Dom nodded when Séamus told her that he liked both, just one more than the other. "I tend to like whichever one it is currently," she admitted with a shrug. She wasn't surprised that he liked spring more, now that she thought of it. Spring had more of the green plants that he loved so much. She smiled, "Yes, but until then I'm going to appreciate this," Dom informed him. One thing she loves about winter was frost on the branches in the morning. She found it entrancing and fascinating at the same time. If she wasn't caught up in the spring in a few weeks, she'd probably miss it.

Dominique said that she liked whichever season it was at the moment, and Shay nodded. “Easygoing?” He teased. It seemed to him like the people without preferences were apathetic or easygoing, but Dominique didn’t seem to be either of those things, so maybe he was going to have to reconsider that idea. Dom said that until the ice melted, she was going to appreciate the landscape, and Séamus nodded. “I th-think s-sometimes kn-knowing s-something is g-going to end m-makes it m-more sp-special.” He appreciated summer so much more because he knew autumn was coming, and the school year (he didn’t like it, but he appreciated it) because he knew that he was going to have to go back to his Muggle home at the end of it.

Dom laughed when Séamus called her easygoing. Not many people would label her as that. "Maybe more impulsive," she corrected. "I can't help but like the season I'm in because I get caught up in all the different things I can do in it." Sure, that was a good enough explanation, right? Hopefully he understood what she meant. Dom nodded when he said that knowing things were going to end made them more special. "I don't like endings." she said abruptly. "Especially surprise ones." She mentally facepalmed. He had no idea what she was talking about, of course. She didn't even know! Well ... sort of. Keep it together, Dom!

When his assessment of Dom was corrected – impulsive, not easygoing – the Slytherin nodded. That seemed to jive better with who Dominique was, and her reasoning on why that made her feel the way she did was solid. Séamus was going to have to add impulsive to his list.
Dom said that he didn’t like endings, and Shay looked over at her, trying to work out what she was thinking. He couldn’t, but he knew that she had to be thinking about something, to say what she had so suddenly. “It c-can b-be s-sad if you’re n-not p-prepared.” He agreed, not sure whether or not Dom wanted to talk more about her distaste for endings. He was assuming not, because they had agreed that they weren’t good at discussing feelings, but even if you didn’t like doing something, sometimes you found yourself doing it anyways. Shay didn’t say anything more, hoping that Dom didn’t feel pressure to keep talking if she didn’t want to.

Dom sighed as she continue to look out on the frozen lake. "I'm never prepared for endings," she admitted after a few seconds. "I mean, not real ones. Seasons, sure, but when things end in real life I always get taken by surprise, and not in a good way." It was happening now, as the end of her last year was approaching fast. It happened last year when Ethan was taken away from her so suddenly. It seemed to happen all the time and Dom ... maybe she was having a hard time seeing the new beginnings because she was so caught up in the endings. She trailed off, not knowing how to explain herself, or even if she wanted to.

Shay cocked his head at Dom as she said she was never prepared for endings. She wasn’t turning to look at him the way he was looking at her, so Séamus took the opportunity to study Dominique’s face, to see if he could make sense of her emotions. “M-most important th-things end s-suddenly, d-don’t th-they?” Shay asked quietly. Time always seemed to hurtle by faster when an important event was coming, and then, all of a sudden, boom, it was over. Séamus didn’t want to tell Dom that it was normal to be surprised by endings, because it wasn’t helpful to say that she fit in the same box of emotions as everyone else. Everyone had their own experiences, and even though she wasn’t being specific, the Slytherin could see that the Ravenclaw had a unique sort of ending that she had to come to terms with.

Dom's throat tightened as Séamus spoke and his words echoed in her mind. Most important things end suddenly. Apparently they did for her. Her mind was thrown back to memories of Ethan and she closed her eyes, trying to fight them away. What was wrong with her? She hadn't behaved like this right after his death, why was she doing it now? She whimpered softly, hoping that Séamus didn't hear her, even though he probably did. He was right beside her. "Sorry," she whispered. She wasn't good company right now at all.

Dominique apologized, though for what Séamus didn’t know. So she was a little more quiet than usual – that really didn’t bother Shay, because at least now he didn’t feel so bad about being quiet himself. Shay smiled softly at Dom, and then took one of her hands in his, flipping it so the back of her hand was facing him. He took the quill out of his bag and ink, looking silently at Dom for permission before beginning to draw on her skin. “If it w-wasn’t icy I w-would g-give you one.” Séamus explained as he finished the slightly sloppy sketch of the flower on the back of her hand. “It’s an iris.” There was another sentence with no stuttering! That was impressive, especially given how their conversation started. “H-hope.” He said, in case Dom was wondering why he had chosen that flower out of the many that he knew. There was also the added bonus of irises being an expression of gratitude to have someone’s friendship, but the hope part was what Séamus was more interested in at the moment.

Séamus didn't respond at all when she apologized, though really what could he say? That he forgave her? It wasn't like she really did anything to him. Then he took her hand, along with a quill and some ink. Dom nodded at his silent question, extremely curious about what he was about to do. After all, it wasn't every day when you had someone wanting to draw on your hand. When he was done, she brought her hand closer to her face and smiled. It looked like a very pretty flower. Then he told her it meant hope and Dom looked back at the flower. She liked this one. "When spring comes, will you show me one?" she asked. She didn't want to ask for him to give her one, but she wanted to see a real Iris now, knowing what it was and what it meant.

Dominique inspected the flower that he had drawn on her hand, and Shay watched to look for her reaction, wondering what she thought about the flower and the drawing both. It seemed that the drawing must have intrigued her and the flower spoken to her, because she asked if he would show her a real one. “W-when sp-spring c-comes, I’ll sh-show you all the f-flowers you w-want.” Séamus promised. That was about the only thing that he could give her in repayment for her tutoring service. Dominique probably knew most of the plants they used for class, but flowers were a totally different beast, because you had to go looking to get any good at them. When you added on the extra layer of the flowers’ meanings, which even fewer people knew, then things started to get interesting. “W-well, all the ones I c-can.” He added, just in case Dominique fancied a flower that wasn’t found in the Hogwarts greenhouses, also known as Séamus’s only source of botanical specimens.

Dom gave a small smile when Séamus agreed to show her the flower, along with others as well. "Thank you, I'd like that very much," she said softly. She looked at the drawing on the back of her hand and then back to him. "You draw very well," she commented, "Would you mind drawing an Iris on a piece of parchment so I can keep it?" Her smile turned slightly mischievous. "Or else I won't be able to wash my hand, which would be highly frowned upon, I'm assuming." Hopefully her teasing wouldn't make him nervous, but Dom couldn't help it. She didn't want to be sad all the time and since Séamus was making an effort to distract her, she was going to try and help him.

Dominique said that he drew well, and Shay felt blush warming his cheeks. “J-just f-flowers. D-don’t ask m-me to d-draw anything else or y-you’ll b-be d-disappointed.” He admitted. He could draw flowers well because they had taken root in his head, and he knew what they were supposed to look like, inside and out. Nothing else was like that for Séamus. When Dom asked for him to draw an iris on a piece of parchment, Shay nodded. “It m-might n-not l-look as g-good. B-because p-parchment isn’t alive.” It was easy to draw something living on a living medium, like a hand, rather than a dead one. Séamus had parchment with him from his earlier studies, and he took a blank piece out, quickly sketching an iris on it. “N-now p-people w-won’t th-think you’re g-gross.” He said teasingly.

Séamus said that he could only draw flowers and Dom laughed lightly. "That's more than I can draw. I'm terrible," she confessed easily. She didn't care that she wasn't good at drawing, she preferred to do other activities more anyway. Then he said it wouldn't look as good on parchment and Dom's head cocked to the side. "Why does it make a difference, drawing on parchment or something alive?" Dom wasn't trying to be inquisitive and didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable, but she couldn't help herself. Sometimes she had to ask her questions. She laughed again at his last comment. "Well ... they won't think I'm gross because I won't wash my hand," she corrected lightly. "I'm sure I'll do other things to gross them out." Dom paused for a moment, thinking for a second. "Would you stop talking to me if I did something that grossed you out?" Not that Dom wanted him to stop talking with her, but she sometimes had that kind of an effect on people ... even on accident.

Dom said that she couldn’t draw anything, flowers included, and Shay gave her a sympathetic smile. “W-we all h-have our st-strengths.” He told her fondly. Even if Dominique couldn’t draw to save her life, she was bright, and she was funny, and she was one of the few people that Séamus actually enjoyed being around for more than a minute at a time. Dom asked why it made a difference what he drew on, and Shay paused for a moment. “Alive l-looks b-better on alive.” He said, hoping that the explanation made some sort of sense. “I c-could d-draw a d-dried iris b-better on p-parchment.” Because dry flowers were dead, they looked less strange on a medium that was also dead. Séamus let out a laugh when Dom said that people wouldn’t think she was gross for not washing her hand – implying, of course, that they would think that she was gross for other reasons. When Dom asked if he would stop talking to her if he got grossed out, Shay furrowed his eyebrows. “I c-can’t th-think of anything th-that w-would g-gross m-me out to b-begin w-with.” He admitted. This was a boy who enjoyed playing in the dirt – not many things were disgusting to him anymore.

Dom laughed when Séamus said that they all had their strengths, implying that he agreed with her. She wasn't offended, of course, she just thought it was funny, especially since that implication was probably unintentional. When he described his feelings about drawing on things that are alive and dead, Dom nodded with interest. She'd never heard of anything like that before, but it sounded interesting, and definitely like something that Séamus would come up with. She liked the fact that she felt she was getting to know him better now. "Well now I just want to see you draw a dried Iris," Dom admitted with a shrug. She smiled again when he laughed. Dom loved making people laugh. "Well, you don't know all the things I get into," she told him honestly. Granted, if he didn't think he'd get grossed out period then there wasn't much of a discussion, but Dom did tend to get dirty and messy and she played around, especially when she was outside.
