Edmund nodded, "Well that sounds really cool. I hope you can get into one of them. I'm sure you will be able to." He'd seen her play, even played against her. She was really good. Surely good enough to make it into professional Quidditch.
That made more sense. Edmund didn't know a lot about her father. He'd heard some stories about Fenrir, and from the stories he could understand why people might be concerned. But Jamie wasn't anything like him, from what he'd heard. Granted, he didn't know her very well, but he didn't think people would judge her according to her father. "Well, they shouldn't judge you on who your father is either. After all, it's not like he raised you or anything." Obviously. He could tell that she didn't like her dad, which wasn't a surprise to him at all. "Do you think he's really going to?" Edmund couldn't help but ask. "Isn't he in hiding or something?"

Edmund had a lot more confidence in Jamie than Jamie did, and she shrugged when he said he was sure that she’d get onto one of the teams. She didn’t want to seem like she was fishing for compliments, so she didn’t say anything to the negative, but she still wasn’t sure how things would go. She would see.
“Kind of hard not to.” Jamie said with a shrug. She still wasn’t okay with it, of course, but she could see where people were coming from when they thought she was an awful person. They didn’t know that he had had no part in her upbringing. It could be assumed, after someone met Jamie, but until that point… “I don’t know.” Jamie said with a sigh when Edmund asked if she really thought her father would return. “It’s one of those things I’ve had in the back of my head since I knew who he was…” Jamie shrugged again. “And I guess it just seems right that he would show up just when I was sure things couldn’t get any more complicated.”

"I guess so," Edmund agreed hesitantly after a moment. He hated how people judged one another based on their upbringing. Actually, it was one of his pet peeves. He felt like he was frequently being judged because he was a muggle-born or because in the muggle world he was royalty. Those weren't things that defined him, they were just a part of who he was. If anyone wanted to really know him, they needed to know more than his magical lineage and the members of his royal family. They had to talk to him.
He listened carefully, not really sure what else he could say, but trying to be supportive all the same. It sounded like Jamie was going through a hard time. Honestly, he didn't know what that consisted of, but it sounded like she needed to talk. The thing was, she didn't seem like the kind of person who wanted to talk to a stranger. "Well I hope if he does come, it's after things have settled down a bit," Edmund commented, not sure how that would be received. "So what do you think about us having the tournament here?" he asked when he couldn't think of anything else to say.

Jamie snorted when Edmund said that he hoped Fenrir came back after things settled down. That was the problem – things never settled down. They appeared to, but there was always something brewing just beneath the surface. Jamie felt like she never really got a break, and she was beginning to be exhausted by it all. When Edmund asked about the Tournament, Jamie rolled her eyes. “Sick of talking about it.” She said dismissively. She was sick of having to explain that she only met her brother because of the Tournament and she had almost destroyed her relationship because of it, and also that whole thing about how her sister tried to kill herself the night the Champions were selected. As far as Jamie was concerned, the Tournament was just a waste of time. Maybe people would say she was a victim of sour grapes, but she just wanted one normal school year, and she thought she deserved that much. It wasn’t like any of the foreigners wanted to talk to her anyways. “You?” She returned. She doubted Edmund would care, considering he wasn’t even eligible to play, but who knew.

Edmund was a little surprised when Jamie said she was tired of talking about the tournament. Then again, she was a seventh year, so she’d probably put her name in the goblet and not gotten chosen. Which meant she was most likely disappointed about that. Also … wasn’t the Durmstrang champion a Greyback? Ed was almost positive that Jamie was probably related to him somehow, but it really wasn’t his place to ask questions and he wasn’t sure if that was something she would want to talk about either.
Edmund shrugged when she asked what he thought about the Tournament. “I don’t know. A part of me wishes it happened next year or that I was a year older, but there’s no point in wishing for that because it won’t change anything. I’m interested to see what the Tasks are. I think it’ll be cool to watch and the Ball should be fun.” Wait. Did Edmund just say that the Yule Ball was going to be fun? “Please don’t tell Lucy I said that,” he said, assuming that she might know his sister since they were in the same house. “I would never hear the end of it.”

Edmund seemed to have a more mature view about the Tournament than most of the other younger students, Jamie thought. She hadn’t heard much directly from the younger years, but it sounded like a lot of them were disappointed that they hadn’t been able to enter. At least Edmund realized there was no use in wishing for things that were unchangeable to change. She nodded along when Edmund said that the tasks ought to be interesting, but smirked when Edmund said that he thought the Yule Ball would be fun, and then doubled back and said Jamie wasn’t allowed to repeat that to his sister. “Your secret is safe with me.” She promised. Jamie considered mentioning Max, and how she probably also would never fess up to being excited for the Ball, but then decided against it. “Are you taking anyone special?” Jamie asked instead. “I’m going to make my sister go with me.” There. That was a more casual way of mentioning Max, while also making sure Edmund got to say something about his ball plans around someone who actually knew he was excited for it.

Edmund nodded, satisfied when Jamie said that she wouldn't tell anyone. Not that he really expected her to go back to her common room and seek Lucy out, but it was nice to know that he wouldn't have Lucy storming up to him because she found out that he lied to her and actually was looking forward to the Yule Ball. He nodded his head when Jamie asked if he was taking anyone. "I'm taking Addi," he told her. "I asked her at the beginning of the year so neither of us would have to stress about it," which was technically true. The fact that they were now secretly dating wasn't that important, was it? "Are you excited to go with her?" he asked curiously, wondering if she really chose to go with her sister or was going with her because she felt like she needed to. Not that he thought she needed to. And he wasn't actually going to ask about that, so it didn't really matter.

Edmund was taking Addi? Well, at least she wasn’t going with Kyle, Jamie thought to herself. It had been a while since she had heard anything about Grey’s friend, but if she never had to hear anything about that boy again, then Jamie would be happy. “Well, that’s nice.” Jamie said, even though she thought that it was silly to ask someone just for the convenience of it all. She wanted to take Max because Max was her best friend and getting to dance together would be fun, not because she was worried about finding a different date. “I am super excited!” Jamie enthused. “She’s not normally the one to wear a dress or enjoy getting to show off how beautiful she is – and she is, if you ask me – so I think it’ll be fun to get to see that side of her.” And also just to get to spend time together, which was harder due to their year and house difference.

Edmund shrugged when Jamie commented that it was nice he and Addi were going together. If she knew him better, she might be able to see his excitement in the way he as actually talking about the Ball without groaning, but it was there. Few would be able to notice it though. It wasn't exactly that Ed was trying to hide how he felt from Jamie, but he was used to keeping his emotions and feelings close to himself. He didn't know how to share them with others openly. He smiled when Jamie expressed how excited she was. "That does sound like fun," he agreed, then hesitated. He was enjoying this conversation with Jamie, but they weren't close and he wasn't sure what exactly he should say now. "Are you ready for Christmas break?" He asked, internally groaning once the words left his mouth. Of course she was! Who wasn't ready for a break from school. Still, he couldn't think of anything else to say so he just left it as it was and didn't try to add anything.

“Yeah, I am.” Jamie said when Ed asked if she was ready for Christmas break. “I guess it’s going to be weird, though, because when I come back, I won’t be able to deny that I’m graduating any longer.” When they came back from break, there would only be one semester left before Jamie graduated and was forced to make it in the world, more or less alone. And that semester was going to fly by, between Easter break and all the Triwizard events and studying for N.E.W.T.s. “Not that I’m not excited to graduate, but I imagined things so differently.” Being a Quidditch player had been the dream that Jamie had hidden from everyone because she thought it was never going to be, but now it seemed the likelier of her two options. And, of course, there were her siblings. When she was a Quidditch player, she would be able to buy things for Max, nice things. It would be a whole different life, and Jamie was looking forward to it.

Ed cocked his head to the head slightly, "Are you denying it now?" he asked, confused. From their conversation so far, Jamie seemed like she knew what she was doing and that she was ready for it. Maybe it was easier to say she was ready than to actually realize that it was happening? Either way, Edmund really wasn't sure how to understand that. "How did you imagine things ... if you don't mind me asking." There was Edmund's polite side. Though some believed it didn't exist, he did have one and he was implementing it right now, though he wasn't entirely sure why. The thing was, he was suddenly intrigued about the why's in their conversation. "I mean, I'm excited for the break, but school is a lot easier and less stressful on this side of Christmas than it is from the other side," he added with a shrug, not wanting her to feel like he expected her to do all the talking.

Jamie shrugged. “I don’t know? Like, I’m not actively trying to avoid my future, but if I have the choice to think about it, I avoid it. And it’s like, even when I do think about it, it doesn’t feel close.” Even though she could now count on her hands the number of months until she was an adult, Jamie felt like she had all the time in the world, which was simultaneously comforting and scary. When Edmund asked about how she had imagined things, Jamie shrugged again. “I never thought I wouldn’t be speaking to my mother. I never thought I’d find the pieces of my heart that were missing, partially because I never knew they were missing in the first place.” Max. Lily. Adrian. They had pieces of Jamie’s heart, and she hadn’t realized it until she had reclaimed them. “I guess it all depends on how you manage time.” Jamie said with a grin. Things were only as stressful as you let them be.

What she said made complete sense. Granted, Edmund had one more year than she did, but in a way he felt similarly. He didn't really want to think about the future, which was one of the reasons why he hadn't decided on a career choice yet even though he knew he needed to. He didn't want to make it real. He was enjoying school. Edmund wasn't quite ready to let that go yet. "That makes sense. I mean, I'm a year behind you but I guess I feel the same, in a way. I'm just glad I have another year to wrap my head around things, even though that probably won't happen." He nodded when she mentioned how things weren't going the way she thought they would. "Yeah, life has a way of screwing with us. Sometimes it's in a good way and sometimes it's not, but from what I've seen, things I'm planning on rarely happen in the way I want." He actually laughed when Jamie said it depended on managing time. Ed didn't normally laugh at things, but that was funny to him. "I am terrible at managing my time," he explained after a moment. "But good at letting things go. So I'll probably stress out for a bit, telling myself I need to do better and then I'll just decide to drop it all." Not that his attitude was a particularly good thing, but it was what it was and he knew he wasn't going to change any time soon.

Edmund seemed to understand at least some of what Jamie had said, which she was grateful for. There was nothing worse than trying to explain yourself to someone and have that go right over their heads. Ed commiserated, saying that even though he still had a year of school left to go, he sometimes felt like his future was right around the corner. “We both have a little more time now, though, so we might as well make the best of it.” Jamie said with a little smile. Moping about how everything was so close wasn’t going to make it go any further away, and they weren’t going to get anything done in the meantime, either.
“I guess that a lot of the screw-ups I’ve had are good.” Jamie said after considering it for a moment. Sure, being with her siblings had caused her a lot of heartache, but the joy she got made up for the pain by far. “I don’t know, though. Maybe it’s about perspective.” Everything tended to get muddled, and looking at it in a new way could help untangle a problem that previously seemed impossible.
Jamie chuckled a little when Edmund said he was awful at managing time. “If you ever need anyone to yell at you to study, I’m always free.” And Jamie could be persuasive when she wanted to. Her Quidditch team listened to her, at least, so she had that going for her. “And then maybe you’ll be less stressed in the long term.” Stressed when she was yelling at him, but not later, when he had too much work and too little time.

He smiled back at her when she told him to make the best of it. "Yeah, I know. I should probably start looking into things more so I can feel more prepared for the future and my options and stuff," he said, bringing the conversation back to the future, to what he was going to do with his life. He knew she was right though. It would work out in the end and hopefully he would be able to figure out something that he would enjoy.
Edmund's head nodded almost automatically when she said that it was about perspective. "I believe that," he told her. "I spent so much of my life being bitter and angry about all the things that were happening. Now, looking back on it I think that if I would have chosen to take a different perspective I would have gotten through things so much better."
Jamie offered to help Edmund focus on his studies and he laughed. "You're joking, but don't be surprised if I take you up on that. I am really good at distracting myself. Sometimes I really need someone to make me study, but most of my friends study the same way I do." If she was willing, he definitely would take her up on that. Especially since his grades were really starting to get important.
