Why did it make her smile so much when Dustin told her that he only did that with her? She rolled her eyes, trying to play off the fact that it pleased her so much that he messed around with her like that and not other people. "Well you're the only person I would feel comfortable enough to do it back to," she told him with a shrug, sure that he would know that. She didn't get along well with other people well enough. At least, she didn't think she did. When she wasn't with Dustin- or Rocco- she felt incredibly self-conscious. It was a good thing she didn't have to feel that way with him. "You're my best friend, Dustin. I think you're a great person. You're nice and fun to be with and I love how you make me feel better about myself and how you're helping me learn to act around other people. If for nothing else, you make me a better person, and that makes you one." She didn't want Dustin to doubt that he was a good person. He was her best friend; he shouldn't have to wonder about that.

Dustin smiled when Evelyn said that he was the only person she’d be comfortable throwing popcorn back at. “Guess it’s a good thing we have each other, then.” He teased. It wasn’t like popcorn fights were a necessary part of mental health or anything, but they were fun, and they kept Dustin young. Not that he wasn’t young already, but…you know what, popcorn fights were fun, damn it, and that was the only reason he needed to participate in them! Dustin bit his lip when Evelyn began to heap compliments on him, continuing to look away from her. “That’s…really sweet, Ev.” He said after a moment, reaching his hand up to brush away a stray tear. “I don’t know why that worried me all of a sudden.” Dustin said, drawing his knees up to his chest. “But I’m glad that you think I’m a good person.” Evelyn was one of the only people whose opinion really mattered to Dustin, and she was also the only person he trusted to be completely honest about her feelings, so it was nice to have that validation.

Ev nudged her shoulder against Dustin's, smiling back at him. "Guess so," she agreed. Really though, she didn't know what she'd do without Dustin. She probably never would have been able to get out of her bubble without him. Until she met someone else that could make her feel that comfortable ... but Ev didn't think that was really even possible. He seemed embarrassed when Evelyn answered his question, telling him what she thought about him. "I'm not trying to be sweet," she told him with a gentle smile. Being sweet wasn't really a talent of hers, but she was glad she could do it for him. "Don't worry about it. If you're ever worried about that, I'll do what I can to help you out because you are a good person. I don't just think that, it's the truth." She didn't know why she was pushing that so hard, but she wanted to be sure that Dustin knew it.

Evelyn said that she wasn’t trying to be sweet, and Dustin smiled. It was always nice when someone complimented him without meaning to compliment him. It made it feel less fake, somehow. Like she wasn’t just saying it because she knew it was what he wanted to hear. Sometimes Dustin doubted if Evelyn was capable of lying, but other times, he knew that she would do anything to make him feel better, including lying to him. “You’re the best, Ev.” Dustin said, laying his head on her shoulder. “I suppose now that we’re not watching a movie anymore I might be able to trust myself with the popcorn…” He hinted, already reaching his arm to blindly grab for the bowl that Evelyn had brought in earlier so that he could distract himself with food.

Ev chuckled a little when Dustin told her that she was the best. "Now that's something I've never heard with my name before," she teased lightly. Not many knew her well enough or were close enough to her to call her "the best". When it came to general things. Sure when it came to learning or using logic, she might be labeled as such, but ... she paused her thoughts when Dustin put his head on her shoulder and started talking. He seemed somewhat vulnerable right now. It wasn't a good time for her to get distracted by the semantics of what he said. She pulled the bowl of popcorn closer to him, trying to make it easier. But she still wasn't distracted by their previous conversation. "Really though, thanks Dustin. I don't know what I'd do without you. You are ... my closest friend, the first real friend I've ever had." She wasn't exaggerating and now that he brought it up and seemed to be doubting himself she wanted to make sure he knew it. She reached over and patted the top of his head gently. He was like a brother to her. At least, what she imagined it would be like to have a brother.

Dustin wrinkled his nose when Evelyn said she didn’t often hear that she was the best. He needed to do better about telling her how great she was, apparently. Normally Dustin wouldn’t take that kind of burden upon himself, but he was one of Evelyn’s only friends, and evidently no one else thought it was important to tell her she was the best. He didn’t like the idea of holding Evelyn’s self-esteem in his hands, but hopefully she was able to know how awesome she was without his constant reminder. Evelyn reiterated one more time that she didn’t know what she’d do without him, and Dustin slung his arm around her shoulders, pulling her tight against him. “The feeling is mutual, Ev.” He had had friends before, probably more than she had, but none of them got him the way Evelyn did. “Can we just eat popcorn now?” He asked innocently. Dustin wasn’t ready to get into even more mushy gushy stuff. And he was starting to get hungry again.

Dustin was one of the only people in the entire world that Ev would let hug her. She wasn't a particular fan of physical contact, especially with strangers, and since she didn't get to know hardly anyone, they were all strangers to her. Not Dustin though. He got away with things no one else could do. She smiled when he threw an arm around her and gave her a side-hug. "Thanks, Dus," Ev responded, laughing when he said he just wanted to eat popcorn. Of course he wanted the popcorn now. The movie was over and everything. "Here you go," she said, rolling her eyes as she passed the bowl to him. Really, she was just having fun relaxing with her best friend. She didn't know how long he was planning on staying, but there wasn't any pressure. They would just have fun together until he left, as per usual. ---the end--- @dustin
