Imogen didn't really feel like going to a carnival, but that was exactly the reason that she went. The memories of her visit with Ophelia in the hospital had been knocking around in her head, and while she didn't want to ignore them, Imogen didn't want to let them consume her, either. The carnival was a convenient distraction, and Imogen was currently winding through the maze of people and booths to try to find something interesting. She briefly considered playing some games, but then thought the better of it. She was standing at the edge of a crowd, watching a man eat fire, when someone jostled at her elbow and, not a fraction of a second later, something dropped on her foot. Imogen bent down to see that what had been dropped was a unicorn plush toy, probably the prize for one of the many games. The professor assumed that the person who had jostled her had been the one to drop it, and immediately began scanning the area behind her to see if anyone appeared to be heading away from the crowd. She spotted a ponytail bobbing through the crowd, and began to walk quickly after it. "Excuse me!" She called, hoping that the person would stop so she could return what they had lost.

Yadi was at the carnival with his daughter Lucia having a great time. He was always excited when he got to spend time with his daughter and with permission from Beauxbatons, he'd been able to go get her for the weekend to come to the carnival. And he was certain they were going to spend the entire weekend at the carnival if the both of them had their way. With all of the rides that were there they would have a wonderful time because both he and Lucia both enjoyed amusement parks. When they'd entered the carnival they'd been given a bunch of free tokens and he'd spent a lot of time following his daughter around from booth to booth, watching her decide what she wanted to do. They'd already dunked a mermaid or two, guessed how many beans were in a small jar in a corner booth and had ridden one or two of the rides. She began to get hungry so he'd taken her to grab some popcorn to tide her over until she wanted to get dinner. Luckily enough there was no fee to get in and they could leave freely to go grab actually food. He'd been passing the bag of food back and forth between the two of them as they passed a big crowd before he heard her yell out in excitement and take off again. With the bag of popcorn unfortunately. Once again his heart jumped in a bit of fear as he ran after her. She ran up to a booth that had a bunch of prizes that she eyes covetously. "Lucia honey, please stop running off like that. I don't want you to get lost in the crowd," he advised in a fatherly tone. It was then that he heard a voice behind him shouting out. He turned around to see a women approaching with a stuffed unicorn under her arm. Was that theirs? Was she calling for them? He blinked waiting to see if she would pass them by or not.

The good thing about being a professor was that Imogen had become much more adept at navigating crowds. There were some areas in Hogwarts that always seemed to be busy, and the corridor near her room was one of them, thanks to the fact that it was one of the throughways to most of the other classrooms in the school. Im had needed to learn how to navigate the crowd to make it to her own class in time, but also to be able to pursue rulebreakers who thought that she was going to let them get away with things just because they ran away. It was especially helpful that the man he was pursuing had a ponytail, because there weren’t many others his height with the same hairstyle. Eventually he stopped, and turned to face her when she called out. Did he not realize that he had dropped something? Or had she been wrong to assume that just because he had bumped into her, he had also lost the stuffed animal? He didn’t really look like the sort, but Imogen was hardly one to judge. She finally managed to make it so that she was within comfortable conversation distance of the man, and saw the probable culprit of the unicorn abandonment: the young girl beside him. “Is this yours?” Imogen asked, holding up the unicorn and choosing to direct her question to the man instead of the girl beside him. She knew from experience that children would easily lie about whether or not something belonged to them, depending on whether or not they wanted it to belong to them. It was true for both Dungbombs and fancy jewelry – the truth wasn’t as important as their desires, especially when they were young.

He waited and watched as the woman with the unicorn plush walked up to him. So she had been calling out for him. She gestured to the unicorn, asking if it was his. He was certain she meant if it was Lucia's or not because she had noticed the girl before she'd asked him. He knew they'd won a few prizes from a few games but he couldn't quite remember what the prizes had looked like since he'd given them all to Lucia. He turned to Lucia, who was still eyeing the prizes of the booth in front of them at the point, and placed a hand on top of her head to get her attention. "Was this one of the ones we'd gotten? Did you drop one?" he asked just as she turned around to eye the toy. It was a second between her eyeing the toy and shaking her head before she turned back around and looked at the other ones. He gave a quick shrug of his shoulders. "She says no though I can't be certain myself. If she doesn't want it, someone else might. Thank you though Ms..." he left the end of his words hang in the air, waiting for her to fill in her name. As he waited he gave her a once over, curious to know if she was a fan or not. Luckily enough, there hadn't been many fans who had approached him while he had been here. That might be because the last time he'd been approached by someone while he was spending time with his daughter, he'd been an arse to them just before apologizing to Lucia that she'd had to see him that way. It had been in the paper too but he hadn't cared because it'd kept the fans away since.

Imogen watched as the man conversed with the girl next to him; she was fairly certain that she was his daughter, or maybe a niece, otherwise their closeness would have been strange. Apparently, the child had gotten more than one toy, which made Imogen pause a little. She wondered how good the man was at playing these games (or how good his daughter was) to be able to get more than one toy from the prize booths. The prices were exorbitantly expensive ticket-wise, especially considering most of the games didn’t seem to give out many tickets at all. Then again, it was possible that the girl was a daddy’s girl, and he was one of the parents who would bend over backwards for his child. Those kinds of parents repulsed Imogen; they needed backbones. (She pushed away the thoughts of Ophelia’s lost child, and how she would have bent over for her godchild, if she had gotten the chance.) After his conversation with his daughter, the man turned back to her, only to say at that the toy unicorn didn’t actually belong to his daughter. He said that she was free to give it to someone else, even if the toy had been hers in the first place, and Imogen nodded, though she didn’t have a clue who else would except such a thing for a stranger. When the man asked her name, Imogen responded cautiously. “Zhu. Professor Zhu, actually.” It had been a long time since anyone had called her Ms. Zhu. It had been since before Hogwarts, since everyone just called her by the title. “Who would you be?” She asked politely. Now that she was looking at him, Imogen felt a niggling sense of familiarity, like she had seen the face before, but she didn’t have the faintest idea why.

Ms. Zhu, or rather, Professor Zhu, huh? She looked pretty young to be a Professor. Hogwarts was nearby here so he wondered if she was a professor there. That would be surprising, he didn't know Hogwarts employed Professors under the age of 40 and there was no way he would believe that she was near that age. Then again, it had been a while since he'd stepped foot in Hogwarts. When it came to recruiting players, he usually sent one of his younger players to meet any new potential because he was told that was a little bit more comfortable for them anyway so he hadn't been too the school in quite a while.Their rules may have changed a bit for all he knew. He went to thank her for her concern, thinking that would be the end of it so he could get back to watching over his daughter, when she asked him who he was. He was silent for a second too long after she asked. She really didn't know who he was? He was trying to decide if that annoyed him or if it was a relief that she wasn't a fan. She must not have been a quidditch fan. Either that or he had a long ways to go before he reached stardom. Now that was frustrating; he'd been playing for a quite a while now. "Yadiel Figueroa. Falmouth Falcons captain, not that that detail is particularly important today," he said looking over at his daughter once again to make sure she hadn't ran off again. He had been trying to decide if he wanted to add the captain part but decided to do so to see if she would recognize him then.

Captain of the Falmouth Falcons? Imogen failed to see why that would ring a bell for her, though she did read the Daily Prophet, so if he or his team was mentioned with any sort of regularity she would be able to recognize the face, even without knowing why. Imogen smiled politely at him when he added that his position as the captain of a Quidditch team didn’t matter that day. “Imogen.” The professor said, realizing that while she had corrected the man’s assumption that she was a mere Ms., she hadn’t bothered to give him her full name. “I’m afraid that the position of professor never quite goes away.” Imogen said, nodding down to the toy in her hands. She had always cared about misplaced items, of course, but after seeing how upset some of her first years could get when they lost their favorite quill or their class notes or something of the sort. She wasn’t allowed to tell the students off for running through the carnival at a dangerous pace, but Imogen was keeping her eye out for children, especially the young ones, that looked as if they had lost their way. Luckily she hadn’t seen anyone of the sort so far. “How old is she?” Imogen asked, nodding to Yadiel’s daughter. She didn’t look Hogwarts age, obviously, but Imogen wasn’t much good at ascertaining how old children were, thanks to her general aversion to anyone under the age of ten – and especially her aversion towards babies.

Her polite smile didn't equal recognition and Yadi wanted to scoff. She must not have been much of a quidditch fan then. Even now just standing there talking to her he saw people eyeing the two of them, especially him in recognition but they knew better than to approach him when Lucia was around. Her failure to recognize him didn't mean much in reality but it still made him feel as if he had a ways to go before he reached stardom. Then again, maybe it was for the best that she didn't recognize him. He nodded when she gave her first name, her name not ringing any bells for him either. Her comment made him raise an eyebrow; he wanted to doubt it. He couldn't imagine her friends calling her professor and he didn't want to stick with the moniker either considering she wasn't his professor nor his daughter's. "Would you prefer I refer to you as professor or is Ms. alright with you?" Maybe being called professor so often she'd gotten used to it so she preferred it but it would feel odd to him. She asked about Lucia and before he could even answer the young girl turned around and answered. "I'm twelve but I turn thirteen next month." Amusement lit up his face immediately because she kept reminding him of her upcoming birthday, like he needed it. She was excited about what she was going to get. Talking about her birthday could grab her attention from anything, apparently.

Imogen realized she had dug herself a bit of a hole with all of the comments about how being a professor never went away, and she bit her lip as she pondered Yadiel’s question. The simplest answer, and the one that she ended up going with, was not to use her surname at all. “Just Imogen is fine.” She said, her voice sounding slightly stilted despite her best efforts to appear relaxed. Im couldn’t remember the last time she had told anyone to call her just Imogen… at least she hadn’t insisted on being called Im. That would have made things even more awkward. The girl answered the professor’s question about her age, and Imogen had to swallow back a choking noise at the announcement. Apparently Imogen was even worse at ascertaining ages than she had thought, because instead of being under ten, the girl was almost a teenager. Imogen taught other children that age! She ought to know what they looked like! Maybe the girl was young-looking for her age. Yes, that was going to be Im’s excuse for not knowing. “Thirteen is one of the best years.” Imogen said with a smile, even though she was lying through her teeth. All of her third years seemed to be miserable. Teenage drama was even worse when the children weren’t yet old enough to know about good conflict resolution skills. “Not so much for parents, though.” Im commented, glancing back at Yadiel. Nope, the teenage years were miserable for parents and professors both.

He noted that she sounded a bit off when she told him that he could refer to her as "Just Imogen" but he ignored it. She had offered her name so he would call her as she requested. "Imogen it is then." He still questioned if the reason she sounded so off was because she had rather him call her professor but there was no point in dwelling on it. He was so used to addressing women as Ms. though that it made it only slightly difficult to drop it off of her first name. When Lucia answered her question, he became distracted by the look of surprise on her face and he had to hold in his own snicker of amusement. He wasn't quite sure where her surprise had come from; maybe the woman had incorrectly guessed her age? Had she over guessed? Under? Yadi wasn't sure but he cleared his throat straightened his face, looking from Lucia back to Imogen. Amusement filled his eyes again when she mentioned thirteen being a good year because her smile wasn't quite honest. Lucia chose that moment to grin up at him in response to Imogen's words, excitement lighting up her eyes. She'd fully be considered a teenager at that time and he was certain she would demand to do more teenager-esque things. And then there was puberty and love and... so much. Imogen had definitely misspoke about thirteen being one of the best years. She then clarified that it wasn't so great for parents and he did snort then. "Between her mother and I, I don't think it'll be too much trouble. She has a good head on her shoulders," he smiled back at Lucia only to see that she had turned back to the booth they were standing near. He looked back at Imogen and shook his head.

Im nodded when Yadiel said that Imogen it would be. He didn’t seem too sure about the whole thing, but that was probably because he had picked up on her own uncertainty. Goodness, was this conversation doomed to failure? Imogen had thought that she had gotten better at communication since becoming a professor at Hogwarts, but this conversation was only going to show that she still had a long way to go. She supposed it was good to have an obvious avenue for self-improvement, but goodness, self-improvement was exhausting! And becoming better with people would mean talking to more people, and… Imogen took a deep breath to keep herself from thinking too much about it. That never ended up well.
“They all have a good head on their shoulders until hormones kick in.” Imogen advised. Even the most well-mannered, logical people had troubles when their emotions were being controlled by something outside of their control, which was an equal mix amusing and terrifying. Some of the children seemed just as terrified of their own emotions as they were of the attacks on the school, as crazy as it sounded. Imogen wasn’t going to harp on that, though. She could talk all she wanted about how growing up did strange things to teenagers, but no one would believe her until they witnessed it themselves.

Yadi knew that Imogen had meant her words to be serious but he began to chuckle anyway. Her tone made the words even more humorous. "Well she has a good head and good parents who can help guide her when she needs help or has questions," he spoke a little bit loudly, wondering if the kid was paying attention to anything that he was saying and got his answer when she groaned loudly. Both he and her mother had had multiple conversations with her about puberty and becoming a teenager and he was certain she was sick of them. He would have been too if his parents had done that same to him at that age. "Plus, I did pretty okay when I was younger. No moodiness or rebelliousness towards my parents," he snickered. Then again he was spoiled and he got everything he wanted from his parents anyway. He wasn't entirely bratty, even then, but he still wanted to keep Lucia from becoming that way, considering he had more money than he could ever spend on his own. "But I'm sure you know better than I do."

Imogen just nodded when Yadiel said that his daughter had a good head and good parents to guide her. That was what every parent thought, but Im could think of quite a few cases where even children that everything going for them went down the wrong path, even after being a professor for less than a year. Good parents and a good head were only of any use when someone actually chose to use them, and a sad amount of students decided to ignore their upbringing and their logic in order to do something else. She didn’t dare say that at the risk of seeming rude or ornery, but she couldn’t resist when Yadiel claimed that he had never been moody or rebellious towards his parents. “You say that… but your parents might think differently.” Imogen said with a smile. She knew that her students had the opinion that they were behaving like perfectly rational human beings even when they were flying off the handle. It was only hindsight that showed them the error of their ways, and sometimes even then they maintained that someone else was at fault, and they had been justified in whatever emotion they were feeling. Yadiel said that she might know better than him, and Im’s head bobbed in a nod. “I think a year of teaching gives some perspective on parenting.” Maybe she didn’t know how to be a parent yet, but Im thought she’d definitely do better in an attempt now than she would have a year ago.

Yadi watched as Imogen nodded her head at his words. She was being rather stubborn about this wasn't she? He wondered what had happened to her, or rather, how long she had been teaching and what had happened to her over those years for her to think so ill of children. That was the vibe he was getting from her, that she didn't particularly think very highly of children. He managed to hold his amusement in this time at her comments about his parents possibly having a different perspective on if he had been troublesome as a child or not. "I'm certain they don't. We've had this conversation plenty of times. I've also had 20 years to ask them about it," his comments came out matter of fact and he was rather curious to see how she would react to them now. That was about how long it had been since he'd been out of school. His parents had always doted on him, as far as he knew. Still did it to this day actually to any friends they had. To the point that it had gotten embarrassing, really. He'd been too worried about disappointing them and himself to go through a rebellious teen phase. Plus he'd known his paternal grandfather wouldn't hesitate to get him in line had he ever stepped out of it. And his grandfather could be a scary man when he wanted to be, age to the wind. His earlier inquiry on how long she had been teaching was answered then. "Yes, a year is plenty of time to assess parenting. Even with the multiple styles of parenting people pick up," his words came out every bit as sarcastic as he'd meant them to. For someone who was so set in her ideals about parenting and children, she surely hadn't been doing so for as long as he'd thought. "Do you have children of your own Imogen?" he asked curiously, though he checked behind him once again just to make sure Lucia hadn't run off just yet.

Imogen just shrugged when Yadiel said that his parents definitely didn’t think that he was a troubling child. Once again, she had to disagree with him. Even if they did think he was troublesome, it wasn’t like they were going to tell him, even if he asked. That sort of thing could put a blemish on the relationship that could never be replaced. Learning that your parents had once found you hard to deal with, or exasperating, or even somewhat annoying, was sure to shatter the heart of any child, no matter when that revelation came about. Imogen wasn’t going to say as much, because then Yadiel would think that she was just projecting her own emotional baggage onto him (even if her relationship with her parents was neutral, at the worst). Yadiel didn’t seem all too impressed with her year of experience, his voice dripping with sarcasm. That was fine by Imogen. If he wanted to gripe about her lack of experience, then he could do just that – her point that every child could be a little snotty or misbehave occasionally wasn’t going to change just because one Quidditch player thought that he couldn’t have possibly done anything in his youth. The question about having children of her own caused Imogen to visibly wince, and she suddenly became very interested in the ground at her feet. Any other time, she would have been happy to announce that she did not, in fact, have any children of her own, but the loss of Ophelia’s child was still so fresh in her mind and her heart. Imogen swallowed. “None of my own. My goddaughter…” She struggled to spit out the world ‘died’. “Is gone now.” She decided instead. Imogen continued to focus on the ground, wishing that she could just disappear.
