Summer 2024
Xavier sat on the steps for just a moment long. He’d finally let Harper pass him on the steps so she could retreat to her room and he was stuck with feelings of frustration and annoyance with the conversation he’d had with his sister. She’d seemed genuinely hurt by the words that’d come from him, even though it’d taken him a minute to realize it and even if he hadn't meant them as maliciously as she’d seemed to take them. But of course, that was her problem. She took offense where she shouldn’t have, and he was supposed to feel sorry about it. He didn’t; honestly, but he couldn’t feeling frustrated that it was expected. Not only that, she expected him to think for her too. He stood and began his trek down the stairs. He didn’t really feel like dealing with Ondina; Harper had done a poor job of that so he didn’t expect any interactions with her to go pleasantly. It wasn’t until he hit the bottom of the stairs that he heard it. The sound of Ondina’s heavy breathing, not quite able to get enough air into her lungs to maintain some sort of equilibrium, that his brow furrowed. Was she about to go into a fit? He turned the corner just enough to stand at the edge of the room and observe. Her potion was only a summoning away so it wouldn’t take much for her to return to normal. Had Harper left her like this? He couldn’t imagine their sister doing so, so what had Ondina done? Yelling at Harper may have been just enough to set her off. She’d gotten like this before, gotten into an argument with one of them before going into a spasm. It never stopped her though. Then again, he didn’t think there was anything short of death that would make her be more careful. He leaned against the wall, watching and waiting, seeing if the wheezing would pass.

YELLING AT HARPER HAD LEFT ONDINA IN A BIT of a state, but she didn't regret it. Not even as she was forced to place her head between her knees, as every breath was like a razor cutting a wound in the back of her pin-headed throat. She'd already taken her medicine before, another phial would only lessen her symptoms a little bit. Plus, it was like a challenge as she attempted to even her breathing on her own.
Spitting a glob of foamy saliva on to the ground between her knees, Ondina squeezed her eyes shut and attempted to chase away the faintness in her head. Luckily, after a few moments, the tightness eased a fraction. Ondina kept her head between her knees until she was sure she wouldn't choke, chest still heaving but her vision clearer as she pulled her hair away from her face and lifted her head. The light nipped her eyes and a spell of dizziness made her sway, but the room was silent finally.
'Screw Harper', Ondina thought viciously, her hands shaking as she wiped smudges of lipstick from the corners of her mouth. It was then that she caught sight of a flash of red in her peripheral vision. She whipped around, expecting Harper, but finding Xavier. "Jesus, Xavier!" She croaked, a hand against her chest. "Stop creeping around, you little spider." She curled her lip over her teeth, gripping the back of the sofa as she glared at him haughtily.
Xavier had a quietness about him that Ondina had never appreciated. Like a ghost, it was as if he was never truly corporal. She didn't like how it was virtually impossible to keep tabs on him. "What do you want?!" She snapped after a moment, a hand reaching up to grasp her throat as she felt it flex uncomfortably. Her encounter had taken it out of her and she slumped back down on the sofa before she could lash out at Xavier too. She wanted her dad. Or someone whose company she did find completely abhorrent. "Never mind, I don't care."

He continued to monitor the chain of events, watching her hold her head between her knees and seeing the staccato movements of her torso as she attempted to regain her composure. He heard her spit on the floor and pulled his wand out of his pocket, ready to summon her medicine in a moment when her breathing didn't even out. He didn't even give a second thought to the underage magic laws. This was life or death, and they wouldn't be able to tell for certain that it was his wand the spell had come from.
There was no change in her breathing but moments later she was sitting up on the couch and he still didn't put his wand away. There was never any accurate prediction on when her breathing would return back to normal or take a turn for the worse so he'd better stay prepared for it. At the moment, he knew she'd finally noticed him in the room, her head turning around with the quickness one displayed when surprised. The spasm surely must have thrown her off because even the insult she hurled at him fell flatter than normal. He normally didn't care about them, regardless, but this one wasn't even clever. He stood up from the wall then as she proceeded to berate him, relaxing his wand hand and wishing he'd gone upstairs and risked seeing Harper's hurt face once again as opposed to this. His eyes met her's once again, a bored look on his face as she finished her yelling.
”Good. You seem have more pressing matters anyway.” He was referring to the fact that she still must have been in pain; the way she was gripping her neck meant that this bout hadn't quite passed. ”Your medicine or would you rather exacerbate it by continuing your attempts at insulting me?” he managed to keep any concern out of his voice, asking the question with a cool acknowledgement. He walked towards her and pointed his wand at the floor, casting a quick cleaning charm to rid the area of the glob of saliva she'd ejected.

THE MARKED DIFFERENCE BETWEEN XAVIER'S common reaction to Ondina and Harper's, calculated Ondina's waning tolerance for her either of her siblings. Harper was easily manipulated, so emotional that Ondina almost always got a reaction out of her, though not always the one she wanted. Xavier was so flat there was practically no depth to him at all. Like a smooth talking robot with flaming Weasley hair. Ondina hated him for it.
"I don't need your advice," She croaked, turning her nose up as she turned and slumped back down on the sofa. She would need her medicine soon, but she'd be damned if she took cues from her baby brother. She watched him clean the floor at her feet and felt her scowl grow. "Don't you have parts to replace?" She said snidely, brows lifted. "Joints to oil..." She twisted against the arm of the sofa and threw her legs on to the sofa and rested her head back enough to see her brother's stiff frame upside down. "Tin-Man." She hissed at him, wrinkling her nose as her bird-bone chest continued to judder at an unnatural rhythm.

The next words out of his mouth made him exhale slowly, bringing him back to the conversation he’d just had with Harper. The right words from the wrong person. If there was anyone who should be taking anyone’s advice at the moment, it was Ondina. Her recklessness was going to get her killed, whether that be her extracurricular activities with the Purifiers or her impulses that caused the spasms she had. ”That’s a change of pace,” he mumbled sarcastically, moving his hands and his wand back into his pockets. His eyes pierced her as she continued on with attempts to bait him for a response. Her insults fell flat, once again, his mind racing past them and focusing on the fact that she was still breathing far too heavily. For her to At the very least, she wasn’t getting up to move around. ”Focus, Ondina. Breathe.” Once again his words held no semblance of concern in them, nor was there any note of sharpness in them. Ondina couldn’t be commanded, and he surely didn’t feel a bead of sympathy for her.. Instead, he just stood over her, watching and waiting for her wheezing to stop. There wasn’t a spell for that, unfortunately. ”Medicine or no?”

ONDINA HAD LONG SINCE RESIGNED HERSELF TO her poor respiratory system. The hiccuping of her failing lungs a common enemy, so when she lay down, chest still heaving, it went somewhat unnoticed. She'd already pinned her attention on her brother instead, head bent so that she could watch him in reverse as he took out his wand, his monotone voice telling her to focus. She scoffed loudly and rolled her eyes, lifting a hand to her chest and settling it there.
"I don't need your monotone mantra's, Xavier," Ondina informed him in a gruff sing-song voice, shifting her gaze and looking at the ceiling instead. It had more emotion in it. "I've seen more life in a dead muggleborn." Her ignorant choice of insult came as a way to try and incite more of a reaction from him. She didn't look at first, but lifted her head after a moment when silence drew her wavering attention span.
She tiled her chin to find his shadow looming over her uncomfortably. His face long and cold from her sunken angle. She reached back and arm to slap at his side. "Get out of my light, freak!" She snapped, unwilling to move but disliking the coldness in his stare. "I'd rather choke," She said very slowly, over-enunciating for effect, though echoed by a wheeze as she breathed. She was not fooled by her brother's failing attempt at caring. Or, spouting facts. She didn't know how he saw it, just that she didn't like it. There was no feeling behind it, and she hated that. It was like talking to an automated voice.

Listening to the way she continued her attempted insults, he wondered for moment how Ondina insulted anyone and got a rise out of it. Harper was easy; she was sensitive in ways he didn’t understand when it came to Ondina. Anyone else? He couldn’t see it. Even still, he held his tongue, choosing not to dignify her comment with a response. That was how she had riled herself up in the first place, getting upset with Harper, it seemed. And anything he had to say was sure to irritate her, considering the fact that she couldn’t irritate him equally. She wasn’t looking any better, still wheezing and pumping her chest in short bursts to breath. He waved his wand wordlessly and seconds later her medicine flew into his hand. The liquid in the glass vial only came to halfway up the bottle, he realized as he examined it. She bit out some words about where he was standing, calling him a freak and mentioning she’d rather choke. Maybe his silence wasn’t really helping the situation. He gave her another once over before he set the potion down on the floor near to where she was. Considering she was laying down on the couch, it was well within reach for her to grab it if she needed it. If she really would rather choke, at least she had the choice. He’d done his part. His eyes stayed trained on her, placing his hands in his pockets again, and he didn’t move from his position despite her complaints. Like a the child she was, he’d sit there and watch her to make sure she didn’t die.

THE FACT THAT XAVIER LINGERED NO MATTER how hard Ondina tried to shake him just irritated her all the more. In her experience, the more awful she was, the less likely people were to stick around. She employed this tactic often, but Xavier was devoid of any normal, human emotion. He unsettled Ondina, and she realised that was probably why Elaine found him interesting. Like a shiny new toy, with different settings and buttons. She couldn't tell if he stuck around to bother her, or because he cared. She doubted it was the latter.
After sitting in silence for some time, his looming frame like a shadow she hadn't earned, Ondina snapped and sat up. "What is your problem?" She asked, deceptively calm, her nose wrinkling as she shot him a look of withering disgust. "You don't care about me." She shook her head as if it was obvious, lifting both hands to smooth her sweaty hair away from her face, twisting it in to a bun before letting it drop back down her back and unravel. "Is dad paying you and Harper in shifts?" She snorted, her eyes turning to glare at the bottle of medicine he'd retrieved and placed mutely on the coffee table.
"If I take it, will you leave?" She asked hoarsely, tonguing her teeth as she looked at him, still raw and red around her nose and eyes. She wasn't the type to compromise, but she waited to see what he'd say none-the-less. She'd killed someone that day, for Elaine- no, that wasn't true. She'd done it to preserve her own image, to keep what she was doing a secret. As she waited for Xavier's answer, she wondered if he'd do the same. Or if he cared half as much about his public image. She doubted it. And she hated him because of that.

She was just being dramatic now, he thought to himself, as she insisted that he didn’t care about her. He imagined himself rolling his eyes but kept his face straight, his hands in his pockets, as he continued to monitor her for the telltale signs of her getting worse. It annoyed him, true, that she held onto the notion that he didn’t care about her because he wouldn’t be standing there if he didn’t. At least, logic would indicate that but then again he knew that Ondina didn’t operate on logic. And, he had to admit, there were times when he truly didn’t care. This was not one of them. Ignoring her comment concerning their father, he watched her glower follow to the table where the potion that would end her suffering sat and his breathing remained even and calm with the thought that she just might take it so that he could return to the peace of his bedroom. Harper had to have retreated to her bedroom by now which meant he wouldn’t have to deal with either of them. And then the words he wanted to hear left her on a breath that sounded pitiful, even though what he felt was anything but. ”We’ll see.” Spoken evenly, he waited to see if she would actually follow through, to see how much longer he would have to stick around and watch her let herself suffer out of stubborn pride he didn’t understand. She was bargaining because his presence annoyed her but she was doing it at the risk of her health. He would never understand it. Disbelief welled up within him but he didn’t utter a word of what he was thinking.

THE PROBLEM WITH XAVIER WAS THAT HE HAD never been easy to manipulate, or predict. Which left Ondina with very few advantages to lord over him. She'd always been fairly skilled at getting under peoples skin, but so was Xavier in his own odd, unsettling way. Which meant they were well matched in a battle of wills. She sat stiff on the sofa, her pale skin covered in a sheen of sweat, feeling entirely childlike under his stoic expression. It was hard to believe that such a girl had used an Unforgivable Curse only hours before.
"'We'll see'," She mocked Xavier, in a high, hoarse voice, her nose scrunched as she glared at him. He had no right, she thought. But, it was an incredibly effective tool. His company - when unwelcome - was as hard to ignore as it was to be rid of. He used it like a weapon, just as Ondina had. She reached for the phial of medicine and ran her thumb over the rough glass shape of it before pulling the stopper off with her other hand.
Silently, she lifted it up to her lips, the relief of it almost within reach. But, just before she upended it in to her mouth, her eyes shifted back to Xavier and a thin smile wrinkled one corner of her mouth. Leaning away from the phial, Ondina held her arm high as she upended the glass, not in to her mouth, but all over the floor in front of her. She watched it trickle in a long, colourless stream, a misty consistency to its outer edges before it puddled like rainwater on the hardwood floor, seeping out to soak the rug as well. "We'll see just isn't good enough for me," She croaked with a loose shrug, though her lungs seemed to cry out at the loss of it, she felt utterly satisfied with herself.
