It wasn't often that the Hufflepuff Common Room was so empty, but Clara wasn't going to complain. It was a bright Saturday afternoon and the sun that spilled into the Common Room was wonderful. The fifth year sat on the floor, right in a bright ray of sunshine, her lavender-colored hair looking even more vibrant than usual. A book borrowed from the library sat in her lap and a sugar quill was clasped between her lips as her bright blue eyes scanned the pages, thought tugging her brows down in the middle. Clara had already renewed the book once...today was the first time since term started up again in January that she really had a free moment to practice a new charm just for fun. Currently, an array of items sat before her: a jar, a bag of glitter, a bottle of water, and flower petals. Clara nodded to herself and her fingers plucked the sugar quill from her lips while her other hand grasped her delicate wand. She pointed it to each of the items, pouring them in one by one, and just enough of each. Lastly, she poured in the water. The glitter in the jar swirled ever so lightly before landing at the bottom of the jar again. Clara finally tore her eyes from the book and gazed at the jar and its watery contents.
"Right," she said, her soft voice full of determination. Clara did a sort of wiggle in her Indian-style seated position on the floor. She shoved the sleeves of her over-sized cream-colored sweater up to her elbows and lifted her wand once more. She said the incantation the book instructed, with careful pronunciation, and the contents swirled in the jar. The petals glowed and floated within the water, shimmering against the glitter and Clara squealed, clapping her hands. She reached out and took the jar in her palms. It was warm to the touch and the petals winked and glimmered softly. It was perfect. She had done it! It was the perfect nightlight! As Clara watched the contents in the jar, they swirled and danced, creating constellations and soft glimmering images. It was like a starry summer night - in a jar.
"Ooh, I'm so excited to try this out tonight!" Clara whispered to herself. She had always felt like the dormitory was too dark for her liking at night - her own room back home had soft lights all along her bed and bookshelf her dad had set up for her a few years ago. Clara knew it would probably annoy her dorm-mates if she did something like that here at Hogwarts but now, if she couldn't sleep, she could just watch her pretty little jar.
"What do you think, Belle?" she asked, reached a hand out to poke the purple pygmy puff who sat dozing next to her thigh, obviously warmed by the sun. She was too adorable. The pygmy puff blinked her bleary eyes and looked at the jar, but fell back asleep. Clara pouted out her lower lip.
"Oh, you'll wake up for my candy, but not for a new spell!" she teased, sticking her tongue out at Belle. But, Clara patted the fluffy pygmy puff with a small hand before she fell back against the floor with a small 'oof!'. Clara closed her eyes against the sun and spread one arm out to the side, her wand resting on her stomach, her other hand holding the sugar quill to her lips. Clara wished it was as warm outside as it was in the spot with the sun shining right down onto her.

@clarahalliet Weekends meant free time to take photographs, so that meant Cordelia was up at the literal crack of dawn to go outside. She had made it a plan to wrap all of her projects by the end of the previous year so that she could start this one with a clean slate. It had almost worked, except that there were a few longer term ones that needed to be extended a few months. Unfortunately those had to be done at specific times and under certain conditions, neither of which were today. Still, it was a nice, bright day out and she couldn’t have asked for better weather than that. The majority of the morning had been spent observing some trees on the edge of the school grounds, trying to get them all framed up as the wind blew their tops back and forth. She easily spent two or three rolls of film trying to get it, and was more than positive at least a few shots managed to capture what she was thinking. The only downside was that there went quite a decent amount of film that could have been spent on other things. The things she did for photography. The other caveat of being out so early also meant complete serenity from most of the students. There were a few here and there walking around later in the morning, but the weather was still cold enough out that a good portion had either stayed inside or were preparing to go to Hogsmeade later in the day. Therein lay her other favorite thing: to go back into the school when nobody else was around. It was almost impossible to escape everyone during the week, but weekends were a different deal.
As morning turned into afternoon and Cordelia grew hungry, she made her way back across the grounds and into the castle once again. Lunch was brief but fulfilling, and back to the common room she went, hoping to get a few assignments done today rather than push them off until the next day. The occasional Hufflepuff would still be idling around in the common room on a Hogsmeade day and today was no different as she pushed the door open and practically creeped in. She could hear voices, or a voice, talking, so that meant that it probably wasn’t going to be extremely quiet. A little noise never hurt though, even if silence was preferable. Crossing the common room, Cordelia snuck a peek at the other person in there. It was the girl with the purple hair. She was a year below right? She was also talking to herself, or Cordelia thought she was at first. When the other girl asked what she thought, Cordelia stopped in her tracks. It took a second to register that there was a name attached to the end of the sentence, someone called Belle. Looking around the room slowly, she could see anyone else. That was kind of…weird. Positive that the other Hufflepuff had yet to see her, Cordelia quickly moved into her dorm and dropped off her camera and bag. Picking up a few books that she needed for her work, she walked back out into the common room again. The girl was now lying on her back in the middle of the floor. One of the pluses of having an empty common room Cordelia supposed.
Softly padding over to a table, she set her things down, looking back at the girl once again. There was a jar filled with something swirling around and glowing. It was kind of cool. Glancing at her work for a few seconds, she decided that striking up a conversation wasn’t exactly a bad idea. She had been trying to open up more after all. Standing up, Cordelia took a deep breath and walked over towards the spot where the girl was lying on the floor. “D-Did you d-do that?” She asked rather fast, pointing at the glass jar on the floor. There was something about the way it moved around that really intrigued her.

Clara, lying in the middle of the floor, her hair splayed out against the rug, had closed her eyes against the sunlight that shone down upon her. It was so peaceful in the common room for once, and Clara planned to savor the moment. A small, content sigh slipped from her lips and she giggled softly as she felt a small weight upon her stomach: Belle had climbed up and snuggled onto Clara right there. Currently, Clara's hair matched Belle's floof. A voice reached her ears and Clara's blue eyes flew open - she had not heard the other girl approach - and her hair quickly turned into a shade of blue. Though, it turned back to its lavender just as quick, when her heart stopped lurching. Clara tried to sit up, but Belle was too cute laying there on her stomach, dozing. But, the young girl picked the pygmy puff up and cradled her in her lap as she grunted into a sitting position. A grin swept over her face, lighting it up completely. "I did!" she exclaimed with a small giggle. "It's...kind of useless. I mean... it's pretty, right? I don't like how dark it gets in our dormitories so much, so I figured..." A small blush colored Clara's cheeks, but she reached her small hands out and lifted the jar to the other girl. She knew she was a year ahead of her, but as shy and timid as she was, Clara hadn't really spoken to her in the past. cordelia regan smith

@clarahalliet Cordelia stepped back slightly as the girl lying on the floor reacted to her asking the question. Her hair changed colors…and it took Cordelia few seconds to realize that it went from that purple color to blue, and then back to the one it was before, all right before her eyes. That was definitely something she didn’t see every day. There were a few metamorphmagi she had come across, but she had never actually seen one change their appearance in front of her like that. There were new experiences every day in the Hufflepuff common room every day apparently. That still didn’t change the fact that the girl had been talking to someone that wasn’t there. As she sat up though, Cordelia saw her move her hands to hold something that looked like a puffball of sorts, and the realization that it was a pygmy puff. Now all the pieces to the puzzle fit together. She was starting to think that metamorphmagi were just an odd bunch.
It seemed like the other girl was interested in talking about the jar though, which was a good thing since that was all Cordelia had to bring to the table right now. She seemed to be embarrassed by the fact that she made a nightlight out of it though. Cordelia couldn’t really tell exactly how it looked with the sun shining on it the way it was right now, but if it actually glowed, the slow swirling of the light would more than likely be soothing. “N-No I think it’s a g-good idea.” She reached out as the girl lifted it up for her to look at it. Taking the jar in her hands, she observed it. She knew of at least one charm that could be used for it, but the rest was completely new to her. “How’d you m-make it?”

A small smile quirked at Clara's lips as the other took her jar to examine it curiously. Clara glimpsed down to her book and had to move Belle from the pages, as both were sitting in her lap at once. "I found a book in the library," Clara said, her smile growing tentatively. "I like charms, I guess. They're fun to play around with." She glimpsed back down to the book. "This spell, though, it was for just a jar and some water. I wanted to do something...fun with it. So I added glitter. I wasn't sure if it would work the same way, but the glitter doesn't seem to be affecting it at all?" Clara was excited to see how the jar would look tonight on her bedside table. "I just hope it doesn't bother my roommates. I wanted to find something that was soft." She nodded her head towards the jar, prattling on. "I used a Featherweight Charm on the glitter, so it wouldn't sink to the bottom. It seems to be working?" Realizing that she was rambling, Clara shut her mouth and blushed slightly, her hands nervously petting Belle who had finally woken up. cordelia regan smith

@clarahalliet Cordelia’s eyebrows raised as her fellow Hufflepuff said that she had found the charm to do all of this in a book in the library. She had read through a good chunk of the charms books, mostly looking for healing spells and other practical things, but never really dwelled on the fun books. For the most part, she didn’t even know fun charms spells like this existed, but it kind of made sense. She always figured these were little secrets passed around because one person figured out how to do it, not actually recorded in a book so the world could know. Constant surprises like this made every day that much more…magical, for lack of a better word. But that was what made all of this the way it was, right? Cordelia was still staring into the jar, twisting it around to see the glitter spin, as the girl explained how she had gone all about it. Nodding her head in agreement that the glitter wasn’t affecting the light, she went to hand it back over. “L-Looks like the glitter is r-reflecting it…m-maybe.” Without seeing the actual spell, she had no idea, granted it was quite the ingenious way to go about making a light source out of water and glitter.
“It’s hard to t-tell how b-bright it is out here.” Not really thinking, Cordelia took her wand out and pointed it at the curtains to make them close in front of the window. The sun was bright enough to still permeate through them, but the overall effect of the light in the jar was easier to see now. “F-Featherweight Ch-charm? N-Never thought of that…” Made sense though. Keeping the glitter floating in a circle was what gave the light the soft glow that it had. “S-So you like charms t-too?”
