Today was the day. Today, Cecelia was going to get detention - or try her best to do it. She had been thinking a while about what exactly could happen to her if she were to get detention, but she didn't think that being out after curfew once would be enough to strip her of her prefect status. And if it was, then at least Susan Windsor would be happy. She had noticed that the other prefect was avoiding her - it wasn't like they could have missed out on patrolling together for so many months and have it not be an accident. She was waiting outside of the Room of Requirement, just as she told Grey she would be, and began mentally composing the letter that she would be sending to Braelynn when this was over. She didn't think that her sister would be thrilled to hear the Cecelia had gotten detention, but there were sure to be questions about Grey, since Bay had never actually seen them become friends. If it was anyone else, she probably would have been bothered about questions as to whether or not she saw Grey in a romantic lighting, because of course boys and girls couldn't just be friends with each other, but Braelynn was too much of a Ravenclaw to make that mistake.
Cece wasn't sure what she was going to ask the room for when Grey appeared. A place to hide, or to hang out? Maybe she would just ask for a room, and see what the magical place thought that she required. Cecelia leaned against the stone wall casually, occasionally glancing down the corridor to see when her companion would arrive.

@cecelia Thankfully Grey had managed to figure out the time after his encounter with Cecelia earlier in the day. That had been a rather stressful situation, wandering around the castle without the slightest clue if he was supposed to be somewhere at a specific time or not. He couldn’t even recall if there was anything extremely important that he had previously scheduled, not that it mattered at this point anyways. Dinner was over, he had spent the majority of the afternoon fixing his watch after figuring out what time it really was, and now he was making his way up to the fifth floor to meet Cecelia at the Room of Requirement. Hopefully she could get it to work, because he certainly couldn’t. Passing by a few smaller groups of Gryffindors and Ravenclaws also making their way back to their respective common rooms, Grey took the detour down the corridor that separated the main stairwell from the hall that the Room of Requirement was in. If he hadn’t used it often for newspaper meetings, he probably wouldn’t know where it actually was. These days though, it seemed like everyone had an idea of how to get to it.
Turning down the final corridor, he spotted Cecelia leaning up against the wall. There wasn’t a door there yet, so that meant she had yet to get the room to open. He raised his hand in a half-wave to get her attention from the end of the corridor, picking up his pace. Hopefully they could hop into the room before anybody else wandered down. It was funny; he had seen her only a few hours ago but it seemed like it had been a lot longer than that. There weren’t too many times where Grey could say that he actively met up with the same people throughout the day. “Hey,” he stated as he stopped in front of her. “You know how to work this thing?”

Cecelia hadn’t been waiting long when Grey appeared at the end of the hall. That wasn’t a surprise, since she had rushed up after dinner rather quickly in order to make sure she didn’t leave Grey hanging. When he waved at her, Cecelia raised her hand to wave back, smiling. She straightened up from her position leaning against the wall, unsure of how to greet Grey. The hug she had given him earlier in the day hadn’t been planned, and normally their greetings weren’t really physical, since one or both of them was already occupied in something when the conversation started. “Hey.” She responded back, the word feeling strange and formal in her mouth. She nodded when Grey asked if she knew how to work the room – didn’t he? “I wasn’t sure what we wanted to do in the meantime, so I was waiting for you, if you have any ideas.” Cecelia explained. She didn’t mention her idea of just letting the room give them whatever it thought they needed, because she knew it would sound much, much stranger out loud then it did in her head. She was also a bit terrified to see what the room thought she wanted, because if the past month was anything to go by, Cecelia wasn’t as great at knowing her own desires as she thought. “I’ve also never tried to go in with another person, so that should be interesting…” The Room of Requirement had been her place of solitude when everything was spinning too fast, and she had specifically asked for everyone else to be shut out. It had also been her passageway to her meetings with Elaine, which were, by their nature, private. Going in with someone else was going to be…fun?

@cecelia The eternal question: what to do in the free time before trying to actively get in trouble. Grey could name any number of possible things, but seeing as they were about to use the room of requirement to kill said free time, almost anything was possible. He had seen the room in various states under differing conditions, none of which had been because of him, so it was up to Cecelia to figure out what shape it should take today. “Something to hang around in for a few hours wouldn’t be bad. Any set time on when you wanted to head back to the common room?” He realized that he had never really asked that question. A few hours of doing whatever willed them in the room of requirement wouldn’t be bad, as long as there was actually something to do. Although, he knew he’d get a kick out of it if it ended up being an empty room with two chairs in it. Trying to sit there and make small talk for any period of time was going to be difficult, no matter who it was with.
Cecelia brought up that she had never been in the room with another person, which was funny, because he had only exclusively been in there with other people. Not that a fact like that mattered, he simply thought it was interesting in the moment. “I’ve only used it for the newspaper. And I’ve also never been able to get the door to show up on my own…” He glanced down the hallway to see if it was still empty or not. It seemed like a lot of students liked going right back to their common rooms after dinner. “So I guess it’s up to you to work the magic.” Grey stepped back slightly to give Cecelia room, to do whatever it was that people did to summon the room. Running late had its perks, until vital details, like how to work the room of requirement, were completely missed.

Grey offered his opinion for what the room should be like – something to hang around in for a few hours. That shouldn’t be too hard, though Cecelia hadn’t tried to spend an extended period of time with someone in…forever, really. Would they play board games or something? Cece didn’t know. Grey asked when she wanted to head back to the common room, and Cecelia shrugged her shoulders. “I figure a half hour after curfew should be good.” She said. “That way they know that we were intentionally out after curfew, but won’t think…indecent things.” She said. Cecelia had caught more than a few couples roaming through the halls in the wee hours of the morning with their hair mussed and their clothes askew, and those had always been her least favorite people to confront, because they always looked so embarrassed when they realized the implications of being caught.
“That’s strange.” Cecelia commented idly when Grey said that he hadn’t ever been able to get the door to show up on his own. “Maybe I need to give you lessons.” She added with a little bit of a laugh. When Grey said it was up to her to work the magic, Cecelia automatically extended her hand for his, assuming that the room might take some of his ideas into account if they were making skin to skin contact. Cece paced back and forth three times. I need someplace to stay for a while. She repeated in her head. When she looked at the wall, a simple oak door had appeared, and when Cece touched the handle, it swung inwards. The room had made…a home? Yes, there was a little living space, and a kitchen, and even a bed pushed into the corner. Cecelia let out a laugh. Maybe she should have been a little more specific than that. “Where do you want to start?” Cece asked, somehow unaware of the fact that she was still holding Grey’s hand.

@cecelia Only half an hour past curfew? Grey wasn’t going to question it, considering the fact that Cecelia was the prefect here and probably knew when people were and were not in the dorms by that point. He always liked coming back a few hours later. Getting work done for the paper was one thing, but most of the time it was because he was asleep elsewhere. If he couldn’t manage it in the dorms, then getting sleep somewhere else needed to happen. Cecelia’s other point kind of shocked him though. People would think they were doing other things if they were out later than that? Sure, there were the occasional couples doing whatever their hearts desired in abandoned classrooms past lights out, but would people really think the same about the two of them? Grey stopped the train of thought there, realizing that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to know the answer. He forgot sometimes that this was still a school, and students liked to talk. What probably wouldn’t phase him at all could be completely different for Cecelia.
“You’re not the first one to say that,” he chuckled. It was strange though. The room seemed to work for everyone else he was always with, and he could even go as far as to instruct others on how to get it to open. Yet it didn’t open for him. Not that it really mattered all that much in the end, just that it was frustrating that he seemed to be the only person in Hogwarts that the room believed didn’t need it. “We only have a few months left, so no need to worry about it.” It had been quite the mystery for the last six and a half years though.
Grey didn’t move away as Cecelia reached for his hand, instead following her through her pacing. He had no idea what she was thinking of to get the door to appear, but it eventually did so after a few paces back and forth. In they went as she led him inside the room of requirement. It apparently decided to take the shape of a home. “That’s new.” Grey stated, mostly to himself. He had never seen this form before, and could only imagine what she had thought of to conjure this up. “Looks like the room thinks we want to play house. Can’t say I’ve had to do that since my sisters forced me to when we were little…”

Cecelia wasn’t surprised to hear that she wasn’t the first one to say that Grey’s inability to use the Room of Requirement was strange. She was, however, going to be surprised if she wasn’t the first one to offer to do something about it. “A few months is still plenty of time to learn.” She pointed out. And it was kind of fun, to be able to have anything your heart desired, as long as it didn’t involve food. Cecelia had considered getting more creative with her uses of the room, but she had never needed anything enough to think that the room would be willing to give it to her.
Grey’s warm felt warm in hers as they paced, and Cecelia wondered when was the proper time to let go. She figured that Grey would release her whenever he was ready. And if not…they could just keep holding hands. There was nothing weird about that, was there? Friends held hands all the time. Cece laughed a little when Grey said that the room was ‘new’. She tended to agree – it was generally a lot smaller, and a lot less furnished, when Cecelia came here on her own. Grey said that the room wanted them to play house, and Cecelia shook her head a little. She had never played that game as a child – too busy doing other, “more important” things – but from what she understood, it was generally for girls who were pretending to grow up to be domestics. Cecelia had never wanted to be a stay-at-home anything, so even if she had had the opportunity to play house, she probably wouldn’t have taken it. “I asked it for a place to stay a while.” Cecelia explained. “I guess the room and I have a different opinion of what constitutes a while.” She said, laughing again. After a brief pause, Cecelia turned to Grey. “…So, should we see if there’s a game of Exploding Snap somewhere?” She would have suggested chess, but Exploding Snap seemed a lot more fun, and also a lot more Grey. Cece wasn’t particularly good at it, but hey, failing was half the fun of a game!

@cecelia Cecelia had a point; a few months was plenty of time to learn how to properly use the room of requirement. Though how often he’d be using it in the last few months of school was the one counterpoint to that. Once he handed the reigns of the newspaper over to the next editor-in-chief and told them about the secret meetings with the advice columnist, it was then their problem to deal with. He would be done. And that was the only real thing he could think of that he used the room for. Meetings, club and private sessions alike, and that was it. “And if it never works? Then I’ve wasted time that could be spent studying for NEWTs or something.” Like that was even a believable concept coming from him. He’d cram the few weeks before the tests and then hope for the best. Just like he had done with every test since first year. It was a pretty good study method. Maximized free time before tests and meant he didn’t need to spend as much time worrying about them as everyone else did.
As he continued to look around the room and the strange design it had decided to take, Cecelia mentioned that she had asked for a place to stay for a while. Apparently the room took that to mean a small house and went with it. Quite the sense of humor it had. “Some kinds of magic like clear cut lines. Maybe it sensed a need for being gone longer than an hour or so.” Grey shrugged his shoulders. “Who knows though, right? Magic likes to be mysterious.” He realized that those two sentences somewhat contradicted themselves, but he didn’t care. He knew he wasn’t wrong, even if it wasn’t properly phrased. Certain spells required specific wand motions and articulate spell chants, while others were simply beyond comprehension.
Exploding Snap? He hadn’t played that in a few years. He used to be wrangled into tournaments in the Gryffindor common room until he was covered in soot and looked like he had spells misfired in his face. Right now though, that seemed rather violent and energetic for trying to hide out before breaking curfew. “I’m more of a chess person, but I’m always down for Exploding Snap.” He wouldn’t go too hard on her if she wasn’t an expert at it. Starting to turn away, Grey realized that they were still holding hands. It had only been seconds since they stepped into the room, but he had already forgotten about it. Looking down at their hands, he let go, slowly. “I’ll check this side of the room.”

Grey asked what would happen if he never learned how to use the room properly, citing missing time on studying as his reason not to try. Cecelia chuckled, not believing that Grey was actually going to study. She didn’t think she’d ever seen him so much as look at homework (at least homework that was his), and half the time it seemed like teachers were yelling at him for sleeping in class. N.E.W.T.s probably weren’t as big of a priority as he was making them out to be at the moment. “It’s a new experience?” She suggested. Even if Grey couldn’t get the room to work, maybe they could figure out why that was, and then figure out if they could fix that. Since Grey’s younger sister would still be in school after they both graduated, they could pop back in the next year, just to try it. Of course, that was also a long, convoluted plan for something that didn’t matter that much in the end. Cecelia shrugged when Grey said that sometimes magic liked clear-cut lines. “It’s never done this sort of thing to me before.” She pointed out. Then again, normally she didn’t really want much other than a place to be alone, so furnishing and the like weren’t important to her. “You think the room wants us to stay here together?” She scoffed when Grey suggested that the room sensed that they needed to be gone longer than an hour. Sure, Cecelia had considered running away before and leaving Britain and all its bad memories behind, but why the hell would she run away to a room? And why would she bring Grey with her? “Mysterious, indeed.” Cecelia agreed in a murmur. At the declaration that Grey was more of a chess person, Cecelia laughed, again not believing him for one second. Grey released her hand, and Cecelia flushed slightly, wondering if she was thinking too much into why they had stayed holding hands in the first place. “I’ll check the kitchen.” She said. There were always cards in kitchen drawers, right? Apparently the room agreed with her (or knew what she wanted) since the first drawer Cecelia opened presented her with a pack of pristine Exploding Snap cards. They wouldn’t stay pristine for long. “Found them!” Cecelia called, sliding into one of the chairs and placing the cards on the kitchen table. grey xavier slater

@cecelia A new experience. That was one way to put it. Apparently it was funny that he would rather study for NEWTs too. Everyone seemed to forget that he was actually good at school work when he applied himself. It was just the ‘when’ was hard to come by. Barely scraping through into upper level courses, much to his classmates dismay, was always fun. But he had a goal now, entering Auror training, and while everyone he knew that was one kept saying that it wasn’t as hard as it seemed, he still wanted to pass the classes that mattered with flying colours. Obviously he still had his fall back plan of working at the Daily Prophet, and he was sure they would readily hire him after the work he had done both before and during the tournament. Working alongside the professionals during the First Task was actually thrilling. For some reason, that job route was starting to interest him more. Being an Auror came first though, seeing as he was already taking steps towards it.
Grey chuckled lightly at the idea of the room having a sense of humor and wanting the two of them to stay there longer. He had a feeling it was more likely Cecelia’s subconscious want or need to have a permanent place that had caused the room to turn out this way, his accompaniment probably only solidifying that. “It is rather cozy looking. I might have to stay the night if it doesn’t kick me out when you go.” Then he realized there was also that part of the room that probably interpreted some deeper meaning with them entering. He tried to wipe those thoughts away, not even wanting to enter that zone of thinking. Obviously students before them would use it for that. “But the couch in the common room is just as comfortable.”
Again, it seemed like his comment about chess was funny to Cecelia. He wasn’t exactly a funny person without wanting to be, at least he didn’t think he was. “Something wrong with liking a sophisticated game? Might not look it, but I’m actually rather decent at it,” he pointed out, trying to make light of the jabs that each laugh made at him. Technically he was bad at it, at least compared to some students, but he could definitely do a number against those not used to the violent nature of the game. Turning off emotions while mercilessly sending his chess pieces to their death was always a great way to intimidate the competition. Unfortunately it seemed like he wouldn’t be able to do that honor with Cecelia, nor would he in the first place. She deserved a proper match.
Regardless, they were playing Exploding Snap, and now they were searching for a set. Cecelia had the kitchen, so Grey decided to go to the bedroom portion, pulling out drawers in a nightstand to see if it happened to be there. He didn’t have a lot of time to search though, because she found what she was looking for almost immediately. Returning to the kitchen table, he sat opposite her. “Ladies first, it’s only fair,” he stated, in his most chivalrous tone as possible. There was no way he was going to win this match now.

Grey said that the room was cozy-looking, and Cecelia couldn’t disagree with that. At his comment about staying the night, though, everything began to fall together. The room didn’t just want her to stay with Grey for a game or two – it wanted them to stay together overnight. And there was only one bed. Cecelia began to flush bright red, and frantically began to think of something, anything other than what mischief the Room of Requirement might be getting into with her and Grey. She was still fairly certain that she looked like a tomato, but Cecelia hoped that either Grey wouldn’t notice it, or he would ignore it. Honestly, she couldn’t see how someone could not notice someone as pale as Cecelia blushing that badly, but stranger things had happened. She managed to force her complexion back under control before Grey asked her what was wrong with liking a sophisticated game. “No, nothing wrong with it.” Cecelia said hastily. “You’re just not the type I’d imagine liking chess.” The only people she knew of that liked chess or played it competitively were purebloods with nothing better to do, since their parents were going to be handing them a fat inheritance and they didn’t need to work a job of their own if they didn’t want to. It wasn’t intended to be an insult, and Cece hoped that Grey didn’t see it that way. Cece took a moment to prepare herself before beginning the game of Exploding Snap. It was a fast-paced game, so if she was at all flustered at the beginning of it, she knew that she was going to lose even more badly than she would otherwise. Once she had her wits about her, Cecelia began the game. As predicted, it sucked in all of her attention, which helped her forget her last vestiges of embarrassment. The game actually went better than expected – Cecelia held her own against Grey, never falling more than a point or two behind him, but also never getting more than a point ahead of him. Cece was wondering how long they’d be able to last like this, with both of them so close, when the game answered her question for her. It exploded, evidently because both she and Grey had missed one of the pairs that had been laid out in front of them. Cecelia blinked, and then looked up at Grey. “Am I missing an eyebrow?” She asked with a laugh. grey xavier slater (permission from Colin to powerplay the game~)

@cecelia Grey could feel a grin form on his face as Cecelia pointed out that he didn’t seem the type to like chess. That was the trick to it. The quiet, calculating ones were always the most deadly. “And I didn’t take you for the hugging type either, and yet you did earlier,” he chimed, producing his wand from his pocket and placing it on the table as he talked. Exploding Snap was far different from Wizard chess though. This relied on process power and reflexes. If he was going to beat Cecelia, then he would need to be on top of his game. For whatever reason, he had a feeling that she was pretty good at it. Quidditch reflexes and all that stuff. Stretching his back, Grey picked his wand back up and prepared for the onslaught. It was either going to be a blowout by one of them, or a really close match.
And it seemed like today was the day he almost won. Back and forth, that was how it went. He held quite a few leads here and there, but a large enough gap in the score never appeared. Every time it seemed like he was about to put it away, Cecelia would make a few points and tie it back up. If this had been against anyone other than her, it probably would have started to get a little annoying at some point. But it didn’t. He was actually enjoying himself, which was hard to come by sometimes, especially when most of his time and energy was dedicated to running the newspaper. Then the explosion happened, and just like that the game was over. Before he could really react to what had occurred, Cecelia was asking him if she was missing an eyebrow. Looking up at her, his blank stare continued. This was perfect timing to mess with her. “Eyebrows,” Grey stated flatly as best he could without laughing and giving it all away. “Though your eyes really stand out now, so maybe that’s a good thing.”

Grey said that he didn’t take her for the hugging type, and Cecelia shrugged. “I’m not normally.” She said. Hugging wasn’t the best way for her to show affection since she sometimes got freaked out by people touching her, especially if she wasn’t expecting their presence, but she liked it in specific times… like when she had hugged Grey. Though she probably would have hugged any number of people if she had seen them in the halls, Cece told herself. It was just the fact that Grey was the most convenient option at that point in time. After the game, Cecelia was eager to hear whether or not the explosion had actually singed her face as much as it had felt like. Grey was staring at her, which was definitely not a good thing. Unless he was just staring because he was sleep-deprived? Cece was about to cling to that thread of hope as the reason why Grey was looking at her so blankly, but her hopes were quickly dashed when Grey said that she was missing eyebrows – plural. Cecelia made a noise in the back of her throat that sounded like she was choking, and she glared at Grey. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Cecelia said. She would believe it was within her bad luck to have both of her eyebrows seared off by a fun card game, but things had been going alright – or at least not badly – recently! “Nice to know you like my eyes though, Slater.” Cece added, trying to sound blasé or teasing about the whole thing. She thought she sounded more like a schoolgirl thanking their crush for noticing her, but she was going to attribute to the fact that her voice was high-pitched with the nerves of potentially having actually lost her eyebrows. grey xavier slater

@cecelia It worked! It actually worked. Grey continued to keep a serious face as he observed Cecelia start to panic over the fact that her eyebrows were burnt off. They were perfectly fine, all she had to do was reach up and feel them. That was probably the funniest part of it all. She did have a considerable amount of soot on her face though, and he was sure his was the same way. Looking in a mirror right now would probably hide the fact that were eyebrows were indeed still there. He let the panic set in a little more before finally cracking a smile. “I am kidding,” he stated, grinning even more. Sure, a more intense game might burn one off, but usually it was just a face full of sparks at the most. Though he distinctly remembered a rather large game of Exploding Snap resulting in someone flying backwards out of their chair and knocking themselves out. That definitely was not him second year. “Chess might be a little more dangerous, now that I think about it. It breaks people's egos...” he pondered. Flying bits of magical stone from the most brutal of games could poke an eye out if you weren’t paying attention. Nothing a quick visit to the hospital wing couldn’t fix though. As for a pompous pureblood's pedigree in victory, that differed from person to person.
“If that’s a thank you, then you’re welcome, Rousseau.” Grey put on a little extra twist for her last name. If they were playing that game, then it was on his side of the field. He liked to believe that he knew most people by their last names over their first. It was easier to get someone’s attention in that regard. Unless it was a Weasley. There were too many of them. That only added to the fact that he had to memorize all of the ones outside of Gryffindor as well, and sometimes that was a little too much extra effort.
“Game for a round two?” He asked, trying his best to pile up the remaining cards on the table. The explosion had sent a handful in every which way. Even though the room had optioned to take a smaller size this time, they were still scattered about. “Or maybe something a little more tame. One of us might actually lose an eyebrow next time.”

Cecelia kept on staring at Grey, hoping that he was kidding but not entirely sure that he was. Her eyebrows felt like they were normal, but her face was also covered in ash and soot from the explosion, so it felt a little strange as a whole. After a few heart-pounding seconds, Grey said that both of her eyebrows were intact. “Grey!” Cecelia said with a laugh. Even if she was a little miffed, it was all in good humor, and she did have both her eyebrows, so she was in better shape than she had started off in. “You’re a meanie.” She teased, which was the farthest thing from the truth that there could be. Grey wasn’t the sort of person who cared enough about most other people to actually bother being mean. As far as Cece could tell, the only thing he cared about was his family and his newspaper. Grey said that chess might be bad because it could damage people’s egos, and Cece nodded at that one. She couldn’t count on both of her hands the amount of times someone at one of her parent’s parties (or parties she attended) had thrown a fit because she had won a chess game. (She had been instructed not to let the boys beat her, which, at the time, had only made Cecelia want to beat them more, even though she obeyed anyways.) “Just be glad you’re not a pureblood. They get snotty about their games.” And about everything else, too, though Cecelia was sure Grey could add that in on his own. “What do I have to thank you for?” Cece asked with a chuckle. She had thought that Grey calling her by her last name – something that normally made Cecelia antsy due to the fact that her sisters also shared the name – would make her antsy, but it actually didn’t bother her that much. She was sure that he was just kidding, and not meaning to be malicious. Others, she was unsure about, but again, Cecelia had never seen Grey be mean for the sake of being mean. Grey asked if she was up for another game, and Cecelia shrugged. She wasn’t keen on the idea of actually losing an eyebrow, and if that was an option, maybe it was better for her to opt out. “What’s an easy game to play in a few minutes?” She asked. Cecelia wasn’t sure what time it was, but she didn’t want to be too late after curfew and if they got lost in a long, complicated game (like chess), then that was a real possibility. grey xavier slater
