@railynn & @finn “Challenge? Merlin, no. I know you too well to tempt that.” He shrugged his shoulders. There had definitely been more than one occasion where she had already done something similar to that to him. Mostly contained to the common room, but sometimes it escaped into the corridors if things were getting out of hand. Now they had to be all “professional” with each other. Clearly didn’t stop Rai from sticking him in that weird goo spell a few months back.
The reactions she gave off while he told his story weren’t exactly what he had expected, at least not until the one at the end. He had figured Rai was going to laugh at him like that. It was inevitable. Even Irina had let a laugh or two escape at his expense after she had cured him. The whole ordeal was comical. What kind of idiot went and got themselves love potioned for that long? Apparently only Grey Slater. Everything that came before the laughing fit was…different to say the least. Surely him falling in love, falsified or not, wasn’t that great of a shock to her. It was going to happen someday. The confusion was understandable though, as Addi had almost the exact same look on her face when he broke the news to her about Ondina a few weeks earlier as well.
“Yes, yes I know. Believe me, not the best thing to be pulled out of either. Emotions are scary as hell Rai, and to think they’re that easy to manipulate…” Grey trailed off, looking down at the floor in the process. It was funny to look back on it now, but the moment he had been pulled out of his lovey dovey stupor was easily one of the worst experiences in his life. Going from absolutely adoring everything about Ondina Weasley to feeling nothing for her whatsoever was insane. He didn’t wish that kind of torture on anyone.
He felt a hand on his shoulder, and he looked up to see Rai stepping closer to him. Her other hand clasped onto his hand as she started to pull him in the direction of the dance floor. “You’re going to make poor Finn jealous as well. I think he was looking forward to dancing with me, and here you’ve gone and stolen me for yourself.” He grinned as he let her lead him towards the floor. Speaking of Finn, Grey had already lost sight of him. Knowing his friend, he was probably standing in a corner of the Great Hall watching all of this go down, laughing to himself. “I’m lucky tonight. Started with the devil and ended up with a vampire. Wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Rai chuckled as he mentioned how he knew her too well to actually challenge her. Of course he did. Then, after his story was over, he spoke as to how it wasn't the best thing to be pulled out of either, and that emotions were scary. That they were easy too manipulate. She didn't say her immediate thought at first, figuring she'd wait until they were on the dance floor to get into it.
He followed her lead, letting her take him to the ground as a slow song began to start. She chuckled at his mention of Finn, making a mental note to make Finn ask Grey to dance later. She tried to not lead so much as they assumed position, figuring she may as well let the kid take control as was tradition. But Rai was never very traditional. "Finn will get over it," she finally mused. Then he spoke of getting lucky, ending up with her rather than the devil, and not wanting it any other way. She grinned, bearing her teeth for a quick moment and hissing at him. Then she laughed, "there's even more vampire where that came from. Look, my eyes are turning red," she said, moving in a little closer to him so he could look into her eyes better. She didn't realize that movement made her heart speed up or realize that she suddenly wasn't so self conscious anymore. This was Grey. Her best friend.
"And about that manipulating emotions thing...." she started as they moved to the music. "I think it's easier to manipulate the emotions of those who aren't really attached to anything. You need something to tether you to reality. To fight for," she said slowly.

@railynn & @finn They were on the dance floor in mere seconds, apparently doing a slow song right off the bat. He wasn’t opposed to slower ones. Not being the best dancer in the world, they definitely helped him refine the steps and get into the swing of things. He had managed a couple faster songs earlier in the night, but they had left him slightly nauseated for a few minutes. This speed was perfect though. Grey let out a laugh as she stated that Finn would get over it. “Maybe. He was rather quick to run off though. Is he that invested in Dominique or is he just scared of me?” Grey couldn’t recall ever hearing anything more about Finn’s little fling with the Weasley girl, if it could be called that in the first place. The way he had scampered off seemed to say otherwise though, so Grey didn’t think it was too much to inquire about it. That is, if Rai even knew in the first place.
She seemed to let him lead throughout their conversation, and he did his best to keep it steady with the music. Unlike his younger sister, Grey had almost zero musical sense in his body. Stepping in beat was difficult enough as it was, but luckily the slow songs continued. The quick flash of her teeth made him raise his eyebrows slightly. He hadn’t expected that kind of reaction. Rai leaned in closer as she mentioned her eyes getting redder. They could become even redder than they already were? “What does that mean? Are you hungry? We could always stop if you want to grab a bite to-” Grey stopped talking. That last part was a little untasteful in his opinion. For a moment there he had forgotten that her main food group was human blood now. The liquid life force of every living being in this very room. “You know, only if you want to.” He muttered out as he tried not to make eye contact for a few seconds. That was too awkward of a follow-up.
They continued dancing though, the music and other groups still flowing around them. Grey listened intently to her thoughts on emotions, and how it was easier to go after those that weren’t attached to anything. It made sense. Had he not mended things with his sisters and Ondina had gone after him with this love potion, he might have been royally screwed. But that hadn’t happened, and he had his siblings and few friends to back him up. Things lined up perfectly to prevent Ondina from getting what she wanted. He’d say he didn’t believe in fate like that, but it was hard to ignore when things started making sense in this manner. “Like what?” He asked, in regards to having something to fight for. Grey had planned on getting a dog after graduating. It would definitely love him unconditionally, and all he had to do was feed it and scratch its belly. Far easier than any other kind of attachment.

Rai laughed, tossing her head back just for a moment before looking at him again. "I think he's scared of his feelings for you, yup. That's it," she confirmed, another shorter laugh escaping her lips. She didn't want to go into Finn and Dom right now, really, so she didn't eleborate. But, really, Finn was okay with the break up happening now. They were good friends and being single was good for him, he had a hard time settling down sometimes. Though, when he did, he became obsessive.
At first, Rai almost felt angry at Grey's question when it came to her red eyes. But, that feeling didn't last. She smiled, raising an eyebrow ever so slowly at him. She moved her hand gently from his shoulder to touch the side of his neck with her fingertips. "Why, are you offering?" she said in a low voice. She was just teasing, but then she realized that she could actually get him to do it if she really, really wanted to. She immediately stopped, cleared her throat and looked away for a moment at the crowd around them. "I'm good," she muttered, just as awkward as he was.
Then, he asked 'like what' in reference to her comment about finding something to fight for. She fought the urge to feel a little hurt by that, sa a friend and all, obviously. She shrugged, "like family," she said plainly. "Or, you know, when you eventually do fall in love. Other than with Finn I mean."

@railynn & @finn “It’s starting to all make sense the more I think about it.” Grey stated jokingly. It probably wasn’t too nice of them to poke fun at Finn without him there. Not that he would really care in the first place. He had no problems finding dates from what Grey could tell. Rai never answered his question about Dominique, so he took that to mean things between the Weasley girl and Finn probably weren’t how he had interpreted it. Funny how things like that could just start or end at any moment. Grey had been rather close to having that happen to him only a few weeks earlier too. Thankfully there were others around him that had their wits about them.
He knew something strange was going to come out of the question about her being hungry, but he thought it was going to be a statement that was contradictory to a normal Rai one. Grey was pleasantly surprised to see that his rather rude comment hadn’t had the effect that he was worrying about. Quite the contrary actually. She had lifted her hand off of his shoulder and brushed it along his neck. A shiver reverberated throughout his entire body as she did so. There was something deeply unsettling about the way she had looked at him while doing that. Grey knew she was messing with him, but the fact that her taking a nice little chomp out of his neck was possible reminded him that joking around now could produce strange results. Still, he had the gall to continue the banter. Getting the last word in was what his whole relationship with Rai was built on. It wouldn’t be like him to let her get off there, especially after not getting mad at him.
“Sure. Last I checked there wasn’t blood at the refreshments table, so that leaves only me. Plus, I’m a strong, young lad. A bite here or there wouldn’t hurt.” Or would it? Only way was to find out. “Well, I’m your personal blood bag for the night if you need to.” Grey followed up with after Rai stated she was fine. The way she looked away from him for a second said otherwise, but he left the offer up in the air in case she needed to take it. Better to vamp out on him than a heartbroken Ravenclaw or something. They seemed to be good targets for all kinds of nasty business these days.
Grey wasn’t sure how Rai would respond to his question. The way he had put it left it wide open to any number of answers, because honestly, he wasn’t really sure what he could be attached to. Family and friends made sense, so he nodded along to that. “Finn would be a fling and that’s it. Our fans will have to be severely disappointed unfortunately.” He laughed. That would be a strange sight indeed. Grey grimaced at the idea of eventually falling in love. There had been enough of that lately. It was a strange feeling though. As far as he could recall, he had never really had something like that before. Maybe for coffee or Quidditch, but that was it. At least he knew how to figure it out the next time it happened. “What about you? What keeps you tethered? You’ll be around a lot longer than the rest of us, so there has to be something.” Quite the morbid comment to make, but it wasn’t like he was wrong about it. Rai would end up outliving almost everyone in the Great Hall. A few outliers would probably make it past her, but those were freak occurrences. It had to be a depressing realization to come to.

Rai giggled again as he spoke of Finn. "Don't worry. I'll give him a chance to dance with you. He's my date, but I'll share," she said in a faux sweet tone, reaching out to pat his shoulder lightly. Good times, good times.
She did notice that shiver rush through him as she touched his neck, which was part of the reason that she stopped. Still, even then, he still pressed on with the teasing. She almost froze again as he got to the part about the fact that he was a 'strong, young lad' and that 'a bite here or there wouldn't hurt'. Well, I’m your personal blood bag for the night if you need to. He added. She had a few choices to make here. Continue with the joke, cut it off early, or run away. Though... she wasn't sure if he was joking about that last part. She made the obvious choice, of course. "Well," she said, giving a short shrug, "I'm not allowed to feed on students," she explained slowly, "rain check for a few months?" she raised a eyebrow at him, trying desperately to not be completely irresistible while doing so. It was weird to have to concentrate on that...
They were back on the joke of Finn, thanks to her, and his comment about it being a fling made her laugh. She cut the laugh short, though, not sure if the sound was too... ugh, seriously, this whole magical allure thing was hard to deal with. "I know I would be," she joked, when he said the fans would be disappointed,
Then it came. She wasn't expecting him to ask it, actually, but she also wasn't surprised when she did. She had set herself up for this. You, was the real answer. In that last second, right before she was supposed to decide whether to live or die, his was the first face that came to her mind. She was terrified by that, especially since seeing him right now. She didn't notice that she was silent for a while, and also didn't notice that she had averted her eyes from his.

@railynn & @finn “I appreciate the gesture. My date has already found her back-up it seems.” Not that he cared about Ondina anymore. A month ago that response would have been completely different. A sickening one actually. “Or maybe I was the back-up. Don’t know, don’t care.” Grey shrugged. There was no use worrying about that anymore. He had been released of her slimy grasp. She was quite the actress too. If the magical world didn’t pan out on her end, she could always go into the muggle one and find plenty of work. Then he could submit articles to muggle tabloids exposing how fake she actually was. That would be the ultimate revenge.
Grey frowned when she said she couldn’t feed on students. Clearly that made things difficult while on the job right? There had to be a fridge somewhere stashed with blood bags if students were off limits. Unless vampires had other supplements that keep him over. He’d have to ask about that, since it seemed like there should be something else that was just as substantial for them other than blood. “Guess so. I’ll make sure it’s nice and clean by then too. Won’t be any of that pureblood stuff though.” He let out a laugh as Rai said she would be disappointed about him and Finn not being a ‘thing’. “Sorry. It was never going to work out from the start. Too many other obstacles in the way.” He laughed again, smiling at her.
When he asked her what was going to keep her tethered, he wasn’t sure what the response was going to be. Clearly whatever it had been pre-vampirism had changed, or could have, from what it was now. There were too many other factors in play now. Things that never would have affected her in her normal human lifestyle. Living longer and having a strict diet of human blood changed all of that though. Things seemed like they had to be much more serious and done carefully. Rai looked away from him though when he finished talking. Maybe that was something she was struggling with right now. “It’s okay if you don’t know. I mean, I didn’t. I guess that was more of a hypothetical than anything.” He paused, still watching to see if she would look back at him. “We’ll figure it out eventually. Got a lot of time ahead of us, right?”

Grey mentioned that his date had moved on, unsurprisingly. The he said maybe e was the back up, but that he didn't know or care. She chuckled, "well, I for one am glad you're not with a date," she said firmly, before realizing that probably sounded rude, "I just mean because Finn and I need you for OUR back up. So it's better if you're not taken. Just stay with us," she said, her smile full of mirth.
He frowned when she said she couldn't feed on students though that seemed obvious to her. He agreed to the rain-check, though, saying that his blood would be nice and clean but without that pureblood. He laughed, and she laughed. "Well, I expect you to take good care of yourself the next few months so when the time comes you taste as delicious as you smell," once again, running off with her mouth before speaking. Except this time she didn't catch it.
He joked about the obstacles in the way of him and Finn and she laughed, too. The running joke was all well and good until it really happened. Unless it really happened. Not until!
He spoke, after some moments of silence, saying that it was okay if she didn't know what kept her tethered. "No I know," she said quickly, after he had said that they had a lot of time ahead, that they could figure it out. She let her eyes find his again and she nodded, "some of us have more time then others. That's the part I'm worried about," she paused, "why did I keep myself tethered to someone - people who will just be gone before I am?"

@railynn & @finn It was funny to watch Rai backpedal after she said she was happy he didn’t have a date anymore. Almost impossible not to laugh, so he let out a small chuckle instead. “Well I’m glad too. Any longer with the ice queen and I’d become one of those snowmen decorations.” He nodded as she added that he could stay with her and Finn. “Hadn’t really planned on going anywhere else anyways. It was either this or working on the article for the paper, and I do not want to deal with that one.” That and the younger club members had to step up once in a while and do their civic duty. Grey had bent over backwards for that paper and they needed to realize that and follow in his footsteps. There were enough of them now that they could keep it going strong for a few more years before his influence was wiped off the face of Hogwarts history. Plus he had way more at stake tonight than any of them did. It wasn’t every day that one got to bring a Weasley to a formal ball and then subsequently ditch her. Actually, he was probably the only one to do that. Hopefully that wouldn’t incur the wrath of the entire clan at some point. He’d hate to have a run in with Ondina’s father. Apparently he dealt with dragons. Anyone that did that had to be one scary person.
He smelled delicious? That was quite the opposite from what she had said in the hospital. Grey knew that was a joke, and that was also because she was still getting used to the whole smelling blood thing, but he grinned nonetheless this time around. “Oh? Suddenly I’m delicious? You make it sound like biting me is some kind of delicacy.” Maybe it was. He had gotten the impression that she was mostly feeding off blood bags provided by Mungo’s. While it was still blood, surely the real deal from a living, breathing human was actually a treat. Now that he thought about it, had she actually fed on a person yet? That was too personal though, so he didn’t feel like bringing it up right now. It could wait anyways. There was a lot of time ahead for them.
Speaking of time, it seemed that had something to do with the whole ‘tether’ talk they were having. It made sense that she hadn’t figured it out yet. All those years ahead would yield something eventually. Grey counted himself one of the lucky ones to have kind of figured it out already. Surely not many seventh years could say what kept them going. A select few at most. He felt like he had figured that out a long time ago though, and had decided not to listen to it. “Obviously that person, or people, matter to you. Right? Doesn’t sound like it needs to be anything more than that. And it’s not like it’ll be that much longer. What, forty or fifty years maybe? Us normies can get up there in years.” He grinned at her. “I’d worry about that when it gets to that point. That’s a long way off anyways.”

She laughed as he called Ondina Weasley the ice queen. He went on to say that he could be working on an article instead, but that he hadn't really planned on it and didn't want to. "I think you'd make a lovely snowman décor. I would take you home and put you in a glass case," she chuckled, "right next to where I keep your heart. Still have it, you know," she reminded, joking about their little exchange within their letters the last week. She was glad that they had bonded over letters again before she came back. It was easier to get back into that place where they could tease and joke with each other. It made seeing him a lot better of a transition from just not speaking for a month.
Her nose wrinkled at his next comment. "Well, I guess it would be a delicacy... since, as you now, I don't actually feed on people right out of them," she shook her head and chuckled again. She paused, biting her lip for a moment in thought before speaking again, "and you never weren't delicious smelling. I just had to convince myself you weren't back then so... you know..." she tired to laugh out the serious tone she'd taken, but it came out as more of a coughing sound. "I just mean that it wasn't easy to control back then. So being close to you was hard. Not so hard now," at least not in the vampire sense. Now it was hard in the sense that her instincts wanted her to just get closer.
He responded to her question by say that that person, or people, mattered to her. That it didn't need to be more than that. That the difference wasn't much. He told her not to worry and she nodded, chewing on the corner of her lip a little as she listened. He grinned, too, and that made it easier for her to smile back. "You're right. Plus, maybe that someone wouldn't mind being a vampire too," she meant it as a joke, but it didn't come out as lighthearted as she wanted.
The song ended and she slowed to a stop. "Another? Or... refreshment? For you, not me," she teased, her playful tone coming back again. Finally.

@railynn & @finn Still had his heart? It took a second to realize she meant the conversation they had in their letters. That’s right! “What kind of torture is that? Placing a poor snowman so close to his heart yet separated by glass? Maybe I should be more careful around you now that you’re a vampire. All this talk about drinking my blood makes it sound like I’m your personal snack bar.” He squinted his eyes slightly at her, letting the joke sink in a little. “You can keep it. The heart, I mean. I might be better off without it.” Definitely didn’t need something that was going to compromise his final few months of school, especially if he had a target painted on his back by Ondina. If she wanted to play, he’d make sure to reciprocate.
So he would be a delicacy after all. That made sense, especially as she added the part about not feeding on people. Did they have places where they could do that? Like, actually feed on people? There was no way it was the same as getting blood from other sources. He supposed the real question to ask was whether or not a vampire could prevent themselves from going too far when chomping on a live being. If they were so ingrained with eating from blood bags, a person being a delicacy could drive them crazy. He hadn’t thought of it that way, and felt bad that he was standing here teasing Rai about drinking his blood. Grey nodded his head that he understood her not being able to control herself then. “Same with Finn then too? I’m sure you got used to him hanging around though, so that was a little easier.” The sheer level of willpower it had to take to not jump someone and drink from them must have been insane, especially when Rai never wanted to be that way in the first place. It was admirable. He was positive that he’d have messed up somewhere along the way.
“Maybe they would.” He answered, without really thinking about what the statement was that he responded to. “Whoever gets to hang around with you for the next two hundred years is pretty damn lucky.” The song was coming to an end though, and Grey looked around to see that there were still quite a few people in the Great Hall. Everything kind of disappeared when dancing, especially when all the focus was on the conversation he was having with Rai. “Well, it doesn’t look like Finn is back from his redheaded adventure, so I might be stuck with you for the rest of the night. Unless, you know, you have work stuff that I’m keeping you from.”

Railynn laughed again as he spoke about being placed next to his heart and the snack bar issue. Then, he said she could keep the heart and that he may be better off without it. "But there is an issue there... a snack bar is no good without a heart to pump the blood through it. So I have to decide what I want more... your heart or the snack bar..." she smirked devilishly. It was all good fun, until the truth came out.
Rai shrugged at the mention of Finn, "yeah, true. He's alright. It's easier to ignore since he was... the only one i would see for a while," she admitted. Finn had made it easy.
'Maybe they would,' he said. She felt like all of her blood rushed into her ears and she shook her head in time for him to say that whoever gets to hang around wit her was pretty damn lucky. She simply nodded her head. "Yeah," she muttered. Then, he claimed he might be stuck with her and she chuckled softly, "You can be stuck with me for as long as you want. And that work stuff, eh, you're more entertaining," her eyes flickered to a figure moving towards them in the crowd, and she took a step back from Grey, "but looks like he's back."

Finn had enjoyed his evening; even though he and Dom had decided to be just friends, it was always good to spend time with her. He’d ran into Casey and Jessie too; the latter of which he was incredibly happy to see. But as the night wound down, he made his way back to his real date and the date she probably should have had to begin with. “Lost track of time, sorry Grey I owe you a dance,” he said jokingly. He grinned at the two of them. “I hope you two behaved yourselves while I was away. Sadly Rai you and I should be getting back, we stupidly agreed to early morning rounds tomorrow. Though I doubt anyone will be awake that early,” he reminded his friend, groaning slightly. He offered his arm to his fanged friend, and bid Grey goodnight as they left the ballroom.
