ONDINA HAD NEVER SEEN THE MERIT IN GAMBLING. It was, in her eyes, a fools errand and a crying waste of good money. She had other tastes, finer tastes. Her addictions lay in coveting control and verbal sparring. So, when she left Renard Goyle in that bathroom, glad to be free of him for good. It was with great fury and panic that she realised she'd left something important behind. A clue about herself that could ruin her. And so, she did a little digging herself by way of protection. Gambling wasn't Ondina's cup of tea, but it was certainly Renard's if the rumours proved true.
Slipping in to the low lit, muffled quiet of the Galleon Casino, Ondina slipped the knot from her khaki trench coat, her nose wrinkling at the stale, smoky air. The smell of thick colognes, perfumes and cigar butts. It was destitute, upholstered in rich green velvet and red hanging curtains where no windows sat in the walls. Small wooden tables dealt hands, and there was the cursing and cawing of the winning and the losing. The bluffers and the tells.
Ondina spied the bar first, taking a place at the end and ordering a glass of brandy before she turned with it in her hand. She had no intention of drinking it, she needed a clear head. Turning on the rickety brass stool, Ondina scanned the sea of heads. Most were hunched over a hand, but some sat tall. She assumed he would be of the latter. He had the kind of smarmy confidence that bred good posture.
And there, eventually, she saw him near the back. Her eyes immediately narrowed, something twisting in her chest that made her stand from her seat and weave between tables. She parked herself opposite him just as a new hand was being dealt. "Deal me in," She said confidently, pulling a red velvet pouch of galleons from her pocket before shrugging out of her coat. She would lose, that was certain. But that was one battle, and as far as she was concerned, this was a war.

Tonight was a good night. Excellent, in fact. There were not many of those when it came to his gambling career that was for sure. More money was lost than won over the last few years, and even more spent on the alcohol that was sloshed down to forget about all of it until the next morning. None of it truly mattered in the end; he made enough money through work and private investments in the muggle world that tossing hundreds of galleons down the drain like this barely put a dent on his bank account. That was the bonus of having a nice failsafe in his Gringotts vault. He could only spend what was in his pockets, and typically that was just enough to get him through the night, assuming everything he won was eventually lost.
Feeling it, Renard made sure to order a new glass of scotch before the next round; he was already a few deep, which normally wouldn’t be much for him, but the added high of repeated wins was starting to take control. Even if he managed to botch the rest of the night, the fact that he had gotten this far would be considered a success in his books. Holding up his empty glass and shaking gently to get the bartender’s attention, another drink was placed in front of him just in time for the round to begin and the hands to be dealt. The red-head sitting directly across from him didn’t draw his attention until he lifted his eyes from his cards to take a sip of his drink, the confident look on his face immediately being replaced with one of disgust as he recognized the woman as Ondina Weasley. Calling her a woman was being too nice; she was a spoiled brat at best, and while he sometimes saw bits of himself in her irrationality and immaturity, she gave it all a brand new meaning. He already knew that the way he reacted to her was going to be brought up, a snarky response thrown across the table at him, possibly an attempt to upheave the streak he was on. That sounded exactly like the kind of game she would play.
Unfortunately for her, Renard had found quite an interesting object on the floor of the men’s washroom after she had left their previous encounter: a vial, small enough to contain an assortment of nasty habits she could have. It would have been a waste of time to run a check on what the substance inside of it was, but he was sure the mere mention of it being in his possession would make her blood run cold. “Didn’t know you played,” Renard smirked. “Just don’t fold early this time.”

ONDINA PREDICTED THE BRIEF WRINKLING OF Renard's nose. In fact, it made her smile slightly. That she'd left enough of an impression to elicit something as strong as distaste was nothing more than a compliment to her. Let him remember her. Let her stick to his ribs like a bad cold. Tilting her head, she lifted her hand and wiggled her fingers in greeting.
Of course, this lick of satisfaction was not to mask Ondina's true reasoning for being at the Casino. This was recon. Her instincts told her he knew something. That, of all the people to discover her medicine, it would be him. She needed something just as incriminating on him. If that needed to be a gambling addiction, well, there were worse cards to hold. She picked up her own, fanning them out in her hand as he spoke. That slick, proper tone of voice. A well bred man with a silver tipped tongue.
"Hmm," She hummed, only a slight flaring of her nostrils displaying her irritation. "If I didn't know any better, I'd think the quicker I fold the better for you." She halted the absent sorting of her cards in order to look up at Renard. "Unless you like the pleasure of my company?" She bared her teeth at him, lips painted a dark plum this time. It made her look paler, even with a face full of make up. But, she liked that it made her teeth look whiter, sharper under artificial light.

The way she waved her hand at him was utterly grotesque, her phalanges moving in a pattern reminiscent of a skeleton’s, boney and unattractive. If he was stupid, he probably would have believed that she was vying after him. Renard, thank Merlin, was neither stupid nor desperate enough. All the booze in the world couldn’t get him close to wanting anything to do with her, and yet she couldn’t seem to keep herself away, once again interfering with his life in the most inopportune way possible. There had to be a few screws loose somewhere in there to want a second go at him. Their little encounter in the men’s room at work clearly wasn’t enough for her to understand that he wasn’t here to play her games of pettiness. The casino was for gambling. Winning and losing money. He could probably have her tossed out in a heartbeat for interfering with that, if he really wanted to. They had taken enough of his money over the last few years that a word or two and a drop of the Goyle name to the closest human security guard would most likely do the trick. He had yet to find a place where money didn’t solve all of his life problems. It was quite amazing actually.
Ondina was raving on about him potentially enjoying her company, and Renard snorted obnoxiously as he tossed a few chips to up the bet. “You’re wrong about both. Never will I find any sort of pleasure from your presence, and anyone that does is a sorry bastard. As for you folding, well, the longer you stick around, the higher the chance that I get to take money from you. So your choice really,” Renard shrugged, refusing to break eye contact with her from across the table. He was sure the other patrons at the table would grow tired of this childish squabble eventually, which would mean giving up on their attempts to win their money back. A sizeable portion was already in his pile, and he was sure he could get a large chunk of what remained before the scarlet beast scared them off for good. If not, he was content with pulling out for the night with what he had. The Weasley was going to do a good enough job ruining the night for him that he wouldn’t have to do it himself by gambling all of his winnings away like usual. At least she was useful for something.

MINDFULLY SORTING HER CARDS ONDINA DID not allow Renard's obvious disgust rankle her. She knew her place here was not usual, and the slightest slip up could mean she loss of her place. She wasn't exactly a common poker player. And she'd never had much of an interest in gambling. But needs must, and she had settled within herself that losing a game of cards to him was nothing.
"Ah, Renard..." She tutted like an old friend, her eyes crinkling as she forced a merry smile. "I can be charitable when needs must." She curved the edge of her thumb against the tip of one card, as if to sharpen it. "If you're really that strapped for cash, all you need to do ask." Looking up at him, her face was as cool as ice. But, underneath layers of expression smoothing make up and that awful, forced cheer, she knew just what Renard was saying.
The worst thing anybody could do to Ondina was to forget her. She didn't mind if he hated her company. If he thought she was worst thing to waltz in to the little dive den. As long as he hated her Ondina felt she had him hooked. Let him droll his unhappy insults. She could take it, and even give it back. "Besides, from what I hear, well you're much better at losing here than me." She rolled her eyes upward, the white brash against the dark liner around her eyes. "Maybe I'll just make you look better, for once."

“Charity isn’t a flattering colour on you, love,” Renard retorted immediately. He didn’t need her sympathy or pity; he knew he had a problem, and if he was bent on fixing it, he would. Unfortunately for her, Renard was perfectly content throwing hundreds of galleons away like this on a weekly basis. It was much better having a chance to win it all back than to piss it away on useless aesthetic upgrades like Ondina clearly did. Even through the smoke filled air, he could tell she had caked on the makeup once again. She was fake all around, it seemed. “I make more than your daddy does playing fetch with his dragons…though if you’re able to play here, it must mean he’s been peddling some side deals these days. Doesn’t surprise me at all.” Weasleys rarely had real jobs. Learning how to train dragons sounded like something a stupid muggle would tell as a bedtime story for a restless toddler. Then there was the mockery of a joke shop – the profits seemed like they were reasonable, but their product was utter trash, just like their cliental were. Anyone with a smidge of intelligence would see right through that scam. As for the rest, Renard couldn’t be bothered. One was his boss, though she failed on all fronts as well when it came to commanding the Ministry and protecting the common riff-raff. There wouldn’t be so many dead kids if she knew how to do her job correctly.
Ondina was trying to inch her way under his skin, like the blood-sucking tick she was. Normally this would have pissed him off – he was in his place of solace and performing well for once in a blue moon, and she was here disrupting all of that. “Don’t hurt yourself,” he commented, taking another peak at his cards before looking back up to meet her gaze. “We don’t want to have any cracks in that foundation, now do we? Can’t say I’m the best at consoling children after taking their candy from them.”

ONDINA BARKED A COLD LAUGH, TOSSING HER head back for effect as she splayed her cards out in one hand. "Well, now I know you're joking," She snickered, turning her nose up at her company. "You know there's nothing I can't wear, love." And she flashed him a pristine, Colgate smile. Twisting his words as she saw fit.
Though, something in Ondina's guts twisted at the mention of her father. She had little time for her relatives. She had the Weasley hair, and the Weasley's face, but she didn't have their nature. A She simply had zero tolerance when it came to her father. Ondina had once worshipped her father, or rather enjoyed the way he pandered to her. And her mother, though Ondina saw her more as a tool of necessity than anything else.
"Are you trying to implicate my father, Renard?" Ondina said coolly, though she managed to keep a straight face. Perhaps too straight. "Trust me, my his hands are as clean as yours are dirty." And she gestured to them, clawed around his cards so casually. Like he'd already won. She didn't care about poker, she cared about leverage. And whether or not he knew about her medicine. After she had what she wanted, she would leave. It was as simple as that. Except, there was nothing quite so simple about Renard.
She hadn't looked at her cards since she'd sorted them, busy burning holes in to Renard's face. And while she tried to burrow under his skin, he seemed perfectly intent to bounce right back up, and keep an eye on his hand. A duel attention that Ondina did not appreciate. "Trust me," Ondina said with a delicate snort. "I don't crack that easily." Derision heavy in her tone. She assumed he underestimated her. Not that she was incapable of cracking, she'd just rather die than crack in front of him.

Apparently he was funny today. Renard wasn’t sure what he disliked more about the Weasley girl; her laugh or her screechy voice. They were on par for winning the worst quality award in his eyes, and the excessive use of makeup and nail varnish came in at a close third. His eyes looked her up and down as she said everything looked good on her. He doubted that. There were probably quite a few things that wouldn’t, even if she wasn’t being serious. Clothing lines a bit out of her price range or even humbleness. Ondina Weasley would never know that. He knew because he was the same way except not as extra as she was. She tried too hard. Any normal person could see right through her, the only ones she was truly impressing were bar flies and muggle businessmen who would mistake her for an average-priced escort from the other side of the car window.
Renard chose to ignore her, knowing that she was on the defensive and would never let him win on a topic such as her outward appearance. Delving into an argument about that had the potential to make him look more immature than her. Being labeled less than a teenager wasn’t on his list of things to do for the day. “Simply making an observation. But that’s assuming it’s his money. Could be you that has a side business. There are quite a few ways for young ladies to make a couple extra galleons in this part of town. I’m sure you passed a few on the way here.” Black market traders, pickpockets, dancers, models (in the opposite sense that one would assume), and whores. Those were just a few of the normal crowd that would hassle the casino goers on their way in and out of the alleyway, sometimes a combination of a few. They made raging alcoholics and pixie dust addicts look like saints.
A smile flashed onto his face when she said she didn’t crack easily. That was unfortunate for her, because he had a few tricks up his sleeve that had a chance of making her fume. “Speaking of dirty hands,” Renard began, alluding to her other attempt to get under his skin, “You would not believe what I found while washing my hands after our last encounter. Funniest thing, really. Tiny little glass vial I’d say is, oh…about yay big.” Renard held up his hand to show her, index finger and thumb approximating the size of the vial. “Might want to be careful who sees you with those. Even if it’s an innocent concoction, people tend to wonder…” It was a baseless threat because he had no clue what had been inside the thing. For all he knew, it was cold medicine, a small attempt to subdue the sniffles.

IT WAS EASY FOR ONDINA TO ASSUME SHE HAD won a verbal sparring if her opponent refused to answer back. She wasn't humble enough to feel like silence was a jab on its own. She simply flipped her hair and took it as Renard conceding to her point. It did not, however, last for long. Even he could not resist his own desire to respond all of the time. Especially when it came to her father, which just wouldn't do.
"Well, stick to the pest control then." Ondina replied, rubbing the slick cards together until they bent slightly, but only a little bit. "Your skills are much better suited there." She did not appreciate Renard derailing the conversation away from them, especially when her father was not here to defend himself. It was funny, she didn't care about an awful lot of things, but somehow she couldn't help the way her hackles rose when it came to Charles Weasley.
"Why, are you looking to buy?" Funnily enough, Ondina did not find herself insulted by the obvious insinuation that she was a hooker - among other things, which is what she gleaned from Renard's vague attempt to insult her. At the very least he had moved on from her father. "I didn't think I was your type, Goyle." She tilted her head, smiling that same snake-like smile. No teeth, her cheeks creased slightly. And her eyes rather dull, the only thing betraying her true emotions.
Though, of course, Ondina knew that Renard was not done with her yet. She had, after all, come to the casino to figure out whether or not he knew about her medicine. Her eyes flashed as he slipped easily in to his revelation. Her jaw tightened, a muscle visible feathering in the hollow of her cheek as she forced a smile. "You find all sorts of funny things in the men's room." Ondina said evasively, maintaining the appearance of being unfazed, though her blood was quietly boiling. "Were you looking for beasties?"

“I wholeheartedly agree.” The funny thing about his job was that anyone could do it. It was messy. Things tended to go south very, very quickly if proper precautions weren’t taken with the more volatile of the creatures he captured. Ghouls and boggarts were the least of his worries usually, and those were the things Ondina probably thought he dealt with the most. If only that was true. “I enjoy it. Let’s me clean up the trash that likes to wiggle into our world and make a home for itself. I’m sure you know all about dealing with undesirables, doing whatever it is you do at the Ministry.” Professional suck-up was a more apt title, in his opinion. The majority of the low ranking positions in each department dealt with complaints and phone calls. He had surpassed that level years ago and had no problem holding it over Ondina’s head.
He looked away from her, chuckling as she asked if he was looking to pay for her. Her words, not his, that she was a prostitute. There may have been the allusion to it due to his phrasing, but he wasn’t stupid enough to call a woman a whore to her face. He wasn’t that vile. “You’re not,” he answered, scratching at his face as he looked her over again. “But there’s a first for everything, isn’t there? A hate fuck does wonders.” Renard purposely omitted the payment part, because like hell he was giving her money for anything. That was all he needed – Aurors coming down on him for prostitution. Weasley was the type to come up with that too.
The way she reacted to his findings was wonderful. His lips curled up cruelly as she tried to defend herself, passing it back off to him looking for creatures. It was funny because he called himself a garbage man only a few moments earlier. How topical of her to bring that in. “Unfortunately not that day. I already cleared out a nasty hag earlier in the day. She had a sharp tongue and wicked claws. I’m sure people could hear her cackles several floors down. Sound familiar at all?”
This was too much fun! During their last exchange in the bathroom, Renard felt like he had won the battle but was losing the war. Now he knew that he had secured his total victory, all in the span of a few minutes. A few hands had gone by whilst they were talking and he was feeling good about his winnings as well. For once, he was going to end on a positive note. “I think I’m done with this table for the night,” he said aloud, collecting his earnings in a small pouch that he kept tucked inside his jacket pocket. Standing up, Renard evened his tie and pressed the creases out his pant legs. “The least I could do is buy you a drink Miss Weasley, since I’ve taken some of your money,” he added over his shoulder as he headed towards his normal spot in the corner of the bar.

MAINTAINING THE SNAKE-LIKE SMIRK ON HER face, Ondina knew perfectly well what Renard was insinuating as he explained the depths of his disgusting, and boring profession. She didn't care about the in's and out's of his daily grind. Or that he thought of her job as Ministry trash. "Well, it's a shame you can't just... bag up yourself, right?" She said sweetly, knowing fine well that it was not her best retort but unable to stop herself regardless.
And while it almost wrinkled her pride that he agreed she wasn't his type - Ondina was anybody's type, depending on the day and the lighting. She still found her nostrils flaring knowingly, head tilting as if Renard was admitting something when he was not. He was almost like any other poor, hapless man that Ondina took interest in. "Mm, I bet you know that all too well." But he wasn't. He was Renard, and it would take more than a hate fuck to purge her of her everlasting abhorrence.
Ondina almost enjoyed the way his lip curled, expecting an answer before she'd even finished her own. He had something on her, but only if she allowed him to think that. It was important, though almost impossible, for her to maintain her cooling innocence. Her gaze flickered away, though rolled back as he all but named her a nasty hag. "I didn't know your mother was visiting that day, Renard." She replied, quick as a mousetrap. "I might have said hello."
Though Renard tapped out far quicker than Ondina pegged him too. She'd thought him the type unable to leave the table until he'd bled it dry, or bled himself. Had almost relied on it, her eyes narrowing as he neatly stacked his winnings and pocketed them. A sharp twinge in her jaw that begged her to open her mouth, to draw him back with some acerbic remark. But, she didn't have anything worth voicing. "I didn't take you for a quitter." She said blandly, but there wasn't much force behind it, he'd already stood from the table.
Her her face almost visibly surprised when Renard offered her a drink. Ondina wondered what game he was playing this time. He was either a masochist or terribly stupid. Or perhaps he'd thought himself a winner already. She couldn't have him thinking that. The money she wasn't worried about, she'd known he was a far superior poker player before she'd even sat at the table. But he still had her phial and she wanted that back before she let him be.
Ondina denied herself the satisfaction of leaving while his back was turned and gathered up her half empty pouch, standing up from her seat and leaving it pushed out and crooked as she stepped around the table and followed in the same direction Renard had left in, coat slung over one arm. He was sat at a stool, perfectly relaxed. It irked Ondina beyond reason. She slipped in to the one beside him and shook out her hair. "Vodka," She said without looking at him, drumming her fingers against the top rhythmically. "Straight."

“I suppose it is,” he shrugged. He had to give her that one, it was a witty comeback. Not the best though because it was something he could easily anticipate coming out of her. Hell, he was positive that he had probably used the same retort before. It was classic for sure and with the witless it worked like a charm. Shutting people up was his favorite and he assumed the same went for Ondina as well. As for the nighttime excursion they were currently picking apart, he let out a low chuckle at Ondina’s comment. Of course he knew all about it! He was Renard Goyle. He hated almost everyone, so every girl he slept with ended up like that one way or another. It was one-hundred percent his fault too and he really didn’t care. “You make it sound like a bad thing Miss Weasley. Once you work a little more, you’ll understand that us adults need to let out steam every now and again. Drinking, gambling, sex, literally anything to escape work.” Work didn’t even need to suck to resort to any of those things either. Her rose-colored glasses wouldn’t last much longer. The Ministry had a special way of sapping the soul out of all of its low-level workers.
He let out a long, sordid laugh at her attempt to drag his mother down. If only she knew how horrid of a woman Millicent Goyle really was. “Don’t waste your time on her. She’s a miserable wretch that doesn’t deserve any sort of attention.” Calling her a hag would have been a compliment on a nice day. She was dumb as a box of rocks, only smarter than the security trolls she trained by a couple of IQ levels. The only reason his parents had ever been allowed to graduate from Hogwarts was because the school didn’t want to deal with them anymore. They always did that with the really stupid ones. He was sure the school thought he and his sister would take after their parents, but the joke was on them. Children could only take so much idiocy before they put it upon themselves to be better than their parents. The Goyle siblings had done just that. They also didn’t quit, as Renard was about to say, “I don’t quit. I back off when I’ve made enough to pay for my tab for the night.” Not always, but he didn’t want to look like an idiot in front of Ondina when he was already so far ahead of her.
Renard wasn’t sure if she would follow. He wouldn’t blame her if she bailed then and there – it was a perfect out for the girl, especially after the embarrassment he had just slapped down on her at the table. But she ended up taking a seat next to him. Renard hid his surprise as he waved Hans the bartender over, right as Ondina ordered her drink. Vodka, straight. Pedestrian level, really. “The usual Hans,” Renard ordered, turning his head so that he could get a better look at the Weasley girl, using his arm to prop his chin up. “So how’ve you been? Is being a big kid everything you thought it would be?”

ONDINA DID NOT APPRECIATE BEING TREATED LIKE an ignorant child. She reckoned that was why Renard attempted to treat her as such. Like he was decades her senior and so very wise. She snorted lightly at the mere notion. There was a reason they both collapsed in to a pattern of insult after insult. He was no better than her, and she knew it. It was a shame he did not, because it made him all the more ridiculous in her eyes. "I'm quite set on my extracurricular's," She told him primly, though her eyes had narrowed some.
What Ondina had no expected was the hard barking laugh Renard gave as the mere mention of his mother. It sounded rather bitter and piqued her interest greatly, though she made no further mention of it. She'd bleed it out of him later and if not, she'd ask Nefe instead. There was always a lead to follow. Perhaps that was why she didn't leave when he disappeared towards the bar.
The vodka was for her patience as she slid in to the seat beside him. Noting that Renard appeared to be on first name terms with the bartenders. She gave him a sideways look, curling a lock of red hair around her ear so that she could see him properly. "'Big kid?'," She asked with a single raised brow, crossing her legs slowly as she leaned against the bar to turn towards him. "What are you now, my mentor?" She said this with a bit of humour in her tone. But, because she liked talking about herself, she answered him properly anyway. "I like paying for my own shit," She smirked. "And Hogwarts was a bit of a drag."
Shrugging loosely, Ondina lifted her glass when it was placed in front of her. She downed the entire tumbler in one, the glass clattering when she smacked it back down on the bartop. She'd need a little something if she were to tolerate Renard for more than five minutes without threatening to strangle him. "What about you, huh?" She asked, using her thumb to neaten up the corner of her mouth. "Is pest control all you thought it'd be and more?"

Renard shrugged smugly when she said she was fine with what she was doing after work already. That was her choice. Not everyone had to be him, though the world would be a lot tolerable if everyone could think in the same manner that he did. He knew he would hate himself for that, but that was better than watching grown men leave the casino kicking and screaming because they sucked at gambling. For a few moments there, he thought Ondina was going to be the same way. The look on her face once he had started to win hands certainly looked familiar to him. Spend any amount of time in a casino and you were able to spot it from a mile away. Across the table was much more formidable and telling though. “Fair enough. Merely presenting you with options of things proven to work. Alcohol tops the list for most. Self included.” He raised his glass to her before taking a sip, getting lost in it for a few seconds. Too many nights had been spent in this same exact position; same bar stool, same drinks, same haziness that took over by this time in the night. Eventually he would have to call it a night. If Donna caught him dozing at the bar it would warrant a scolding, which he hated getting in front of the normal patrons. It showed favoritism, and that was something he did not need while at the casino. Unless it was free drinks. He would take those without second guessing them.
He had grabbed her attention by challenging her capabilities as an adult. That always worked on people like her. It had worked on him at one point in time too. Which was exactly how he knew which buttons to push. They were basically the same person when it came down to it. Spoiled brats with egos of an immeasurable size. Renard hated being told what to do as much as Ondina disliked him pointing out things to her. “Agreed,” he responded to the latter half of her speech, ignoring the first part. He didn’t believe in mentors, because that meant that someone wasn’t capable of learning on their own. Guidance was okay from time to time, but a full on instructor and life coach was a load of bull. Those that couldn’t figure out life on their own were better off working the jobs nobody wanted, like a cashier at a bookstore or training security trolls. His mother did an excellent job at her shitty place of employment.
“Oh I love it,” Renard started, feeling a small tug at the corners of his mouth as he thought about dealing with the creatures that got in his way. “The small beasts aside, I enjoy having authority over how the werewolves and centaurs manage their lives. They aren’t entirely bright you know. The Ministry will have you believing otherwise but it’s simply not true.” He took another long sip of his drink, before staring down at it, rocking it enough in his hands to get the ice to swirl around at the bottom of the glass. This same conversation got boring after repeating it a hundred times. Usually it drove the listening party away, disgusted by his take on how half-breeds should be treated in the magical world. “Then again, the Ministry tries to have us believing a lot of things. Unfortunately that isn’t how the world really is. For every peaceful, tamed wolf, there are a handful that want to rip our throats out for having a life that they can’t. The prices of Wolfsbane can be lowered as much as they want, it’ll still be too costly for most of them. And we will never be cured of their plague.”

ONDINA WAS NOT UNFAMILIAR WITH THE EFFECT a good bottle of vodka could provide. Plus, she'd often used it in the past to dull the aches and itches of a bad week or month. But, in her experience, nothing worked more to please her than leverage. If she remained ahead of the game then fun usually followed. And alcohol made her stupid, and she didn't trust a lot of people to be stupid with. So, most of the time she capped herself at one or two. But, Renard inspired a hunger for more of it in her. Something about his general demeanour, she thought.
Though, Renard adopted an unfamiliar smile when he spoke about his work. With an air of superiority that told her he was very sure he knew what he was doing. She'd only asked because it had fit nicely in to the conversation, but she found his expression interesting. He really enjoyed it, he actually liked his job. Ondina couldn't agree, as she was still stuck schmoozing with underlings. It bothered her a little that he was happy shovelling beastly shit and she couldn't be bothered to push form after form in her own cushy placement.
"Well, you sound happy as a pig in shit." She muttered, twisting around in her stool as she crossed her leg and pushed at his footrest with the toe of her heel, jostling him a little bit. "Can't be that hard," She wondered, running an errant hand through her hair. "I mean, they're... animals." She didn't have much of an opinion on where centaurs and werewolves stood unless that was right in front of her, in which case, she simply wished they'd stop blocking her light. She lifted a hand to the bartender while Renard continued to speak, motioning for a refill as she listened with one ear.
"Well, it's a disease, right? An infection." She said, shrugging one shoulder as she lifted her new glass of vodka and sipped it this time. "I guess, if I were to think about it - and I really don't," She added, just in case he thought she honestly gave a damn. "I'd say they spend too much time perfecting suppressants instead of finding a cure." And that was all she thought on the matter, and only because he'd incited it from her with his boyish enthusiasm and wicked little smile. Her glass was half-way to her lips and she smirked a little over the rim, "But, then you'd be out of a job..."
And, of course, the thought pleased Ondina as discomfort often did. No matter that there would always be creatures to wrangle, and Renard's job was quite safe. The thought appeased the crackling tension that seemed ever present between them. But, for a second she actually had something of a civil conversation with him. As far as civil went between the two. And as she eyed him carefully, she wondered how far she could stand him. And how far their anger could stretch and remould itself. It settled like a wasp in her stomach and she downed the rest of her drink to quiet it, but it stayed and it buzzed.
