The death of Abigail Shacklebolt was a shocker even for Stephen. The girl had been a bit reckless, headstrong and stubborn but then again so was he. He found her more interesting than half of the trainee aurors and hitwizards anyway; at least she had had the gall to fight back when she disagreed with something. He wondered if anyone of her training class would pick up her mantle, from his observations she’d had friends in the same years as her, and perhaps they’d show more interesting personalities than a wooden board. One could only hope, he supposed.
Slightly exasperated, Stephen came into the office on a clear, cold February morning, his to go cup of tea in his right hand and a sheaf of papers in his left. Since the capture of the Muggle torturer, there had been a bit of a lull between major cases, but now the Head of Magical Law Enforcement, none other than Harry Potter, wanted their resources to be turned to finding Elaine Dupree. The girl was a sleuth, a cleverly sneaky witch, but everyone was found eventually. Stephen knew that the Aurors were out for blood after the death of one of their own, but he was curious if he could solve this mystery of Elaine himself, at least until another case came his way. He took a sip of his tea and began reading some reports when there was a knock on his door. “Enter,” he called shortly, wondering who would be disturbing him so close to the beginning of his work day.

Death went with the job. Claire, despite being only 22-years-old, had experienced the deaths of several of her coworkers. The most recent being Abigail Shacklebolt. The only real surprise was how... dispassionate Claire felt about it. She felt just as cold and calculated as when she'd killed Desirae Roussea, despite having worked with Abigail Shacklebolt on a one on one basis. Theodorus Nott had also been a recent casaulty but she was even less torn up about that. He'd been an arrogant prick who she'd trusted less then she would Elaine Dupree herself.
Today though wasn't about the recent deaths. Today was about a different matter entirely. Today she was going to see Stephen Holmes. She'd known the man by reputation most of her career but not personally until a month ago. Despite his reputation she didn't actually find him nearly as insufferable as almost everyone else. In fact, while they did disagree on some points she actually liked his cold and brutal exterior. Which was why she was willingly walking down to his office, for a.... social call of sorts. Partially business but not the usual sort.
A firm knock on the door, his quick and callous response, and she finally opened the door and slipped into his office. "Mr. Holmes." She greeted softly.

Stephen looked up as he saw who it was, and there was just the faintest trace of the ghost of a smile, which disappeared quickly. “Ah, Miss Slater, do have a seat,” he said, gesturing to the seat in front of his desk. He studied her carefully, analyzing the features of the young womans face, and was surprised to see a clear lack of emotions, even though it had been her partner on the Rousseau killing who had turned up murdered just last week. “My condolences on the recent death of Miss Shacklebolt,” he told her, inclining his head slightly. He was sure Claire maybe felt perhaps a smidge of sympathy deep down, but less for herself and more for the Shacklebolt family, which seemed to be dropping like flies. He knew the twin was currently recovering from the ordeal that left her sister and lover dead in the Riddle House at Saint Mungos, and nobody knew her timetable on returning to work at the Ministry, if ever.
“I expect you’re not here before you just wanted to see my face,” he inquired, raising a brow at Claire Slater. Stephen had never been one for small talk, he felt that it was simply a waste of time and energy when more important things needed to be spoken of. People had called him brusk, harsh, and even an egotistical arsehole on more than one occasion, but Stephen simply loathed the idea of standing around talking to people about their children, or their pets, or other mundane things he simply didn’t care for. He didn’t typically talk much about himself, as his life was basically his job at the Ministry, which was typically consisting of confidential information, or his side job as a detective for unusual cases that appeared in the laps of his comrade at Scotland Yard, which he didn’t feel the need to talk to about anyone as it was not their business. Claire Slater though had shown that she had the capability of becoming a hitwitch, a step up in both paygrade and danger level, and he was sure it was that recommendation of his, plus the recent strike of Elaine’s that brought her here to his office on this day.

Claire was pleasantly surprised to spot just the faintest of smiles from him. Though it didn't last long. She nodded in silent acknowledgment to his offer. Taking the same seat across from him that she had their first meeting she cross one leg over the over and leaned back into the chair just a little. Slightly more relaxed then her first visit. "I didn't know her well." she answered slowly to his words. He wasn't the first to say such a thing, though Claire didn't quite understand why. They'd only been partnered for that one job, to give Abigail some field experience. "It is a tragedy though." she forced herself to add, so she didn't sound too cold, though she wasn't to concerned about her image with Stephen. He could read her like a book.
As always, it was straight to business. Why she was here. Stephen's attitude didn't bother her at all. She hated wasting time as well. "No, that's not why. Though you are more pleasant company then the trainees most of the time." she wasn't joking at all there. Some of the recruits enjoyed goofing off far to much and it irritated her. "First, I wanted to thank you for handling that case." she started to explain, pausing momentarily. She was grateful for him completing it. Growing attached to cases definitely wasn't wise. But she's been so close to a break when it'd been transferred to him. And he hadn't kept her out of the loop either. "Second. I want to know why you made that recommendation." Claire didn't say what recommendation it was. He knew what it was. He'd given a 'somewhat' answer their previous conversation but she didn't find it satisfying. He didn't know her that well. So why? Why did he feel like he knew her well enough in just a few minutes to know she should switch departments?

Stephen noticed Claire’s mannerism had changed since their first encounter. She seemed positively relaxed for someone with her nature. He wondered if that meant she felt comfortable around him; perhaps he needed to change something up in order to put more on the alert. Stephen Holmes didn’t recommend witches and wizards to his program lightly, and if Claire decided on switching he wanted to make sure she’d be ready for anything. “Tragedy,” he repeated, his fingers coming together to form a pyramid. He pressed his index fingers across his lips thoughtfully. He had read the report, being high up on the hitwizard chain and having access to the Elaine files. In his opinion, it was for the best Claire had only done the one assignment with her. Of course, that assignment had been tracking down Desirae Rousseau; he didn’t understand the logic behind the Aurors sending out a rookie on that assignment. Tracking down one of her lackies certainly, but Elaine’s right hand woman? That could have been disastrous. “She led with her heart instead of her head and it got her killed. Her twin was captured and instead of turning to resources made available at the Ministry, she decided to barge in to save her, and hope that Theodorus would choose her in the end,” Stephen stated flatly. It turned out from the looks of it at least Theo had chosen Abby in the end, but now they were both dead and buried; what good did love do you if both of you were dead?
Stephen said nothing as Claire thanked him for handling the case she had come to him with earlier, but merely inclined his head as a way of saying ‘you’re welcome’. He raised an eyebrow curiously though as she asked why he made the recommendation to her switching career paths. “I thought that would be obvious, Ms Slater,” he said, pausing to see if the answer would come to her suddenly. When she didn’t respond, Stephen pressed on. “You are a skilled and abled witch, you show no mercy to your enemies, and understand that sometimes the unthinkable needs to be done. You are quick on your feet and are capable of making snap decisions under pressure, otherwise you would not have won against Desirae Rousseau. Your talents are exactly what the Hitwizard department needs in times like this, and if I am perfectly blunt, are being wasted in the Auror department.” Stephen stopped speaking abruptly; he waited with a touch of impatience to see what Claire would say to this.

Despite not being completely on edge, Claire most definitely hadnt dropped her guard. Stephen wasn't known for being the kindest person at the ministry after all. No one in either of their departments was to be honest. But it was to be expected considering what they did for a living. At the mention of Theodorus Nott Claire actually frowned, her feelings for the dead boy obvious. "She misplaced her trust." was all Claire could say that didn't sound too.... heartless. Personally she didn't fully believe the story of what happened. Theodorus Nott had been a traitorous snake. Who's to say he hadn't led Abby into a trap. The one time she had met him she'd distrusted him. Because he'd made it quite clear he had absolutely no loyalties to anyone. Why the ministry had trusted him was beyond her understanding, and that trust had played a role in her growing dissatisfaction with the Auror program.
Claire just raised an eyebrows as he said it was obvious. She wasn't the sort to jump to conclusions without concrete proof so the look she gave him almost read that she'd rather hear him say it. His explanation just brought her frown back. But it wasn't out of hate this. It was more of... when you received harsh news that you knew you needed abs couldn't deny. While he didn't know her, he read people well and he knew cases she'd worked on in the past. If anything he was an excellent judge of people because he was completely unbiased. And while she'd already been leaning towards this change in direction before... he'd only reassured her of it more. "Some people wouldn't say those are all good traits to possess." she answered slowly. Being as ruthless and merciless as those they hunted... And yet it only made Claire sure of one thing that she often wouldn't admit. She was a hunter, and she needed to decide if she'd give in to those instincts or keep pretending to fit into the political world.
