ELI WOBBLED BACKWARDS AS SHE PUSHED HIM. He was starting to see those minute hesitations. Like she thought he was serious, or something. Which he definitely wasn't. Why would he ever be serious about 'destroying' someone? But, she recovered well and he was quick to change his line of thought for his own secret.
Anything silly and frivolous would be well known about Eli. He didn't hold back in that respect. And so he delved deeper. Something that he was a little insecure about, and that he didn't often willingly share. "Well, I'm from California..." He said with a dry laugh. "So everyone just assumes you love the beach." Shaking his head, Eli drummed his fingers on his knees. "Nothing happened, exactly, I think I just... don't like the idea of drowning."
He thought about all the times he'd been swimming. At lake houses, pools. It always started fine, good even, and then escalated as soon as he had to peddle his feet. "It's like I can't bear the idea of holding my breath..." His heart fluttered at the voicing of it. "Like the moment my head is under I'm gonna get sucked down or-"
There was a shuffling and then the creak of a door opening up. Jeanne walked back in to the wing with her head down, a bottle clutched in one hand. Eli straightened his spine, painting a smile back on his face. "Jeanne!" He called, a little bit pleased to draw the attention from himself. "What took you so long, huh?" Jeanne looked up, her brows furrowing suspiciously as she eyed them both on the mussed up hospital bed.
"To be continued..." Eli muttered to Ashley, ducking his head a little before he swung his legs off and stood. "Sorry, you know me..." He said, turning to pretend to straighten the sheets. "Making myself at home, as usual."

Ashley listened intently as Eli explained. She wanted to know more about Eli and was kind of proud that he was telling her something so personal. Did this mean he trusted her? After being with her for half an hour or so? It was a new feeling, but she liked it. She nodded as he said that nothing happened. That was good. She was glad that he hadn’t almost died or something. He deserved better than that. ”I don’t either,” she said. She was pretty sure no one liked the idea of drowning, but she didn’t want to say that. Ashley expected him to end there, but after a moment he started expanding a bit more and she started to feel bad. What if he didn’t really want to tell her all of this? She started to reach forward to touch his arm, when she heard a door opening. She pulled back, feeling self-conscious again. Then she recognized the healer and exhaled in relief, smiling when Eli took charge again. Jeanne was looking at the two of them with narrowed eyes. Eli kept on talking, and Ashley rose to her feet, stepping closer to the Healer and eyeing the bottle in her hand, the pounding in her head taking precedence again. It was interesting how talking with Eli was such a good distraction. ”Mm-hmm, sure,” Jeanne answered, still looking at Eli. ”Remind me again why you’re here?” Then she seemed to see Ashley and smiled, holding out the bottle. ”Here you go, honey. Come back if that doesn’t help, all right?” Ashley nodded, but didn’t look at Eli. All of a sudden she felt extremely embarrassed. He knew why they were here, but she’d never actually taken her potion in front of anyone before. Her stomach rolled and clenched as she looked up to see Jeanne watching her. ”I will,” she mumbled since the lady was still watching her, and then she turned to the door. She gestured with her hand that Eli should join her, but she couldn’t turn around to see if he did. She was an idiot. Elijah Theron Fleming

THERE WASN'T A MOMENT WHERE ELI THOUGHT that Ashley might use his secret against him. He'd simply told her because it felt appropriate. The first thing to pop in to his head. He wasn't the type to consider something as cunning as an ulterior motive. And perhaps that was naive of him, but he didn't quite consider that either. Ashley had been fun, but so hesitant with everything she said or he did. He wanted her to feel comfortable, and for him that meant revealing something personal.
The arrival of Jeanne interrupted them. Tearing Eli's attention away and diverting his intentions until he was standing, pretending to straighten the blankets with a smile of manufactured innocence. "To keep Ash company, of course." He declared, curling an arm around Ashley's shoulders to give them a brief and encouraging squeeze before he let go. Jeanne wasn't at all entertained. Simply handing Ashley her bottle of relief with the kind of sweetness that the Healer appeared to have for everyone but Eli.
Rocking on his feet, Eli was completely oblivious to Ashley's inner turmoil as he followed close behind her to the door. For him, there was no question of it. However, when they were both back out in the hallway it was something of a different story. He saw the tension in her shoulders. The thud of the door behind them drawing his full attention back to her. The bottle gripped tight in her hand. If she was in pain, why hadn't she taken it already? And then it hit him. Maybe she didn't want to take it while he was there.
"Uh... I can go, if you want?" He said, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. "My alibi is probably pretty secure now." He gave a huffing laugh, not meaning it as shallowly as it appeared. He lifted his hand slightly to gesture toward the bottle in her hand. "Suppose you want to take that in your dorm, huh?" Their quarters weren't too far apart, but Eli didn't want to hang around if she was tired of it. And, as if predicting this thought, the bells rang out all around them. He looked up, as if he could see the noise. "Guess that's our cue..."

Eli answered Jeanne's question, giving Ashley a side hug in the process and she smiled. She wasn't really used to people touching her, since none of her friends were the touchy-feely type. Honestly, Ash wasn't either, but at this moment it felt nice and natural and she wondered if maybe she would like hugs if people she was comfortable around offered them, but none of her friends were that way. Then they were alone again, outside the hospital wing and her back was to him. There was silence for a moment and then he was saying he could go, if she wanted him to. She turned around, a little faster than she meant to. Her eyes were wide as she bit her lip, trying to decide what she wanted to say. She should tell him to go. She felt uncomfortable with someone knowing her weakness, but he already knew. Whether or not he watched her take the potion, he knew about her headaches and knew that she got a potion to help. She started shaking her head, but he mentioned how she'd want to take the potion in her dorm. Ashley hesitated, feeling more conflicted than she'd felt in a while. She liked spending time with Eli, but maybe he was looking for an out. Maybe he wanted to go do things with his real friends. Still, she found herself saying, "No, you don't have to-" the bells interrupted her and she froze. People were getting out of class now and some would be heading this way. She wanted to spend more time with him, maybe finish that conversation from earlier, but she also didn't want to be seen with him. She didn't know how her friends would react and that thought kind of scared her. She frowned and looked at the ground, feeling deflated now. "I guess so," she muttered unwillingly. Then she glanced up, feeling strangely anxious. "I'll see you around though, right?" Ash was sure she would, since she'd actually recognize him when she saw him now, but she didn't know what else to say. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI WAS SHIFTING IN PLACE NERVOUSLY, wondering if maybe he'd stepped too far. He thought back to when they'd first began talking in the hallway. If he'd pushed himself on her. He'd done it before. Stuck around when he was unwanted. Not everyone loved the chatty types, and Eli just happened to have a lot to say. He couldn't think of a time when she'd shied away from him, or gave him any indication that she wanted to be alone. Until now.
So unsure, Eli was inclined to disbelieve her rushed denial, but it was cut off by the bells. The halls were quick to fill. Chatter filling the heavy silence between them. Eli watched her falter, lost for words. She looked around the hallways and he didn't think it was because she was with him. He thought it was because of the bottle in her hand. So, when she dismissed herself, he didn't feel anything beyond a mild disappointment.
"Yeah... definitely," He smiled, as if it were so obvious that they would. "Feel better," He said, knuckling her shoulder reassuringly before he watched her melt in to the crowd. "What a weird day..." He mumbled under his breath, watching her until she melted in the crowd. As faceless as she'd been before now. Though her image stayed with him nonetheless.
