Dustin was glad that Viovinnia was shocked by the noise on the roof, too, because he had almost let out an undignified squeak at the sound, and if she had been calm about it, he would have felt like a bit of a sissy. Having an excuse to hold onto her was nice, though, so Dustin wasn’t as scared by the sound as he probably would have been if he was alone. He pulled Vi closer to his chest, resting his chin on her head while he relished in the sensation of having her close to him. It was nice to feel like he was somebody’s safe place. “I vote we take advanced anti-bear measures.” Dustin stage whispered to Vinnie. It was difficult with her in his arms, but Dustin stepped off of the mattress and onto the floor, and then promptly threw them both into bed. He untangled one of his arms from around her to throw the blankets and quilts over their heads, effectively shutting out any lights and adding a small barrier to the noise. “We’re safe now.” He told her, voice a murmur rather than a whisper. “But I heard that you’re even safer from bears if you’re kissing someone else.” Dustin added, voice still pitched low. “So maybe we should try that too.”

Vi had not been expecting the warm, safe feeling she got when Dustin pulled her closer to him and rested his chin on her head. She held onto him, taking in his smell and just leaning her head onto his chest. When he spoke, she look up at him and made no effort to hide the half smile she now wore. She had no time to protest to the extreme anti-bear measures before Dustin stepped off the mattress, still holding onto her. She didn't make an effort to get out of his grasp, either.
Viovinnia felt somewhat like a doll as Dustin threw both Vi and himself down onto the bed, then pulling all of the blankets up and over their heads so that they were emerged in absolute darkness. This caused Viovinnia to smile so widely, she was glad it was dark under the blankets. "Well then," Vi said as she wiggled herself under the blankets to cuddle up closer to Dustin. "We better be extra safe." Somehow, in the dark, her lips found his.

Dustin felt like he was in a cocoon when he was underneath all of the covers on the bed. It was arm, and it was dark, and Viovinnia was beside him, and he couldn’t think of anything that would make that moment better, except for kissing. When Vi kissed him, Dustin decided that this was going to be the moment he remembered for the rest of his life. Even if he forgot everything else about Vi in some tragic incident, he would remember this moment. He would remember the warmth and the safety and the absolute, perfect happiness of being in the arms of the person he loved. Dustin smiled before cradling Vinnie’s face in his hands, kissing her again. That night, they stayed very safe from any bears, whether they were real or not.
