Thanksgiving was normally one of Ashley Fontaine's favorite holidays. The main reason being, she got out of school for it! Sure, Ashley loved school and learning, but she missed her family when she was in school. Her parents and her oldest brother, to be specific. Getting out of school for a few days wasn't long, but it was time they spent together. That was what really mattered, even if most of their time together was actually spent at parties. It was fine. However, this year was not like other years. For one thing, they were at Hogwarts and not Ilvermorny. For another thing, going home for Thanksgiving was not a thing here. Ashley felt undeniably disappointed by the fact that she wouldn't see her parents or her oldest brother, but she still had Joe here. That was a good thing. Even better than that, Eli was here. She couldn't help but remember last year when she'd considered writing him at Thanksgiving but decided against it. Being in the same castle, that wasn't an issue. The only issue was, he was probably already busy doing things with his brother or other friends. So when Ashley walked into the Great Hall, she wasn't surprised when she glanced around and saw Eli already surrounded by people. That was fine. She went over to the Slytherin table, sitting beside Joe and a few other people she'd met. She smiled and laughed as everyone joked around. The food was delightful. The best thing about Thanksgiving beside seeing her family was the chance to eat fabulous food. Ashley especially liked mashed potatoes and turkey and stuffing. As she first sat down, she was a little hesitant to try, doubting that this Hogwarts food could compare to what her family ate, but Ashley was pleasantly surprised. The food was wonderful! She ate way more than she should have, staying there much longer than she originally planned. Apparently she wasn't the only one to do so either. As she stood and started making her way to the door, there were a crowd of people from all the tables heading in that direction as well. She was too food-happy to really care though. FILLED WITH TURKEY AND THE JOY OF GOOD company, Eli filed out of the Great Hall feeling much better than he had thought he would. Thanksgiving was often spent at home for the Flemings, though it had been rather morose for the last four years since his mother had gone missing. They often ate in silence, the sound of cutlery scraping dismally against plates as they made stiff small talk. And while Eli missed his father, he did not protest when he learned he would stay on site. It was already far superior.
Eli left Bri with a smile, licking pumpkin cream from his lips and thumb as he scanned the crowds of students in front of him and behind. Somewhere among them was a familiar head of blond hair. He had plans for him and Ashley, because there was no one else he wanted to finish his first solo Thanksgiving with. They were officially friends again, which Eli was all too willing to take advantage of.
Spotting Ashley's primly curled golden head bobbing along in front of him, Eli's heart jumped with anticipation. She was quite a ways ahead of him, sandwiched between other students as they filed out of the Great Hall. Eli tried to elbow between people politely in an effort to catch up, but by the time she was within reach they were already out of the Great Hall, the crowd thinning as people split in different directions. Eli came up behind her, poking his fingers in to the softness of her waist to alert her as he slid in to the spot at her side.
"Hey..." Eli whispered in to her ear, almost hissing as he pretended to be clandestine. "Come with me." Overall a very familiar turn of events. Many times before they had found themselves just like this, Eli looping their arms and pulling her away so that they could go on an adventure. Except, this time it wasn't quite as impulsive. This time around Eli actually had a plan.

Making her way to the doors took ages. Ashley didn't really mind because she wasn't in a hurry, but everyone was pushing and squeezing through the door, all trying to go at the same time. She chucked to herself, glad that when she got to the door it wasn't that bad. She sighed as she left the great hall, looking around as she tried to decide what to do next. She jumped, squealing when someone poked her side and spun to see who it was. She was fairly sure it was Joe and was all ready to get angry at him for tickling her in front of people, but it wasn't. "Eli," she breathed, an instant smile covering her face as she nodded to his suggestion that she come with him. But first she slapped his shoulder, shaking her head at him, despite her continued smile. "You can't do that to me, Eli. Not with a bunch of people around, remember?" It wasn't about being with him, it was about him tickling her in front of people. "I don't want everyone to know I'm ticklish," she added after a second, making sure he knew what she was getting after him for. She started walking with him, leaning close as she walked. "What are we doing?" she asked. Ashley knew there was a chance that Eli wanted it to be a surprise, but she still couldn't keep herself from asking. Elijah Theron Fleming

FOR A SECOND ELI PANICKED AS ASHLEY SCOLDED him, his thoughts immediately falling back to a time when they had only been friends in secret. His smile dropped and he pulled away from her instantly, only to almost sag with relief when she added that she didn't want anyone to know she was ticklish. "Sorry," He said, laughing nervously as he ruffled the hair at the back of his head. "Hands to myself." He lifted his hands and wiggled them where she could see them.
With a tilt of his head, he guided them down the hallway towards a door that would lead them to the courtyard. "Ah, it's a surprise." He said evasively slapping a hand over his mouth as he pushed the heavy wooden door open, holding it for her before letting it fall closed behind him. There was a chill in the air and he rubbed it from his robed arms, burying his face in the scarf around his neck as they took the steps down to the grassy front.
"Thought we'd have a little celebration of our own." He said as they walked, leaking little bits of information at a time. "I mean, it's the first time we've been stuck at school." At least for him, he hadn't even known if Ilvermorny was open over the Thanksgiving Holidays, it had been such an essential family celebration for as long as he'd known. "Do you miss your family?" He asked her, knocking their shoulders like always.

Eli's reaction was no surprise to Ashley and she instantly felt guilty for it. She didn't want to make him feel like he couldn't touch her and she knew that he thought she was getting mad at him for approaching her in public. "No, no I'm sorry," she said, reaching over to grab his arm, looping her hand in it. "I need to get used to that so I don't scream in front of people and give myself away, you just took me by surprise." Which in all honesty, she liked. She liked that Eli searched her out, that he was teasing her and wanted to do things with her. "You're fine. Promise," she added with a nod of her head, hoping that he'd believe her. She didn't want Eli to feel like he had to hold back with her. It was no surprise to Ashley when Eli said that it was a surprise, leading her outside into the chilly air. "Of course it is," she muttered, grinning at the thought as she left the castle through the door Eli was holding open for her. She pulled the sleeves of her jacket down so that it covered her knuckles, which would hopefully keep her fingers from getting super cold. Still, she stayed close to Eli, excited to see what he had planned for them today, or rather, tonight. She quirked an eyebrow at him when he said they'd celebrate on their own, since it was the first time they'd been stuck at school. "Sounds reasonable," Ashley answered, eyes glinting as she tried to think of what kind of thing Eli would come up with as a way to celebrate. She nodded and shrugged at his question. "Yeah, it's weird to be here and know they're celebrating without me, but at least Joe is here with me," Ash answered honestly. "You?" she nudged his shoulder right back, getting more curious by the second. What did he want to do with her that was away from the castle? Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI NODDED AT ASHLEY'S REASSURANCE, HIS panic almost immediately forgotten when she looped her hand in his. It was that easy. "Don't worry, I get it." He rubbed the top of her hand with his in his own attempt at reassurance, knowing that they were still on unknown ground. While their friendship was not unfamiliar, the complete honesty sort of was. No matter how close they had been before, there had been an invisible barrier. Not any more.
Out in the early evening air, it was crisp and dry and Eli loved it. Though he worried it would be a bit much for Ashley. He stayed close just in case they had to go back. "Yeah, I'm glad I have Atticus." Eli said with a happy sigh. "But, I'm not that bothered we're stuck here." Because, in actuality he didn't feel stuck at all. "Things are always weird around the holidays at home." He said with a forced laugh, watching the toe of his boat kick loose leaves as they crossed the courtyard. "You know, since mom." He didn't want to ruin their celebration and so did not elaborate further. Ashley already knew.
Reaching up suddenly, Eli clapped his hands together and stopped. "Okay!" He announced, wrapping an arm around Ashley's shoulders and pulling her to him for a brief one armed hug. "Here it is..." And then he gestured to the massive mound of leaves standing before them. It was virtually as tall as Eli, a mass of oranges and reds and yellows. "I helped the Groundskeeper all week for this." Eli revealed a smile on his face as he tucked his hands deep in his pockets, turning to Ashley with a daring expression. "Are you ready to dive in?"

Ashley smiled and nodded in response, instantly relieved when Eli said that he understood. He rubbed her hand and her smile grew a little. She loved being close to him and now that they were both friends again, any interaction with him was great. Especially since all that underlying tension was gone now. She wasn't exactly sure why, but she loved how simple it was now, the instant trust that developed between the two once more, now that they got past what happened in the spring. When Eli mentioned his own brother, Ashley wasn't surprised at all. She knew the two were close, so it was almost expected that Eli was glad he was here. She nodded when he said he wasn't bothered to be here, mentioning after a second how things were weird at home, after his mom. She looked over at him, wanting to give him a hug or something, but instead decided to change the subject a little after nudging his shoulder and offering a sympathetic smile. "Yeah ... it's kind of nice being able to relax instead of having to go to a bunch of parties," she answered casually, shrugging her shoulders. Sure, Ashley loved the family parties, but staying here was more peaceful and being close to Eli again was better than some fancy party. She'd choose this any day, which was a startling revelation to her. She jumped a little when Eli clapped and was about to turn and face him when he pulled her in for a side hug. Laughing quietly, Ashley hugged him back before turning her attention to the mound in front of her, something she hadn't noticed before since she'd been so focused on Eli. A huge grin slowly took over as realization dawned, all thoughts of the cold air forgotten and she turned to Eli and nodded repeatedly, obviously excited. "I am soooo ready for this! You wanna do it together?" she asked after a second, holding out a hand as her eyes flashed with a challenge. She'd never had the chance to jump into a leaf pile this huge before and she was stoked! AS ASHLEY REVEALED HOW SHE HAD ENJOYED her break from the parties her family attended at Thanksgiving, Eli remembered that they lived drastically different lives. Eli had grown up on a removed plot of land that the Fleming's had bought on a whim. They lived comfortably, but carefully and were often seen outside barefoot. Ashley knew an extravagance Eli doubted he ever would. "I bet..." He said under his breath, but he was mostly just glad she was with him instead.
Standing before the mass of leaves, Eli felt Ashley's excitement fuel his own. He hopped in place, grabbing her hand when she offered it and taking a few steps backwards for a running start, casting her a final look before the counted down together. "1... 2... 3," They dashed off at top speed, hand in hand before launching themselves in to the great pile. It was an explosion of colour all around them. Leaves like confetti as Eli whopped upon landing, his breath gone but his heart exceptionally light.
They landed on their front and separated as the grass cushioned them. Eli turned on his back quickly to watch the final cascade of leaves all around them, gripping handfuls from around him so that he could toss them at Ashley from his side, a splash of them on her face and chest as he barked a happy laugh. This was the kind of Thanksgiving he had wanted.

Eli was a bit quieter than Ashley expected when she told him about how she'd enjoyed the break, not saying anything in response. She glanced over at him, thinking that maybe she heard him say something but he was just looking ahead, seeming lost in thought. To heck with that! If she was going to spend her time with Eli, she wanted to talk with him and see him laugh and be happy while they spent time together. "It's also way nicer that I can see you whenever I want instead of having to write letters," she added after a moment, nudging his shoulder with her own once more and looking up at him. She wanted to see that smile again. Ashley couldn't help but laugh as Eli's excitement grew to the point that he was jumping up and down, only stopping when he took her hand. She followed him back and nodded as they counted down before running right at the pile of leaves. Right before they reached it, Ashley let go of Eli's hand and jumped high, laughing hard as she felt the leaves crunch beneath her. The leaves around her rose into the air as Ashley and Eli landed and then started falling down on top of her. Ashley couldn't seem to stop laughing, despite the fact that she was out of breath from her landing, but hearing Eli whooping nearby made her giggle. She rolled onto her back, looking over at him and grinning. He looked like a little kid that just opened his Christmas presents, delight covering all his features. Sighing, Ashley looked up and watched the last few leaves fall, closing her eyes as she burned this moment into her memory. This lighthearted, happy moment that she wanted to remember forever. She shrieked, sitting up when she felt something landing on her, then laughed when she realized. Leaves. Eli. She turned to face him, scooping up an armful of leaves, "Oh, so that's how it is?" She challenged as she dove towards him, throwing the leaves as she went. Only after she jumped did she realize that unless he moved, she was definitely about to land on top of him. Ashley laughed again, knowing he wouldn't care and not even caring herself. Elijah Theron Fleming

WHEN ASHLEY SPOKE IT WARMED HIS EARS AND dipped his head bashfully. She liked it better when she could see him. "Agreed." He admitted, shrugging his shoulders up around his ears with a short laugh. He didn't know why but it made him fizz on the inside. In fact, maybe he did, but he dared not think it. He wouldn't ruin their day by thinking it.
He distracted himself with the leaves, the crunch and fly of them as they landed and then settled. He could hear the melodious sound of Ashley's laughter as they lay side by side, but he couldn't help himself when he tossed a handful of leaves her way. He held his breath as he watched the shock on her face, staying stock still as she shot him a look, he nodded at her. "That's how it is, Fontaine." He said happily, but before he knew it she was diving towards him. He didn't have enough time to move out of the way and so she landed hard on his chest.
"Oof," He huffed as the air was forced out of his lungs, squeezing his eyes shut as he got a face full of leaves. His body shook with laughter and he grabbed her around the waist, swinging them so that she was on the ground and he was bent over her. His hand had found her wrist and he huffed a heaving breath as he looked down at her, shaggy brown hair falling in to his eyes, her pulse racing under his fingertips. "That was an attack." He muttered, though he realised their faces were much closer than before and he swallowed heavily, the atmosphere thickening around them.
Eli forced himself to let her go and sit back, a flush in his face as he swiped leaves out of his hair and felt them crunch under his knees. "You're kind of vicious, you know that, right?" Eli joked, breaking the tension that had fallen over them. He thought maybe he imagined it as he smiled at her, tightening the ends of his scarf.

Eli agreed. It wasn't really a surprise that he would agree that it was better to see her than just write letters, but Ashley loved that he said he felt the same. It was further confirmation that their friendship was well on its way back to where it was last year, which she definitely wanted. Ha! He definitely hadn't expected her to dive at him. Eli just grinned as he told her that was how it was, his eyes widening slightly when he realized what was about to happen. She heard him grunt in a low tone when she landed on him, but Ashley was too busy laughing. She couldn't seem to stop the giggles, nor did she want to. His face looked so funny when he just stared at her, knowing what was coming but not having enough time to stop it. Well worth any "punishment" he might try to give her now. She gasped, still giggling when he took her waist and rolled over, pulling her with him and then holding her wrist as he hovered over her. Ashley couldn't control her laughter. "You're face," she said, chuckling still as she looked up at him, her eyes meeting his. Ashley's giggles started to relax when he muttered that it was an attack, though she couldn't wipe the grin from her face. Nor did she want to. "I had to retaliate somehow," she teased, winking up at him. She was a little surprised by her actions, since she didn't normally flirt so openly with Eli. Normally it was all about a shoulder nudge here, a poke there. Verbal flirting was what she did with other guys, guys like Sav and Gilderoy ... she was a little curious to see how he'd respond. Still staring up at him, Ashley bit her lip softly for a moment, feeling the tension grow as he hovered over her. After a few moments, Eli leaned back and released her. Surprisingly, a rush of disappointment swept through Ashley. What, why was she disappointed? Still, she pushed it away, grinning once more as she pushed herself so she was sitting. She tilted her head to the side and shrugged one shoulder so it almost touched her ear. "I grew up with three brothers. Is that a good enough excuse?" Ash laughed, reaching forward and pushing a leaf off of his shoulder before glancing down to see that there were leaves all wrapped up in her hair. And that was only the hair that was in front of her shoulder. Ash wrinkled her nose for a moment before deciding to make a joke out of it. "So, here's my new look, what do you think?" she asked, twisting her head and lifting her shoulders so he could see her leaf-filled hair. A part of her was embarrassed about how dirty she probably looked with so many leaves in her hair but there was no way she would show it. A hint of daring touched her expression. "You wanna jump in again, since we can't really get more covered in leaves than we already are?" Ashley chuckled again, waiting for Eli's response. Elijah Theron Fleming

THERE WAS SOMETHING UNDENIABLY INFECTIOUS about Ashley's laugh. When she really let go and allowed herself really feel it, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably, face contorted and mouth wide. She had really nice teeth, he thought, looking down at her for a beat as she kept laughing about his face. He supposed that's why he liked her smile so much. Or maybe that was because when she smiled at him he truly felt like the only other person in the room. Like she'd manufactured that smile just for him.
Eli felt like a bit of a sappy idiot when he sat back, brushing leaves from his hair. Gathering his composure as he laughed with her, a shaky but genuine thing. They were friends, that was it. He shouldn't be thinking about her lips or her smile, not the way that he was. It was dangerous. He'd been there before and it hadn't ended well.
"Nah..." He said, drawing the syllables as he tilted his head at her. "I think you were just born like that." He watched her small hand reach and affectionately swipe a leaf from his shoulder, warming his chest at the absent way she interacted with him, a stark difference from before when every step had been like walking on eggshells. He loved it.
It sparked his confidence, prompting him to reach up and slowly pluck a leaf that was tangled in her hair. "It's not bad." Thoughtful, as if considering the new arrangement, he tutted once. "But I don't think you want an accessory that rots." Eli couldn't help but snort at that, reaching up to pluck another and another until there was none left, dropping them until he got the the very last. It was a sycamore leaf, red and yellow and a little cracked. As discreetly as possible, he slipped it in to his pocket. For his scrapbook, he reasoned, but that was only a fraction of why.
Standing up, Eli offered her a hand as he smiled. "C'mon," He said, already agreeing to her offer to go again. "Piles a little flat, but we can make it work." He reached down and gathered up a handful before tossing them in to the air around them. It was a sea of reds and oranges, the prettiest rainfall he'd ever seen. He kicked them next, toeing little mountains so that they scattered around them. It was some of the most fun he'd had in forever, but he thought maybe that had a lot to do with his company.

Eli teased her saying that he thought she was born that way, vicious, and Ashley twisted her head to the side, quirking an eyebrow at him. "Is that supposed to be a good thing or are you trying to make me feel self-conscious about it?" She asked, an easy smile on her lips. She couldn't help it. Being with Eli like this felt right. They were smiling and laughing together, bumping one another, talking and teasing like the last half year hadn't even happened. She couldn't be more relieved about that. More than anything else, Ashley missed moments like this where she could relax and simply be. With Eli. After she touched his shoulder, teasing him a little, Eli reached out and took a leaf that was in her hair. He said it wasn't bad, but she could tell he was going to say something else. She laughed, "Yeah, I guess you're right about that." Ashley let the joke go, freezing a little when Eli reached forward to another leaf out of her hair. Smiling wider, she scooted a little bit closer to he wouldn't have to reach so far. Ashley closed her eyes as he pulled the leaves out, smiling as she realized that she liked how it felt to have him mess with her hair so he could get the leaves. Eventually he stopped and she opened her eyes, smiling at Eli. "Thanks. That would have been a nightmare to do on my own," Ashley admitted. She took his hand when he stood up again, letting him help her to her feet. Ashley nodded, laughing as she looked at the pile. "Poor thing. We destroyed it." Chuckling a little more, she added, "Well, that was probably more my fault than yours since I did tackle you ..." She glanced up, watching the leaves fall when Eli tossed them up. When he started kicking a few of them, she rolled her eyes a little. "I've always liked stepping on them," Ash admitted, jumping forward a little and giggling at the crunching sound. It was very satisfying to hear the crunch of leaves after one stepped -or jumped- on them. She shivered a little and glanced to the sky, grimacing a little when she realized that sundown would probably happen in the next hour or so. It was going to get cold out here, which she was not prepared for, since she hadn't planned on coming outside after the feast. Then again, Ash wouldn't have changed this for the world. Turning her attention back to Eli, she cocked her head to the side. "Have you ever played that game where you're not supposed to move your feet?" She asked, knowing she was being vague. She'd played it all the time with Joe growing up. He almost always won. "I mean, it's a two-person game. You both plant your feet kind of firmly, facing one another," she started to explain, placing her feet shoulder width apart, trying to show Eli what to do. "Then you kind of ... well you hold hands," Ash blushed a little, she wasn't trying to hold her hand, she'd never really thought about it before, it was just part of the game. "And you try and push or pull the other person until they lose their balance. The first person to move their feet from their original position loses." She shrugged a little nervously, "Does that make any sense? I just ... thought of it and thought it might be fun. If you wanna try, that is." Ashley offered a challenging smile, hoping Eli would take her up on the idea. She hadn't thought of it as a way to be close to him again, but now that she explained it, she wanted to play. She'd probably lose- she normally did with Joe- but it seemed like the kind of game Eli would enjoy. Elijah Theron Fleming

CATCHING HIS BREATH, ELI ALMOST BACKTRACKED. Afraid that he'd overstepped and insulted Ashley for a second. However, one look at the smile on her face and he breathed easily again. "It's a good thing," He assured her with a laugh, hand coming up to his chest. "I swear." And then he was carefully plucking the leaves from her hair, watching as her eyes slipped closed and she shifted closer to him. The exchanged lodged itself somewhere in his chest and he was almost sad when there were no more leaves to retrieve.
"No problem." He muttered under his breath, a soft smile on his face. And then he turned back towards the pile, "Yup, definitely your fault." He agreed jokingly, kicking up loose leaves and laughing when Ashley jumped forward and crunched bundles under her feet. It was a few extra moments where they were simply laughing and enjoying themselves. Eli felt like he was floating on air, but soon enough the pile was destroyed beyond recognition and they had to think of something else to do.
"Uh, I don't think so..." Eli said with a curious frown, turning to face Ashley as she stepped up to him. He'd played a lot of games with Atticus over the years, but never this one specifically. As instructed, he planted his feet, laughing slightly at the mystery of it. He held out his hands easily, gripping hers, his thumb instinctively running over the back as they stood facing one and other.
For a moment, Eli simply processed the rules of the game. His body hummed with excitement. Though he was not a particularly competitive boy, he still enjoyed a bit of good natured jest. Eyes narrowing playfully as he pushed slightly at Ashley's hands. "Steady, huh?" He said with faux seriousness. "This might be harder than I thought..." And then quickly, he bent his torso forward, almost headbutting her and losing his balance in an attempt to shock her off her feet. "Boo!" He breathed, their noses almost brushing as he pushed himself forward and pulled her hands closer to him.

Ashley wasn't entirely sure how being vicious was a good thing, but she didn't argue when Eli said that it was. If he wasn't saying that it was bad, she was definitely going to believe him. Smiling and nodding as he promised that he wasn't kidding and then picking the leaves out of her hair and saying it wasn't a problem. Of course it wasn't a problem it was just something she hadn't expected him to do, and definitely something that would have taken ta while to do herself. She made a face at Eli when he said that the pile being destroyed was her fault, but didn't say anything in return, instead having too much fun jumping on the leaves while she could, until they were all dispersed. Spending time with Eli like this, happy and carefree, made her feel happy and whole. Ashley couldn't believe she'd spent a month fighting against getting this back. Eli didn't know her game, but that didn't seem to be a deterrent for him. He started to follow her directions as she explained them, not hesitating when she mentioned the holding hands, or teasing her about it. Ashley's heart started to race when she felt his thumb on the back of her hand. Her own hands tightened around his a bit as she prepared herself for the game to start. Sure, she almost always lost this game with Joe, but if Eli didn't know it ... well maybe she'd get lucky. In the very least maybe she'd be able to get him interested enough that they'd play for a bit. He was teasing her. Ashley could almost see the interest and excitement in his eyes as he pushed her hands a little. She let them give, moving closer to her for a moment before pushing them back to their original position. That was part of the trick of this game. Knowing when to give and when to push back. "You doubting your balancing abilities?" Ashley teased, gasping when he suddenly moved forward, whispering "Boo". He was so close she could kiss him, but he was still playing the game, and that wasn't the point. She rocked forward a little, offering no resistance until she had her balance under control. Then she pushed both of her hands forward, hoping to make him tip backwards. She giggled, unable to keep her composure right now. It was hard when the two of them were so close. They hadn't been so close since their kiss last spring and that thought caused her to start blushing. Ashley started moving her hands a little more, pushing as she moved them up and down, trying to distract him enough that he wouldn't notice her face. Still, she couldn't get over the fact of how close they were. This might be her new favorite game. Elijah Theron Fleming
