Rai had never turned into a bat before. Well, now was as good a time as any to give it a go. She had decided about a month ago that she was going to come back to Hogwarts on December 25th, during the Yule Ball. She would be back on duty at Hogwarts too, then and it would be a fun surprise for all her friends. She had told Finn, of course, because he was her date to this thing but she hadn't told anyone else. She was excited to be there and frankly, she was excited to see Grey. It had been... well, a little over a month since she had seen him. She had written him, a little, but she still didn't tell him what she was planning. It was a good time for her to go back to being on duty at the school and she was ready.
She wore a pastel pink dress, her short hair in loose curls at her shoulders. She was ready to arrive at the ball, and she had the perfect entrance planned. She took in a deep breath and concentrated, but it turned out she didn't have to concentrate that hard, and suddenly, she was a bat!
She laughed, or rather... screeched, and started flying around the room. Oh, this was going to be excellent! She flew toward the Great Hall, swooping through the courtyar- wait, was that Phil and Andy? Phil was back? Since when!? Whatever, she'd bug those two later. She kept flying until she was in the ballroom, high above the dancers and looking around with glee. Oh, this was hilarious. She could get used to this.
Then, she fluttered out into the entrance hall, where the door was open and where most people were meeting their dates. Rai was a little late to the party, in fact... she was almost an hour late. But that didn't matter. She had told Finn she was coming and here she was. She batted her wings right above the stairs and spun around, appearing suddenly as a vampire humanoid again, her pink dress spinning around her until she landed on her feet.
She grinned wildly, her eyes finding Finn not far off. "Fin-" and then she tripped down the stairs.
@finn (we'll invite Grey in later)

Finn was incredibly ecstatic that his best friend was coming back on duty after the Yule Ball, and had even agreed to accompany him to the dance! He knew he’d let her wander off with a certain gentleman later on in the night for sure, but the beginning was about their reunion. She’d told him she was wearing a pale pink dress, so he wore black and white dress robes with a pale pink boutonniere pinned on the left breast pocket. He had bought her a corsage of the same color as well because, why not? Rai deserved to feel like a princess after everything she had been through the past month.
As he waited in the Great Hall, he heard several people start shouting. He looked up and saw a bat flying around the Great Hall. How did that get in there? He was pretty sure there were several students who had a fear of bats, so perhaps he should….oh well then. Rai was at the top of the stairs where the bat had been, spinning back into her human form. What a vision she was. Finn grinned as she called out to him, and then promptly fell down the stairs. He raced forward to check if she was alright, trying to suppress a laugh. Sadly, he failed miserably and he burst out laughing. “Rai darling, perhaps you should consider being a bat full time; as a human it seems to have two left wings,” he joked, eyes streaming from laughing so hard.

Of course he was laughing. Rai would have done the same thing! She looked up at him, a glare in her eyes but her lips pursed in a half smile. "Two left wings," she repeated, "that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Now help me up before I pull you down with me," she said, holding a hand out to him. Really, Rai didn't care who had seen that. She wasn't usually one to be embarrassed, so it was better than it was her who fell rather than someone who really cared.
"How is... everyone?" she asked once she was up, looking down at her dress to make sure it wasn't a mess.

Finn knew Rai wasn’t mad at him for laughing, not really at least. He fully expected her to laugh at him if and when he tripped on his own feet after all. He reached out and yanked Rai to a standing position and waited while she checked to make sure her dress still looked good. “You still look perfect Railynn darling,” he said, kissing his friend on the cheek and offering her the corsage. “It’s like Muggle prom!” he exclaimed excitedly, sliding it onto her wrist.
“Everyone, including a certain Gryffindor seventh year male, is doing well. Him especially since he was cured of a….shall we say rather nasty ailment?” he told her. He hadn’t informed Rai about Grey’s love potioned spell, even though Addilyn had confided in him about it. Instead, he’d let the Potions Club captain and fellow Gryffindor Irina Krum handle it, and it looked like she’d done the job well. He offered his arm out to Rai with a grin. “Shall we go in and make everyone jealous with how fabulous we both look?” he suggested with a chuckle.

He helped her up, not super gracefully, but that was alright. Then, he said that she still looked perfect and kissed her cheek and she blushed, swatting at his arm. Then he produced the corsage and yes, she giggled like a school girl, her hands covering her mouth for a moment. "Oh my gosh, Finn," she lowered her hands and held out her wrist, "this is too perfect. How do you always know just what I need, boo?" she said, giggling again and then kissing his cheek. "But really," she placed a hand on his arm gently, " thank you."
Then he was answering her question, being... wait... what? "A nasty ailment? What happened?" her eyes narrowed, "do I... even want to know?" she asked. He offered his arm and she took it, squeezing it tightly. "Yes. Dancing. Right," she chuckled, turning to raise an eyebrow at him, "we look so damn good I bet even the veelas will cry."

Finn patted Rai’s hand as she thanked him for her corsage. “Because I am a mind-reader Rai, that’s why,” he said, tapping the side of his head with a finger and winking. “And no, you really don’t want to know. Grey can tell you if he’s up for it though,” he added as they walked into the Great Hall. There was no way Finn would be the one to tell Rai that Grey had been under a love-potioned spell for the better part of a month, and if not for the timely action of his baby sister and Irina Krum he still would be. He looked around and saw Grey on the outskirts of the dance floor, then Ondina Weasley, the culprit of said spell. He snickered slightly; Grey had not told Ondina for obvious reasons that he was out of her spell and he couldn’t help but be intrigued as to how that little encounter would unfold. He stood to face Rai and bowed deeply. “May I have this dance?” he asked formally, offering out his hand to her with a grin.

Rai chuckled, "please don't read my mind too much, Finn. You might see some pretty embarrassing stuff," she admitted. Then he said that she really DIDN'T want to know what Grey went through, but that Grey would tell her if he was up for it. Maybe this had something to do with what he was planning to tell her anyway. What he had mentioned in that one letter just a week or so ago. She nodded, ready to move on from that until Grey showed up.
She didn't look around much as they walked in, having already gotten a good view as a bat and not really wanting to catch sight of Grey just yet. She curtsied right back as Finn bowed to her and grinned, taking his hand, "why, yes you may, good sir!" she said before turning on her heel and dragging him deeper onto the dance floor. Then she turned toward him to take the dancing stance as a song started. "What is this? A samba?"

Finn pretended to scowl at Rai’s comment. “I know girl, I’ve seen some pretty weird things in there,” he teased. He stuck his tongue out at her as they began to dance out on the dance floor. When Rai asked if this was a samba, Finn grinned and wiggled his shoulders. “Clearly, I know how to samba,” he told her, taking her by the hands and spinning her around, almost knocking into several people at once. “My bad, sorry!” he called out to them, laughing spilling from his mouth. They twirled around the ballroom until the song ended, and they ended up by the food table. Finn glanced at Rai hopefully. “I know this may not be to your...tastes anymore, but I’m starving,” he said, eyeing the different appetizers laid out on the table hungrily. @railynn

Rai smacked his arm, "stay away from my brains, ya zombie," and she stuck her tongue out right back at him. Soon they were on the dance floor and Finn was dancing with those shoulders, claiming he knew how to samba. She laughed, letting him take her hands and spin her around. She tried to avoid the other people nearby. She laughed, "don't mind us! We have... physical turrets. We just burst into DANCE!" she spun back into Finn dramatically.
They continued to sort of samba around the room. "I still like food!" Rai glared smacking him on the arm again as they eyed the table. "Oh! Look!" she grabbed his shoulder to turn him to face her and brought her eyes really close to his, "my eyes are starting to turn red! It's freaky!"

Finn pulled a straight face as he and Rai took the dance floor by a storm, almost literally. It didn’t last very long though, soon his shoulders weren’t shaking from dance but from laughter. “We are the DANCING FIENDS!” he declared as he dipped her in a dramatic bow, then pulled her up slowly. Grinning, he grabbed her hand and dragged her over to the food table. “Excellent, this looks amazi-” he was interrupted as Rai spun him around and brought her face close to his. Sure enough, Rai’s brown eyes were slowly turning red. “Woah,” he said, fascinated. “So the redder they get does that mean you’re hungrier for human blood?” he asked, putting on a very terrible Romanian accent to impersonate Count Dracula. He stuck his tongue out so the tip touched her nose and laughed. “So I don’t see blood at this table, but look at this sandwich tray! They have everything!” he exclaimed, grabbing both a corned beef sandwich and a roast beef sandwich, piling them on his plate. He took a large bite of roast beef, turning around to talk to Rai. “Oi! There’s Grey over there!” he said, his voice muffled by food. He waved his sandwich in the air towards the Gryffindor, beckoning him to come over.

@railynn & @finn Grey had never imagined the Yule Ball would be this fun. Having been completely cured of his little love potion debacle by Irina, the plans to make the night all about him ended up working out pretty well. Ondina seemed more than ticked off that he had broken free from being her little love-sick puppy dog, and her reaction to it had been priceless. Grey could tell she had done her best to hide her disdain; it was impossible to completely mask it. The best part of the night so far had been knowing the fact that he had beat Ondina at her own game. She might have had an upper hand for a few weeks there though, yet Grey still felt a personal sense of accomplishment over escaping her slithery little clutches.
He had to take that best part of the night back though, because there had been something a little while ago that easily took the cake. Grey had caught it out of the corner of his eye as he talked to Addi following the Ondina episode. Initially he hadn’t thought he had a view of the front entrance, but in fact he did, and the sight of Finn standing out there reminded him that he needed to thank his friend for helping him out with getting cured. The funniest thing happened as Grey kept an eye on Finn though, because at the top of the stairs a person appeared, what seemed to be out of nowhere, and then proceeded to fall down the stairs. Grey tried to keep his composure while talking to Addi, coming to the full realization that the person that had fallen down the stairs was indeed Rai, his suspicions confirmed when Finn walked through the door with her a few moments later. That had definitely topped off the night so far.
Grey didn’t approach his friends immediately, instead opting to continue his little meeting with his sister until she was ready to get back to Edmund. He had yet to see Claire, but assumed she was somewhere around the Great Hall, probably being super serious about her job somewhere in a corner or something. As long as she was transparent about everything that had been going on with her though, that was enough for him.
Eventually his conversation with Addi came to a close and it was time to move on to other things. He still needed to thank Finn for the help and then promptly explain to Rai what had been going on for the past few weeks. He hinted at it in their owls back and forth the past week but wanted to keep it a surprise until he saw her again in person, mostly because he wanted to get it out of the way right after letting Ondina go. Wandering through the crowds with one eye on his friends at all times, Grey waited for the right opportunity to step in. He didn’t want to bombard Rai the second she was back; he was positive this many people in one place was probably making her a little hungry. Such a strange thought to have, but it was going to be a regular one. Unfortunately there was no going back to before.
The time finally came to make his appearance, as Finn seemed to have spotted him through the crowd, waving him over with a sandwich in his hand. That was an all too common sight. Pushing through a few groups to get over to them, Grey was met with little protest, despite literally stepping between people dancing. He really didn’t care at this point, seeing as most people were idly standing around and chatting at this point. “Mr. Jordan, thank you for the help with that thing.” Grey said as he approached, hand outstretched to shake Finn’s. After completing that task, he turned to face Rai. He’d never seen her like this before, dressed up and all. He caught himself staring for a few seconds, unmoving, before finally addressing her. “And good to see you Miss Stughtattle. Absolutely stunning.” Grey grinned at her. “I think this look suits you. One could get used to that.”

Rai laughed right along with Finn, not really noticing that a lot of people were turning her way with slightly dazed looks on their faces. Apparently her laugh was some kind of musical sound. Rai nodded as Finn stared into her eyes and said 'woah'. Then he asked about the hungry part and she cocked her head to the side, "first of all, that accent is offensive," she teased, "second of all, I have no idea. I mean, maybe I could suck your blood and we can see if they get less red?" she raised both eyebrows rapidly, up and down.
"Sandwiches, excellent," she said, turning toward said sandwiches. Then, before she could pick one, Finn was calling Grey over. She froze, still as a statue, she didn't even breathe for a moment. She didn't turn toward the approaching Grey right away.
"Mr. Jordan," Grey started and she finally turned, facing Grey and Finn. Grey had turned toward her right after he shook Finns hand and Rai heard a loud roaring in her hears. Like she was standing by the ocean or in the middle of a thunderstorm. She felt like he stood there forever not saying anything, just staring. Finally, words came out of his mouth and the roaring stopped to make way for them. "Thank you," she said with a nod, horribly aware of her red/brown eyes and how pale her skin looked with this pale pink dress. She found herself grinning back, though, in spite of feeling slightly self conscious. "Well, don't," she encouraged, "I promise me getting dressed up like this will not be a common occurrence. So, you'll be pleasantly surprised every time, I imagine." She chuckled, biting the corner of her lip for a moment and looking over at Finn, then looking back to Grey. "You look great. Like a trouble maker as usual, but great," then she took a step toward him and raised an eyebrow, "so what happened to you?"

Finn didn’t watch Grey as the Gryffindor made his way over to them; instead his attention was on Rai. He was alert for any sort of tensing coming from his best friend. She was still, after all, a new vampire, and he’d be there in case she felt like she was losing control in any way. He was pretty sure she was preoccupied though by what exactly to say to Grey before he came to stand in front of them. Really though, she should be more worried about Grey being tongue-tied than herself; she was giving off this sort of...aura that reminded him a bit of Dominique with her quarter veela blood. He had to look up whether or not that was something vampires had as well, later of course. “Mr Slater,” he greeted, unable to stop a smile from cracking on his face. He watched Rai and Grey back and forth, his smile slowly turning into a smirk. As he heard Rai ask Grey what had happened to him, he knew that was his cue to exit and give these two some alone time. “Well my darling Rai, if you two don’t mind, I must be off to fulfill a promise to a certain strawberry blonde Weasley girl,” he said, bowing to them both before beelining to Dominique. When they had broken it off months ago, Dom had made him promise to save her at least one or two dances for the Yule Ball. Finn had readily agreed; they were still good friends who enjoyed each others company in a platonic way after all! @railynn next >) grey xavier slaterFINN OUT for a few turns @dominique here is the shoutout we discussed <3

@railynn & @finn He couldn’t recall her eyes being this red; maybe it had something to do with the night. When he had gone with Finn to visit her in the hospital it hadn’t exactly been late in the day yet. Then again, he had been more worried about other things, like her actually being alive. There were lots of things he still didn’t know about vampires. He was learning though. They were intriguing to say the least, and now he had Rai right by his side to show him everything they could do. It was hard not to be excited about that a little, even with the circumstances that had put Rai in this position in the first place. “That’s no fun. But I guess chasing down bad guys in a dress and heels isn’t really your style is it.” Knowing Rai though, formal wear wouldn’t exactly hold her back from anything. That would probably make it more fun for her. “Thanks. I had to step my game up tonight after all.” In regards to trying to look as serious about the ball as possible so as to throw any suspicions Ondina might have out the window.
Grey was about to start in about his little love potion escapade but Finn excused himself. That might have been for the better after all; he knew the details anyways. Grey was positive Finn wouldn’t be able to contain his laughter throughout the story either, so it was turning into a win-win on all fronts. “Good luck.” He waved to Finn as he left their little circle. Now it was just him and Rai. That hadn’t happened since she was turned, although this was also only the second time he had seen her.
“What happened to me?” Grey repeated the question. He wanted to play around with the story for a little bit. It was a great one after all. Clearing his throat, he continued. “Well, I fell in love.” He paused again, holding for a few seconds to let it all sink in. A small grin formed on his face and he had to keep talking to avoid laughing uncontrollably. “Quite the nasty little affair too. You remember Ondina Weasley? She was my date tonight. She had also been slipping me a love potion for the past month. Luckily Addi noticed I was head over heels for her, which is extremely disgusting the more I think about it, alerted Finn, and they got Irina Krum to fix me up with an antidote.” Grey continued his grin, watching to see Rai’s reactions to all of it. “That was at the start of the month, so I’ve had to keep up the charade that I was so desperately in love with Ondina until tonight, when I finally broke her tiny, icy heart. At least I hope I put a chip in it.”

Rai raised an eyebrow at Grey, "is that a challenge, Grey Slater? Because I'm sure I could still kick you up and down these halls dressed like this," her eyes narrowed, "and not even bat an eye." She smirked. Then he said that he had to step up his game tonight and her joking face vanished. What did he mean by that? She didn't ask just yet, considering he already had something to tell her.
But then, Finn was leaving her, and she looked to him with wide pleading eyes before he was walking away. She took a deep breath before turning back to Grey, trying to remain calm. He was ready to answer the question then, and she waited patiently for it to star- what?. Him saying he fell in loved caused her heart to stop beating, if it even was before. Something caught in her throat and she almost took a step back. But, then, he grinned. She was confused now. But as he went on, she started to smile too, a laugh bubbling up in her throat. Once he was finished explaining, that laugh escaped and she full on pointed at him while laughing, "that's so embarrassing for you!" she laughed even more, her free hand clutching her stomach. It took a while for her to calm down, then she placed a hand on his shoulder and took a step closer. "Let's make that chip a bit bigger," she suggested, sliding her hand down his arm to take his hand as she stepped around him, backing up and pulling him toward the dance floor.
