@dominic It was her birthday, and Cara was in need of her Dominic. She hadn’t seen her personal sounding board since she had graduated, and while her siblings could take the brunt of it, Dominic could take it all without batting an eye. Sometimes she wondered if he even cared in the first place, but then he always responded with exactly what she wanted to hear. Basically he did the job that she wanted him too, and that was why she kept him around. At least that was what she had always convinced herself of. In reality, while she treated him like her toy, she knew he was still a person and that he either felt obligated to answer in the manner she wanted him to, or was actually just the kind of person that liked to boost her ego. She knew there was a difference in those two things and was starting to hope that it was neither. The realization at the end of the year, and then following graduation, that she only had a few friends was tormenting her. She couldn’t always rely on Dominic and Adonia to tell her what she wanted them to, and Susan and Diana were busy with work. Obviously it was partially her fault for isolating herself and going out of her way to be an absolute bitch to people at times, but there should have been more people than her siblings and those three, right?
So that was why she got ahold of Dominic and was physically dragging him to the movies. They hadn’t done this kind of thing in a long time, probably because he had been a loser and disappeared at the end of the fall term and wouldn’t respond over winter break. Now she had unlimited time because her career was going absolutely nowhere, and she was sure he could entertain her with his presence for a few hours, especially on her birthday. This would be better than dealing with family the entire day. Diana could do that. That was kind of the good thing with having a twin. She didn’t always need to be there for everything when her clone could stand in for her and vice-versa. They would discuss everything later on anyways. Family politics aside, Cara was stood out in front of the movie theater craning her neck to look over the small crowd that was around her to see where Dominic was.

Dominic was really excited about this. He was sure he would see Diana later, but for now it was time to be with Cara. He and Di hadn't made official plans but they always found their way to each other, special on special occasions. Diana had been.. strange for the last few months. Especially since the ship and carriage exploded. He wasn't sure why she cared so much, she was one of the Purifiers too. But something was really weighing on her, he just didn't know the details. Dominic arrived at the theater two minutes later than the planned time, just to make Cara squirm a little. She didn't have to know that was the reason why, of course. When he saw her through the people, he felt a smile grow on his face. A genuine one. It really, really was good to see her. As much as he was pretending with her, he liked her. He wouldn't pretend and spend so much time with someone if he didn't at least get something out of it. He got amusement, sure, but he also got a pretty girl who wanted his attention. There really wasn't much to lose with this friendship. He waved an arm, eve though he didn't really need to. He could see over most of the crowd anyway. He reached her and grinned, "hey, old lady. How does it feel to be an adult?" he asked his tone hinting at jealousy. cara june bainbridge

@dominic While the hand waving in her direction could have been from practically anyone, Cara still noticed it out of the corner of her eye. It was one of those things that was hard to avoid once her brain was telling her to look at it. She didn’t think Dominic would do that, though they were in the muggle public so anything was possible out here. At school he surely wouldn’t be so gung-ho about getting her attention. Or would he? She was always the one seeking him out to unload her problems, so it was weird having him find her this time. Of course the person attached to the arm was him, go figure, and Cara half-raised her own arm to wave him over despite it already looking like he knew where she was. “Oh god, don’t remind me,” Cara groaned at his joke about her being an adult. “I’m not ready to do this adult thing Dominic. Don’t waste your time on stupid things next year.” She felt like that was a sufficient warning for him. He could do with it what he wanted too. Her own final few months had been spent realizing that all the work she had been putting into school really didn’t matter for what she wanted to do, and was now regretting it.
Stepping to his side, she looped her arm through his and started pushing through the crowd towards the doors of the theater. “So I was kind of impatient and already bought the tickets,” she admitted, pulling her phone out of her pocket to show him. “Did you know they do these things digitally? I always assumed we needed the paper versions. Feel like we miss so much while at school…”

Cara told him not to remind her, groaning, and Dominic laughed aloud. She said she wasn't ready to 'do this adult thing' and for him not to waste his time on stupid things next year. He shrugged, "well, you won't be there so I'll just use my time instead of waste it," he teased. He raised a hand to ruffle the hair on the top of her head, "don't worry, I never waste my time," he added. Then she linked her arm with his and he let her lead. He always let her lead. It was a joke, at the beginning, but it was always kind of nice to let someone else take the lead. She was good at it, so he could just follow along easily. She said she bought the tickets and he looked at her phone, nodding. He didn't have his own cell phone. It was kind of a protest, really... his brother hand one, going to muggle school and all, but Dominic had refused his parents offer. "Yeah, muggles do a lot of things digitally now," he explained, remembering some stuff Alex had told him over the years about it. "Alex barely ever reads books anymore," he rolled his eyes, "it's insane. Like, it's all on that," he pointed at her phone. cara june bainbridge

@dominic “Stop! It’s not funny,” she laughed along with him. It really wasn’t though. The way that years were starting to blend together wasn’t exactly an enticing sign for the future. They weren’t even in their twenties yet and it was already shaping up to be a speedy trip through life. Dominic added that she wouldn’t be at school so he wouldn’t be wasting his time, patting her head at the same time for good measure. All she could do was stare at him, her mouth hanging open. “You’re rude, you know that?” she said, shaking her head and trying to stop the last few laughs from coming out. She failed at that though, the laughs escaping and her head falling onto his shoulder as they walked. Having an escort was nice. It made her feel important and necessary. A lot of the time she felt like people looked at her and thought her ideas on how to do things were stupid. Dominic wasn’t that way though, so she had to treat him better than the rest. “Good. Because I don’t like to waste my time either.”
She felt Dominic look down at her phone as they walked towards the theater, automatically moving the screen closer to his face so that he could see it better. He agreed that it was wild that muggles did everything with their phones and things now, and how his brother read books on them now too, substituting paper copies for the digital ones. Cara shook her head at that. It hurt her soul a little to know that her precious books were being replaced by silly muggles. As much as she enjoyed muggle things, that part she hated more than anything else. “I don’t understand that,” she started, referring to the replacement of books with phones. “The whole point of reading a book is to be able to turn the pages, not knowing what will be on the next one. Pressing a button on a phone to go to the next page is silly,” Cara huffed. “And it can’t be good for your eyes to be staring at one of those things all day.”

She said that he wasn't being funny, talking about wasting time, and her laugh was a nice sound along with it. It was always nice when she laughed and he knew he was the cause, but it also made him feel weird inside. Like, getting positive emotions from people was a strange feeling. Then she said he was rude, shaking her head and still laughing and he nodded. He stopped his nod when her head rested on his shoulder and he casually kissed the top of her head, then continued on. He had just been pretending for so long that it was easy to be with her like this. It almost didn't feel like pretending. Almost. "Great. No time wasted with us. Deal," well, having fun wasn't wasting time, right? He leaned back slightly as she held the phone to his face but then let his eyes focus on it. Freaking weird devices. She said she didn't understand reading digitally, talking about turning the pages and the difference between. "Yeah, but his argument is that you can access anything without having to break your back by carrying it or something dumb like that. I can't deal with it," he looked away from the phone. "Speaking of screens," he nodded up toward the theater. cara june bainbridge

@dominic He kissed the top of her head. Why did he do that? What did it mean? Cara felt her heartbeat sky-rocket immediately and her face start to burn. Good thing he couldn’t see that with her head on his shoulder as they walked. This was the same feeling she had with Adonia. The thing she couldn’t understand at all, or why it happened in the first place. Obviously she knew it was some sort of lust or whatever, but this was Dominic! He was hers. She was supposed to mess with him and tease him. Even if he was he was playing around, it should have felt like he was joking, and maybe he was. Her brain was setting off different signals this time though, and she held onto his arm a little tighter than she meant to, only managing to nod at his agreement to not waste time at all. There was something clearly wrong with her, and she needed to figure it out. This had never happened with him before, and now of all times was odd. Plenty of occasions where she would sprawl out on him because he was basically her extended lounge, and nothing would come of it. Something about this though…
She took the opportunity to put her phone back into her pocket as Dominic looked away from it as a welcome distraction. Talking about the behavior of muggles and their books was something she could use to get her thoughts back in order. “Laziness,” she sighed. “Like I said, books are part of the experience just as much as going to a library or bookstore. Guess it means I get a quieter store to walk around in then, I suppose.” Dominic motioned to the theater as they approached and Cara finally pulled her head off of his shoulder so that she could push the door open. Stepping inside, her phone came back out for when they got to the ticket checker person. There had to be a better name for that job, right? “Any snacks for you?” she asked, gazing up at the screens projecting all of the muggle junk food being offered. Popcorn always worked for her.

She brought up laziness, which made sense. He agreed that going to the library or bookstore was a part of the book experience. He loved books. She knew that. He nodded, a lot, maybe too much, and then shook his head as she said she would get a quieter store to walk around in since people didn't frequent them. "That sounds both lovely and heartbreaking," he said, his head still shaking a little. Then she lifted her head from his shoulder as they reached the theater, and his shoulder felt a tad... cold. She opened the door and he stepped in with her, letting her handle the whole ticket fiasco. "Uh... popcorn. And something chocolate," she shrugged, "you can decide, I'll pay," he moved his arm to her waist and wrapped around it, pulling her into the snack line. Once there, he released her waist in order to pull his wallet out of his pocket and start sifting through it for the muggle money his parents had given him. They always had some lying around, now that Alex was fully embracing the muggle world and integrating into it. He shuddered at the thought of the Purifiers finding out about his brother and how Alex preferred muggles over magic. He didn't realize that he had actually, physically, literally shuddered right there in line with Cara. cara june bainbridge

@dominic Bookstores without people was heartbreaking indeed. Even though she got annoyed when people buzzed around her in bookstores, it was even worse when no one was there. In a way, total silence and solace was worse when it was all due to a lack of interest. Cara preferred being bothered when it meant she could have input or feel important for having been disturbed. Absence of people meant she couldn’t yell or put anyone in their place. That wasn’t fun. “Definitely,” she agreed after a few seconds of thinking it over. “I wish I could have one without the other, but that seems impossible,” she shrugged. “Guess I’ll just write something that will bring people back to the stores. Can’t be too hard.” Like hell it wasn’t hard. If writing a novel was easy, she would have done it by now, or should have been working on it. Instead she was getting all giddy over spending time with Dominic. Not that there was anything wrong with that.
Ticket situation finished, next came snacks. Thankfully Dominic said popcorn, because that was going to be her first selection as well. It would have been a waste of money to get a bunch of different things if they couldn’t agree on at least one. Popcorn solved that problem. Dominic was placing the decision on her though and as she stared blankly up at the screen above the order area, she felt his hand on her waist, gently pulling her back towards him in the line. Her body acted without her realizing, back immediately straightening out with a small jolt. He let go once she was back next to him in line, and Cara couldn’t bring herself to look up at him, instead keeping her eyes trained on the selection of food before them. Swallowing to get rid of the weird nervous feeling (as if that would work), she realized she still needed to choose what to get. “Thanks,” her voice sounding quieter, even if it wasn’t. “Popcorn then. And some of those chocolate bars.” Cara pointed at the glass display, not being specific about which candy bars, just making sure to nod her head whenever the cashier hovered their hand over the ones she wanted. Once everything was on the counter and the popcorn added to it, she scooped up the bucket and waited for Dominic to pay.

She agreed, saying that she wished she could have it both ways when it came to the bookstores. Then she said she would just have to write something that would bring people back to the stores. "Would you not release it digitally? I mean, if you're only writing it for... our school demographic then I guess paper is the only way," he digressed. She said it couldn't be too hard and he knew better, but he wasn't going to tell her that. She should believe in herself if she wanted to actually get anything done, right? She wasn't looking at him and her voice was soft, and for a second he wondered why. But then he figured it was because he kept touching her and pulling her close. They'd always been close, but he was... playing it up a little more today. Maybe not entirely playing, but he wasn't sure. He honestly wasn't sure about any of that sort of thing right now. Still, it was nice to be liked, and he liked her well enough. She spoke softly in thanks when he said he'd pay, and then said what she wanted and the cashier got the popcorn ready and Dominic pointed out some chocolate bars. "Great choice, hope you'll share," he chuckled. He paid, taking the candy as she grabbed the popcorn. Immediately his hand was back at her waist as they approached the ticket taker. He handed both tickets over and they were told where to go, and Dom led the way there. "Oh sweet, the seats have arm rests that go up so you can snuggle when you get scared," he joked. cara june bainbridge

@dominic Release her work digitally? He had a point, but Cara still wasn’t sure what the positives of that would be. On one hand, Dominic was right: paper was the only way to go if she was releasing it only to the magical crowd. She also had a more sure success with something that resonated with magical kids than with muggles. Her entire life was based on magic, and while she enjoyed times like this, where she could pretend to be a normal human being without magic strings attached, that was still who she was. Those were the decisions she would have to make in the coming months while planning everything out for her novel, or whatever this thing was going to become. “I haven’t decided yet on that…” she sighed. Nothing was for sure right now. If she managed to come up with something that worked for both worlds, then she was a genius. Hitting it big with one side would mean isolating herself from potential fans on the other side. All of this sucked, and all Cara wanted to do was write a story that people would be interested in and had access to. Having her creation shoved into the back of a magical bookstore, surrounded by dusty remnants of fiction authors of days past did not sound enticing to her, but neither did having to deal with muggle editorial companies.
“Only if you ask politely, Dominic,” she raised an eyebrow at him teasingly. If they weren’t surrounded by so many muggles, she probably would have told him to get down on the ground and kiss her feet before getting a chocolate bar, or something equally stupid like that. But she didn’t feel like being a nuisance today, and he was already being nice to her as it was. “But I suppose I can share some of it with you,” she shrugged. Her body didn’t react as nearly as harshly as it did the first time Dominic put his hand on her waist, but it certainly hadn’t gotten used to it yet. None of this made sense still – she could hold onto him all she wanted to, and the second he started it, it was completely different. Cara jabbed him slightly in the side with her elbow at his comment as they approached their seats. “Push your luck and I’ll keep the arm rest down the entire time,” she added before throwing herself down into one of the chairs. “So sit down, shut-up, and eat your popcorn, Dippet. Maybe you’ll get lucky if I feel like it,” Cara joked, leaving the arm rest up as she waited for the movie to begin.
