hello there, my name is minerva mcgonagall but you can call me Professor. i'm 88 so that makes me a graduate of Hogwarts, where I resided in gryffindor house. You could say I'm brave, daring, & chivalrous but I personally think that I am stern, brilliant, and blunt. People say I look a lot like Maggie Smith, but I don't really see it...

overall personality:
Minerva is notorious for being a strict, stern, and harsh woman. Her reputation is one of little tolerance towards opinions she does not agree with, interruptions, and disrespect. She does not let her personal feelings ever affect her judgement in any way, nor does she let her emotions dictate her actions. She has a cold calculation to her, always taking her time to fully weigh all the options before making any decisions. She can, at times, be quite a perfectionist with a refusal to perform anything short of perfection. Her meticulous and methodical tendencies help her excel in whatever she sets her mind to.
Minerva is notorious for her refusal to accept anything she does not agree with and her silver tongue. She is a woman who will never hesitate to speak her mind without any hesitation or any regard to what others may think of her opinion. In fact she is quite quick to criticize and insult. But, for some reason her complete transparency of her thoughts doesn't negatively impact most people's opinion of her. Perhaps it is because she does not hesitate that she makes an incredibly trustworthy person. She does not possess a single deceitful bone in her body.
Although she is a very just and law abiding woman she does not follow blindly. She requires a firm grasp of the purpose of the laws or rules, and the effect it will have on herself and those around her. So, at times this does mean she will act in accordance to what is best for the situation, even if it does put her in conflict with regulations.
While a harsh and sharp tongued woman she is a caring and thoughtful one. She is incredibly loyal to those who have gained her respect and her allegiances will never waver from what she deems to be the true path. Her allies can always count on her constant protection.
Despite her impressive loyalty she is also just and fair. Since she does not let her emotions govern her decisions and actions she will always treat others in the correct and rational manner. This trait was often shown by her interactions with the students when she was Head of Gryffindor. She treated the students of her own house in the exact same fashion as those from others. She would never hesitate to enforce all rule breaking with the exact same severity for every student, despite her personal opinion of the student. In all you could never accuse her of favoritism.
In all her years teaching she had developed a very forgiving and non judgemental attitude. But considering having to deal with Harry Potter and his friends for six years is it really that surprising? As long as the individual has the desire to do better. She also understands that teenagers and children are more likely to act in ways an adult would never and that most outgrow their behavior. So, she rarely lets the actions from your teenage years affect her opinion of you down the road.
Minerva is a fairly private woman. She does not share her personal life and experiences often with others, even those close to her. Her desires, her fears, her history. She prefers to keep all those things solely to herself and a select few she's deemed appropriate to share with.
In all? Minerva McGonagall is a woman that commands both respect and fear from all who know her.

history:
Minerva is the first born and only daughter of a muggle minister and talented witch. From a young age she showed extreme magical promise and prowess, a fact that brought her mother extreme pride but also extreme unease. She spent much of her time alone with her daughter, behind closed doors, struggling to face the eventual necessity to tell her husband of the secrecy. One she’d kept for quite some time. You see, she never told her husband of her being a witch. But with their daughter growing and showing more and more sign of magic, she knew she could not keep it a secret. When he was finally told it did not change his feelings for his family but did cause a rift of sorts. Being a minister his life was based solely on his honest, so you could imagine how such a serious secret could cause quite a stir. Nonetheless, despite the dilemma the family had a good and happy life. Minerva was an extremely bright girl and when her brothers were born played a role in helping them hide any magical occurrences from her father and the other muggles in the village. At the age of eleven, like all magical children, she received her Hogwarts acceptance letter and that September headed to school.
Minerva's schooling career is one of legend and it started on her first night. She was a hatstall, an extremely rare occurrence when the sorting hat, unable to decide where you place you, spent more than five minutes debating. Few of these have ever occurred in history, and Minerve was one of them. It's Dilemma was between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. At almost 6 minutes the hat finally made it's decision and to Gryffindor she went. During her seven years Minerva became known as top in her class and achieved some of the hardest accomplishments for a student; the top marks on all her owls and newts, prefect, head girl, registered animagus(under the tutelage of Professor Dumbledore) and winner of Transfiguration Today's most promising newcomer award. While she'd done extremely well in all her classes she was unusually proficient and talented in transfiguration. She also played Quidditch for the Gryffindor team. Due to several injuries though she was forced to 'retire' from the sport but her love of it endures even to this day. Basically by the age of 18 she had acquired an extraordinary list of accomplishments that set her apart from her peers.
After graduation she fell in love with a muggle boy from her home village over the course of the summer, and he asked her to marry him. Initially she agreed to his marriage proposal but later rejected his offer as she realized how difficult such a relationship would be and how marrying him, and telling him about her being a witch would break the statute of secrecy. It would be an end to all her ambitions, nor did she want the same sort of marriage her parents had (one with secrets and lies). Heart broken, she left for London to take a position at the Ministry in the department of magical law enforcement. She did well there but was never truly happy. After only a few short years she was offered a prestigious promotion and promptly rejected it, instead writing to Hogwarts to ask if they had any teaching positions available. Only hours later she received a response and began her teaching career under Professor Dumbledore. While such occurrences are unheard of nowadays she was a Hogwarts Professor at the young age of only twenty years old.
Teaching was truly her calling in life. While a strict teacher she was excellent at her job and helps many fantastic witches and wizards on their journey to greatness by assisting their education. During her years she became extremely close to her former teacher and now college, Albus Dumbledore, and the pair confided some of their deepest and most personal feelings and experiences with each other. She also married her former boss from the ministry, Elphinstone Urquart after rejecting him multiple times over several years. He was quite persistent though and after receiving news of her first love (the muggle boy)'s death though she finally agreed. Their marriage was short lived, only three years, but very good and happy. They owned a cottage in Hogsmeade and each day Minerva would walk from the village to the school. After an accident with a venomous tentacula Elphinstone passed away and Minerva returned to living at the school full time.
Over the course of her many years she has seen and experienced many things. From the shenanigans of James Potter and his gang, to Harry Potter's horrifically eventful six years of attracting trouble like a magnet. One of her deepest heartbreaks was the death of her oldest and closest friend, Albus Dumbledore. After his passing she took on his mantle of head of Hogwarts (after Snape's demise of course), and ruled the school in a way that she hoped would continue Dumbledore's legacy. She remained at the school for many years.
During her years as Headmistress Minerva was awarded the Order of Merlin, First class by the Minister of the time (Minister Shacklebolt) and was even featured on a Chocolate frog, a great honor but one she never thought she'd be worthy of.
Eventually retirement beckoned and she stepped down from her position and bought a little cottage in the Scottish countryside. Her years in retirement were spent editing and revising Transfiguration textbooks, writing a few of her own. Unfortunately peace could not remain. Rumors of what was happening at Hogwarts reached her ears. While worried she knew the school was in good hands. While a sorry lump of a boy, Neville Longbottom had blossomed into a hard working wizard. While he lacked natural ability and cleverness he made up for it by sheer determination and strength of will. Until... he fell ill.
After eight years of retirement Minerva McGonagall has finally decided to step out of this peaceful life and return to protect the most important thing to her; Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
