Finally, classes were out! Today was hard. And Penelope was done with school. Well to be honest, she was done with school the moment the contents of her cauldron blew up in potions class. But now was her time. She had gone back to her dorm and grabbed her treasured violin case. And without changing she rushed back out and took the steps by twos and ran up to the fifth floor. She hurried into the music room. Yes, she was alone. She closed the door quietly and took a deep breath. She placed her case on the floor pulling out her violin she handled it like her prized possession. She then pulled out some crumpled up sheet music and placed it on one of the stands. Her side facing the door she began to play to the music. Slowly at first, then as her fingers began to warm up, and remember the feel of the strings on her callused fingers, the music began to speed up. After playing a few stanzas to warm up, she turned began again. This time choosing to go mostly off of memory and feeling. Closing her eyes gently as the music flowed from her stings as her bow glided over them.
The piece was well known from a muggle composer, she had played it many times. Her posture perfect, and her eyes, when opened, focussed on the the music in front of her. She almost didn’t notice the door opening. But out of the corner of her eye, Penelope saw something moving by the door, it startled her, and a very sour and crude note came out of her violin, she quickly looked over at the door, startled that someone was coming in.

Brandon walked around the school, making his way to the Room of Requirement. In all honesty, it was where he spent most of his time. While in that room, he could use any instrument he wanted to play absolutely anything and he was in the mood to play, as always. However, as he approached the room, he heard the sound of somebody already playing the violin. Jamie? No, he didn't think she'd become that proficient in such a short time. He'd only just started teaching her the other day. So this would be somebody else. The music sounded wonderful. As he approached the door, Brandon paused for a moment outside, leaning against the wall and closing his eyes as he listened. As much as he loved playing music, sometimes it was just fun to be the one listening. It was definitely one way that he got ideas for his original songs. After a bit, he pushed himself off the wall and moved to the door, softly pushing it so the crack widened and he would be able to enter, hopefully without making too much noise. He cringed slightly when she hit the wrong note. Obviously he hadn't been as quiet as he'd meant to be. "Sorry," he muttered. "That sounds beautiful." Hopefully whoever it was wouldn't mind his interruption, since he obviously liked their playing. penelope raisa bainbridge (OOC: I haven't plotted with you, but Brandon used to be in Hufflepuff before he went to Durmstrang, so I'm assuming they would have known one another before that, especially since she likes music. Do you want them to be friends? )

Penelope looked at the door, terrified of who would be there, and who would have witnessed such a horrendous note. She prayed that it wasn’t her sister. A sigh of relief came to her when she saw a boy there. Wait, he looked familiar. ”That’s alright, it was my fault.” She quickly looked at her bow, it was alright. She gently placed her violin and bow down and looked back up to the door. She smiled as it finally clicked, she recognized him. ”Wait, Brandon?” She recognized that it was her friend that moved to Durmstrang. She hadn’t seen him for quite a while, and didn’t realize that he had come with his school. But that could have been her fault. She had been focusing on drawing and spending time with some of her friends in her house. She hadn’t interacted much with the Durmstrang or Bobaton students.
@brandon
(OOC: I think that’s a great idea! Especially because she would have spent as often as she could practicing, that would be in the music classroom and in the dorm. Penelope needs more friends anyway)

Brandon heard her familiar voice, saying it was her fault and he looked at her more carefully. He recognized her right when she said his name. "Penelope! I can't believe I haven't seen you all year!" He enthused, moving quickly across the room so he could give her a hug. She probably hadn't realized that he came back as one of the exchange students, but he was really glad to see her again. She was another music enthusiast, like himself, and he always enjoyed spending time with her. "You mind if I join you in here? I was coming to practice and then I heard your amazing song. Let's have some fun," he encouraged with a nod. He loved playing with others and he was pretty sure Penelope would be good with it. Then maybe they could talk later or something. penelope raisa bainbridge

Penelope smiled as he said her name. Good, he recognized her too. He then mentioned playing together, and her smile widened. She picked up her violin again. ”No problem. Let’s do it.” She placed her bow, and checked the tune of the string she played weird. Just to make sure that it was still in tune, and that it wouldn’t make that sound again. ”Want to play anything specific? Or just make it up as we go?” She wasn’t good at making up songs, but she knew how to follow along and compliment tunes. Sometimes it didn’t sound good, but that was how you learned. She then played a quick scale on her violin and laughed a little.

She was smiling and picking up her violin and Brandon moved over to a cello on the other side of the room. Oh, he loved the Room of Requirement. It made playing different instruments a whole lot easier. "How about we can start with the song you were playing. I can just follow along," he suggested. It sounded really good when she was playing it a few minutes earlier and he wouldn't mind hearing the end of the song either. Then he smiled, "And if you want to, we can try some composing in a bit." Brandon was good with whatever. When he was playing he was happy and playing with friends and people he trusted only made it more fun. penelope raisa bainbridge

Penelope watched Brandon moved to a cello that was a little bit away from where she was standing. She nodded when he mentioned starting with the song that she was playing. She knew that Brandon was good at following along, and making things up, and making them sound amazing. That was a talent that she hopped to one day have. Plus, she knew this song fairly well, and felt comfortable playing around with it, should the inspiration come. ”That’s a great idea. How about I start at the beginning.” She didn’t know how much he had heard. He could have been lurking a decent amount of time before coming in. But she didn’t mind either way. She just figured that the the beginning was a good place to start. ”We can try, but I’ll be honest, I’m not very good at it. But I’d love to play around with it.” She looked down at her sheet music then back up at Brandon. She knew the music well enough. ”If you want to start to change things, I’ll start to follow you. Deal?”

Brandon liked playing with other people that loved music as much as he did. It made things so much easier and he was glad to have Penelope here right now. He smiled at her. "Starting at the beginning sounds great! You go ahead and start and I will follow you." He picked up the bow and was ready to begin when she was. This was one of his favorite games to play, just messing around with music. He nodded, "I'll follow along with you at least for the beginning, but that definitely sounds good to me," he told her with a small laugh. He had a feeling this was going to be fun. penelope raisa bainbridge

All Penelope wanted to do after her classes today was play the violin. How could she ever imagine that someone would come by and play with her. While that was hard to believe, it was even harder to believe that it would be her friend Brandon. She was excited to be able to play with him. She smiled back at Brandon when he said it was a good idea to start at the beginning. That was what she was thinking. It would also give him some time to get the feel of the piece. And the fact that he had heard part of the first bit anyway. When she saw that he was ready to play, Penelope lifted the violin up, placing her chin on the rest, she nodded as he agreed to follow until he felt like changing anything. Penelope placed her bow on the violin strings and instantly began to play. She started slowly at first, but not nearly as slow and she had started earlier. As she played a few notes, she slowly began to speed up.

Penelope started playing the violin and Brandon followed along. She was playing a little faster than she had earlier but that was great with Brandon. He loved playing with other people. The opportunity didn't normally arise where he got to play with a friend, but he was excited that it did today. He sped up as she did, adding little trills and fancy things to the melody. He couldn't stop the grin from covering his face. "I'm going to play around," he warned her, still playing. "You can stay with the melody or join me." This was so much fun! As he messed around with the rhythm and the harmonies, Brandon's head bobbed along with the music. This was great. After a while the song ended and he turned to look at her. "That was fabulous, Penelope," he told her with a grin. Hopefully she felt the same. penelope raisa bainbridge

Penelope couldn’t help but smile when she heard Brandon begin to follow her. As she quickened the pace, she began to sway to the music. He began to add fancy additions and trills to the music, and as he did, Penelope moved away from her music. She nodded as he told her that he was going to mess around some. As he did, she moved completely away from her music and began to ad trill, and elongating sections to emphasize what he was doing. Some of the things she did, didn’t seem to work out they way she wanted them to, but others sounded amazing. Penelope’s smile only grew as the music flowed from the two instruments. This was what she loved. Once music was involved, there was no need for words, and everyone around became equal. Why couldn’t it feel like this all the time. Why couldn’t people understand that it didn’t matter where you came from, it mattered who you were and what you did. After the song ended, Penelope looked at Brandon with a huge smile on her face. ”I think we make a great team!”

Penelope looked just as delighted as Brandon felt. What just happened was music in its purest form, and he was ecstatic. He loved his music and playing on his own, but there was a rare joy that came from playing with someone who cared about the music and felt it the same way you did. it was the best part, sharing music with those who understood it. "We do make a great team," he agreed. "Why haven't we been doing this all year?" He demanded, a teasing grin covering his face. "You're really good with your violin. I mean, I wasn't expecting you to leave the music like that, but you did great." He hoped she didn't think he was exaggerating, but Brandon wanted to make sure Penelope knew that she was good. Musicians needed praise. It helped them feel comfortable with what they were doing so they could stretch their limits further. At least, that was Brandon's thought about it. penelope raisa bainbridge

Playing like this, with someone talented, who also loves music was an experience that Penelope wished that she had more often. The emotion and feeling that comes out of the music is simply exhilarating. She thought about her brother's letter when he suggested her becoming a musician. After playing like this, she began to think that it would be the best career choice for her, seeing as she wasn’t all to good, or motivated in classes. ”We do make a great team.” She smiled at Brandon. The music that they made together was something that couldn’t be duplicated. ”Well, I hadn’t seen you until now. If we had bumped into each other before, I’m sure that we would have already started doing this." She met the teasing grin that he sent her way with a mischievous grin herself. ”Thanks, I just thought I would go with it. But I’m usually not good at it.” After that compliment, she couldn’t stop smiling. Maybe she could experiment a little move. Maybe she could start with mashing up songs she already knows with musical similarities. ”But I’m no where as good as you are.”

He nodded when she agreed about them being a good team and then moaned. "You're right! We could have been doing this all year." That was a sad thought. Brandon loved his music and absolutely loved discovering more music with other people. He hated the idea of losing out on that because he hadn't noticed her ... or she hadn't noticed him. Whatever. It was still a shame. "I guess that means we're just going to have to take advantage of the rest of the year and have fun with our music," he added with a little wink. He was sure Penelope would be game for that. She seemed excited with what they'd just done, after all. He rolled his eyes when she said that she normally wasn't good at just playing around. "After what you just did, I have a hard time believing that," he complimented. Then he shook his head, "You are a few years younger than me. You'll probably be better than I am when you reach my age." She had talent, that was for sure. And she played one instrument- as far as he knew- which would probably help her proficiency grow faster. While he could play anything, she could play one thing very well. penelope raisa bainbridge

The fact that they could have been doing this all year was a great idea, but tragic that they only waited until now to get together. ”But who’s to stop us from getting together again before you go back?” Penelope loved to play violin, especially with other people, but that didn’t happen much outside of the club. ”Guess we will have to make the best of it.” She gave a little giggle and a blush at Brandon as he winked. Her smile widened when she he told her that he didn’t believe that she wasn’t good at improvising music. She would like to practice more. She enjoyed hearing that. ”I’m not sure about that.” She smiled at him again. She needed to hear the compliment. While it was fun to just play, she felt like every artist needed encouragement. Especially from fellow artists.
