Zytka pressed her lips together when Diana said that she needed to know. That was a fine excuse for recklessness – needing to know! She had to keep her mouth in a line to keep from scoffing at Diana. Or worse, growling at her, or yelling in frustration. The girl’s eyes, when she peered up at the professor, were bright, clear blue, unnaturally so. It was unnerving, and Zytka wondered if that had been the girl’s intention with choosing the color. Diana continued on by begging Zytka to tell her something, which did nothing to dispel the professor’s anger. The necklace – no, amulet – that sat against her chest was cool once more, but that didn’t stop Zytka from feeling as if she was still burning up from the inside out. “You do not get to ask me for information when you put your life, and the lives of your fellow students, in danger, Miss Bainbridge.” Zytka said, her voice still lower pitched than usual. She waved her hand, and the book that Diana had been using for instruction soared into her hands. The professor doubted it was the only source of instruction that Diana had, but it was certainly one of the more dangerous, if it had actual rituals written in a manner that Diana could understand. “If you do truly wish to know more about soul magic, I have seen that it is pointless to stop you.” Zytka continued. She had once felt the compulsion, too, and on some levels, still did – but she had enough strength of character to temper the desperate need for more. If she hadn’t, then the magic would have eaten her up long ago. “But I cannot trust you, Diana, and that is a necessity in walking down the path that you’ve chosen for yourself.” Zytka would teach, but not if Diana would go behind her back the moment she wasn’t satisfied with what Zytka had to give her. “If you can go two weeks without reading, writing, touching, or performing soul magic, I will consider it. But we will do things my way.” Zytka was not going to put the entirety of Hogwarts school at risk because of one foolish, selfish girl.

Diana swallowed hard at her teacher's words. She hadn't chosen anything that dangerous from the book. She didn't want anyone to get hurt. And yet... "I didn't think it'd be dangerous..." she whispered. She wasn't chasing this to be powerful or endanger anyone. She just... she couldn't explain it. She just needed to know. Needed to keep going down this path.
Despite Professor Kamuntu's obvious displeasure at the whole situation, and the tone of her voice... it sounded as if... as if she'd help Diana? Diana couldn't have heard right. Diana blinked several times, slowly taking in what her teach was saying. About it being pointless to stop her. How she couldn't trust Diana. But how she might... she might tell Diana something if she stayed away from all of this for two weeks. Only once those words had fully sunk in did Diana bolt to her feet. "I can do that, I promise!" Two weeks. She could last two weeks. If it meant maybe getting some answers. If it meant finding out why this 'soul magic' consumed her so much. Two weeks was nothing!

Diana said that she didn’t think that the project would be dangerous, and Zytka continued to bite her lip to keep from snapping out that Diana hadn’t thought, period. That wasn’t going to serve any purpose except making the girl defensive, and that was not what the professor wanted. The Ravenclaw agreed that she could go two weeks without touching soul magic in any of its forms, and while Zytka didn’t know if she believed that, she certainly hoped it would work. On their way down from the tower, Zytka had Diana summon all of the books she had on the subject. When the professor returned to her classroom, all of the books were safely locked away, and an additional magical trip wire was added just in front of their storage location – just in case.
two weeks later
The amulet around Zytka’s neck had remained dormant for a full fourteen days, which meant that Diana had neither attempted more soul magic, nor had she tried to access the books that she had given Zytka on the subject. The professor was a woman of her promises, so when the rest of the class filed out that day, Zytka waved Diana over to her desk. A part of her was still hoping that this was all a fluke, and the Diana didn’t have a capacity for soul magic after all… but there was only one way to test that. Zytka removed the amulet from around her neck (which made her feel rather naked), and handed it to Diana. “What do you feel?”

The two weeks felt like pure hell. Nothing held her attention. And because of that ADD like behavior she was even worse in classes. She challenged and questioned everything. She got in detention at least six times in those two weeks (a new record) and even for an angry letter from her parents because they'd been contacted about her recent behavior. Diana kept her word though. She wasn't a liar. She'd stay away from everything soul magic related for two weeks. She'd keep her word. And maybe... if she was lucky Professor Kamuntu would take some pity on her and tell (or teach) her something in return. That hope was probably all that kept her sane during these fourteen days. And finally. finally after class one day Professor Kamuntu waved her to approach her desk.
Diana tried not to show her intense joy at her Professor initiating the contact but she couldn't stop her brown eyes warming to a pleasant honey. Leaving her bag on her desk she approached, somehow maintaining a relaxed pace despite her emotions. The necklace that her teacher wore, one she recognized only because Professor Kamuntu always wore it was held out to her and she was asked what she felt. A puzzled look appeared as she held out her hands, cupped together, and the necklace was dropped into them. Felt? About today? About the two weeks? She opened her mouth, about to ask what she was supposed to feel when she stopped.
That puzzled look intensified. Because she could feel something. Her gaze immediately dropped to the necklace in her hands. "It's cold." she answered, and she didn't mean the usual cold either. It was unusually cold for having been around someone's neck all day. That wasn't the only thing though, and it wasn't until she'd turned her attention that she felt it.
What was that? It was still dull, as if distant. But she felt... cool. But an immediate cool. Like jumping into a pool on a warm summer day. She had to do a double take to her arms, as if to make sure she hadn't just been dosed in water, then back up at her teacher, still looking thoroughly confused. "Water. It... I don't understand how but... I feel wet." she probably sounded ridiculous..

It was interesting to watch someone interact with soul magic for the first time, Zytka thought as she watched Diana. Her own first experience had been long before her memory started – her grandmother was always fashioning some amulet or other to protect her from the other people in the village or from her own emotions. Watching Diana made Zytka feel almost as if she was reliving a moment that was stolen from her own childhood, because despite the initial confusion that Diana had expressed, Zytka could practically see the magic in the amulet calling out to the magic in Diana. The Ravenclaw heard the call, that much was certain. Zytka waited, patiently, until Diana looked at her arms, and then back at the professor. “It is water.” She answered, to assuage any fears Diana might have had of being crazy. Zytka reached to take the amulet back, fastening it around her neck. “You know by now that what you are studying is called soul magic, yes?” Zytka asked. “Some call it voodoo, but I prefer soul magic. It’s more indicative of what the magic actually is.” The professor explained.
Now came the difficult part. “All witches and wizards, you know, have magic within them. Muggles are simply people who don’t have magic.” It was something that was simple to explain, but things were about to get a lot more complicated. “As you know, some people different magical affinities. It is the reason some people excel at Charms and others at Transfiguration and others at Potions.” That was a succinct way to put a rather complicated problem, but Zytka didn’t have a problem with oversimplifying, and she wasn’t going to continue to do so for the ease of getting all of the information to Diana. “Some people have a similar affinity for soul magic. But unlike other kinds of magic, if you don’t contain the attraction to the talent, it’s impossible to perform. If you were to give someone without the innate ability for soul magic the same amulet you just held, they would just think it a necklace. It wouldn’t feel like water to them. It would feel dead.” Zytka knew that would be hard for Diana to imagine – when you had soul magic within you, the idea of it being absent was almost unthinkable. “It’s like an addiction. The more you learn about it, the more it calls to you. It wants to be unleashed.” Which was why it had been so hard for Diana to walk away from the mystery of the magic after she had first seen the book.
Zytka sighed. There was still so much more to say, and she didn’t want to leave anything out. She took a deep breath, and then returned to speaking. “Within soul magic, there are four different paths, each that allow you to do different things. We don’t get to choose our path any more than we get to choose whether or not we practice soul magic. It just calls to you.” She explained. “My path is water, hence the feeling you get when you interact with my magic.” Zytka’s grandmother had been a water user, as well, hence why she was so adept at it – her teacher had the same path as her. She doubted Diana would be as lucky, since the odds were against it. “Before we can determine which path you go down, though, you need to learn more basic rituals. Supervised, this time.” She said with a little bit of a glare. Zytka stopped talking then, waiting for the questions that were sure to come.

Professor Kamuntu's answer was.... puzzling. That look of confusion never left Diana's expression, slowly processing the information. How could it be water? But, it seemed her teacher wasn't quite ready to answer that yet. Instead, jumping into asking if Diana knew she'd been studying Soul Magic, or Voodoo. Immediately she nodded vigorously, as if unable to bring herself to speak incase it caused Professor Kamuntu to stop explaining.
And explain she did. Diana was totally and completely raptured, her teacher commanding her full and undivided attention. Diana never payed this much attention to one of her teachers before now. While her singleminded attention span was one of Diana's greatest flaws (as Zytka had seen) IT was also one of her greatest strengths. Because right now? It gave her the ability to focus on taking in and understanding exactly what she was being told. About Soul magic being something you needed to have an affinity with, and how some didn't even have the affinity to perform soul magic. The concept was... hard to wrap her head around, but she'd take everything in and ask questions later. For now she needed to keep up. And then... the point she did understand. The one that had been driving her to this conclusion for two years. Addiction was a great word to explain what this felt like. Constanty being drawn to it, wanting to learn more. She slowly nodded, admitting her understanding of that. And continued to listen..
Only when her teacher stopped speaking, her explanation finally done did Diana feel as if she could speak up once more. Only now? There were countless questions in her head. Where should she start first? She pursed her lips together, thinking hard. "So... I do have an affinity with it..?" She asked, slowly. Her teacher had made it sound as if she did, but it was almost as if she had to be double sure. "What are the other paths?" Oh, she could ask countless more. But for now... She needed to get the basic, and obvious ones out first. She knew she couldn't jump in without a better understanding of it. After all, she'd spent years studying before finally coming to the realization that Soul Magic and Voodoo were one in the same.

Zytka smiled wryly when Diana asked if she had an affinity for soul magic. “If you didn’t, we would not be having this conversation.” She replied. Diana definitely had a strong affinity for the magic, to want to pursue it so single-mindedly. Of course, part of that probably had to do with her personality, which Zytka discovered was… intense, in a manner of speaking. Zytka had never been able to evaluate her own affinity with soul magic due to her starting so long, but she would guess that it was strong, given her own ability to do the higher-level rituals with ease. Who knew what Diana would be capable of? “One for each of the elements.” Zytka answered. “Fire, air, earth, water. Each specializes in a different kind of magic.” Zytka explained. There was one more path… the unspeakable one. Zytka blinked the thought away. She couldn’t let Diana know of it, or the girl would continue to pursue it the way that was unhealthy, even if it wasn’t her affinity. No, that would be… a last resort. Zytka didn’t even like to think about it.
“Water is healing of all kinds – both physical and emotional. Fire is… passion, shall we say. Love, hate, lust. Earth is illusions of any kind you can think. And air is nothingness. Air is the balance of the world.” Air could undo the other kinds of magic, not necessarily easily, but permanently. Zytka sometimes wished that her affinity had been air, because in the scheme of the world, air was the most important element. “I think you would do well to start with fire.” It seemed to be the element that Diana’s personality most leaned towards – she was intense and passionate about everything, so it was a natural progression. “But first, we learn about basic rituals. You will meet me in my office on Saturday next so we can begin.” Zytka knew it probably wasn’t wise to make Diana wait even longer, but she needed to prepare for the rituals they were going to perform, and she loathed to let Diana see everything that went into even the simplest rituals until she was even surer of the girl’s self-control.

Diana purses her lips together. She wanted to have an affinity for soul magic. But it made her wonder. If we did... who else? Professor Kamuntu had mentioned that not everyone did. Did any of her sisters or brother? Did Cara? Or was it just her? For some reason she thought Professor Kamuntu might not like the idea of finding out, especially considering how reluctant she was to even teach Diana. So... she'd keep it to herself. The first secret of many she would soon be keeping from her family.
The next bit of instruction and information was immediately catalogued away in her mind, so as to not forget anything. If it meant finally learning something. Getting a proper explanation and education on this... she'd do whatever it was her Professor demanded. Whatever it took. Meeting on Saturday wasn't any sort of inconvenience though. She'd gladly agree to that. "I'll be there!"
And she was. That time. And the next. And the next. Diana never missed a single meeting with Professor Kamuntu. Never overstepped the restrictions her teacher set. Never told anyone what they were really up to with all these private lessons. And she excelled. Any task Professor Kamuntu set before her, Diana would work relentlessly until she mastered it. But despite her natural talent and unyielding determination one thing always eluded them. Specifically Diana's affinity.

Zytka nodded when Diana said that she would be there the next week. She didn’t doubt the Ravenclaw’s presence, considering how fanatical Diana was about the entire thing. As soon as the girl was gone, Zytka ducked into a back office, one that she rarely used. It took quite a bit of doing, but she managed to scrounge together the ingredients for a ritual. She made a mental note to place an owl order – if she was going to be going back into soul magic, she was going to do it well.
Diana’s sixth year
Zytka was quickly growing more and more frustrated. After teaching Diana the basics of soul magic, they had begun to explore what the girl’s affinity might have been. Zytka had been so certain that it was fire that, when the first fire ritual failed, she had been distraught. She had done a repeat, and then a repeat of that, just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke… but apparently, for all of her passion and devotion, Diana wasn’t meant to be a fire user. So, they had moved on. And on, and on. When the four elements didn’t seem to yield any results, Zytka had decided to go through the cycle again. She didn’t want to think about the fifth option, especially since she had successfully kept its existence hidden from Diana.
In her desperation, Zytka had contacted one of her old friends from Uagadou, one who specialized in soul magic. She had given Zytka a ritual that was supposed to help. It required quite the elaborate setup, but when the ritual was complete, it would theoretically compel Diana to say which element she had an affinity with, putting the matter to rest. Zytka and Diana were in the room now, preparing for the ritual and what came after. Zytka had insisted that they go to an even further-flung region of the castle. With such a complicated ritual, and one they had never attempted before, she didn’t want to risk anyone else walking in on them, nor did she want to hurt anyone else if things went awry.

Once they actually began lessons Diana seemed to... calm down a bit. She still did plenty of research and studying on her own but only this time she posed all her findings and questions to Professor Kamuntu, verifying if it was true or false. Instead of being a chaotic mess of determination Diana's singlemindedness finally started to show itself in a more productive light. No matter what happened she wouldn't quit, and this determination to succeed made her a fast study. Even when she failed at one (many) of the rituals she would refuse to give up until she got it right.
So, obviously she was just as frustrated after so many attempts to find her affinity. She tried to reassure herself. That maybe it took like to really grow strong enough. She'd only been studying for a year after all. Or maybe she was just a late bloomer? And that someday it would just click. So, no matter how many times they failed she refused to give up. Finally though it seemed Professor Kamuntu had an idea. Something they could try to finally get an answer. Diana couldn't be more thrilled.
Setting everything up... it was by far the most complicated ritual she'd seen (or tried) thus far. That knowledge made Diana careful. She wanted it to succeed, and after such an elaborate set up she didn't want to have to repeat it just because of one small mistake. No, she would trip check every single step before chalking it out. Measure and re-measure the ingredients to ensure they were exact. All the while she silently repeated in her mind the way the ritual would go, having memorized it through sheer repetition. There was no room for error.
At last though they were done. The intricate chalk symbols stretching out to cover a large portion of the room they'd chosen. Each element was represented within the circle. And all that was left was to finally begin. And that part was on Diana. Once in the circle, Professor Kamuntu wouldn't be able to help. It was perhaps the first time that Diana would perform a ritual purely on her own, with no chance of assistance if anything went wrong. What could though? While complicated this ritual wasn't meant to do anything bad. Still, Diana looked to her mentor quickly, her lips pursed together tightly, before stepping into the circle. Careful, she avoided each of the chalk outlines, and finally settled within the middle of the circle. Taking a slow and deep breath first, she finally began to recite the words. While she was not the best at it her Swahili was clear enough to understand (to those who spoke the language) and she made sure to take her time on the words she still struggled to pronounce so as to ensure she said them correctly. All in all it was going well. Nothing bad, no problems. Nothing. And Diana could feel the power start to hum. Almost like a shiver at first but growing into a rumbling in her bones. A building. It was working!
As fate would have it, those feelings of power building? It changed. It turned to a painful pulling in her chest. something was wrong. What was happening? Diana's eyes flew open to try and find her teacher, to see if maybe she'd know what was happening. But inside she saw someone else. Stepping in the circle. "Get off of that, Elaine-!"
It felt like something had just been ripped out of her the second she said Elaine's name. Diana's breath was gone as an overwhelming weight hit her in her chest... and that pulling? Beyond painful now, right where that weight was.And it felt like it was trying to pull her to Elaine. Letting out the most pathetic attempt to breath (it sounded more strangled then anything else) Diana collapsed to her hands and knees, eyes squeezed shut as they pulling just kept building and building...
What the hell had Elaine done?

Zytka hated having to watch Diana without being able to help the girl. She knew that her student was more than competent on her own – Zytka never would have allowed this to happen if she wasn’t sure of Diana’s ability to perform the ritual correctly – but there was a certain amount of helplessness in watching her pupil strike out on her own, even if it was only for this one time. Zytka knew she had more to teach Diana, but she could only continue to teach the girl if Diana figured out what path she was drawn to follow… hence the need for this ritual in the first place. The tenseness in her frame was obvious as she paced around the circle of chalk that Diana had drawn, careful to give it a wide berth so she wouldn’t smudge any of the symbols. Forcing herself to stand still seemed impossible to Zytka, but eventually she did, standing in such a way that she could see Diana, but not the door. She listened as the Ravenclaw began to mutter the words to the ritual, keeping up with the cadence of the girl’s voice and desperately hoping that Diana wouldn’t say anything wrong. She didn’t, of course, and Zytka closed her eyes for a moment in relief when Diana stopped speaking, hoping that the ritual was working. Apparently a moment was all that was necessary, because when Zytka opened her eyes again, another girl was in the room, someone that shouldn’t have been there. Why wasn’t the other Ravenclaw in Hogsmeade? How had she found them, in this nigh-deserted area of the castle? Zytka moved towards Elaine, trying to intercept her before the circle could be breached and something horrible could happen, but Zytka wasn’t quick enough. Elaine crossed the line, and Diana said her name, and then Zytka could feel the magic in the room change as Diana collapsed to her knees. “Diana?!” Zytka asked, alarm evident in her voice. She approached the circle, but didn’t care cross it, lest it make the situation worse. The Ancient Runes teacher squinted at the other girl inside the circle. “What were you thinking?” Surely even the most trollish of students would know better than to interfere with magic they didn’t know or understand! It had been all too easy, once Elaine had figured out what Diana was getting herself into. She just had to wait for the appropriate time, when Diana was performing this particular ritual to discover her little...affinity, to enact her little experiment. Like Diana, Elaine had studied a variety of magic, rituals, and other things that were not technically taught at Hogwarts. Unlike the Ravenclaw, Elaine was quite certain some of the elements she had been vigorously studying would be rather frowned upon with the Mudblood loving pacifists that ran the school. Still, it wouldn’t be long now before she got out of this godforsaken place and made her mark in the world. She would learn from Grindlewald and Voldemorts’ mistakes. There would be no Snape-like betrayal, and there was no Dumbledore to contend with.
Silently like a shadow in the night, Elaine had followed Diana and the Ancient Runes professor; Elaine had taken the class of course - needing to understand long-forgotten ancient languages was crucial to her plot, but she had made sure that she was just a background figure in the classroom. Keeping silent and still, Elaine watched carefully for her moment as Diana carefully prepared for the ritual. She had to give the girl credit for her attention to detail; if she was not careful, this plan would never have worked. Diana began to chant, and Elaine began to slowly make her move towards the circle, her ears attuned sharply to the words, waiting for the right one. Finally, Elaine saw Diana and the professors eyes close, and she knew this was her moment. Striding forward, she stepped into the middle of the circle, and watched with suppressed glee as Diana’s eyes flew open and registered the girl in front of her. A smile slowly crept onto her face, and Elaine forced herself not to laugh delightedly as Diana opened her mouth.
Elaine.
That was all she had to say for her to complete the ritual Diana didn’t even fully know she was completing. She locked eyes with the Ravenclaw and gave a short nod to her. You’re mine now, Elaine thought to herself. She heard the professors voice, chastising her for stepping in the circle, as if she had no idea what she was doing. Of course Elaine knew what she was doing, but nobody knew that, save now for Diana. Diana wouldn’t be telling Zytka that though, which was perfect. But Elaine was nothing but a terrific actress, and an act she would play for now. Her eyes grew wide and her lower lip trembled as she feigned ignorance. “I-I’m s-sorry P-professor,” she stammered, impressing even herself as a tear slipped down from her cheek. “I was just s-so mesmerized by the chanting...I just HAD to get closer,” she falsely confessed, starting to sob hysterically. This was going to be fun.

The pressure just kept building, and building. Almost like if she didn't give in to the intense pulling in her chest it'd crush her instead. But what was it? Why was she feeling it? What had happened? She'd gone over that ritual numberous times! This sort of side affect... It didn't make sense. It really didn't. And that look she'd seen from Elaine. The older girl meeting Diana straight in the eyes... She didn't know how to explain the intense feelings that contact had stirred, but it did. In so much that everything she was feeling seemed to overwhelm her hearing for a moment, because she didn't hear Professor Kamuntu call out her name. Or the teacher begin to chastize Elaine. But she did hear Elaine's voice. As if it cut through everything she'd been feeling.
And what had been pulling in her chest? It was suddenly gone, leaving an almost... emptiness in her chest but oddly also a weight. As if something had just been pushed upon her, but something had been taken too. Diana didn't know how else to describe it, except that... it didn't feel right and it knocked the breath out of her. Slumping onto her side, because her knees felt to weak to be trusted to support her, she closed her eyes and tried to catch her breath, hoping it would fill the sudden void in her chest. Whatever had happened... the ritual was complete. Whatever complete meant though... Diana didn't know. "Professor...?" She breathed, her voice shaking a little. She didnt move as she lay there on her side, nor did she open her eyes. But despite not being able to see them... "Professor, I can feel her..." She struggled to say, knowing it wouldn't entirely make sense. It didn't make any sense to her. But it was true. It... It was almost like she could sense Elaine's presence. Even with her eyes closed as if she could feel a burning in the direction Elaine was.
What was happening to her..?

Zytka was now thoroughly convinced that every child in this school was idiotic, and totally lacking in any sense of self-preservation. The story about being so mesmerized by the chanting just didn’t add up. By all accounts, Elaine Dupree was an accomplished witch – too accomplished to make such a basic mistake as meddling in something that she knew nothing about. Everything in Zytka screamed wrong, wrong, wrong, but she had bigger problems than Elaine’s intentions in the ritual. Her first priority was Diana, and Zytka knelt down beside the girl, all but ignoring Elaine’s sobs. She had gotten herself into this mess… unlike Diana, whose careful preparation had been ruined by a force that neither of them could have predicted or stopped. Zytka’s hand smoothed Diana’s hair back, and the professor tried not to look alarmed when Diana said that she could feel Elaine. No, no, no… This wasn’t the way it was supposed to go. Zytka took a deep breath, continuing to stroke Diana’s hair. Whether it was to calm the Ravenclaw girl or herself, the professor didn’t know. Her job was to guide Diana, and protect her, and Zytka couldn’t help but feel as if she had failed. But she could make this right… or at least try to. “Diana.” Zytka said, her voice soft and uncharacteristically tender as she tried to calm her student down. “It will be alright.” Zytka wasn’t one for making promises that she couldn’t keep, but if there was one thing that she knew, it was that she was more accomplished in soul magic than anyone in the castle, and perhaps the country. She had more resources than anyone else when it came to this particular brand of magic, and if there was something to find on the subject, then it would be found. Zytka turned her attention momentarily to Elaine. “Leave.” There was no question that Zytka meant the order to be followed. The Ancient Runes professor didn’t anger easily, but she was angry now, and Elaine definitely didn’t want to be receiving end of Zytka’s wrath. @diana Elaine Lyra Dupree

Elaine came close to dropping her facade at Zytka’s orders. Who was this foreign witch trying to tell her what to do? A fiery rage built up in the center of her chest, and her fingers twitched just fractionally towards her wand. She restrained herself though, and flicked a glance over at Diana. Don’t tell her anything she internalized to Diana. She didn’t know all of the specifics for what she had done to the girl, but she knew that the Ravenclaw would understand her intent, and follow it. This Ancient Runes professor would only know what Elaine allowed Diana to tell her; since she was here, Elaine assumed Zytka knew about the type of magic Diana had been attempting, and would deduce what had happened soon enough. She wouldn’t be able to prove anything though; Elaine wouldn’t allow Diana to aid in her troublemaking. Not when she was so close to getting out of this miserable castle.
“As you wish..professor,” Elaine said softly. She threw a glance over towards Diana and allowed the ghost of a smile before standing up and turning around. Knowing the two couldn’t see her face, the grin widened menacingly. Diana was hers now, and there was nothing she could do about it.
