia, it didn’t erase everything bad that happened to her. she took a position as a healer in training at st. mungo’s, but getting her dream job didn’t feel quite the same as she imagined. natalia is now working on building herself a new life, piece by broken piece.
