Hugo grinned when she teased her, "Well I never know with you! You have a way of doing the unexpected, Xan." However, it was a relief that they were going with the simple idea of catching snowflakes in their mouths. He could do that, for sure. Whether or not he'd catch more than her ... well, they would just have to see about that. He said three and tipped his mouth up, catching one almost immediately. "Hey!" he shouted when she said she'd already caught three. "You can't count all the sides Xan. Stop trying to be sneaky just to make me dance," he chuckled, positive she would know he was teasing. In the next few seconds he was able to catch five more. "I'm at six," he told her, not stopping while he looked at the oncoming snowflakes and moving so they would land in just the right spot. "How many do you have?"

Xan chuckled when Hugo said she had the way of doing the unexpected. Spontaneity was important, because it made life a lot less dull. It was because of the unexpected that they were out here in the first place, though Xan didn’t point that out to Hugo. “There aren’t three sides to a snowflake, Hugo.” Xan reprimanded him when he accused her of cheating. There were normally six, and she wasn’t sure if she’d call them sides – points was a more accurate term, in her opinion. Either way, it stood that she had only counted each snowflake once, thank you very much. “And it’s not my fault that I’m better at catching snowflakes than you.” She teased. “Besides, I don’t have to do anything sneaky to make you dance.” If she begged enough, he would probably do it without any competition involved at all. When Hugo asked her how mnay snowflakes she had caught, Xan smiled smugly at him. “Eleven.”

"Unless it gets chopped in half somehow," Hugo argued, mostly because he wanted to tease her and see if he could get her to laugh. He knew that he wasn't making any sense when he talked about three edges earlier, but he still did it. When she said she was better at catching snowflakes than he was, Hugo stopped trying. He looked straight at her and cocked his head to the side, trying to decide what he wanted to do. If she hadn't been sick, he would have tackled her into the snow or something like that, but he didn't know if he should do that. He didn't want to make her worse. He ignored her comment about dancing, eyes narrowing when she said she'd caught eleven. "Deal's off," he said in a light voice before striding quickly towards her. He wasn't in the mood to dance on his own, he was going to make her dance with him, if he could. He moved close and tried to grab her hand, so glad that he didn't have to worry about touching her. He pushed off the vision that tried to come and muttered with a smile, "I don't want to dance for you, I want to dance with you." He didn't know what she would think of that, but he didn't think she would say no.

“I don’t know if it’s possible for a snowflake to get chopped in half.” Xan said, biting her lip as she considered it. Snowflakes were so small, so bisecting them – truly bisecting them – would be extremely difficult. You would need a really sharp knife, or a really precise wand, and even then, she was fairly certain that it wouldn’t work out the way Hugo was anticipating. “And depending how you cut it, you could still end up with four points.” She said with a shrug. But Hugo was joking about cutting a snowflake in half, so Xan wasn’t sure why she was thinking so hard about it. Ravenclaw in her, she supposed, though you didn’t need to be a Ravenclaw to think logically. When Hugo found out that he had lost, he said the deal was off, and Xan was preparing to pout and shout that it was no fair. However, Hugo said that he wanted to dance with her, and not for her, and Xan contemplated his suggestion. “Why not both?” She asked after a pause. There was no reason why Hugo couldn’t start dancing on his own and then have her join in after he had paid his penance for losing the snowflake catching competition.

Hugo laughed, sure that Xan was right. Really, he was just trying to make up some reason that three would make sense, but it didn't. He knew that and he knew she did too. So he let it go with that. When she kept going, Hugo shrugged, "Who knows, we'll just have to see how it works when someone does it," he teased, knowing that no one was ever going to really try that. Unless Xan took that as a challenge, which really wasn't his intention at all. He just couldn't help that jibe. He rolled his eyes when Xan asked why he couldn't dance for her and with her. Really? She wasn't just going to dance with him? But he couldn't be truly mad at her. It just wasn't possible. So he started to dance ridiculously. He wanted to see if she would join him sooner if he danced terribly, because he wasn't sure what her reaction would be. He tried dancing like a chicken, doing the macarena and other silly moves he saw people doing when they were playing around. Hopefully this would be enough to appease them.

Xan chuckled when Hugo said that they’d have to see how cutting snowflakes worked when someone actually got around to doing it. Considering that people had to originally view snowflakes under Muggle microscopes, Xan wasn’t sure how that was going to work. But again, logistics weren’t as important as the fun that the two of them had considering the idea. Hugo rolled his eyes at her when she suggested him dancing first, but Xan just smiled back at him. He probably thought she was being ridiculous, but she had won, fair and square! It wasn’t like she was asking him to do anything too weird. Xan burst into laughter when Hugo began dancing totally goofily, and after watching him for half a minute, she joined in, moving her body in ridiculous ways. She might not have been able to use the Room of Requirement, but she was still a gymnast, and it showed in her movements.

Hugo smiled when Xan started laughing at his dancing. That was the whole purpose of it, of course. Really he would do anything to make her smile, but this felt right. Not the dancing- that felt awkward- but spending time with Xan, making her smile felt totally right. Like it was the only thing he wanted to do. It didn't take long before she was dancing with him. Hugo could tell she was trying to make herself look silly, but she didn't look silly to him. She was beautiful and happy and that was what mattered. After a few seconds, he reached out and put his hands on her waist, trying to pull her closer so he could actually dance with her. "How about we dance like this for a bit," he suggested with a smile, swaying slowly to music that didn't really exist. Mostly, he just wanted an excuse to hold her.

Xan was surprised when she felt Hugo’s hand at her waist. She hadn’t realized when he said he wanted them to dance together that he meant dance together. She wasn’t sure how she felt about that. Unlike some of the pureblooded parents, her parents had never thought it was particularly important for Xan to learn how to do simple ballroom dances. The limit of her skills was holding onto someone’s shoulders and swaying back and forth, which she didn’t really mind. Hugo seemed to have the same idea, which made everything infinitely easier. She didn’t want to be stumbling around on the icy ground, that was for sure. There wasn’t any music playing, but Xan hummed along softly to the rhythm of their swaying, inventing a tune to fill what little space there was left between them.

Xan seemed to like dancing with him. At least, she didn't pull away, and Hugo was going to take that as evidence that she wanted to dance with him. He was loving this. It had been ages since the last time when they just let things go and spent time with one another. He just needed to spend more time with her, more time doing ridiculous things to cheer her up. But for now, he wasn't going to worry about that. He'd plan things to make her life more exciting later. Right now he was going to dance outside with his girlfriend until they needed to go back inside. ---the end--- @xanthippe
