THE HUFFLEPUFF COMMON ROOM WAS embarrassingly easy to break in to, Jimmie thought. Though she supposed it wasn't exactly breaking in when you were always welcome. The 'Puff's tended to be like that. It wasn't like Slytherin, which seemed locked up tighter than Azkaban. Though she'd never broken in before. Or Ravenclaw, which may well ask you to recite PI in to the thousandth degree if it so pleased. So really, was she breaking any rules?
Entering the little cubbyhole, Jimmie always felt a little claustrophobic, like the ceiling might cave in. But, she was a woman on a mission. And though she'd questioned her friend on multiple occasions of why it was the way it was, she received no quick answer. She gave the main room a cursory once over, found Peyton nowhere to be seen, and immediately let herself up and in to the ladies dorms. Without much thought at all. She already knew that Peyton was in the same room as last year, so why mess around?
"Hide your contraband!" Jimmie yelled as she knocked once and then threw open the door to the shared dorm. She didn't see Peyton at first, merely showed her teeth to a girl who'd jumped at her entrance and wiggled her fingers in greetings. "Don't worry, just me..." And then she crossed the room and promptly threw herself on the bed with Peyton's things scattered around. Namely, a badly knit scarf hanging from the bedpost. A gift Jimmie had given her their second year, and which she'd kept. Jimmie loved the fact, though she didn't know why. It truly was a hideous piece of fabric.

first week of september Being back at Hogwarts, it was a thrill for the young blonde witch; it also helped that she was a prefect this term. It felt nice; it felt empowering, though she knew she wouldn’t let it go to her head like others out there probably would. She also missed her little hole in the wall that was the Hufflepuff location, their tiny dorm rooms that were filled with yellow and had enough room for a ton of girls. It always surprised her about that, as if that small space was nothing in comparison to the group of girls’ that lived there. But that was magic for you, and she adored it. There had been a few girls in the dorm room when Peyton had left to use the restrooms, though she did have time to pour some things on her bed and disappear from the room. She didn’t disappear for long, but by the time she returned to the dorm room, her bed was being occupied, and not by another Hufflepuff. It was the familiar face of Jimmie Blishwick, one of her many friends within Hogwarts. She also happened to be the daughter of the matchmaker, Jimbo Blishwick. “Jimmie!” she exclaimed as she drew closer to her bed, a huge grin on her face. “Just the girl I wanted to see,” she said as she threw herself down onto the bed and landed next to Jimmie herself, “How did you get in here?” she questioned with a small laugh.

JIMMIE WAS LOUNGING ON PEYTON'S BED, ONE hand supporting her head and the other playing with a loose thread on the duvet. She had intended only to wait, but the face of another student had surprised her. 'New', her mind said, and she was already sitting up, questions pouring out of her mouth. How did she like Hogwarts? Was Hufflepuff accommodating? The girl stood like a deer in the headlights.
Peyton's return swiftly drew Jimmie's attention from the poor stranger, whose name Jimmie hadn't even gotten around to getting. Whipping her head around, Jimmie's face stretched in to a smile. "Peys!" She exclaimed. Jimmie hadn't had a chance to chat with her friend since their return. With Prefect duties, buddying and preparing for classes. Well, she had been swamped. But, Jimmie would always make time for her friends.
Attention diverted, Jimmie bounced around on the bed a little to get comfortable. It was as she did this that Peyton inquired of her arrival. Jimmie mustered a scoff, hair crimped in one hand. "Like it's hard?" She reached a hand over and tapped a beat on Peyton's arm. "Helga Hufflpuff," She sang, drawing the syllables with her tapping finger. "It's like you want unwanted visitors, or something."
Jimmie was smirking as she drew her hand away, rolling on her stomach with her legs bent in the air. She gathered an armful of Peyton's fluffy duvet to lay her chin on. "Tell me about your summer." She said, with open and curious eyes. Jimmie could often be blunt, but she loved hearing other people's stories. "And then maybe I'll tell you about mine," She conceded, rolling her cheek against Peyton's soft comforter.

Peyton hadn’t realized that she was walking into a conversation, at least, until she noticed a young new student looking between them before dashing off in another direction. Poor girl, she thought to herself – perhaps she had just saved the new person from the blunt force that was Jimmie Blishwick. She watched as her friend moved around, practically bouncing on the bed, as she grew comfortable and began to speak. Peyton laughed, shaking her head, “That’s because the Hufflepuff’s don’t think anyone is stupid enough to break in,” she said with a small smirk upon her lips. She hadn’t called Jimmie stupid, she was sure the girl knew that, but it was the truth. They were less likely to get unwanted people coming in, from figuring out the password of simplicity, because they didn’t think people would just come in. It was then, as Jimmie finally grew comfortable on her duvet to her chin that she questioned about Peyton’s summer. The two had barely spoken, mostly because between Peyton’s family traveling on vacation and Jimmie being busy as well, the two of them only were able to owl a few times. Come to think about it, Peyton only remembered talking about them both becoming prefects this coming term, and that being the last she heard of her friend. She began to giggle, “Well—we went on vacation, nothing too special, but it was fun. We even came home in time for your dad’s whole blind dating thing, and I got paired with this really—really nice guy,” she said with a sigh as she fell backward on the bed at an angle, giving herself enough room that she didn’t slam into Jimmie. She looked at the ceiling dreamily, “His name is Daniel, you guys are in the same house...though he’s older than us. We went to the maze, and then he bought me butterbeer,” she said with a smile as she remembered the date.

JIMMIE'S FACE TWISTED IN DISAGREEMENT, LIPS pinching and brows furrowing. "Yeah right..." She snorted, hand propping her head up. "It's not breaking in if you know the password, Peys." She said with a shake of her head. At least it didn't feel like she'd broken in at all. She'd simply dropped by for a visit without knocking. It was an entirely different, completely legal thing. Show her the rule book that said it was something else and she might consider apologising.
Shifting for a more comfortable, long term position, Jimmie eagerly listened as Peyton revealed they'd gone off on holiday. The Blishwick's didn't do abroad in the summer. It could be there busiest season, if done correctly. They had to stay at home base and man the fort. Much to Jimmie's eternal chagrin. As if spurred by her own thoughts, Peyton began speaking of just the subject.
Groaning, Jimmie went limp, flopping her head in to the duvet face first. "Don't start." She grumbled, her words muffled by a mouthful of cotton before she lifted her head in defeat of being heard. "I don't know why you'd waste your time," Jimmie said. As if the entire ceremony hadn't in a roundabout way helped pay for the very comfortable, tailored robes she currently owned.
After a moment of sustained and bitter scowling, Jimmie huffed and propped her chin up on her hands. "Tell me what he was like then." Because Peyton hadn't led with that and Jimmie was incredibly sceptical, but as curious as always.

Peyton wrinkled her nose teasingly, shaking her head before letting out a sigh and rolling her eyes. “I guess you’re right,” she breathed out in a fake defeated voice, she didn’t care if Jimmie had broken in or had gotten in for knowing the password, it was fun being able to hang out with a friend in your common room. Peyton, however, no matter how smart she was probably would never be able to get into the Gryffindor common rooms, that would be like breaking into Gringotts. However, the playful demeanor of Jimmie Blishwick disappeared the moment Peyton mentioned her father’s company and the blind date she had gone on. She shrugged sheepishly, “I don’t know—I thought it’d be fun. And I met a great guy; he was nice.” she said with a smile on her face. And after a moment of Jimmie’s scowling and Peyton’s pouting, the girl gave a huff and gave into her antics. Peyton smiled brightly as Jimmie asked about him, “Well he’s cute, his name is Daniel, and he’s in your house,” she said with a smile. “He was an Ilvermorny transfer before it became a thing, and he was charming and funny. He told a lot of jokes, and then he offered to buy me butterbeer as a prize for completing the maze we went through. He was just nice, and I hope he and I can be friends if it doesn’t turn romantic or anything,” she said with a bright smile. Peyton was excited and was a bit sad that she had yet to run into Daniel.

IT WAS QUITE IRONIC, JIMMIE WAS SURE, THAT she detested the notion of love so much while her father owned perhaps the largest, most successful, match-making business in the wizarding community in the UK. Or, perhaps it was the catalyst. She'd always thought there was something rather defunct about paying to be told who you should love. So, she really couldn't be blamed for her jaded opinions.
"They're always 'nice'," Jimmie said in to the duvet, the fabric warm with her breath as she lifted her head, eyes narrowed slightly. "Until they're not." She thought it was all a bit of a fallacy. That dating just meant painting a different face, for another's benefit no doubt. Absolutely ridiculous. Though, she still loved her friend, and so she appeased her own traitorous curiosity and her innate desire to please Peyton by buying in.
Humming under her breath, Jimmie lifted her legs, crossing them with a light swing. "Daniel..." She said suspiciously, seeming to taste the name. "Sounds like a bit of a tosser, anyways. Probably better off just friends." She was smirking slightly. "Only joking..." She added for Peyton's benefit, rolling on to her side and propping her head up. She fiddled absently with the hem of her robes, a handful of icy blonde hair propping her at the neck as she considered her friend sharply.
"Boy's who tell too many jokes are hiding something," Jimmie said snootily, though she was smiling. "Though the Ilvermorny part might be enough to redeem him." With a considering eye, Jimmie thought back to her failure of an interview. "I thought I'd struck story gold when they buddied me up with one, but that was a big waste." She sniffed, rolling her eyes largely. "He's Canadian, AND he was homeschooled."
Scratching at her head slightly, she snorted. "Of all the transfers, they pair me with someone who probably knows less about Ilvermorny than me." Scooting ever closer, Jimmie made a show of batting her eyes at her friend. "You couldn't score me a little interview with your lover boy, could you?" Lifting her lips until they curled back from her teeth, she rumpled the blankets under her feet until she was practically on her friends lap. "Pretty please?"

Peyton semi-rolled her eyes as her friend told her that boys were always nice until they weren’t. She didn’t want to believe that, but maybe she was right. She internally shook her head, just because Jimmie was bitter towards guys didn’t mean Peyton had to be. Though if things turned sour, she knew that Jimmie would be the person to run to. The conversation quickly turned into Jimmie giving her opinions, a few jokes here and there, but she knew that wasn’t true. Jimmie felt this way, but Peyton wouldn’t let that bring her down. Peyton laughed as her friend complained about being buddied up with someone, except for the fact that he was from Canada and didn’t even attend Ilvermorny. “Sounds like you got the short end of the stick there Jim,” she said jokingly, with her laughter. And then came the begging of Miss Jimmie Blishwick, quickly she began tapping her chin and frowning. “I don’t know Jim…he might act nice until he isn’t towards you,” she said in a teasing tone. She rolled her eyes in amusement, “I’ll bring up that you want to meet him, but I’ll leave it up to him to decide if he wants to or not. Deal?” she questioned with a raised eyebrow.

JIMMIE KNEW SHE AND PEYTON DIDN'T SHARE the same opinions on boys and romance, but that didn't stop her from trying to share her wisdom. Or, so she thought. Peyton was sweet, too sweet in Jimmie's humble opinions. And boys just... weren't. She needed to look out for her and that meant vetting any and all dirtbags who took a shine to her.
"I always get the short end of the stick..." Jimmie whined, face pouted. This wasn't exactly true, but she was feeling a little theatrical. She had taken a whole four months of drama before. Though she pulled out her best puppy dog eyes when the prospect of her friend came around. "I can handle him," She said confidently, her smirk arrogant. "Plus, I don't wanna date him so I'll be fine." She eyed her friend seriously, as if she were to disagree. Unfolding one of her hands, though, she easily shook hands with her friend. "Deal." It was a start at least.

Peyton easily made friends, that much was certain about the bubbly blonde Hufflepuff student. Sometimes her friends were the complete opposite of herself and other times they fit her personality perfectly. Jimmie was not one of those people, their nature and way of thinking sometimes clashed, but that added an element of fun to their relationship. It was Jimmie that kept her level-headed when it came to lovey-dovey stuff and helped her put one toe into the water when it came to it. Crushes, the likes were always running past Jimmie before she fell head first into the water and drowned in heartbreak. That was what made her so different from her father, he helped people find love, and she helped them realize that some people are weeds you have to pluck before you get to the actual flower. She might not always see it as such, especially with her small crush on the dashing Daniel, but a part of her did – she just hoped that Daniel wasn’t a weed. A giggle left the blonde’s pale pink lips, shaking her head in amusement at her dear friend. “That’s a lie…you don’t always get the short end of the stick. It’s just…more likely to happen to you than others,” she said, biting her lip gently. She just contradicted herself with that entire sentence, but whatever. Peyton rolled her eyes at her dramatic friend’s tone of voice, and then came final words of her friend. She smiled brightly as they shook hands, the deal struck between the two of them. “Great! Next time I see him, I’ll drop the hint that you want to meet him!” she said as their hands fell away from each other, tucking a strand of blonde locks behind her ear. “Now…let’s talk about something else! I believe it is your turn to tell me about your summer…”

CASTING A FLAT LOOK AT HER FRIEND, JIMMIE watched her laugh without expression. She refused to crack a smile until she stopped and she even did that reluctantly. Unable to help herself. Peyton was just so damn cheery. It was one of the things that made her so likeable, Jimmie reckoned. She had a shine about her. "Thanks for that," She said flatly, clunking her tongue against the roof of her mouth as she pretended to sulk.
The prospect, however, of a brand new source did perk Jimmie up. She shifted, pulling herself in to an upright position and crossing her legs, a pillow clutched to her chest. "I'll be waiting..." She said expectantly, knowing that she would not let it go. She had proven to be quite persistent. "My summer?" Jimmie began, lifting a hand to make a show of flipping her hair over one shoulder. She gave a long and mysterious pause.
"Oh... nothing." She began eventually, a secret smirk on her face. "Just had my first piece looked over by the Editor of the Daily Prophet." She was practically vibrating with the desire to spill the entire encounter. It had, hands down, been the best part of the entire vacation. "It was... epic." She said, eyes wide and buzzed.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] WE'RE BRIGHTER THAN FIREFLIES LIGHTING THE SKY [attr="class","next"] Peyton giggled, a little uncontrollably, but quickly placed her hands over her lips as Jimmie spoke about waiting. She knew that the blonde wouldn’t drop the subject until Peyton finished her end of the deal. Until Peyton was able to prove that she had spoken to Daniel and told him that Jimmie wanted to meet him, she probably wouldn’t leave her alone about it. She just hoped that it wouldn’t scare him away in the long run. Jimmie moved to get more comfortable, holding the pillow to her chest even more tightly. It was then that Peyton felt something jump onto the bed and looked down to pet the little kitten that belonged to her, watching as it rubbed against Jimmie’s leg before snuggling down between the two girls. “Yes— your summer,” she breathed out as she leaned forward slightly as the pause between them prolonged the girls answer. A smirk slowly spread on the other girl’s face as she said nothing, and Peyton knew she was lying. “No—don’t do that to me, spill!” she begged, interest clear in her face. It was then, without even a second delay, she revealed her secret. And the girl let out a loud squeal, quickly throwing her hand over her lips as everyone that was still in the dorm looked at her. “Oh, my gosh Jimmie! That’s amazing! What was the piece about?” she questioned with interest as she moved closer, disturbing Kitty who quickly moved closer to the pillows that Jimmie had left alone. “Tell me everything!”

THOUGH PEYTON WAS QUICK TO LAUGH JIMMIE knew her friend would pull through for her. That's what made her so good. The perfect Hufflepuff, thought Jimmie. But, even she couldn't help the slight snort that escaped her as she watched Peyton giggle uncontrollably. She was funny like that. The arrival of the kitten, though, drew both of their attention away for a moment and Jimmie leaned over to rub her face against its baby soft body as it nestled in to the space between them.
Jimmie tried to be elusive as she swithered over her summer, but the excitement was much too important to her. She spilled after withholding for only a moment. Jimmie jumped up and down on her crossed legs as Peyton squealed, her face screwing in to a mad grin as she dissolved in to hysteria with her friend. It really was that important and she'd known that only Peyton would get just how much it meant to her. The girl fed on enthusiasm. "I know right?!" She yelled, the poor kitten disturbed from its snuggled place between them.
They settled fairly quickly, but Jimmie was still grinning like a maniac. "It was a piece about the rise in gnome settlement displacement." Jimmie explained, cracking her neck from side to side as she sobered up. "How it's become a real epidemic in the countryside, wizards coming along and treating whole communities of gnomes like pests." Jimmie shook her head gravely. "It's unacceptable, they've often been living their for centuries and then... they're just kicked out." Crossing her arms, Jimmie sighed heavily. "I exposed the hypocrisy of it and how we need to diminish the stigma around gnome neighbours and behaviours." She used her hands to create a banner as she smirked, "I called it 'Gnome Place Like Home'."

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] WE'RE BRIGHTER THAN FIREFLIES LIGHTING THE SKY [attr="class","next"] Peyton was incredibly excited for her best friend, and not even the appearance of her cat did it result in that disappearing. Their excitement, though disturbing the young cat, went back to her sleeping and soft purring that could be barely heard over the yelling and squealing of the two blondes. Jimmie, who was always someone that Peyton considered a friend, quickly went into talking about everything, not leaving out a single detail. Peyton listened with great interest, leaning in more and more and hanging onto every single little word. Jimmie seemed happy and content with her piece of work, and when she ended with what she called it, Peyton found herself content as well as a huge grin appeared on her face. “That’s—that’s so cool!” she squealed before shaking her head, “And I give you props for an amazing title…that’s geniuses!”

JIMMIE DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO BE HUMBLE AS SHE grinned happily at Peyton. Satisfaction leaking out of her very pores as she laughed and nodded her head. "I was... particularly proud of that." She replied, recalling the title she'd given her article. It helped that Peyton met her in enthusiasm, though Jimmie was sure she could power herself twice times over with her own. She flopped back on the bed and wiggled gleefully, closing her eyes for a moment and tossing an arm over her head.
"So, you see, I had to see you." Jimmie said, thinking back to her 'break in'. "I'm just so pleased." Jimmie intended to tell as many of her friends as possible, but Peyton had been the first. "One day... I'm going to be published." She said dreamily, staring at the ceiling, her hair fanned out around her head. "Not like, the school paper, but like a real newspaper." And the sure finality in Jimmie's tone was not unfamiliar, she often became stubbornly obsessed with her hobbies. But, this time it was different. The desire wasn't fading with time.
"Ah, I missed you, P." Jimmie said eventually, once her drowsy daydreaming passed. She crossed her legs and reached out to blindly pet her friends purring cat, burying her hands in to its soft fur. "You have the comfiest room."
