Rory was positive that he was going to lose this contest. He wasn't fast when it came to picking berries, he'd never done it before. However, he was having fun and was positive that Emmy was too and that was the whole point. So he did his best and stopped when he heard Emmy shout that time was up. He looked at her basket as she approached and laughed. "How are we going to do this? Just by looking at the baskets, because yours is more full than mine is," he pointed out. "Or do you want to be official and count so you can see how many more you got?" Honestly, Rory wasn't upset that she won. He'd expected it from the get-go. Now he was interested to see what Emmy would want to do.

Emmy shrugged when Rory asked how they were going to determine which one of them one. “It seems like a waste of time to count out all of the berries.” She reasoned. They still had time left in the fields, and she didn’t particularly want to use it sitting on the ground and counting berries just to reach the same eventual answer. “How about instead I teach you how to pick faster?” Emmy asked, nudging Rory gently so as not to disturb any of the berries in his basket. She was supposed to be a good friend and a good host, after all, and helping Rory get better was probably more productive than teasing him about how slow he was.

Rory shrugged when Emmy said that counting the berries seemed like a waste of time. She was right with that, and he wasn't too surprised she didn't want to count them all. He wasn't sure if either of them had enough patience to count the amount of berries that they both picked. He made a face at her when she said she could teach him how to be faster. Then he sighed, "Fine. Show me how." He figured Emmy would do it anyway, but encouraged her nonetheless. Maybe someday he'd be able to show this off for someone, though he really didn't know who he would do it for, unless it was her again. He still didn't have too many friends since the move. He didn't care though. Emmy was good enough for him.

Emmy managed to turn just in time to see Rory making a funny face. “What’s that face for, mister?” Emmy said, crossing her arms across her chest and pouting at Rory for making a face when she was just trying to be a good friend by making the suggestion. She decided she wasn’t going to show him anything until he answered her question, and continued to wait with her arms folded. “Don’t you want to learn how to pick berries faster?” She asked. Sure, it wasn’t going to be an extremely important life skill in the future, but if they decided to go berry picking the next year, then he wouldn’t appreciate the information so that he had a chance of beating her if they had another competition? Emmy didn’t understand how Rory could be so ungrateful.

Rory laughed when Emmy made a pouty face at him. He found her reactions to his teasing funny and just couldn't help himself. "I dunno," he answered with a shrug, when she demanded why he made a face at her. He didn't really have a reason, he just did it. When he was with Emmy he didn't really think about what he was doing, since she rarely seemed to. He just did whatever felt right. It felt right to tease her. He laughed, "I was messing around," he admitted. "Go ahead and teach me how to pick berries the fast way." She obviously wanted to, and he wasn't against learning it so Rory decided to just let her do as she wished.

Rory said that he didn’t know why he had made the face at her, and Emmy had to keep herself from pressing further. There was a chance that Rory was actually telling the truth and there wasn’t a reason behind his facial expression, and she didn’t want to ruin her friendship with her best friend over her own paranoia. Rory said that he was messing around, and Emmy pouted a little longer at that before straightening. “We do not mess around when it comes to berries, Roman.” She said primly, using his first name instead of his nickname to get a rise out of him. When Rory agreed to learn the fast way, Emmy lead the pair of them over to the nearest bush. “It’s all about where you pull from.” Emmy explained, pinching the strawberry at its base before tugging on it. “If you pull from the berry itself, you have to pull harder to get it to come off.” She informed Rory. “You try.”

Emmy seemed to believe him when he said he didn't know why he made the face and Rory was glad. He wasn't always too good at explaining his actions and didn't want to have to figure out something to say to her about it. He'd rather she just let it go, which he knew wasn't something that Emmy was particularly good at. She said they didn't mess around with berries and Rory already had a quip, but then she called him Roman and he forgot it as he glared at her. "Emmy," he said, his voice somewhere between a growl and a whine, though he wasn't quite sure how that was possible. He hated it when people called him that. Still, he followed her to the bush and watched as she showed him where to pull. "Like this?" Rory asked as he picked the berry in the exact same way as she showed him. It didn't seem too hard, and the strawberry came off quickly. "I think I got it," he told her with a smile as he picked two more quickly. Huh. Apparently there was a strategy for picking strawberries. Who would've known?

Emmy couldn’t help but laugh when Rory responded to her calling him by his first name. That was always a great way to get a rise out of Rory, and his response was just… well, funny, because he was whining, but not. “It’s okay, I won’t call you that again.” Emmy said, keeping her fingers crossed behind her back just in case. Sometimes a girl needed certain tools at her disposal – like her best friend’s full name. Rory knew hers too, but Emmy didn’t mind being called Emilia as much as Rory minded being called Roman, so it was kind of an unfair trade. Rory began using Emmy’s method to pick the strawberries, and said that he thought he understood it. Emmy was about to suggest them having another competition when she heard her name being called between the bushes. She hadn’t realized how much time had gone past while she and Rory were picking berries, and it seemed like her aunt was calling them so they could get ready to go.

Emmy promised she wouldn't call her that and Rory narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. He wasn't exactly sure why, but he didn't know if he believed her. Emmy was normally pretty good at tricking him about things like this, but it wasn't like she was asking him to do anything. He nodded, not saying anything back. She watched him picking a few strawberries and then he thought he heard someone calling her name. "Is that your aunt?" he asked, looking around even though he couldn't see anyone. "Do we have to go?" Rory honestly wasn't sure how far they'd gone from her aunt and uncle, so he decided to let Emmy take the lead. Granted, she normally took the lead, so that wasn't news in any way.

Emmy nodded when Rory asked if it was her aunt who was calling her. She hadn’t thought that they had been picking berries for that long, but she supposed they had promised to get Rory home in time for dinner. The drive back wouldn’t be as long as the drive there, Emmy hoped, because they could spend the whole time eating the berries they had picked. She nodded again when he asked if they had to leave then. Before they got back to her aunt and uncle, though, Emmy had something to tell Rory. “This has been the absolute best day ever.” Emmy said, smiling at her best friend. Before she could lose her courage, she leaned over and pecked his cheek. “Thanks, Rory.” Then, she took off through the rows of berries to find her aunt so they could leave.
