Hugo was definitely surprised by the angry girl storming down the hall. Obviously the paper meant a great deal to her and he'd hurt her feelings by dissing it. That was unintentional, but his apology ... well she shot that down too. He lifted an eyebrow at her when she insisted she didn't need his pity. He didn't pity her. He was trying to make something right that he'd obviously made wrong, but she was probably too angry to realize that. He didn't say anything.
She glanced around as she started to yell quietly and Hugo felt himself start to grow tense as she started to call him a liar. She accused him of lying about the paper and the pranks. Whatever. He'd never lied about his pranks, just found ways to avoid the questions, which she obviously didn't appreciated. She wanted a big scoop from him and was upset she hadn't gotten it. Then she called him a prat. While Hugo didn't like being called names, especially when he felt they weren't justified, he was starting to think that she was a bit immature. Once again, he said nothing. Partly because he didn't want to argue more with her and partly because he thought it might annoy her more if he didn't and suddenly, he found himself wanting to annoy her.
Jimmie flicked her hair and started walking away again and Hugo rolled his eyes. "That suits me just fine," Hugo answered. He wouldn't mind not having to endure her neverending questions again. "But, just as a warning, if you don't want people to insult your paper, you might want to try not pushing them so hard. Yes, reporters dig for their stories, but not everyone reacts to pressure the same way. Some people will give in, some people will fight back. If you're going to get offended every time someone jabs you back ... well, you might want to learn how to take your own medicine." He knew she wouldn't like that either, but Hugo didn't care. He gave a short nod, turned on his heel and walked away without a second glance. He had plenty going on in his life without Jimmie, and he was entirely confident in his ability to keep his pranks a secret. If she accused him without proof just to get back at him, he'd drag her paper through the mud and relish it. Hugo wasn't normally an angry kind of person, but she'd gotten a rise out of him by refusing to accept his apology. Two could play at this game.
