A few days ago, Dustin showed up at her apartment in the middle of the night to take Ev skating and she'd loved the experience! It was something she'd never done before and now she intended to return the favor, hoping that if he had been to a theater, he wouldn't have seen the movie she wanted to show him. In a way, at least. She was going to try and pull Dustin away from all the preparations of Christmas and get him to come see a movie with her. She'd heard of a muggle movie theater that was playing old classics and one of her favorites was today: "It's A Wonderful Life". Ev hoped Dustin wouldn't make much of a fit, since he was the one who said he didn't have time to do things during the day. It was late evening, around nine and Ev was determined to make him go with her. She'd be more upfront about it than he was though. She had no intention of throwing rocks at his window. She knocked on his parents door, hoping that he'd be the one to answer. If he wasn't, it probably wouldn't be too hard for her to find out where he was. His parents liked her, after all.

Dustin was bored. He had told Evelyn that he didn’t have much time during the day, but now that he had finished with the majority of his Christmas-related activities, there wasn’t anything left for him to do. He had considered writing a letter to Vi, but he didn’t want to be that super clingy boyfriend. When a knock sounded on his door, Dustin perked up. He didn’t know who it could be, but even if it was just a salesperson, he’d be happy to have some sort of social interaction. When he opened the door, though, it wasn’t a salesperson – it was Evelyn! Dustin threw his arms around her unceremoniously, squeezing Ev tight to him. “You’ve come to save me from boredom!” He declared, hoping that Evelyn had some sort of plan for them that night, instead of just coming to say hi or something like that.

Ev grinned and started to laugh when Dustin wrapped her in a tight hug. She hugged him back as best she could- he didn't really give her the chance to move her arms before he hugged her. "Of course I did!" She told him once he let her go a little bit. "I didn't know you were bored though, or I would have come sooner. You told me you were busy during the day!" She accused, still smiling at him. "I do have a surprise for you though ... if you're up for it. It's not as exciting as ice skating but ... I want to do it." She shrugged, not really sure if he would want to go with her or not. Still, she was inviting him and if he didn't want to come she would go on her own.

“I was busy before.” Dustin said, melodramatically when Ev protested that she would have come earlier if she had known of his boredom. When she said that she had a surprise for him, Dustin perked up. He liked surprises, especially since he was more often the giver of said surprises than the recipient. “Anything is more exciting than being around my parents all day.” Dustin said firmly. He loved his family, he really did, but wow could they nag him! It was like he was still a kid and not a fully functioning adult who only stayed at home out of a desire to spend more time with his sisters when they were home from school. “So what’s the surprise?” He asked, half expecting Evelyn just to grab onto him and Apparate them away the same way he had done when they had gone ice skating.

Ev rolled her eyes when he said he was busy before. "Well if you would've told me you weren't busy anymore we could've done lots of fun things, you know," she told him factually. It wasn't like she had a lot to do lately. Rocco was busy, so she was bored more often than not. She grinned, teasing him, "I like your parents. And can't you leave here if you're so bored. No one is making you stay." Not that she wanted him to leave. If he'd left it would have made finding him all the more difficult. She shook her head when he asked her what the surprise was. "Oh no you don't! You wouldn't tell me what your surprise was, so now it's my turn. Come on!" She encouraged, holding her hand out for him to take. She'd give him a second to choose to follow him, or she'd grab him and bring him along like he did with her the other night.

“I didn’t want to bother you!” Dustin protested, which was actually a weak excuse considering he had never shown any apprehension at bugging Evelyn before. That was best friends were supposed to do to each other, right!? “I like my parents, too, but they’re still parents!” Dustin said when Ev said that she liked his parents. He didn’t answer her question about leaving on his own. He could, but then his parents would ask questions and he’d have to explain that he was going out alone, and they would judge him, as parents were want to do. “Alright, I’m coming!” Dustin said, taking Evelyn’s hand, eager to see where she would lead them.

Really? That was going to be his excuse. "Since when have you ever cared about bothering me?" She demanded, thinking only a second longer before adding, "And when have I ever been upset about you "bothering" me?" She lifted her fingers in the air to make quotations around the word bothering. Dustin was never a bother to her. Out of the few people that Ev knew, Dustin was the one who took the time to get to know her in return, the one who worked to bring her out of her shell. She trusted him more than anyone else. "Of course they're parents, that's their job. You don't have to stop living your life for them," Ev argued, hoping that his parents weren't listening. If they were, they might not like her as much the next time she saw them. The truth was, Ev understood what Dustin was saying. In fact, that was one of the reasons why she moved out. She grinned when he said he was coming. "Good," she said before apparating to the theater in question. "Have you ever seen "It's A Wonderful Life?" She asked curiously as she led him up to the ticket stand and showed the workers the tickets she bought previously. She smiled at them and linked her arm through Dustin's, walking with him into the appropriate theater. She was getting excited now. She loved this movie!

Dustin shrugged when Evelyn saw through his obviously flimsy excuse, not wanting them to get into a snark battle about his bothering her, or lack thereof. He also elected to ignore her comment about his parents. It was different than she seemed to be seeing it – it wasn’t like he was stopping living life because his parents were around. He stopped living life because he was a lazy asshole sometimes. Evelyn pulled him in front of a theatre, and Dustin’s eyes widened. He had been to the movies before, when he was a little kid, but he had stopped coming as often after he had started school at Hogwarts. “I’ve never seen it, no.” Dustin assumed it was a Christmas movie, though. Peering over at the time that it said on their ticket stubs, Dustin pinched Evelyn’s arm. “Cutting it a little close, there, Ev!” he said. The movie started in two minutes, and they hadn’t even found their seats yet! Luckily, everyone else seemed to have other plans, and the theatre was relatively empty. Dustin plopped down in a prime seat right as the film started rolling, and he turned to Ev. “So what’s this movie about?” He didn’t mind the ending getting spoiled as long as he knew what to expect.

Dustin was oddly silent, but Evelyn decided to enjoy the quiet instead of call him out on it. He probably just didn't want to argue with her or something, which was fine. Once they got to the theater they weren't going to have time to fight. He seemed to be in awe when they reached the theater and Ev giggled as she pulled him inside. She shrugged when he teased her, saying they were cutting it a little close. "Well it was really a last minute decision. I couldn't figure out if you'd want to come with me or if you'd be too busy," she told him honestly. She'd found out the movie was playing here about thirty minutes ago and couldn't decide what to do about it. Luckily, Dustin wasn't too busy. She sat down next to him and grinned when he asked what the movie was about. "A guy." She almost left it at that to be annoying, but decided to explain just a little bit more. "It's basically the story of his life, and at the end it shows you what life would have been like for the people he knew if he'd never been born," she turned her attention to the screen before freezing. She turned back to Dustin. "And you are not allowed to make fun of me when I cry at the end of it because I cannot help myself. Got it?" He'd probably do it anyway, but at least now he'd know it was something she expected to happen. She got comfortable in her seat and looked up at the screen, excited.

Dustin shrugged, accepting that Evelyn’s decision to take him to the movies had been a last minute one. Normally he was the one who made the impulsive decisions, so it was kind of nice to take a break from that and let Evelyn be impulsive instead. When he got the plot of the movie out of Evelyn, Dustin raised his eyebrows. That sounded interesting, but he had no idea how it would make anyone cry. “Well, I already know that everyone else’s life would be absolute awful if I wasn’t born.” Dustin said teasingly. “We should have gotten popcorn!” Dustin exclaimed suddenly. He glanced around. He wouldn’t be bothering anyone if he just slipped out really quick, right? He had even taken some money from his dad when he had gone grocery shopping the other day, so he had Muggle money to pay with. “Be right back.” Dustin said quietly, ducking out of the theatre before Ev could tell him otherwise. And who really cared if he missed the beginning of the movie? Evelyn could explain it to him while they are their overpriced, fake-butter-slathered popcorn. Mmm. Fake butter. After purchasing his large popcorn, Dustin returned to his seat, shoving the bucket at Evelyn. “What’s happening?” He whispered, not even bothering to look at the screen first.

Ev rolled her eyes when Dustin mentioned how everyone else would be miserable without him. "Yes, of course," she responded sarcastically, unable to help herself. Then she raised her eyebrows and turned to look at him, "While you're one of the only people that would have been impacted without me." She shrugged slightly, not upset at all, just stating the facts as she saw them. "But I don't think that would have hurt you too much." Honestly, Ev knew that she hadn't impacted most of the people she could have. She didn't reach out to others, didn't talk to them. Dustin was one of the few that she actually interacted with, one of the few people she trusted. Then he started talking about popcorn and was gone before Ev could say a thing. Shaking her head, she turned back to the movie. He came back, asking what was happening. Ev reached into the bucket of popcorn before answering him. "Thanks," she said with a smile. "It's showing a quick run-through of his life so far. He just saved his brother from dying in frozen water. He got sick but now he's back to work." She watched the show with interest, even though she saw it every year with her parents.

Dustin rolled his eyes, and shoved at Ev’s shoulder. “Isn’t the whole point of this movie that people change the world in small ways or something?” He asked with an arched eyebrow. He couldn’t imagine that the guy they’d follow for this sort of feel-good movie would be a superhero who the world would be obviously different without. It was just an average guy, right? And besides, even one person’s life had to be worth something, so even the smallest impact was still huge. “And you’re my best friend, Ev. Not having you would hurt me.” Who else would volunteer to be his best friend? And even if someone did, they wouldn’t be Evelyn.
Evelyn caught him up on the part of the movie that he had missed while getting the popcorn, and Dustin nodded. That didn’t sound like much, but of course when the guy wasn’t gone, his brother would be gone, and then something would probably happen with his work, maybe? Dustin liked trying to predict what was going to happen, and he took a handful of greasy popcorn to eat while he waited for the plot to pick up.

She grinned, shoving his shoulder back, “I thought you said you’d never seen this movie,” she teased him. “Besides, it’s not about how everyone changes the world in small ways. It’s about how the main character changed the world by seemingly everyday things.” She made a face at him, showing him that she was teasing as she turned her attention back to the big screen in front of her. Then he said that not having her would hurt him. “You wouldn’t know any differently, so you’d be fine,” she teased. In a much, much softer voice, she added, “Thanks Dustin.” Really, Evelyn knew that she didn’t have a very large impact on much people, but Dustin was one person that she did think she had affected somehow. Obviously not as much of an impact as he had on her, but it was nice for him to say that all the same.
Ev forgot how slow the movie was at the beginning. The flashbacks of George Bailey’s life were very boring at the beginning, to the point that the popcorn Dustin got didn’t last long. Once it was almost gone, Ev reached in and picked up a kernel, tossing it at Dustin’s face while pretending to be entirely focused on the movie. She loved this movie, but she also had a lot of fun teasing Dustin.

Dustin rolled his eyes. “I don’t know about you, but I think that most movies are pretty predictable.” Movies used the same three themes over and over again. Love conquers all. You are important. Everyone can be redeemed. This one was obviously of the ‘you are important’ variety, as Christmas movies tended to be. “Well, the main message that you’re supposed to take away is that you, too, are able to change the world through your everyday actions.” Dustin argued. “You know, monkey see, monkey do. Except for humans, not monkeys.” He was probably talking a little too loudly than was strictly polite in a theatre, but it was half-empty and it wasn’t like these people had never seen the movie before, if they were anything like Evelyn was. The start of the movie was beginning to drag, so Dustin spent most of it fighting Evelyn for the bag of popcorn. Ev tossed a popcorn kernel at him and Dustin grabbed another from the dregs in the bag, aiming right for her ear.

Dustin was right, saying that movies were predictable, but Ev didn't want to admit that, so she just shrugged, pretending like she was focused on the movie. Then he pointed out the whole point of the movie and Ev turned to look at him, totally ready for this argument. "But the main character is entirely different than I am. He gives up everything he wants, all his goals and dreams, to help others. He's outgoing and friendly and everyone likes him. That is nothing like me, so even though that may be the point, it most certainly does not apply when it comes to me." She cocked her head to the side, sizing Dustin up a little to tease him. "You're more like him than I am, honestly," Ev admitted.
Evelyn wasn't expecting Dustin to throw a popcorn kernel back at her. Ok, that was a lie; she was totally expecting it! What she wasn't expecting was for the kernel to hit her on the ear. Did he do that on purpose or was it a lucky shot. "Hey!" Ev whisper-shouted, turning and shoving his shoulder. "Popcorn is for eating, not for throwing, Dustin," she teased, even though she was the first one to throw it. He didn't have any proof of that. "Now stop distracting me, I'm trying to watch the movie," Ev said airily, turning once more to look at the screen. Still, at the same time she was reaching over into the bucket, searching for any more kernels that might be there. In the greasy corner she found a small handful and her lips curled into a devious smile. If it was anyone but Dustin she wouldn't do this, but it was him so it was fine. She turned and looked at Dustin for a second, then quickly reached over and pulled the collar of his shirt so she could toss the kernels into it before he could stop her.
