@luke It was too warm out already. She didn’t care if it was the end of April. The fact remained that the sun was out, and it was beating down on her and scorching her skin. The drastic change from the mild, rainy winter to this was too much for her. Northeast America had a much more gradual change, and Finn was starting to miss that a little bit. Luckily there was a fix to the heat: ice cream. She had stumbled across the family run store during her first week in London, sometimes back in January, and had yet to visit it. She didn’t need to be cooled down when it was already chilly out. Today was a different story though, and currently she was heading from her apartment to Diagon Alley. It was always an adventure, going from her typical no-maj apartment building to the strange alleyways that formed the magical shopping center. No one had told her that the infamous Diagon Alley was going to look like something straight out of a fairytale. New York City had its own quirks when it came to magic, but it was all about knowing the right kind of buildings and the shops that occupied them. There was more crossover with the no-maj shops. Just that only a tourist would ever wander into a shop for witches and wizards, and even then, they would never find anything that would cause a problem. Here though, if someone wasn’t careful, the entire magical community in London would be exposed. She supposed that could be applied to New York as well, but since it had never happened during her time there, there really wasn’t a reason to worry.
Walking through the pub that separated the non-magic from the magic, she was blasted by the mystical sight of Diagon Alley once again. A lot of time had been spent here so far; there were various stores that she had her eye on for black market deals and other things. Most of it had nothing to do with her long term goals, but it was still good to have a list of those that were breaking the rules. Since she wasn’t currently associated with any law enforcement agency, it was slightly easier to get shopkeepers to admit what they were selling behind locked doors. That and her being an American apparently meant that they were fine with giving her the details. As if she would ever travel all the way to London just to get better deals on black market supplies. Apparently they had never heard of Louisiana. New Orleans was a hot bed of dark magic and other oddities. Now that she thought of it, it was probably better that they avoided that kind of stuff. Not even MACUSA truly understood what was going on down in the bayous. It was probably better that way.
Slowing to a walk as she entered the throng of shoppers, Finn eyed a few window displays as she went on her way. There were a few things she was still missing since her move. Why it had taken her four months to realize that, she didn’t know. Every time she came through Diagon Alley, there was always something else. Thankfully a lot of money had been put into savings prior to moving, and her apartment was cheap. Stopping in front of a display for Quidditch jerseys, she pushed past a few people to get close enough to read the names. Eventually she’d get around to watching a match live.

Luke landed in London at the beginning of the month and had been staying at a hostel in muggle London since the second night of his stay. He had learned so much about the UK so far and how magic worked here. They had funny words for things, words he had never heard before, for example, the world muggle. And he wasn't sure where the word came from. At least the term No-maj made sense. They were people with No Magic. Muggle just sounded like a completely made up word to the American man.
Luke had just recently found a job. After a week of bumbling around Diagon Alley he finally made his way to Hogsmead where he was hoping to make his home-base. He wandered into the local pub in the small mountain town and discovered very quickly that they were searching for a new bartender. Luke had never tended bar before, back in America he worked on a farm as a farm hand and tended to cattle and horses. But if he was being honest, he spent enough time in the bars anyway and had picked up a few tricks of the trade. He passed his interview test and knew how to throw together most drinks. Plus, he was charismatic enough to talk his way into the gig.
However, on days that he didn't work or before his shifts, the man still spent most of his time in Diagon Alley or hunting for an apartment, something that Brits called a Flat, which again, he didn't understand. A flat was a tire in need of air, not somewhere that he wanted to live. But he knew better than to pick an argument about it. To the English, American slang was weird. Luke wandered the alley today, he had a shift later tonight but until then he was free as a bird.
The alley was filled with people, all of which going about their business, popping in and out of shops and munching on food on the patios of cafe's along the lanes. The American man was stepping out of the Bank at the end of the row where he had finally managed to open an account of his own. he had completely emptied his American accounts and had just been carrying around his life savings for the past few weeks. He knew it was smarter to put it away where it was safe and only accessible to him, especially while he was staying in a hostile. While he walked back down the lane, he spotted a familiar face and had to look twice to confirm that he knew the witch. It threw him off since she was someone he had known from school back in America and he hadn't known that she had moved to England also. His approached the witch with a smirk on his face. She appeared to be just browsing shop windows when he got to her. "Excuse me Miss. Do you have the time?" he asked, still smirking, wondering if she'd recognize him.

@luke Try as she might, she couldn’t figure out what the names on the back of the Quidditch jerseys were supposed to mean. There were so many different ones she had never seen before! Not to mention the team names. There seemed to be both local and international players, and where the line between them was distinguished, she didn’t know. Quidditch hadn’t been all that popular back home. It was occasionally played, but nothing more than a scrimmage here or there, and the professional league (if you could even call it that), didn’t draw huge crowds. Suffice to say, it was nothing compared to the rabid fan base over here. Just by looking through the shop window, she could tell that the store was crowded. Leaning back from the display, Finn decided that today was definitely not the day to check that out. She had other plans, and a date with ice cream if the parlor was still open by the time she got to it.
Nodding her head to confirm that she was continuing on her way, Finn turned to see a man standing next to her, asking her if she had the time. It took a few seconds to process because she was trying to figure out why Luke Maebury was in front of her. First came the question of why he was here, in London of all places, and then was the one about why he was asking her for the time. Then it clicked. “Luke?” Finn practically burst out, her slight confusion turning into a smile. She had maybe briefly seen him once after she had graduated, but aside from that, the last time had been her last year at Ilvermorny. They had only been a year apart, so getting to know him over the years had been relatively easy. Everyone in Wampus always seemed to get along. It had to do with the drive to fight and be better, she supposed. Those traits hadn’t exactly been applicable to her during her school years, but they had certainly become true once she took the job as an auror. “What are you doing here? Vacation?” she continued to question. “Sorry for all the questions, you just caught me off guard. It’s been so long…how’ve you been?”

Luke gave her a smirk when she put together who he was. She seemed excited to see him, something he both wasn't expecting and wasn't surprised to see from her. She was a year older than him, but a member of his same house back in Ilvermorny, and the house was a rather close one despite them having been known as the fighters of the school. It wasn't quite as competitive as most expected that it would be. At least for the most part. Luke was a fighter, that was true. But even though he was a strong, broadly built man, he wasn't very physical. He fought for the people he loved and the things that he believed in. He was fiercely protective and incredibly loyal. However, he never felt the house was the wrong choice for him. Wampus was a part of him and likely always would be. "Yeah it's me. Hey there Finn, how've you been?" he asked his house-mate. He had a few questions for her, as she obviously did for him. It was good to see her and would be really good to catch up. She had been one of those people that he felt fairly close to during their time at school. Since she was older than him, she graduated when he was still a 6th year and he hadn't really seen her since. America was a big country and not many people stayed nearby after graduation.
She asked if he was here on vacation and then insisted that he had caught her off guard, something that was quite evident to the American man. "Actually I just moved here a few weeks ago." he admitted, fairly sure that it would cause even more questions. "It's good. I'm just trying to figure out my way around and get to know the area, trying to find an apartment, you know, all the basic stuff. You live here now too?" he asked.

@luke The man in front of her was Luke! He looked older since the last time she had seen him. That had to have been at least three years now, right? Obviously they were both going to look different from when they were in school. She for one had decided to use her body as a human canvas immediately after graduating. Currently she had on long sleeves, so there was no way he would be able to see all the tattoos, but they were certainly there. That was usually the first remark former classmates had for her. That and finding out she was an auror. Ex-auror now, but it still applied. Even she had bet on returning to the no-maj world and trying to find a normal job there if magic didn’t work out. All of those possibilities were still mind-numbing for her. Being a normal person again would have been strange. “I’ve been doing well…” she trailed off, wondering if that was exactly how she felt on the whole thing. “I guess I wish they would have told us what being adults was like while we were still in school, you know? That was years ago and it’s still overwhelming.” That and her agenda to get to the bottom of England’s problems didn’t really help her much. There were so many different things going on at once, that it was no wonder the government was having issues. Far too little man-power spread extremely thin.
He had moved here too? Finn was sure her jaw had dropped at that statement. A southern gentleman like him, living in London? Apparently she had been thrown into some kind of alternate reality in the last few months. And here she thought that she was a fish out of water. Finn nodded her head as he pointed out that he was still getting used to everything. Figuring out the basics in a new city was difficult. Especially without connections. At least back home, any major city probably had a person met during school. That was just how it worked. Here though? The occasional American on vacation that knew just as much about everything as the next tourist. She had discovered that pretty fast. “I moved here in January. So it’s been a few months. Still adjusting to it too though. They really reject a lot of no-maj stuff, which is kind of impressive, in its own right.” She had seen an occasional cellphone on a younger person, but that was it. Apparently the integration hadn’t worked as smoothly over here as it had in America. Or at the least, they hadn’t seen it as a necessity yet. That only explained the issues they were having with dark wizards even more.
“But the apartment search is definitely the worst. I opted to live in the no-maj part of London. Trying to deal with landlords around here was a nightmare, and the conversion of dragots to British pounds is decent, so it was a no-brainer in the end.” Hopefully spouting off economics wouldn’t bore him to death. She had learned so much about everything in the last few months that it was refreshing to tell it to someone who could actually use the information. “Job hunting too, I take it?”

He laughed when she said she wished that Ilvermorny had prepared them more for live once they were done with school. He agreed wholeheartedly. "Yeah it'd be nice if they offered some 7th year elective that would cover real life issues." he nodded. However, he knew there was no class that would have helped him with his real life drama. No classes could prepare you for the shock of finding out that not only were you adopted and lied to about it for your whole life, but you also had two biological siblings on the other side of the Atlantic ocean. He was being dramatic, he knew it. And of course, it was far to angsty of a thought to say out loud, but it was one that sat with him a majority of the time. Luke felt lost. He didn't know what his plan was for life anymore. He barely knew what he wanted to do back in America. He knew he couldn't be a farmhand forever. And he didn't want to be. He had considered going into teaching, but hadn't quite made it that far before he got the news.
She went on to say that she had been living here since January. Impressive, Luke thought. She seemed to be doing alright with it all. It was a good source of inspiration to see her thrive in this foreign culture. "I've noticed that." Luke nodded. He hadn't really seen anyone with a cell phone, not in any of the pubs, or shops or even in Hogsmead Village. Granted, he could understand why some older wizards would reject the concept, however, the students had to be curious about it. He doubted they allowed them at school, but maybe they would use them in the village. He hadn't worked there yet during a weekend when the students were allowed to visit so he wasn't sure. "Kind of weird." he smirked.
"I was hopping to find somewhere in Hogsmead, but I'm not sure if that's gonna happen. Or if I could even afford it." he agreed. It seemed that wizard landlords were a little more particular and it was slightly harder to get an apartment around here. However, he hadn't even tried to look in No-maj London. He was staying in a hostel with no-majs now, but he wanted to find a place as quickly as possible. "It's not too weird living with them?" he asked her. She asked if he was job hunting also and he shrugged. "I just got a job, actually. I'm a bartender in Hogsmead at the Three Broomsticks. I'm not sure how much you know about the village." he said. "It's real close to Hogwarts." he nodded.

@luke What a different world it would have been post-graduation if Ilvermorny had shown them what life would really be like. Finn couldn’t recall exactly what she thought her life was going to be, but it certainly wasn’t this. Becoming an auror had been an accident almost, and while she was grateful to have done that now, a seventeen year old Finn would have laughed at the idea. Sticking up for others and becoming law enforcement? Yeah, right. And yet she did, and it had been easily the most rewarding thing she had ever done in her life. Who would have thought? “Totally agree. They just threw us out here, didn’t they?” She laughed. At least being an auror kind of taught her how to deal with real issues. It also humbled her immensely. The problems that she thought she had were nothing compared to some witches and wizards. It was that those kinds of experiences that had placed her where she was now. London and the Ministry were currently in the same kind of crisis that she wanted to squash from existence. People didn’t deserve to live in fear. “It is weird, isn’t it? Not phones will work in magic hot beds like Diagon Alley, but they’re really old school. Some of the shopkeepers are just as ancient and crusty as their belief systems are.” Some had become more modern; cash registers, correct lighting, etcetera, etcetera. Others were like taking a step back into the old days, whatever those were. Definitely little to no technology, regardless.
She listened intently as Luck explained that he had a job in Hogsmeade as a bartender and was hoping to find somewhere to live near there. That would be…tough. She had thought the same at first. Being close to Hogwarts would put her within spitting distance of an army of aurors and any problems that could potentially arise at the school. But it wasn’t economical, and her wallet would have been hurting by now. No-maj London though? No big deal. “I’ve been a few times, but never during a day when students are around. It’s probably maddening over there, with the tournament starting to wrap up.” Finn purposely held off on her answer about living around no-maj. That one had a little more finesse to it, since some people took offense to it. Not much back home as they did here though. “Not weird at all for me, since I’m no-maj born. Actually, it feels more normal. Gets me away from all of this at the end of the day,” she added as she shrugged. “If you have the chance to give it a shot, definitely do it. My place is huge, and dirt cheap compared to Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley properties.”

He nodded that they just threw them out into the world without a lot of support, which was both a negative and a positive. On one hand, they did have to learn their way around the world and figure out how to get work and find a place to live on their own. Which came in handy now that he was trying to use those skills halfway around the world. However, a little support in how to find a job, or some shadowing program to follow around someone who had the job that they wanted for the day, or career coaching from someone who had that career could have been helpful. She went on to explain that no muggle phones would work in magical districts and he nodded. He had found that out already, but it was interesting. "I've noticed that too," he said again with a chuckle. There were some shops that he hadn't yet gone into, and that was at least partly due to the fact that the shopkeepers frightened him. The alley had an old-school, rustic charm and Luke liked it, however, it felt a little stale. Weasley's Wizard Weezes down the street was a breath of fresh air, though. Something modern and very fun. "It's an interesting little alley. I haven't explored much of London, though. I'm sure it's way more modern." Luke said.
"I haven't seen a lot of students around either yet." Luke admitted. He had worked mostly night shifts, which he liked as a night person. He knew about the tournament, however he didn't have a lot of interest in it. She explained that it wasn't weird for her living in London because she was no-maj born. Of course, he had forgotten. That made sense and he nodded when she explained it to him. "Well if you're ever in the market for a roommate, let me know." Luke smirked, mostly kidding. Though it did sound pretty good, space would be good, and he didn't have a lot of money to spend on housing. At least not yet. His plan was to work hard and save up, at least for a while. He wanted to be able to get a place of his own eventually that was his siblings could stay with him if they wanted to. But he wasn't sure how realistic that was right away.

@luke At least the lack of technology wasn’t just her going crazy. If Luke had noticed its nonexistence, then that meant it was just how the magical culture was over here. History classes at Ilvermorny had covered the more important aspects of England’s magic, but these kinds of things were always glossed over. For her, coming from a no-maj family, not having technology was stranger than anything else she had experienced. School and work were certainly made more interesting without it, but not having her phone working correctly was still a bother. Try as she might, she was still a millennial at heart. Her sister was even worse about it, so there was that. “London is great. There are old parts, but there’s a modern feel to it. The smaller towns and countryside villages have that classic feeling to them.” Finn hadn’t spent a huge amount of time traveling outside of the city, but the few times she had made it out, it had been blissful. Eventually, once her job was done, she was going to pack up a car and go for a trip around the country to sightsee before returning to New York. The countryside here compared to the one she grew up in was different, yet it also wasn’t at the same time.
Not seeing students around Hogsmeade was strange, but also freeing. She could only imagine what Diagon Alley was going to look like the second school ended. Being able to think without a constant crowd buzz was nice. New York City had never been like that for her, especially when trying to sleep with the windows open. If the crowds weren’t loud, then the cars in the street were. The magical communities here were subdued compared to that. “You just jinxed it,” she joked. “Honestly, I feel like seeing students is going to make me nostalgic. It took me a few years to get over graduating.” It all went so fast. She had never imagined to have been swept up into MACUSA while she was still at school, and even after becoming an auror, she wouldn’t have believed that eventually she would move to London. Especially on her own and without a prospective job. “I do have a second room that isn’t being used…” Finn mused, not realizing that she had said it out loud. “Can’t say it’s too close to Hogsmeade though, so it would have a commute.” The thought of having a roommate had never crossed her mind in the last few months. She had reveled in the fact that the apartment had been a steal, and decided that she was already saving a ton of money from it. “Better than living in a hotel,” she reasoned, shrugging once again.

He listened to her description of London and nodded. It looked, from pictures anyway and the brief bits that Luke had seen of it when he flew in and took a taxi to the Leaky Cauldron on that very first day, it looked like a story book. It looked like what a lot of the older cities, the ones that had started out as colonies in the United States, had based their architecture off of. "But technologically more modern." he clarified. "At the airport every around me was on their phone while they waited in customs." he told her. Including himself, though he hadn't used his phone for anything other then the occasional phone call to check in with his mother since he had been in England. he had been hard at work figuring out the culture and the magic scene here.
"I still don't really know if I'm over it." he admitted. His school years really had been the best years of his life, just like everyone always said it would be. he had met his best friends, he had studied the things that mattered to him. He had grown and figured out who he was and who he was meant to be; or so he thought at the time. "You serious?" Luke asked, a wide smile spreading across his face. He was so tempted to take her up on her offer, but he wanted to make sure she meant what she was saying. It almost sounded to goo to be true. "If you are, then yeah! That would solve a lot of problems for me." he admitted.

@luke Finn realized that she had partially misinterpreted Luke’s question about London as he continued to explain it. That made more sense than London being a ‘modern’ city. If the dozens of coffee shops with free internet on every street weren’t a sign of technological improvement, then she didn’t know what was. That and the phones. They were everywhere. Finn knew she was part of that crowd, but it wasn’t like she was glued to it. The thing didn’t even work in Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade, which were both places where she spent the majority of her time prowling around. Magical households also tended to have blockers against phone signals. She wasn’t sure how those worked exactly, but they were apparent when they showed up. “Crazy isn’t it?” Finn responded to the airport bit. “I wish there was an easier way to get over here, but I suppose they need to know who we are and why we’re here.” Which was funny because so far she didn’t have a plan. She had told no-maj customs that she was there for work; MACUSA had granted her proper paperwork for that. That had a limit though, and she was hoping that the Ministry would be able to extend that if worse came to worse. Not like she couldn’t simply disappear into the magical world if she had issues with no-maj authorities. Then again, this wasn’t the United States. Whether they cared or not about her being here was completely different from back home.
Bringing up school again only served to stir all the memories again. It hadn’t been that long – only five years for her. That was almost like going to college and graduating like all the no-majs did. If anything, it was strange that she had been working a serious job for so long and was only 23. No-majs straight out of college would be the same age as her, and just starting to get into the working world. Now that was a scary thought. “Work helped me get by it pretty fast. Hard to contemplate being done with school when criminals are launching spells at you,” Finn shrugged. It was true. She had thought of it more now that she was in London, since there was time for that kind of thing. The auror department had kept her extremely busy over the last few years, enough that she didn’t have time to be super nostalgic about everything.
“Yeah, why not? If you want it, it’s yours,” Finn confirmed. “As long as you’re fine with having a dog follow you around everywhere. He likes new people,” she laughed, visualizing the husky trying to figure out why Luke was in their house. “It’s probably a mess right now since I haven’t attempted to clean up after moving in, but it’s not a bad place. Bedrooms and kitchen are pretty big. I can tell you more about it over-” she peered over Luke to see if there was a line at the ice cream place she had been planning on going to. From her position, it looked busy. There were plenty of other days for that though. “-coffee?”

Luke nodded at the comment that there really should be an easier way to wizards and witches to get from one continent to another. However, he hadn’t really minded his time spent on the airplane. He got a lot done, not that he really had work to do. But he had caught up on a few movies and he had read a large part of a book that he had been meaning to read for a few months. And he had gotten to know the elderly couple seated next to him that were taking a dream vacation around Europe as a gift for their retirement. How sweet. She mentioned that work helped her get over missing school pretty quickly and Luke realized that her work must have been the reason that she was in the UK. He was still flabbergasted that he hadn’t known that one of his best friends had moved. They hadn’t gotten a chance to see each other much over the past year or so, and he understood why. “So you moved here for work then, I take it. Very nice. You working for the ministry now?” he asked.
She said she had a second room and it was his if he wanted it. She had a dog, something he was pretty sure he already knew, but he nodded about anyway. “I like dogs.” he promised with a smirk. She went into explaining the situation but then decided that she could tell him more about it over coffee. “Yeah, sounds good. I don’t have anything to do until work this evening.” he admitted. “Shall we then?” he asked gesturing for her to lead the way.

@luke Moved here for work. Finn let that float around in the air for a few moments as she thought of how to answer the question. Yes and no was the proper response, only because she was technically still doing the same work that she would be doing in New York, but also not really because she wasn’t employed by anyone. At least not yet. If money became an issue, she knew that she could easily get an order of transfer to join the aurors in the Ministry. The problem with that was that they definitely would not let her get away with the things that she was currently working on and following up on; the legal line was crossed almost daily with her, and them finding out about that probably wouldn’t go over very well. She also didn’t want to be constricted by the Ministry’s rules, when they were vastly different from what she was used to at MACUSA. While tactics and training were the same, protocol was apparently different from back home. Teaching an old dog new tricks was supposedly impossible, and age and lack of body hair aside, Finn was pretty sure being re-trained for the Ministry would be extremely difficult on everyone involved. Freedom had its pros and cons, and she preferred to keep it that way for the time being. “Kind of,” she answered vaguely. “I’m not currently employed over here, but I’m still doing work. If that makes sense?”
Luke gave her all the answers that she wanted to hear. The check boxes were getting marked off rather fast. He was fine with dogs, they already knew each other so there wouldn’t be too many awkward exchanges between them, and he could pay for rent. The last thing would be to make sure he cleaned his dishes immediately after using them, or left them sitting out for days on end. One of her prior roommates had been the latter, and it increasingly became annoying over time. She could only be nice for so long before enough was enough. That and the bugs that garbage and uncleaned dishes brought were totally not her thing. Zapping them away sounded like a good idea until a spell eventually misfires and multiplies them instead. “Perfect! There should be a place right down here.” Stepping around Luke, she started off in the direction of one coffee shop that she knew of. It was right next to the ice cream place too, so that meant there was a possibility she could jump over there after Luke departed for work. Hope may have been lost momentarily, but her tactical thinking always paid off in the end. “So I don’t think I caught it earlier, but why’d you move here?” Finn asked as their walk continued. “Not that bartending is a bad gig, it’s just that you could do that pretty much anywhere.” Like she was one to talk. She didn’t even have a job.

She explained that she wasn’t employed but was still doing work. It made sense, at least mostly. He had the idea that she was doing some sort of underground work, but he couldn’t picture her doing anything illegal, so he didn’t feel like he needed to push it any further. He was sure there was a reason that she was currently working without ministry backing and if she hadn’t told him anymore than what she already had, he was sure there was a reason that she couldn’t. So he nodded. “Yeah, I get it.” he agreed.
The two started walking towards a coffee place that she thought was right down the alley. While they walked, she asked why he had moved here, a simple enough question, but not very simple to him. He had been telling people vaguely had he had moved here to be closer to family. But, Finn was someone that he knew and, especially if he was going to be living with her, she was someone who deserved the truth. “Uh, well I found out I was actually adopted, and my biological family live here, I think.” he admitted. It seemed so simple when it came out in a sentence like that. But little did Luke know what getting to know his Biological family would entail and the heartbreak and betrayal of everyone involved.

@luke Luke didn’t ask questions about her current employment decisions so Finn let it pass in peace. It had been tough enough explaining to her parents that she was moving to England because she felt like she needed to. They didn’t really understand the scale of what was going on, and she couldn’t blame them. There were more serious no-maj issues to deal with; ones that she had completely lost interest in once the magical world was introduced to her. Getting her sister through high school was pretty important too. It was unfathomable how different of lives they led, and yet still maintained a level of understanding for one another. That was something that some people couldn’t understand. That was also why she was over here now, and not back home with her family. One day they would be told about her travels, if she got the chance. A lot of explaining would probably be necessary, but they would never tell her to stop telling them. She could imagine that not having a support system like that in a no-maj home might be difficult.
Finn wasn’t sure what she expected Luke to tell her why he was in England. Probably work, like most young adults. That was always the logical reason. Either that or vacationing and deciding to work part-time to earn a little extra money. It was amazing how many things could be done on the weekends with mainland Europe so close. Instead of almost knowing what he was going to say, she stopped walking at his answer. “Wait…you’re adopted?” she repeated in disbelief. “Like, your birth family is actually from England?” That was crazy. Being shipped over to the United States when his birth family was here the entire time. Didn’t they have orphanages for magical children over here? It seemed a little preposterous to her that they would send him overseas when they had everything right here.
