overall personality:
It really depends on the day what you’ll get out of Nico but for the most part she’s nice and all about getting things done. When it comes to her job, she’s very helpful to her customers and a great listener because you have to be a great listener in order to get what your customers need. She hates annoying, naggy people who try to get things for free and those who try to say that she doesn’t know how to help customers. It’s not her problem that you walked into the store with an attitude and you’re taking it out on her so she won’t help you. If you don’t respect her, she won’t help you. She doesn’t like working, per se, but she does love her job since it really is as easy as it seems and it allows her to buy the things that she wants and allows her to take care of herself. She’s rather simple that way.
One of the most interesting things about her is that she hates using a wand. She isn’t technically even supposed to have a wand considering the fact that she didn’t attend a wizarding school in the U.S. and you only get wands when you attend school due to laws imposed by the government. She thinks they’re a hindrance anyway and feels much more powerful when she can use her hands to perform magic. She doesn’t need to use it for her voodoo practices anyway so the wand really is just for show. She loves being able to feel the magic release from her body without the use of something like a wand to ‘control’ her magic.
Nico has a bit of an odd moral compass, odd to most anyway. She is a practitioner of voodoo and, like most practitioners, one of the key principles you’re taught is that you are your own master. If you feel you are wronged, punish. If you wish to thank someone, give gifts. She sees nothing wrong with using curses or hexes, putting spells on those that you believe deserve it. She loves the practice of voodoo and loves coming up with new spells and rituals to perform. She feels closest to her mother when she practices so she does so as often as she can for that reason and just because she loves the way that it makes her feel. Like she is in control of her life. She loves herself, who she has become and would never let someone change that.

history:
Nicolette Goudeau (born Remi Goudeau) was born in secret in the swamps of Natchitoches, Louisiana, U.S.A. Her birth was especially secretive because her father had been married to another woman at the time she was conceived. He was a selfish man and though he held no love for his wife, he was too embarrassed by her mother and ‘her crazy’ to leave his wife for her. Antoinette was not made for the political spotlight; she was a high profile psychic and voodoo expert. Even still, Antoinette wanted to be with her father. Antoinette hid the pregnancy from her father, using disillusionment charms knowing that Cherif would not be as happy about it as she. Because of her father’s high profile career, her mother gave birth to her at home with the help of her family.
Her childhood was a tumultuous one to begin with. Her father would continue to come over, using her mother in the worst ways. Her mother would always have her hide from him in hidden rooms in the house, not because she was ashamed of her but because she knew her father would be angry with the both of them. Her mother didn’t want to chance him trying to hurt her, physically or emotionally. One day her father came by on a visit her mother wasn’t expecting. He hadn’t contacted her beforehand, he showed up completely unannounced. Nicolette was four years old then, sitting in the living room playing with a bunch of toys when he stormed into the door. Sitting on the floor was a child that looked exactly like him and he knew. He was enraged. His mother came into the living room then. Nicolette doesn’t remember a lot from that day. She remembered there was a fight and then she remembers her father lying on the ground, unmoving, and her mother crying and angry. Because of her father’s position the police got involved. And because the police got involved, MACUSA had to get involved. The no-maj authorities found nothing, believing the death to be suspicious but unable to find any proof that the death had been a murder. It took MACUSA no time at all to figure out that her mother had murdered him. That was when they took her mother away and Nicolette never saw her again. She was forced to go live with her grandmother and she didn’t find out until she was older that her mother was executed by MACUSA.
Nicolette was assigned the sex of male at birth but even throughout her younger years she never identified with ‘masculine’ and ‘boy’ things. People inside and outside of her family often told her it was a phase. She always felt disconnected from her given name and confusingly uncomfortable when they referred to her as a boy. She didn’t understand the way that she was feeling until around the age of 13 when her grandmother told her what that feeling was and where it may be coming from. She confirmed to her grandmother then that she was a girl; that she felt like a girl and knew from the bottom of her heart that she was a girl. Her grandmother helped her from then on to transition her body to match who she knew she was.
Because of her parentage, her being the child of a state senator, Nico’s grandmother was forced to keep her in isolation. The death of the senator was national news and in order to not get Nico involved and pushed into the public eye, Nico was homeschooled. She’d shown signs of magical ability as a child as well and with her grandmother being her caretaker as well as a witch, her grandmother took control of all of her schooling, teaching her of practical things as well as how to control her magical ability. That included the practice of voodoo. It had always been a part of her childhood when her mother was alive so Nico had never seen the magic as problematic. She embraced her magical abilities and her grandmother’s voodoo teachings, being both a fast learner and a natural talent in both respects. Her grandmother raised her to be to be self-sufficient and wise. Her grandmother also eventually shared with her the true story of what happened to her mother and about her father. Nico was angry, hated her father and didn’t want anything to do with her father’s family even though her grandmother insisted to her that it wasn’t a good idea to get involved anyway. She promised herself that she would never put herself in the same position.
As Nico grew older, and in her transition began to look less like her father and more like her mother with each passing year, her grandmother began allowing her to work in her mother’s shop so she could cultivate a deeper love and better understanding for the craft. She loved it immediately, the interactions she got to have with the store’s patrons, being able to stock all manner of magical items, and even being able to make a few spelled and cursed items herself with her grandmother’s help made her fall in love with working in the store. It made her feel closer to her mother.
At the age of 32, in an effort to try and expand her horizons, Nicolette decided to move to the UK. She had dreams of opening her own voodoo shop, maybe even making it a franchise, and she didn’t want to encroach on her grandmother’s territory or the territory of any of the other voodoo witches that commanded Louisiana. She wanted to start somewhere fresh, where there weren’t any shops specifically geared towards voodoo practices. It wasn’t until she moved that she realized people did not view voodoo favorably. When she arrived, she easily found a place and settled down into a bit of what she deemed as her normal. It wasn’t until she went to the Ministry of Magic, something that she did begrudgingly, that she ran into any problems. They refused to provide her with a permit to open her store, basing it on their own ‘research’ of voodoo and stating that the magic too closely resembled what they called ‘dark magic’ for them to allow her to sell anything related to it, much less practice it. No matter how much she argued with them, they wouldn’t listen to her. She was promptly removed from the Ministry’s premises without a permit to open her shop. She was angry and felt defeated. How could they say such a thing about Voodoo? It wasn’t dark. It was self-preservative. It gave people the power to take their destiny in their own hands. It gave them tools to complete tasks they wanted, protect themselves, and punish those that had done them wrong if necessary. It was not light or dark, evil or good.
As much as she wanted to feel held back by them, she wouldn’t let that stop her. She would find a way to do what she wanted anyway. Because she was in desperate need for a job to live, she decided to do the next best thing, find a job at a different store. Anything would do really, she just liked being able to help customers. She checked all of the local wanted ads for help and found a store that would be perfect for her. Dystyl Phaelanges, while not a voodoo store per se, did sell bones and bone work. Anything they didn’t use, she knew she could use for her rituals and spell work. She was hired immediately to work and loved it. Her boss was nice enough and allowed her to buy any bones they didn’t use for cheap. She didn’t think anything could be more perfect.
After she got settled in her new job, she quickly began making a name for herself. Her customers loved her and would often come in and spend hours talking to her about their lives, things they needed, men that bothered them, or whatever they wished to divulge. With those she liked enough, she offered them solutions in the form of items she could make for them using their craft. She didn’t have a formal shop so the items were never traced back to her but word did spread to where, eventually, she had people requesting her services or items that would save them from their troubles. She didn’t trust everyone, of course, denying that she even offered the services or that such items existed. She didn’t want to be put into the spotlight of the government and get in trouble. Some people she had to vet first for months at time before she trusted them. She only offered the services to those she knew, those she trusted enough, mostly women. She could trust most women. That is how she became popular on what was known as the Wizarding Black Market.
At the death of Kingsley Shacklebolt, Nico didn’t really care. The cycle always went like that didn’t it? Government officials died somehow by means of corruption or by someone wanting to take over their seat. She wasn’t really surprised either way. When the attacks on Hogwarts happened, however, she was rather curious about this Elaine person and what her purpose of all of this was. Kids killing other kids seemed rather odd to her. When it came out out that Elaine was the suspected mastermind behind the blood purist group and that everything that had been happening so far was a part of some blood purity agenda, Nico had mixed feelings about it all. On one hand, she was only considered, what they would call, a halfblood with magic only coming from her mother’s side. She didn’t really care for some blood purist ideology; even being only half magic she knew that she was a powerful witch. On the other hand, she couldn’t help but respect a women who did what she believed in and Elaine was making waves. She was making her name known and Nico couldn’t help but respect a women who went after what they wanted.
It wasn't even a few months later that she noticed. It was one or two days at first. It was one or two women at first too. They would come into the store, hover around the door and look at the wares they had in stock. And Nico, being the customer service expert that she was, would come up and talk to women. It would start as chit chat about the items they had in stock but then the women would move on to ask her more personal questions. Questions about magic in general. Then questions about more hidden forms of magic. Nico denied, of course, knowing what they were talking about but she knew something was... off... about the women. They were different but they held a similar aura about them. It was just something she sensed. This went on for a few months and Nico became more suspicious. Until one day, a woman with the same air about her came into the store. This time, she didn't pretend to look at the store's stock. She didn't say anything. She approached the counter, far away from the view of the windows in the shop, and with a wave of her wand, her disguise fell away. Nico didn't even have to guess at who she was. She's seen the posters. Elaine Dupree stood in front of her, powerful, commanding. Elaine told her that she had been impressed with her work and her skill; she had heard about the items she'd created for people using her voodoo practices and she wanted to procure her work for herself. The fact that Nico could sense that something had been off with her disguises had impressed her. Nico had found herself impressed with the young witch as well. She exuded such power, she had a lot of potential and Nico wanted to know what she was going to do with it. That was when Elaine requested that she joined her cause, that the Purifiers needed someone with her skill. Nico didn't care for the cause, but she couldn't say no without seeing if Elaine could turn her potential into results. Nico agreed to join her.
Nico doesn’t really know a whole lot about Hogwarts accept what she’s heard from her customers and their talks of their children going to the school, so at the announcement of the Triwizard Tournament, she didn’t really know much about it nor care about it. She didn’t quite understand the hype of the tournament and never dreamed of attending the tasks, more than likely because she had to work during them which was perfectly okay with her. She doesn’t really care for children much, minus the ones in her family, so concerning herself with the ongoings of them didn’t really appeal to her. She just wants to continue working and practicing her craft in peace while hoping that one day she’ll be able to own her own stores.
