TW: discusion of child loss It hadn't been easy to get permission to visit the school, but the circumstances were... special to say the least. The former Ravenclaw scoffed at that word. "Special." There was nothing special about this, but that had been the word the Auror used when he explained to the Head Nurse why Odette needed to use her office. The Auror stood outside the office, of course, while Odette was inside. She couldn't be left unsupervised considering all the dangers lately. Another Auror had gone to fetch Jamie and the Head Nurse had made tea for Odette and left another cub, presumably for Jamie, before she took her leave to tend to the students in the hospital beds. Seeing them didn't necessarily make Odette feel better, either.
Odette hated that she had to meet Jamie in the nurse's office of all places, but she understood that the Headmistress was busy. This wasn't important in the grand scheme of things, of course, but it was important to Odette. And Odette knew it would be just as important to Jamie, too. So Odette sat in one of the arm chairs that faced the nurse's desk for patients, staring at her steaming cup of tea that she dared not touch. She held her hands tightly together in her lap and stood very stiffly in the chair as she waited for Jamie. She took in a deep breath that she couldn't seem to find the courage to let out.

Jamie had been terrified from the moment the Auror had been let into the Hufflepuff common room and asked for her. The fact that she had so much family now made Jamie unsure of who she ought to be worrying about, especially since the Auror wouldn’t tell her anything, just lead her through the Hogwarts hallways. Had Adrian gotten hurt? Had some overzealous fan attacked Elias because he was Champion? Was it her mother, still living in the Muggle world and blissfully unaware of everything that had happened, and all the people who were being murdered? Jamie knew better than to ask any questions, so she just continued to follow. Luckily, the walk wasn’t long. When they stopped, they were in front of the hospital wing, and Jamie was instructed to go into the nurse’s office. That involved announcing herself to another Auror who was standing outside the closed door. When he opened the door for her, Jamie slipped into the room, and then found herself face-to-face with her sister. Jamie’s heart sank. Of all of her fears, this had been her worst – something happening to her sister and her sister’s baby. Jamie didn’t even know what to say. If everything was okay, then Jamie wouldn’t be here, so it seemed stupid to ask. “What happened?” Jamie questioned instead, swallowing to fight back the tears that were already beginning to threaten.

Odette knew this was going to be a hard conversation to have. There was no way around it. But as time passed, Odette felt more and more like she was going to suffocate. She felt sad for herself and her baby, sure, but she had seen Jamie sad one too many times to her liking. She didn't want to have to be the one to do this. But she knew she had to. It felt like hours had passed since the Auror had left to get Jamie, but in reality it was just minutes before Jamie had stepped into the office and was facing Odette now. The look on Jamie's face was enough for Odette to let out that breath she had been holding in a gasp as she started sobbing. She couldn't help it anymore. "I - I - lost - the - baby," she cried between sobs, finally letting herself cry again. She hadn't cried since she had found out about the baby. She couldn't. After spending so much time crying about Jacob, she didn't think she could ever cry again. Oh, how she was wrong.

Jamie thought that she had probably known what had happened before Odette spoke, but had refused to admit it. The words just made what she didn’t want to recognize the reality. Jamie took a deep breath, and by the time she let it out, there were already tears pouring down her face. Jamie didn’t hesitate to wrap her sister in her arms, hugging Odette as hard as she could. Her sister didn’t deserve this, losing both the boy that she loved and his child in the matter of a few months. No one deserved this, of course, but Odette least of all. Her sister liked to play at being distant and reserved, but Jamie knew that it wasn’t who she really was. Odette had so much love, and she was just beginning to realize she could give that love to her child, and it killed Jamie a little. The Hufflepuff just kept squeezing. “I’m so sorry.” She said, pressing her face against her sister’s chest. “I’m… so sorry.” It wasn’t like there was anything that Jamie could have done to prevent this – neither of them could have done anything, really – but if the universe wasn’t going to take responsibility for taking her sister’s heart and stomping on it, then Jamie would. “Will there be a… f-f…” She couldn’t get out the word “funeral”, but she hoped Odette understood. Leaving the Hogwarts grounds wasn’t easy – and neither was coming in, for that matter – but Jamie would do it. Odette needed someone to look out for her, with Jacob gone, and Jamie was going to be the one to do it. She owed her sister that much.

Odette didn't even hesitate in wrapping her arms around her sister when Jamie put her arms around her. It had been so long since she had had someone to just hold her, and for her to hold back. She had been going through this whole thing alone, and as much as it made her happy to finally be with someone, it still made it so much more real. As Jamie muttered apologies, Odette just held on to her sister for a few moments more until her sobs calmed down. She was much quieter when Jamie seemed as though she was going to ask a question. Odette didn't need to ask for clarification as to what the question was going to be, even though Jamie didn't finish. She knew. "I... I don't know," she said blankly. "I really don't know if I could handle that after... everything." She hadn't even been able to attend Jacob's, and she had felt like such a coward for it.

The more times Jamie hugged Odette – it seemed to be happening more often lately – the more she was sure that she and her sister were made to hug each other. Holding Odette just felt close, especially since Jamie knew that there was nothing to do to comfort her sister except for hug her. Thankfully, despite the Hufflepuff’s lack of clarity, her Ravenclaw sister was able to determine what she meant. “That’s fine.” Jamie said, her voice only wobbling slightly, when her sister said she didn’t know if she could handle a funeral. Honestly, Jamie wasn’t sure how she would be able to handle it herself. “What do you need from me?” Jamie asked, pulling back from Odette a moment so that she could look her sister in the eyes. Odette was a little blurry still due to the haze of tears, but Jamie wanted her sister to know that, no matter what, the Hufflepuff was going to be there. She just needed to know what she could do, and she would do it.

Odette was beyond grateful that Jamie seemed to understand why she couldn't handle a funeral. At this point, Odette wasn't even sure how she was going to handle tomorrow... so she knew she definitely couldn't handle that. If she wasn't busy sniffling up her years, she probably would have smiled at her sister gratefully. Then Jamie was asking what Odette needed from her and she found herself so thankful to have her in that moment. If she had not met her siblings, she would have to be doing this alone and she was so happy she didn't have to. "I just... I just need you here. With me," Odette sniffed. She felt so vulnerable, and she hated that feeling. "That's all."

Jamie was relieved by Odette’s answer to her question, not because her request was easy, but because it as possible. And not only was it possible…. But it was really the only thing that Jamie was good at. She was good at being there for people when the world fell apart, even if she wasn’t quite sure how to put it back together. “I will always be here, Odette.” Jamie said, wrapping her arms around her sister once again for a short squeeze before withdrawing so that she could fish out a handkerchief for Odette to use. “Family always comes first.” Jamie asserted as she offered the white cloth to her sister. Two years ago Jamie hadn’t imagined having so many people to put before herself, but here she was, willing to give up anything, really, for a handful of people that she hadn’t known for all that long.

Odette was able to manage a small smile when Jamie gave her a hankerchief to use. The brunette accepted and quietly attempted to blow her runny nose. It was exactly what Odette needed, to hear those words from Jamie. More so, family was exactly what she needed. Odette couldn't imagine going through this alone. "Thank you, Jamie," Odette said after a short moment of silence when she blew her nose. "I... I don't know what I'd do without you." A year ago, Odette never could have pictured herself telling that to anyone except maybe Royal. Much less a sister she didn't know she had for most of her life. Yet, here she was. Here they were. They were family, and Odette could not have been more grateful.

Jamie wasn’t sure she deserved thanks for simply stating what the two of them both knew to be true, but she accepted it anyways, dipping her head in a half-nod at her sister’s words. What Odette said next was slightly more shocking, and Jamie had to pause for a moment to process it all. Odette, the one sibling Jamie thought she would never be able to be close to, was saying that she didn’t know what she’d do without the Hufflepuff. And Jamie felt the same way. While all her other siblings were warm and whimsical and crazy, Odette was cool, but soft and firm. She was the earth when all Jamie’s other siblings were the sky, and that didn’t make her nay less… just different. The Hufflepuff wiped at her eyes again, trying not to show how much the words had meant to her. “I guess it’s a good thing you’re never going to have to find out.” Jamie whispered. She wasn’t good at leaving in the first place, but Jamie knew it was going to be impossible for her to ever leave her sister… not when Odette wanted her to stay.
@odette (end here? and we can do the mildly happier one at a later date?)
