The train platform was as crowded as Max had ever seen it. It made sense, given all of the transfer students from Ilvermorny, but it was difficult to navigate through the masses of people without accidentally bumping into someone or another with her trolley.
“Mum, have you seen Quinn?!”
Notwithstanding that it was practically impossible to pick out anyone, Max continued to look for the smaller blonde girl as she went along. It had been a while since she had last seen the Ravenclaw, but she had been hoping to sit with her on the train and needed to break the news to her that she wouldn’t be able to.
“Maxima, there must be hundreds of people here right now—”
“I can’t board the train without telling her I got the badge!” she added frantically. “The badge,” of course, was the prefect’s badge that she had nearly mistaken for another donation to the relief fund before she’d seen the Hogwarts crest on the envelope. She had been certain that Hogwarts had been mistaken, too, in giving that honor to her. Perhaps she wasn’t the very last person who was deserving of it, but Max didn’t think that she would have been anyone’s first choice.
She had toyed with the badge before it had finally set in that it was hers, though she had pricked herself on the pin once in that process hard enough to draw blood. That was what had finally prompted her to break the news to her mother and stepfather, who hadn’t been overzealous about it until they’d let it slip at dinner. Then, the twins had found out, and that had been the end of any hope in Maxima’s mind that she could keep the news mostly to herself, still unconvinced that it was even meant to be hers.
When she boarded the train, still without any sight of Quinn, Max kept her fingers crossed that she would be able to catch a glimpse of the Ravenclaw, at least. Even if all she could do to keep from damaging their friendship was to mouth an apology out the window to her, that was better than nothing. Maybe she would get lucky enough that she would be able to say a quick hello while patrolling the train, but she didn’t want to bet on it.
Making her way into the compartment, Max nearly stumbled in her shock, eliciting a discontented meow from her cat, Oscar. Already there was none other than Quinn Price. Encumbered by the cat in her arms, she wasn’t sure what to do in her state of disbelief, other than to remain rooted where she stood.
“You got it, too?” Max gasped as soon as she could feel the words returning to her. Unless one or the other of them was in the wrong place, Quinn must have been made a prefect for Ravenclaw House.
