Anna was being so kind to him about everything, and Oscar couldn’t help but wonder how awkward this situation was for her. She hadn’t known Caden, and she couldn’t possibly understand what it was like to have someone ripped form his life so completely and so suddenly. But she was trying, and Oscar didn’t know how to thank her without sounding like a total idiot. Anna apologized again, for something that was most definitely not her fault, and Oscar felt something inside him snap. “Can I…Can I hug you again?” Oscar asked. His voice cracked on the last word, and he didn’t wait for Anna’s response before throwing his arms around her. He hid his face in her hair, not wanting her to see that there were tears beginning to streak down his cheeks. When they had hugged each other earlier, Oscar had just thought about how close he was to her, but now he was thinking about how far he was from everyone else that he loved. He didn’t know what to do. He was hanging onto the world by a thread, and that thread looked an awful lot like a certain redhead, and he didn’t know how to tell her that he needed her. Hugs were so much simpler, so much easier, and the fact that they hid how horrible he felt was just a bonus. Oscar’s illusion was ruined when he let out a soft sob, pressing his tear-stained cheeks into Anna’s neck in an effort to hide himself from the rest of the world.

Oscar was silent, quiet for the longest time and Anna didn't know what to do. Did she say something wrong? Did he want her to give him some time so he could compose himself? She really had no idea what he wanted, or even what she wanted ... except for the fact that she wanted to be there for him. Was that going to be too hard? Would he let her? She bit her lip as she forced herself to wait for him to say something. When he finally did, he was asking to hug her. "Of cour-" Anna started instantly, but she didn't have the chance to answer him fully before his arms were wrapped around her. Anna wrapped his arms around his waist, trying to hug him back. Obviously he wasn't angry at her for anything and Anna was glad. His head was burried in her neck and he was crying, shaking as he did so and Anna just held him tighter. She didn't know what else to do. "I'm here, Oscar. For what it's worth, I'm here for you," she muttered after a while. She wanted him to know that she wouldn't judge him for this, that she wanted to support him.

Oscar had a history of breaking down in tears. When his mothers died, it had been his adoptive father’s arms that he had sought. When he, too, died, it was Caden who held him. And now Caden was dead, and Anna was his comforter, and Oscar was desperately afraid that in letting her comfort him, he was condemning her to the same kind of death, which only made him cry harder. He was clinging to Anna, clinging to her in a way most human beings had never experienced. She said that she was there for him, and Oscar made a soft noise halfway between a sob and the words ‘thank you’. He didn’t know how long it was before his sobs stopped, before he stopped shaking, before he stopped hurting. When he did, though, he withdrew from the shelter of Anna’s neck. He knew that he probably looked a mess, with his eyes red and puffy and his hair every which way, but he didn’t care. Anna wouldn’t judge him, because she was Anna, and she was his best friend. “I…” He began. Halfway through thinking the word love, Oscar stopped himself. “Thank you for everything, Anna.” There was no other way to thank her for letting him cry on her.

Anna held him for the longest time. She couldn't pull away, she wouldn't. Oscar needed someone, it was obvious, and since everyone he knew and loved couldn't be here for him, she would be. She wasn't going to leave. He tried to say something to her, but she couldn't understand what it was and she wasn't going to ask him to repeat it. After the longest time, he pulled away and Anna looked in his eyes nervously. He thanked her and Anna shook her head, "You don't need to thank me, Oscar. I'm here for you, just like I'm sure you're here for me, right?" She was trying to make him feel better. She didn't want him to feel guilty for relying on her. She wanted to ask if he was all right now, but she couldn't bring herself to ask the question.

Oscar nodded when Anna said he didn’t need to thank her. That wasn’t the truth – he was going to thank her every day, for being his friend, for being there for him – but arguing with Anna wasn’t something he wanted to do. “Always.” He whispered. Oscar paused. “I should go back to the carriage.” He could clean himself up before…whatever meal was next. He didn’t know what that was, but Oscar knew he would feel better when he looked better. “I will see you soon, Anna.” There was no way to avoid being around her anymore, especially since she was now irrevocably the most important person in his life. Oscar wiped under his eyes one more time, and then turned tail to return to the carriage.
