Jamie listened intently when Rosie explained about the other schools, saying there were at least three more – one in France, one in northern Europe, and one in America. Jamie wondered if they were ever going to get to learn about those other schools, or if they were just expected to know that sort of stuff. She was glad that she had sat next to someone who knew about the wizarding world while on the train… Figuring this sort of stuff out when she was already at Hogwarts would make her feel weird. “Yeah, I don’t think I’d want to be that far away from home…” Jamie said, trailing off. Even this train ride made her feel like she was going impossibly far away, though part of that had to do with the fact that she knew her mum wouldn’t even be able to see the school – that was something the man who had explained Hogwarts to her had said. Muggles couldn’t see the school. Jamie frowned a little at the thought.
Jamie’s frown deepened when she heard Juliet’s reaction to her question about vampires and werewolves, automatically assuming they were dangerous. Her heart had settled somewhere near her toes as she waited for Rosie to tell stories about vicious werewolves who tore children apart, and gave everyone reason to fear them. To fear Jamie. Surprisingly enough, Rosie didn’t do anything of the sort, instead talking about her mother’s teacher who had been a werewolf. That gave Jamie a little bit of hope – even if he had been forced to resign, the teacher sounded like a nice man, and a good example. She was going to have to figure out more about him… without seeming too interested. “What about vampires?” Jamie prompted, deciding that her best bet in getting more information about werewolves would be to wait and ask questions a little later.

It was hard for Juliet to believe that so many schools existed, although she agreed with Jamie about not wanting to travel so far for school. "I wouldn't either," she said. "I wonder if they learn any different stuff at the other schools, though?" To be fair, she did not even know what she was going to learn about at Hogwarts, but she was able to make an educated guess based on the topics of her school books.
When Rosie told the other two about a teacher who was forced to resign because he was a werewolf, Juliet felt sympathetic for whoever that teacher was and began to think she might have judged werewolves too quickly. After all, they were just ordinary people when they weren't wolves, right? But she wasn't sure, so she made no comment on it.
What really did shock Juliet was the mention of a war and a Battle of Hogwarts. That seemed like something important, but her father had never mentioned anything of the sort to her, perhaps because he did not want his daughter to be scared of going to Hogwarts. "There was a war? Who was it between?" she questioned, half of her not wanting to know the answer.rose harriet granger-weasley @jamie

Rosie shrugged when Juliet asked if they learned anything differently at the other schools, the 11 year old honestly had no idea. She wasn't much of a reader so she hadn't done any reading or research before getting on the train, she only knew the stories that her mother told her from her own time at Hogwarts and she knew the basic history that every child who grew up with at least one wizard parent was bound to know. She always knew she was going to Hogwarts, however, it wasn't really a question, she didn't research any of the other schools because they weren't as important to her, her mom had gone to Hogwarts and so would she.
Honestly, Rosie didn't really know anything about vampires either. "All I know is that Honeydukes, the sweets shop in the village by Hogwarts has lollipops that are blood flavored and marketed towards vampires, I think." she shrugged again. Her mother had never told her any stories or lore about vampires, however, she had seen the lollipops many times whenever her parents took her to the village. "Speaking of..." Rosie pulled her back pack onto her lap and then pulled out a bag of licorice wands. "Want one?" she offered to the two girls after taking one for herself. Rosie was obsessed with sugar. "Oh, these aren't those blood things, these are just wands made of licorice." she explained, realizing that since both of the girls had so many questions they may not have tried wizard candies before.
Juliet asked about the war that Rosie had mentioned and she remembered again that she was the only one with wizard upbringing. She didn't much like talking about the war because it was sad and difficult, especially for young children to talk about, "There was an evil man who didn't like muggle borns and didn't think they should be able to go to Hogwarts and he had a large following of people who agreed and it created a big war which ended at the Battle of Hogwarts when Harry Potter killed him." Rosie gave the shortened version, every child of wizard decent knew about the life of Harry Potter and his friends and their battles with Voldemort and the death eaters. "It got so bad that the students fought too, including my mum." she explained. "A lot of people died. But the good side won and now everything is peaceful again."

Jamie just shrugged when Juliet asked if they learned different things at different schools. She was going to go to Hogwarts no matter what the other schools taught. It was already far enough away from her mum as it was, but going even further… Jamie shuddered at the idea. Jamie was glad that Rosie didn’t say anything that would make her regret that declaration, since the other girl didn’t seem to know much about the other schools. Jamie didn’t know about schools other than her primary school, either, so she didn’t blame Rosie for that.
The other girl didn’t seem to know much about vampires, either, which again, Jamie didn’t blame her for. It didn’t seem like the kind of thing that people talked about much. Rosie offered both of them a licorice, though not before clarifying that they weren’t the blood sweets that she had mentioned about vampires earlier. That was enough to break whatever awkwardness Jamie was feeling about the conversation about supernatural creatures. “There’s licorice in the Muggle world too, don’t worry.” Jamie said with a laugh. She understood that she and Juliet were asking a lot of questions that probably seemed like common sense to Rosie, but she couldn’t imagine either of them confusing a licorice stick for something made using blood. Besides, unless there was something Rosie wasn’t telling them, there was no reason that she would have any of the blood-infused candy. “Though I prefer Skittles.” Jamie said with a nod to herself.

Juliet thought blood-flavored lollipops sounded just a little creepy, so she was glad when Rosie changed the topic by offering them licorice wands. When Jamie commented that they had licorice in the Muggle world as well, Juliet nodded in agreement with a smiling face. "It's cute that it's a wand, though," Juliet observed, and she giggled when Jamie said she preferred Skittles.
After Rosie explained the war, Juliet felt a little self conscious about being a Muggleborn, but her new friends seemed to accept her either way, which she was immensely grateful for. She decided it would be best not to continue talking about such a dark topic, so she tried to turn the conversation in a different direction. "I'm really excited about going to Hogwarts, I think this is the first time I've ever been excited for school," she admitted. "My brother and sister are going to be so jealous when I tell them about it! Although they might end up coming too, when they're old enough. I'm pretty sure my brother's got magic because stuff keeps randomly falling over in the house when he's upset..." rose harriet granger-weasley @jamie

Rosie felt a little embarrassed when Jamie said they had licorice in the muggle world as well. Of course they did, Rosie had got herself into the explanation mentality and maybe went a little overboard. "Oh, right, sorry." she said with blushed cheeks and instead took a bite of her candy wand and glanced out the window. The scenery outside was lovely and green. The train was going in between heavily forested areas and green plains of grass. Every now and then they'd pass a farm with cows and sheep grazing happily.
Rosie loved hearing about Juliet's siblings, as an only child, she was always interested in other family dynamics. "That's cool! It would be so cool to have a sibling at school with you." she said. "I'm an only child." she explained. But she had always been around other kids whether it was kids from primary school or, some of the kids of her parents friends, some were magic and would be attending school with them this year. She wondered where Thalia was, she had to be on the train somewhere. "Do you have any siblings, Jamie?" she asked.

Jamie nodded when Juliet said it was cool that the offered licorice was in the shape of a wand. It wasn’t that different from a licorice stick’s usual shape, but Jamie could always appreciate thematic candy. Rosie apologized for her ignorance of the fact that licorice transcended magical boundaries, but Jamie just smiled at her. It hadn’t been meant to make the other girl feel bad – just lighten the mood a little.
Juliet said this was the first time she had ever been excited for school, and Jamie hesitated before nodding. She was still a little too nervous to be excited, especially when the whole werewolf thing came up. She didn’t know how she was ever going to be able to break that one to her friends. Juliet continued on by saying that her siblings would be jealous, but that her brother seemed to have some sort of aptitude for magic, which was really cool. Jamie didn’t know how common it was for Muggleborns to have magic, but two in the same family sounded pretty interesting. Rosie said she was an only child, and Jamie bobbed her head in a nod. Jamie hadn’t expected the question to be asked of her, and floundered for a moment after it was. “Honestly? I don’t know.” She said. “I don’t really know much about my dad.” Jamie explained, since saying she didn’t know about her family probably wasn’t the answer that she was expected to give. It had just been her and her mum, but from what she knew about her father… maybe she did have siblings she didn’t know about. Jamie hadn’t a clue.

When Juliet noticed that Rosie had become embarrassed, she felt a little guilty. "Don't be sorry! I'm the one who should be sorry, if anyone. I'm the one asking all the dumb questions," she insisted with a smile. After Rosie commented on how it would be cool to have a sibling at school with you, Juliet started thinking about how she was going to have to deal with not seeing her family at all for a whole school year. She felt fine at the moment, but she hoped she wouldn't get homesick in a few weeks or anything.
She was surprised that Jamie didn't know if she had any siblings, because she thought that was something everyone knew, but she didn't judge her for it. "It's okay. My parents aren't together anymore, either," she said without thinking about it. Unsure of why she had just said that, she sunk into an awkward silence. Hopefully it made Jamie feel a little better, at least.rose harriet granger-weasley @jamie

Rosie wasn't quite sure how to respond. She was an only child with parents who loved her and loved each other. She didn't have any family strife to speak of. She had a perfect family dynamic, but she definitely didn't want to say so. She began to feel bad for her childhood, she knew that life wasn't perfect for everyone, but the people she had known in primary school had similar family situations, even her only other magical friend was an only child with parents who were still together and happy.
She decided instead maybe it was nice to change the topic, "Are you guys excited for classes?" she asked, she knew they hadn't got their full schedules yet, but they got their book list so they at least knew their subjects. "I'm so excited for Astronomy! I love the sky and the stars and the moon, it's so fascinating how the sky is always changing but also staying the same." she admitted. She had gone to an Astronomy summer camp last summer where she fell in love with the subject.

Jamie didn’t really know what to say when Juliet said that her parents weren’t still together, either. Jamie was fairly certain her parents had never been together to start with, but considering how awkward her declaration about not knowing about her father had made things, Jamie was fairly certain that adding that on would only make things worse. She was pleased for the change in subject when Rosie asked about classes. The class schedule Jamie had been mailed hadn’t seemed real, with classes like Transfiguration and Charms eclipsing the normal names she was expecting to see, like maths and sciences. “Of course I’m excited!” Jamie giggled. “It’s magic!” She hoped that Rosie wasn’t growing bored of her and Juliet’s endless fascination with the new world they had been thrust into. Jamie was sure that sometimes he was acting more like a five-year-old than an eleven-year-old, but really, who cared!? She was a witch! There were still a lot of new things to do and see and experience, and Jamie wasn’t sure anything would really sink in until she was in the classroom, using the wand that she had purchased and actually making things happen. The idea was exciting enough in theory, but when she could actually cast spells? That was going to be amazing.

When no one responded to her comment, Juliet only felt more awkward and embarrassed, so she was especially relieved when Rosie changed the topic. "Me too!" she smiled in reply when Rosie and Jamie explained how excited they were for school and to learn magic. "I think Potions looks so interesting! But I'm really looking forward to learning about everything, honestly." She hadn't done a lot of reading in her school books yet, but from the few things she had seen so far, she knew she was going to have a lot of amazing things to learn. "I wish I knew a spell or something just so I could try magic..." she thought out loud. She had waved a few wands at the wand shop in Diagon Alley to find the one that was best suited for her, which was fascinating and all, but that was about the only magic she had ever intentionally performed.rose harriet granger-weasley @jamie

"I know a spell!" Rosie said with excitement. She had never used it before, but, her mom had used it on her several times. While Rosie had long, dark brown hair, she often asked her mom to change it to different colors so that she could show the kids at school that was she cool and that her parents let her dye her hair. Little did her friends know that it was a actually a temporary spell that her mom would reverse later that same day. It was a fairly simple spell and didn't require any special wand movement. She took her wand out of her bag and fumbled with it a bit before grasping it in her hand the way that her mother taught her to. She sectioned off a chunk of her hair, pointed the tip of her wand at it and said, "Colovaria." she was intending to change her hair in that section to be a light blue but instead a turned a shade of green much resembling vomit. She then began to remember that she wasn't quite sure of the counter-charm. Rosie wasn't the most confident witch when it came to the actual use of magic

Jamie nodded vigorously when Juliet said that Potions sounded interesting. She agreed wholeheartedly, and the fact that there were potions for werewolves (which Jamie had been able to tell with even a brief skim of her textbook) was fascinating for her. Juliet said she wanted to try magic, to which Rosie replied that she knew a spell. Before Jamie could caution that maybe they shouldn’t try this sort of thing before actually learning it, Rosie was casting a spell on her hair. Jamie blinked a little. The hair was certainly an… interesting shade of green. Jamie’s mother, like all good mothers, had taught her not to say anything if she couldn’t say anything nice, so the blonde remained silently. Luckily for her, there was a knock at the door, and a kindly old witch pushing a cart poked her head in. “Anything from the trolley, dears?” Jamie shook her head, and waited for the other girls to answer before sliding the door shut again. “Do you think we’re getting close? Should I change into robes?” She asked, nerves creeping back in again.

"Ooh, really?" Juliet squealed when Rosie said she knew a spell. She watched as Rosie changed her hair color from dark brown to an odd shade of green. "Er... was that what it was supposed to do?" Juliet asked a little nervously. So maybe they weren't all great at magic yet, but that was what they were going to school for!
An old woman pushing a cart came by their compartment, asking if they wanted anything. "No thanks," Juliet replied politely before Jamie shut the door to the compartment again. Jamie asked if they were getting close and if they should change into their robes, and Juliet realized just how much time had passed since she first asked if she could sit down next to Jamie and Rosie. Apparently it was true that time really did fly when you were having fun. "Yes, that's a good idea," Juliet nodded in reply before opening up her suitcase and finding some robes to wear.
Juliet changed quickly, excited to wear real witch clothes for the first time. Afterwards, she sat back down in her seat and looked out the window once more, feeling that familiar feeling of nervousness and excitement all rolled into one. At least if everything didn't go as planned at Hogwarts, she knew she would have Jamie and Rosie by her side.rose harriet granger-weasley @jamie (As they say, Juliet out!)

Rosie couldn't help but feel overly embarrassed with her little magical stunt. Jamie hadn't said anything, but Juliet asked a question and Rosie felt her cheeks blush even more. "Err...Not exactly..." she admitted quietly, feeling a little bit of shame. She shouldn't have tried to show off, she had never used the spell before, obviously, as students weren't allowed to use magic outside of school. But she had heard her mom use it so frequently that she was so sure that she would get it right.
The trolley-witch came by asked if they wanted anything sweet. Rosie shook her head also, her box of sweets in the bag above her head if she needed anything. She was well stocked, thanks to her mother who spoiled her. Jamie then asked if they should change into their robes. Rosie wasn't sure how long the train ride was, but she had to believe that magical trains moved faster than muggle trains, and the light outside was already starting to get softer. "Yeah, we probably should." she agreed with the other two, fishing her set of robes out of her bag, knowing that the next time she put them on she'd have a colored tie to wear with them. Rosie had no idea that in this moment, standing on the Hogwarts Express, she had met two of her very best friends. She had no idea that they would become her roommates and sport the same yellow and black ties and scarfs that she would. This was the beginning of everything, and if she could go back, she'd linger in his moment longer: when the world was calm and laughter filled the train corridors. When she felt that first wave of excitement overtake her when the castle came into view.
