Brandon was bored. He really shouldn't be, since his musical career was starting to kick off now he could play his instruments again, but it wasn't like he recorded every day. Zander got him in with the same record company and sometimes Brandon even got to work with him, but most of his time was left to him to do what he wanted. Lately, a lot of that time was spent practicing the piano and guitar to get his fingers used to them again, but he wanted to get out of the house today, so Brandon went to Diagon Alley, bringing his guitar along, of course.
He wandered around a bit before deciding to get some ice cream. While he ate it, Brandon just watched the people moving down the Alley, but once he was done he didn't want to leave. So he pulled his guitar around and started plucking at the strings. Before long, he was playing for the people walking by, as well as the people eating ice cream. Whenever someone gave him a suggestion, Brandon started playing it, grinning. He could tell that the people around him liked it too. That's what he loved about his music. Making people happy.

@brandon 09.25.2024 Things were going excellently. Most of the time when she thought like that, it was with a hint of sarcasm, because for the last six months or so, nothing had gone exactly the way Cara had wanted it to. As she had figured, the family vacation right after graduation had done the trick with her creativity slump and the pieces of the puzzle were finally starting to settle in nicely together. It had taken way too long for it to happen, but this was better than it never happening. She would take anything g remotely close to creative writing these days. The spark that ignited her final decision on her novel’s plot came because of a discussion she had held with Kinsey, one of the few good things her younger sister had done for her. Obviously she didn’t know yet that the fantastical story being drawn up right now was going to be about her, but it would be pretty apparent eventually. Cara was sure of it. Whatever fallout that came from it would be worth it, because the source material was way too good to let go. A modern Shakespearean love story marred by an ignorant child. There were plenty out there, but Cara knew hers would stick out in the setting she was going to place it in.
Today, though, was one of her escape days. With the mental block finally released and the lack of siblings around to disturb her, she had spent the last few weeks freely writing down everything that came to mind. Those two things together, with the addition of finals at school, had created a sort of unholy trinity, ceasing all attempts to write her book and sending her into a creative pitfall. But she was liberated now, and to celebrate, she needed to pick up more writing materials from Diagon Alley. The muggle stores were fine, but she had a deal going on in the magical shopping district that she couldn’t pass up. Initially, the goal was to get in and get out, going home immediately after and relaxing the rest of the day without having to worry about work. Unfortunately, passing up ice cream was extremely difficult, even as she tried to force herself to walk by without looking at the shop. With her original goal now diverted, Cara sped up to the counter, ordering a bowl of ice cream, and then making her way back outside to the seating area. She hadn’t noticed the man playing guitar outside until she sat down at her table, the effects of her tunnel vision wearing off as she began to relax.
The scary part of the musician playing was that she actually recognized him, Brandon, once a Hufflepuff and then a Durmstrang, because she had spent a number of times yelling at him while at school. Now though, she couldn’t really do that. As far as she could tell, he hadn’t noticed her yet. If she ate her ice cream fast enough, she could avoid the awkward encounter that would definitely ensue if they started talking. So she tried to turn her chair around to face the opposite direction, only managing to spill one of her bags filled with writing materials across the ground. Wonderful, she had managed to become a klutz since graduating. Setting her ice cream down on the table, Cara went to work trying to collect all of her things.

Brandon wasn't really paying attention to his surroundings at all. He was too distracted by his music, by the fact that after such a long time of not being able to play he was finally sitting here in Diagon Alley with his guitar. It was a little bit weird to think that he hadn't done something like this in months, but Brandon was trying not to think. Right now he just wanted to feel the music and appreciate it. He was succeeding at that, entirely lost in his music when he heard some sort of commotion going on nearby. He opened his eyes and stopped playing. Someone dropped all their things on the ground. He hurried over to try and help the girl pick it up, setting his guitar on a nearby chair. He didn't have a glimpse of the girl's face yet, so he had no idea if he knew her or not. "Here, let me help you," he said, not waiting for her to say anything before he moved to help her. He liked helping people. cara june bainbridge

@brandon 09.25.2024 Being clumsy was a result of letting her mind wander over the last few months. It had initially begun during her studying period for final exams, forgetting where she had placed things first, and eventually turning into full on running into other people and the furniture in the common room. Too many things going on in her head at once seemed to be the trigger for this, unfortunately for her she had decided on a career path that relied solely on thinking to create. The current situation, knocking all of her brand new materials onto the ground, was nothing compared to a situation she had caused earlier in the month whilst scrambling around her bedroom for a note she had written down. Said note was extremely important for one of her side characters, and in the process of searching for it, all of her other notebooks, scribbles, and brainstorming papers ended up on the floor of her room all out of order and every which way.
Reaching for a notebook that was a little further away from the rest, Cara looked up to see that the guitar guy, Brandon, had stopped playing and was heading in her direction. That was great. Exactly what she had been trying to avoid was now happening. There was a reason she tried to limit the amount of time she was out in public these days. The awkward answers that always followed the questions about her job and how it was going were starting to get old really fast. She had started to think about developing answers to give everyone whenever they asked if they could read a chapter or two of her book, or vice-versa, seeming to think that she was some acclaimed author all ready. It was flattering to be put that high on a pedestal, but letting that get to her head wouldn’t help her case in the slightest. She was no one, and now somebody was taking pity on her for being an idiot. “No it’s fine. I’ve got it,” Cara blurted out as Brandon offered to help her, pushing her hair over her shoulder to keep it from getting in her way. “Don’t you have a guitar to play or something?”

Brandon was a little surprised when the girl said she didn't want any help. Most people liked help when they'd dropped something. At least, he thought they appreciated help. He stared for a second as he watched her pick up her things. He chuckled softly, "I can play guitar whenever. It's not like stopping for a few minutes makes it so I can't start again." Besides, the record company didn't really like him playing in public, though they didn't forbid it yet. Brandon needed to get his name out there first before that would happen. "Are you all right?" She looked very familiar and Brandon was sure that he'd run into her at school or something before. He was trying to remember her name, but having a hard time of it all the same. "It's Cara, isn't it?" he asked after a moment. If he remembered right, she was from Ravenclaw, but he'd wait to make sure he got her name right before he said anything else. cara june bainbridge

@brandon 09.25.2024 Her question had been rhetorical, one of the reasons it came out the way it did, but Brandon still answered it. Apparently the lack of siblings and younger students to bark at all day was making her sarcasm rusty, something she had never expected to happen. Regardless, Cara frankly didn’t care if he could play his guitar whenever he pleased, or that stopping to assist her was no problem to him at all. If her own ‘talent’ ever decided to manifest itself, she wouldn’t be spending so much time out in public eating ice cream and ogling former classmates busk Diagon Alley. At least he was doing something worthwhile. That was also the reason why she refused to let him help pick her things up – being her belongings aside, they were for her supposed craft for writing. She needed to learn to treat her tools better, and knocking them over so flippantly was surely symbolism for her current career state, as was Brandon’s ability to stop and go whenever he wanted with his music. She almost gagged for thinking about all of that, but it was also insanely hard to ignore the signs when they were right in front of her.
“I’m fine. Just being careless, is all,” Cara explained as she slid the last of her new, now semi-scuffed, notebooks back into their bag. Placing the bag back where it had been before she knocked it over, she eyed it for a few seconds, daring it to tip over and force her to repeat the process once again. Her recent lack of human interaction (aside from her parents, Diana, and the various shop owners she had talked to today) was really starting to get to her if a paper bag filled with writing supplies was going to tick her off. Conversing with Brandon wasn’t sounding like such a bad idea anymore. “Yeah. Cara. We graduated together. Or should have, I guess.” Durmstrang had an explosive send-off, after all. “Still waiting for your big break?” Cara asked, motioning towards his guitar. She wasn’t one to talk. Her own ‘big break’ was, at the earliest, months away, if not more than that. Music seemed like it was easier to break into than writing did, the simple correction of lyrics and instrumental parts paling in comparison to editing and refining a novel. She would fight tooth and nail in that debate, and definitely wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Brandon nodded as she said that she was just being careless. It wasn't like that was a novel thing. Most people were careless every once in a while. At least she could admit it. He watched as she glared at her bag and hid a small smile. She didn't really strike him as the kind of person that would appreciate him laughing at such a thing, and he really wasn't all to interested in making someone upset. He smiled when she confirmed her name. Sweet! Brandon wasn't the best with names, but he had been pretty sure about hers, even though the two never really talked with one another before. "Yeah, I thought I remembered you from classes before I switched schools," Brandon answered easily. If he'd stayed in Hogwarts, he would have graduated with Cara. As it happened, he'd graduated from Durmstrang, but hadn't been able to attend any ceremony. He was stuck in St. Mungo's for that, since his spine was shattered by the attack on the Durmstrang ship. They sent his diploma to him by owl a few weeks later, so at least he still had proof that he'd graduated. A part of him felt disappointed he missed the ceremony, but another part was relieved. Brandon wasn't really good sitting around for long periods of time. He got bored. Then again ... sitting around at the ceremony would have been better than sitting around in the hospital for weeks. He shook his head and brought himself back to teh conversation. Brandon shrugged a little. "Yes and no ..." his eyebrows scrunched together as he tried to think of how to explain himself. Oh well, might as well just give it all. If she didn't want to know ... well she was going to get it anyway. "I met with a record company and they want a contract with me, but they're busy recording with a lot of their big artists right now, so I'm kind of on the backburner. They want me to keep my music to myself a bit so that when we actually record and get stuff out there, it'll seem newer." He chuckled a little, "I'm not really good at keeping my music to myself ... so I'm still playing, but I'm trying to keep it to stuff that other people have done instead of playing my own stuff." Wow. That was probably way more than she was interested in knowing, but she did ask for it. "What have you been up to since graduation?"

@brandon 09.25.2024 Merlin, being remembered from classes was actually kind of embarrassing for her. While a lot of her fellow Ravenclaws were the stereotypical nerdy, geeky bookworm types, she was the complete opposite. Cara wasn’t sure how many of her classmates, or even housemates for that matter, knew of how much she struggled with work, her bite preceding her bark typically scaring others away before they could figure it out. Faking it until she made it was a solid plan until she was called on in class, and then the attitude had to come out. She wouldn’t even get into the students who were lazy and stupid. At least she tried her best until the end. That counted for something. “I’m sure I left an impression with quite a few people,” she said rather sarcastically. It wasn’t her fault that clueless idiots were clueless idiots though.
She never expected a lengthy response about his music. It seemed to her that since he was out busking on the street, things were kind of rough in terms of music deals. But to be on hold until his songs would hit better? Now that was something else. Here she was, getting pissed off over spilling writing materials for a book that could produce a career, and Brandon was already at that stage in his art. Cara felt like she was getting punched in the gut for not putting her all into her writing in the same manner that Brandon was with his music. Pulling out excuse after excuse for why she was at the point she was at was reaching its limit. “Wow…” Was all she could sputter out as she pulled herself back up to her chair, her eyes still trained down at the shopping bag. “I’ve been attempting to write a book. Took months to get to the starting point though…honestly, that’s impressive that you kind of already have a record deal.” She couldn’t get over that fact. Her book seemed infinitely less important when trying to place it next to a real musician. Brandon had created something for himself and was platforming off of it. All she had done was whine at her parents to get her sisters to leave her alone, and then scribble down a bunch of ideas on notecards. One of them was clearly going to be more successful in life, and it wasn’t Cara.

It was interesting, how being remembered from school didn't seem to be a good thing to Cara. At least, not from her tone of voice. She actually sounded a bit upset, which Brandon was surprised by. Didn't she want people to remember her? Granted, he'd never spent much time focusing on class or the people around him. During class, he found himself mostly distracted by his music. That's not to say he did poorly ... he passed most of his classes, he just didn't like lectures. Practical magic was better for him. "You seemed fine to me," he said with a shrug. She hadn't ever made a bad impression, if that's what she was implying. She was staring at him now. Not in a bad way or anything, just in surprise. Was it that surprising that he went into music or that people actually wanted him to perform? He thought he was a good musician. Then he heard her 'wow'. Ahhhh, so it was impressed surprise. He shrugged a little. Honestly, with Zander pulling all the strings for him, it hadn't been too hard for him to get into a recording contract. Then again, there was no way she could do that. He smiled when she mentioned that she was working on a book. "You're writing? That's awesome that you can do something like that. I imagine it takes a long time to get all those words onto paper, or even your thoughts all organized for it." He paused a moment, thinking of how that compared to his music, his eyebrows furrowing slightly in thought as he scratched his neck. "Do you really talk to people about your book or what you're writing?" He made a face when she mentioned that his stuff was impressive. "Naaah. I have a friend from school who got me the recording contract. Last year we did a few songs together, so he's kind of given me an in. Not so sure how I'd have done on my own." Of course, Brandon hoped he would have been just as successful on his own, but one never knew in the music industry. cara june bainbridge

@brandon 09.25.2024 She seemed fine to him. That wasn’t good enough for her. Cara wanted to be told she had left negative memories with people. She knew the reasoning behind that wasn’t sound, but knowing that she was awful to a person, or perceived that way, told her that she was at least remembered. ‘Seeming fine’ meant that she didn’t do enough, whether it was a positive memory or a negative one. Clearly she hadn’t harassed enough Hufflepuffs about their overfriendliness, or whatever. “That’s too bad.” Her tone matched the prior one, just as sarcastic and hinting, no, begging, Brandon to want to dig further. She would never be able to redeem herself, but talking about it out loud to someone who apparently never experienced her wrath felt like it would be some penance for her. “My sisters would say otherwise, I’m sure,” she added quickly. “But it’s all for the greater good. Someone had to show them the way in school.” That was going to make her sound like the perfect example of how to accomplish Hogwarts, when it reality she was the opposite.
Despite Brandon’s enthusiastic reaction to her chosen career, Cara was still trying to get over the fact that she was behind in the game. Sure, there were other classmates of hers that had yet to get jobs, or even knew what they wanted to do, but everyone else did or were already getting close to that point. “Thanks. It’s a…process. That’s the easy way to put it.” The hundreds, if not thousands by this point, of notes scattered around the house and her bedroom were any indication of how long it took to get words down, then putting them onto paper was going to be a nightmare. She still had to timeline them out and decide which events and plotlines were the best to take! “I don’t often. I think it’s easy to shoot someone down this early in the game, and I know everything I’ve been working on is fragile enough to crumble if it does get harsh criticism. After it’s written though, I don’t care. I’ll welcome it,” Cara shrugged. Having the free time and space (meaning without siblings bothering her) was all she really needed. “But you still had the talent to get to that point. I won’t know if I do until I talk to an editor after the book is written.”

Cara said it was "too bad". What? Did she not want him to remember her in a positive light? Granted, the two rarely interacted with one another, but Brandon thought it was better to have a positive memory of her than a negative one. Apparently not. His eyebrows furrowed, and he was about to inquire more when she added that her sisters didn't think so. Brandon shrugged, "It's always difficult with family. They don't really understand why we do the things we do and we don't always understand them either." He cocked his head curiously to the side. "Are your sisters the only people you showed the way to?" Cara might not like that kind of question, but he was just now starting to realize that she might have been expecting him to remember her being bossy or something. Brandon had no such memories, but not his curiosity was piqued. He nodded when she explained that writing was a process. "I believe it," he agreed. Music was a process too, and from his way of thinking writing and music were pretty similar. They took a creative mind, someone willing to really dive in. He'd never really envisioned Cara as that type of a person, but once again was brought to the fact that he didn't really know her. He nodded again, "I can understand that too. It's a lot easier to show someone the finished product instead of all the revisions and the whole developing process. They're never going to appreciate all the work that went into it either way, so it's less of a headache to let them in once it's finished." He smiled when she complimented his talent, commenting that he'd gotten this far. "Yeah, but from the way I see it, it's all about how committed you are. If you spend time creating something that you appreciate, there will be others in the world who will enjoy it to. You have to find the people that are selling to that market, then your hard work will pay off." Brandon was a big believer in hard work. If you put it in, you were bound to figure out a way to make things work. Even if it took years to do so, which wasn't too uncommon in his line of work. Lots of aspiring musicians spent years looking for their big break. It took determination and perseverance to get it. cara june bainbridge

@brandon 09.25.2024 Brandon didn’t latch onto the part that she had been hoping he would, but Cara knew she could work with it either way. Leading him into her personal misery, if it could even be called that, was what she wanted to do now. She nodded her head as he explained the difficulties of family, somewhat agreeing with him on it. In her opinion, her sisters should understand what she wanted them to do. Her ideas and commands were very simple. When she said jump, they were supposed to ask how high, and then jump. The whining and eye rolling happened too often. If they simply listened and did the things how she directed them, then there would be no reason to complain. It wasn’t a difficult concept. Peyton was the only one that really seemed to get it (and obviously she didn’t enact this rule on Diana or Dustin, since they had their heads on straight). “I tried to show some of the younger Ravenclaws how to properly study, but all they cared about was gossiping and playing exploding snap,” she shrugged. Exploding snap was kind of fun, but there was also a time and a place for it. Studying for a test was not that time. “My sisters, or most of them at least, didn’t get that I was trying to help them. They have difficulty looking past our personal issues.” That was a bold faced lie. Cara kept her voice even though, unwavering to give up the fact that she was exactly the same way when criticism was tossed her way. Brandon seemed to only remember the good things about her, whatever those were, so it was best to keep that image up now.
Listening to an industry professional (she could call him that, right?) talk about the ins and outs of creating and promoting a piece of work, was far more informational than she had thought it would have been. “That’s a lot to think about,” she said slowly as she continued to process all of his words. Had she really been putting her all into this project so far? There were times when all she did was eat, sleep, and drink it; others where she wanted nothing to do with it for days on end. Was that hard enough work, or hardly any work? Again, her problem went back to the fact that she didn’t have the raw talent Brandon supposedly had with his music. At least not yet. Nobody could tell her that at this point in time because there wasn’t any proof of it. “And I have to think about catering to muggles or not as well…there are so many options to go with.”

Brandon wasn't entirely sure if Cara was being completely serious or if she was joking around about the younger Ravenclaw students, but he couldn't keep himself from chuckling a little. Apparently the Ravenclaw students weren't completely distinct from the Hufflepuff ones, because he definitely spent a fair share of his own time playing exploding snap instead of doing his own work. "So everyone isn't always studying in there then?" he said, joking a little himself now. He couldn't help it. He nodded when she said that her siblings didn't understand she was trying to help. "Yeah, that definitely sounds like family," Brandon agreed. He didn't have a lot to do with most of his half-siblings, but he definitely remembered getting into fights over ridiculous things because they misinterpreted him or vice versa. Situations like that were always annoying. Cara looked a little ... overwhelmed when Brandon stopped talking and he hoped he didn't say too much or say something to worry her. He thought the idea of her writing a book was awesome. He nodded as she continued, talking about the potential of writing books that muggles could read too. "Yeah, there definitely are," he agreed, "but the cool thing is you can write the majority of the book and then decide who it would work better for. Does that make sense?" He wasn't sure if she would be okay writing without knowing her audience, but maybe it would help a bit to just get her thoughts out. cara june bainbridge

@brandon 09.25.2024 So Brandon was one of the uninitiated when it came to the greatest Ravenclaw secret. For some reason, she thought he would know that they weren’t all snobby, studious types. The Hufflepuffs were probably too absorbed in their little games to really see much else outside of their house. That made sense. Cara knew she was a good judge on the badgers because the triplets were in there. It was hard not to see all of the personality traits and faults of the Hufflepuffs exhibited by the three of them. “I hate to break it to you, but not all of them are even that smart either. And we won’t even start with the high stress levels everyone has,” Cara nodded her head, as if that excluded her. She was probably one of the worst, if not the worst, of the Ravenclaws when it came to brains. When she had been a third year, one of the seventh years at the time had described her as all bark and no bite; meaning she yapped more about other people’s studies than she acted upon her own. She was the biggest hypocrite in the house by far, and by time her final year rolled around she had probably convinced the majority of the younger students that she was far smarter than she actually was. The hours of extra studying just to get slightly above average grades had been painful at the end, and almost useless due to her chosen career path. Her siblings called her bluff, and that was why they ignored her ‘wise words’ over the last few years. It was her own fault for their estrangement, not theirs.
Now that her brain was wrapped around the idea of publishing for muggles, she was having difficulty of getting it unlatched. Muggle stories had provided her with hours of entertainment throughout her life, so it would only be fair if she wrote for them as well. There was chance that what could fail with the magical world could succeed with the non-magical. She had read interviews from authors talking about that. Apparently audiences were that different that it was a real possibility when it came down to it. “Yeah that does make sense,” she answered. “What about your music? Is there a specific audience you’re aiming for, or just anyone that’s willing to listen to what you have to say?” Music was just another form of storytelling after all.

Brandon listened intently as Cara started to explain that not all of the Ravenclaw students were very smart, but that almost all of them were very stressed about it. Well, that was interesting. He always thought the Ravenclaws were those who enjoyed school and learning and who seemed to understand things fairly easily. Obviously he was mistaken about that. "Good to know," he answered with a smile, realizing as he did so that it was probably the same as things inside his own house. Not all Hufflepuffs had the same strengths and goals and such. They all were focused on different things. He just hadn't thought about applying that to the other houses in Hogwarts. Huh. She seemed to get wrapped up in her own mind for a moment, as they talked about the possibility of her writing for muggle audiences and Brandon nodded and smiled. Knowing ones audience was always a good idea, and maybe talking about that would help her figure out where she wanted to go with her book even more. He chuckled when she said that he made sense. "I'm glad." He shrugged a little, "My audience ranges, depending on the song and my mood," he admitted. "I can write fairly mature pieces, but also enjoy songs for teenagers and young adults. I guess I'll really focus wherever the label tells me I should." Brandon was fairly confident in his ability to write for whoever he needed to. Most people seemed to be pretty easy to reach through music, from his experience. cara june bainbridge
