Liam watched his brother as River explained that he did like some of the things his parents wanted from him. Well, that was good. At least it meant that his brother wouldn’t be completely miserable following their parent’s instructions. He was a little surprised when River explained that he liked Vi, though Liam wasn’t about to say something about that. He smiled when his brother said he liked being a good duelist. “I’m glad. You going to do something with that when you graduate?” Liam was starting to realize that he didn’t know what his brother was going to do with himself once he graduated, and Liam found himself a little curious.
River said he didn’t know how Liam and Tamara started dating. His palms started to sweat. Liam hated telling stories, but he’d basically asked for this. Besides, he was trying to make River feel more comfortable around him. Liam could share his story, even though it was embarrassing and he was still somewhat ashamed of it. “I stole her from Ethan,” he muttered in a soft voice. He’d never been this blunt about it before, not even to himself. Ethan had been his best friend and Liam started dating Tamara when she was supposed to be dating Ethan.
He cleared his throat, “I liked her for years, but she was so pretty and good with words and flirty. Ethan liked her too. I didn’t realize that until they were dating. I tried to avoid them, but when he got attacked, we were both in the hospital wing and I kissed her. Things weren’t the same after that. We started dating in secret, then she broke up with Ethan. We still dated in secret and then he died. A few months later we made our relationship official.” Liam was looking at the table, a strange mix of shame and embarrassment filling him.

Liam asked if dueling was something River wanted to do after he graduated. River shrugged, "I'm not entirely sure. I don't think I want it to be a career thing," he explained. He would much rather use his dueling skills in desperate situations, not necessarily too often. "I'm thinking of the obliviation department", he explained. River had always been fascinated with memory spells. "But I'm still not sure," he added again.
Then as his brother prepared to speak about how he and Tamara started dating, River felt a sort of hush go over the room, in his subconscious. Liam uttered the words, about stealing her from Ethan. He went into more detail, explaining how he had always liked her, how he kissed her, and how they had dated before Ethan died. River nodded to that. River knew Ethan of course, they were in the same house. Everybody knew Ethan. He was the Quidditch captain. Still Ethan was incredibly friendly to all those around him. River furrowed his brow, "well maybe it was the right thing," he explained. He didn't think that he and Vi were ever going to have a real loving relationship, so the only way he ever was going to get something like that would be too... Date someone else while he was married to her. He wasn't crazy about the idea, but Vi had implied that she wanted their relationship to be that way. He shook his head, trying to stop thinking about himself. "If Ethan didn't approve maybe he would have come back as a ghost to haunt you." His eyes widened, "I don't mean that to freak you out, I just mean that hasn't happened so maybe you should take that as his acceptance." Ethan was back as a ghost for a while, but he didn't seem to care so much about Liam and Tamara's situation. Unless he didn't hear about it, but didn't dead people know stuff like that?

Liam nodded when River explained that he wasn't sure he wanted to duel as a career, but that he might be interested in the obliviation department. "That's a good place to start, even if you don't end up staying there forever." He knew a lot of people that did that. Started working for one department and then switched. Once you got started it was easier to do things like that. He smiled, "I think you'll do well no matter where you choose." Liam really meant it. He wasn't really one for giving compliments, especially if they weren't deserved, but he saw River as a good worker and determined. He'd likely succeed, no matter which way he went.
He paled when his brother mentioned Ethan coming back to haunt him if he didn't approve. "I thought that's why he came back," Liam muttered. When he heard that Ethan was back as a ghost, he'd been entirely convinced it was his fault. He was so nervous to talk to his best friend and explain everything. Of course, he eventually had and they worked it out, but that didn't make him feel better about it. Liam still felt a great deal of guilt over the way he and Tamara started. He cleared his throat, "I don't think many people know the real truth. Most people think we started dating after Ethan ... passed on." Liam still hated talking about what happened to his former best friend. He still missed Ethan, especially when something happened that he wanted to talk to about. Ethan was his go-to and even after more than a year that habit was hard to break.

River agreed, he didn't have to stay anywhere forever. Well, except for married to Vi. He would stay there forever. "Thanks, Liam," he answered as his brother said he'd do well wherever. River couldn't see that as clearly as his brother could, but he wanted to believe him.
Liam muttered that he had thought that this was the exact reason Ethans ghost came back, and Rivers eyes widened in horror that he had brought up his brothers fear. Liam said not many knew the real truth and River nodded a little. "But... if she's the right one for you, then I'm not sure I think it matters," he said. He wasn't sure why he felt so strongly about this. Maybe a part of him wanted that for himself. "It's all passed now. This is a good thing," he nodded firmly.
He was glad to spend some time with his brother talking about the things that really mattered. He hoped he could be a little more open the next time. But, for now, this was enough.
