26TH DECEMBER 2024
In an attempt to get away from her parents, Bryelle found herself escaping her London home quite often, replacing her dull view with the surroundings of the Winter festival. In the past few days she spent her time there with both Isabel and Lily, but this time decided to go alone. The Thursday she decided to go was rather chilled out in comparison to days prior, but the Goyle could only guess the reason being around Christmas’ departure. Deciding to start her day off exploring around, Bryelle eventually found herself strolling past the popular ice rink and even those who seemed to be having fun in the snowball fight.
But considering she wasn’t paying attention, as her body moved, her head and eyesight facing somewhere else - the Goyle was unaware that she was rather close to bumping into someone. And just before the collision, Bryelle noticed rather quickly, holding up her hands before she began to stutter. ”I-I’m so sorry.” Blue eyes looked up, noticing that she recognised the person she almost fell into. ”Nathaniel?” She smiled. ”Nathaniel Forrester? Who would’ve thought I would find you here?” From the things she knew about the Slytherin, aside from sharing classes with him - she knew he was rather quiet and definitely quick to jump on any gun.
Bryelle had never really spoken to him before aside from group class sessions in Charms or even asking for notes. But to her, he seemed like a pretty decent guy. ”How was your Christmas?”

WHILE NATE WAS HAPPY FOR THE FREEDOM being home offered him, he did not enjoy being in the orphanage for long periods of time. It was comfortable enough, warm enough, and he ate well, but it wasn't homely. Nate felt a cold detachment towards it, a very temporary piece of his life. As soon as he graduated, he fully intended to get his own place and earn so much money that he couldn't count the rooms of his home, but that took time. In the meantime, he escaped to the streets of London and sometimes, Hogsmeade.
The Winter Festival was perfect bait for a thief like Nate. He wore his hoodie with the deepest pockets and the heaviest hood, and took the train all the way to the station with the intention of filling up and fleeing without being seen by anybody he knew. He'd gotten a good haul and was heading towards the Three Broomsticks for a fizzy pumpkin juice, tossing a stolen snow globe up in the air when he almost collided with somebody. His steps stuttered slightly, skidding a bit on the icy cobblestones as she spoke in a rush.
"Huh..." He said at first, his face screwing in confusion as he leaned back and squinted down at the girl, who seemed pretty familiar with him. It took a moment to connect before he realised it was Bryelle Goyle. Gorgeous to look at, with piercing blue eyes and a funny glow about her. She was often smiling and that put him off a bit, but he nodded familiarly since she'd addressed him nicely enough. "Bry... elle, right?" He asked hesitantly, stuffing the snow globe in to his pockets as he straightened up. "You're in my Charms class." He said, as if confirming what he knew to himself.

It was a sheer coincidence that Bryelle bumped into the Slytherin, but it was a happy coincidence nevertheless. Aside from the collision that she was sure it would stir anyone’s mood. Although, blue eyes couldn’t help but lock gazes with the Slytherin for just a moment longer. Nathaniel was an attractive guy. Quiet, but attractive. Being open with her sexuality meant Bryelle usually tended to find almost anyone and everyone rather attractive, even some of her closes friends. But regardless, she remained quiet around the topic.
”Bri-elle” She said, correcting him on his pronunciation with a wink, but nodded soon after. ”Charms…Potions…Defence of the Dark Arts.” She added. ”We tend to share a lot of classes together. I believe I beat your top scores every now and then.” While Bryelle spoke, her eyes slightly narrowed while her lips twitched into a rather sly grin. From his body language, the Goyle couldn’t help but analyse the hostility or the tension in the air.
Looking down, the brunette noticed how his hands rested deep in his pockets as if he had something to hide. A brow rose but she refused to challenge the situation. ”I think I’m doing better than you currently though.” God, she loved to tease.

LIFTING HIS BROWS NATE MERELY NODDED ONCE, tongue in cheek as he shrugged it off. She was lucky he remembered her name at all, being a Gryffindor and all. He rarely socialised outside of his wheelhouse - in fact, he rarely socialised at all. Bar his small group of tolerable acquaintances. The less that knew him right now, the better. Though, with the way she winked at him cheekily, he didn't mind the intrusion as much as he thought he would.
"Yeah, right." He retorted, scoffing as he regarded her shrewdly. It was true though, a few times they were neck and neck. In fact, he knew the exact number of times she'd edged in front of him. 9 - and a half if he counted the time they drew until he was knocked out of a Potions project by his partners rubbish average. But, he didn't count that because it wasn't his fault. "Don't flatter yourself, babe." He kissed his teeth and stuffed his hands in his pockets, but he wasn't as annoyed as he thought'd he'd be. Merely irked.
"What're you talking about?" He said, frowning as he played dumb. His eyes dropping to where his hands were deep in his pockets, exactly where she looked - sly and smug. "Do you need to see my hands, Officer?" He quipped, quirking his brows lazily. He'd done this before, and he wasn't about to be rustled by a doll faced know-it-all. Not on his watch, nor the one he'd stolen.

In the attempts of being a social butterfly, Bryelle always tried to remember most people’s names. Difficult, common or plain old Jane. She only recalled the Slytherin’s name because of the countless times their scores had a difference in few points, one being the common number. In the classes they shared, Bryelle seemed to usually overtake his scores in Potions while he would most definitely beat her in Charms. She remembered all the times her tongue would push the inside of her cheek in annoyance.
The brunette couldn’t help but laugh at his response, her hand coming up to push her long locks behind her. ”How many times has it been now?” She questioned, her brows raising as she wondered, something she usually did. But really she already knew the answer. Ten. The time they drew was most definitely a win in her eyes, due to the Slytherin’s terrible choice in partner. ”And if I don’t who’s going to for me? Surely not you, babe.” She retorted, grin widening as she looked him over once more.
”Currently the top scorer in Potions.” She bragged, shoulders drawing into a brief shrug. With his next tease, the Goyle rolled her eyes — clearing her throat as she did so. She couldn’t help but be so observational. And with his stance presenting him as if he truly had something to hide, she couldn’t help but investigate. ”Not at all.” She smiled, pulling her eyes away from his face, looking amongst the crowd and the festivities. ”Buuut…” She followed, dragging out the word. ”I do need to know my Academic enemy just a little more. Only if you’re down.”

SHAKING HIS HEAD, NATE MAINTAINED HIS COCKY confidence as he shrugged his shoulders. "Not worth counting," He remarked, though he'd definitely counted, but she definitely didn't need to know that. "It's barely a challenge at this point." Though, he'd more than once envied her technique when dealing with an open top cauldron. But, he wasn't there to flatter her either, lest she think she could get the better of him.
"Yeah, that's true." He said, tongue in cheek. "I wouldn't hold your breath." But, she was right, he'd never compliment her willingly, especially now when they were technically opponents. That's what weak competitors did, as far as he was concerned. At least she was self-aware, he'd give her that. He barked a laugh as she called herself the top scorer, shaking his head at her sheer delusion. "Yeah, right!" He snapped, though his scowl was still curled in to a slight smirk.
Hands still in his pockets, Nate stubbornly refused to show them as she seemed to sway back and forth on how to proceed. "Oh, yeah?" He said, slowly pulling one hand out of his pocket, he revealed his middle finger to her, snickering slightly before he tucked them both back inside. "Are you asking me for a drink?" He said, almost aghast. He never expected a girl like Bryelle to give him the time of day, if he were honest. She seemed the type far more intrigued by purebloods and social status - two things he didn't have as a self-imposed outcast.

It felt refreshing, to note a personality from another could clash with her own. It was interesting to see the Slytherin’s reaction, even after Bryelle was ninety-nine percent sure her grades were seemingly better than his own. Perhaps he had cheated in his tests? It seemed fitting for a boy with his kind of behaviour. Then again it seemed fitting for herself too. ”Definitely worth counting.” She remarked, lifting a finger to rest on the corner of her upturned lips, a smile sitting comfortably. ”A challenge is a challenge regardless of the numbers.” She added, moving her finger so she could inspect her fingernails. Lily was right, she did need one of those Muggle things. A manicure. ”Though with our tie we have going, I think I’ll win by the end of summer.” She smirked.
The laugh he had barked was returned with dark brows raising, watching as his smirk matched her own. This was definitely going to be interesting. Bryelle wasn’t exactly the competitive type, given how she was raised amongst her brother: to simply be smarter than her parents and somewhat like others. But when a challenge stared her in the face…How couldn’t she resist? ”Did you need proof of any sorts?” She questioned. Bragging had only brought her so far, the brunette couldn’t dare back down from the potential competition at hand.
While the Goyle was rather curious to where his prying hands laid, she didn’t press on the subject. It was none of her business and the Gryffindor figured she didn’t know her competitor too well to question him. Maybe on how his scores in Charms was rather…Excellent but that was pretty much all. Light eyes rolled at his remark, the middle finger proving how much of a jerk he potentially was or a teasing git. Either way, Bryelle found it hilarious and cracked a soft snort. ”Maybe. But with that action, I might be considering otherwise.” She joked. ”I’m kidding. Sort of. Though I did mean what I said before. I am trying to know my enemy just a bit better. Maybe one day we’ll actually be friends.” Bryelle was used to sticking with a crowd filled with loud individuals, picking up their traits along with blending her own. But maybe a change was needed. A quiet friend from time to time.

NATE WOULD NOT BE BESTED, HE'D DECIDED. Especially since he felt entirely positive that, overall, he was beating her in terms of scores. He achieved mostly Outstanding in his OWL's and had never handed in a poor piece of schoolwork. At least, as far as his estimations went. The fact that she challenged that infuriated and spurred him on all at once. He narrowed his eyes at her dreamy little smirk. "Know that's what I call wishful thinking," He drawled, rolling his eyes in exaggeration as she teased him with her own sense of superiority.
"You don't have any proof," He said confidently, he postured arrogantly. "If you're one up on me now," He shrugged his shoulders easily, kissing his teeth as he forced himself to laugh drily, "You won't be for long, you never are." Which had been true for the first few years that they'd shared classes, because Nate always paid attention to the kinds of students who challenged his position as top scorer. She'd beat him a few times, but never more than twice in a row on his count. He'd surpassed that against her multiple times, so he felt like he'd already won. But, not enough to give up such a challenge. "But, by all means..." His smirk turned wicked, eyes glinting as he leaned towards her, his voice lowering an octave. "Be my guest."
That being said, Bryelle was still one of the best looking girls in his year. When she hinted at the prospect of a drink, he went along with it easier than he might otherwise have. Lured by a pretty face. Nodding his head, tongue in cheek, Nate gave Bryelle a look with humour in his eyes. "Friends?" He said, making a point of snorting at the idea, though they were walking side by side instinctively - heading towards The Three Broomsticks. "Maybe I don't want to be your friend..." Nate quirked his brows at her, tucking his hands back in to his pockets.

BRYELLE'S INTENTIONS FOR the day was simple. Before bumping into the Forrester she came to the decision to simply have fun with her day. Whatever anything hit her in the face with, she'd hit it back with excitement. The Slytherin's appearance on the other hand changed that idea. Was it a little dangerous of her to piss off someone she barely knew, the same person who was beating her by a hair in both of their academics? Maybe. Did she care? Definitely not. Though the Goyle now knew if her scores were suddenly tampered with, Nathaniel would be the culprit. ”Wishful thinking…” She repeated in a murmur, the phrase foreign on her tongue. She felt offended at his words, but knew there was no need to — especially with her confidence to see her scores thrive by the time Summer arrived. ”If I can’t dream for the best, then what’s the point in a challenge?” She questioned, eyes settling down on him, a smile tugging her lips at his annoyance.
While he was right, Nate was still most certainly wrong. Even if she didn’t have the proof right now, it didn’t mean she couldn’t show him somehow within the Winter Break. Potentially an Owl would have sufficed, a report stating their current scores in the Potion class, a way to fuel her cockiness and have something to draw on his mind for the next few weeks. ”Do too.” She responded, mocking his postured arrogance with a raised brow, her arms folding. ”If I’m always challenging your scores doesn’t that mean…You’re never there for long either?” She asked, one of the hands that was tucked into her folded arms reaching out, a finger pressing against her chin as she spoke, mimicking the ways people looked as if they were in thought.
Feigning a pout, Bryelle’s arms uncrossed, flapping by her side in a childish manner. She had always wanted a Slytherin acquaintance…Friend…Rival? Even if he was a little cute and quiet. Or a complete asshole. ”You don’t?” She questioned. He barely even knew her! Bryelle liked to think she wasn’t all that bad. Maybe a little too loud…Or a little too mean at times. But a few apologies could change that. ”Then we can be…Not-not friends?” She suggested, the grin that settled on her lips filled with mischievousness. Their walk moved to the direction to The Three Broomsticks, where Bryelle loved to settle down in and have a good Butterbeer. Just like the next odd student. ”Or maybe we could keep this rivalry going for a little longer.” Throwing a wink in his direction, she truly wondered aside from the idea of losing first spot in the top of his classes…What else irritated the Forrester?

NATE DIDN'T 'DREAM' TO BE THE BEST AND HE criticised Bryelle's imagination for doing so. Because, there really was no other option for Nate, as far as he was concerned. He would strive to be the best or nothing more. And he didn't mind stepping on heads to make the climb either. Not even ones as pretty as hers. They would never be equals, he thought. Not if he had anything to do with it.
"The point of the challenge is to win," Nate shrugged, a slight scrunch to his nose as he looked down it at her. But, it wasn't an attack of her character. Rather, it was a simple observation. His mentality so ingrained in him that it felt utterly true. And if she had a point about his position at the top, he didn't say so, simply scoffing at her as he turned his face away. "I'm there longer than you are." He muttered defensively, feeling more than a little exposed as she cornered him. It was impressive, and probably the only reason he viewed her as an almost worthy opponent. She should enter in to debate or something, he thought. But, he didn't say that. He didn't want her argumentative skills improving.
Though it appeared as blatant flirting - and perhaps it was. Nate was also telling the truth. He didn't really want her to be his friend. He had a couple of 'friends', and he certainly didn't want her getting close enough to him to steal his studying tactics. "I don't have any.. Not-Not Friends," Nate noted after a moment, his bottom lip pouting out slightly as he pretended to think about it for a moment. She was trying to be charming, he was sure of it. But, they did say keep your enemies closer. "I like the rivalry, actually." He said as they began to walk side-by-side. "Keeps winning interesting, you know?" And then he returned her wink with a smirk of his own. "Plus, I like the sour look on your face when I take the top spot... again."

DREAMS WERE THE only thing the Goyle thought were worthy. To truly be believed in. In comparison to her brother, Bryelle focused on her imagination, something many would view as childish, driven on make believe over reality. While Renard…He had always been driven by focus and action, using his knowledge to the best of his ability and the younger Goyle once followed a similar lifestyle…Until she met Lily Potter. Lily expressed another way of looking into things, to look into the lighter aspect of a person’s failure, to be carefree and let stress wash over the next wizard or witch. Bryelle adapted easily but still let the emotion cloud her judgement from time to time. Exams happened to be the biggest competitor. ”Fair.” She responded, the twitch of her lips having no intention to fade away soon.
”Though…” She trailed off into a pause, her finger lifting as if she had an idea. Or a snarky remark. ”The challenge hasn’t exactly ended yet. Sure, we’re on the Winter Break now but…Exams and OWLs are only around the corner. Maybe I’ll prove myself then.” And she had every intention to do so. Even if he had a point, his position held higher on the class charts longer than her own results, it didn’t mean the Slytherin didn’t have other competition, like that quiet American transfer who weaved her way into Ravenclaw. If Bryelle wasn’t competing against her scores with Nathaniel, it was the quiet girl. ”In Charms…A true point. Potions…I tend to have the upper hand. Until that Ilvermorny transfer girl takes both positions. The Ravenclaw one.”
The saying keep your enemies closer than your friends was one Bryelle had every intention of doing so. Nathaniel wasn’t exactly an enemy, someone Bryelle despised or wanted to kill but a simple mere…Educational rival. While her attempts at flirting fell short, she couldn’t help but shake her head and release a gentle laugh at the sight of his pouting bottom lip, a slight ugly sight to see - along with the joke he held around their rivalry. ”Nothing pleases me more than the crease of your little forehead-“ She began, pointing up at his pale forehead. ”-Showing how irritated you get whenever my name takes that top spot.” With a grin, her head moved, her eyes pulling away from him and focusing on everything before them. ”Maybe one day you’ll take me up on the offer. When you swallow your pride and allow me to be the first Not-not friend you have.”

THE FACT THAT BRYELLE AGREED WITH NATE AT all was a victory in and of itself. And it showed on his smarmy face, the lift of his brows, the quirk at the corner of his thin, wicked lips. He didn't say anything, but sometimes silence was better than anything that could be said in one. However, that single lifted finger dropped Nate's smile and his mouth opened in a harried sigh.
"You think?" He said with drawling sarcasm. His nose scrunching slightly as his smile turned cruel. "Sounds like another fruity dream of yours, babe." Though, that wasn't necessarily true as Bryelle had shown her academic prowess more than once. She could very well smash her exams, but Nate was just driven even further to proving her wrong just because she'd said such a thing. Though, a part of him wondered who exactly she was 'proving' herself to. He filed that away to use at a later date, when it would land the hardest.
"Who?!" Nate asked with a harsh laugh. Of course he'd noticed someone smashing it out of the park in class, but he mostly paid attention to his own work. Potions was one of the few classes he had a lot of room for improvement. A class he actually had to try in. And sometimes, it showed. When Bryelle pointed at Nate's forehead, he almost smacked it away, but refrained.
"Touch me and I'll bite your fucking hand off." He told her in a lazy drawl, quirking his brows as if to dare her. Nate only liked being touched when he initiated it. Otherwise, it made his skin crawl. But, she didn't. It seemed like she was mostly making a point. He sort of liked the gall of it, but he'd never say as much.
"You wanna hold my hand, Brie?" He said with a doughy expression, though his eyes were hard as flint. "Braid each others hair?" His face collapsed in a derisive snort and he took a very deliberate step backwards, leaving while he felt like he was winning. "Maybe that's because you... wanna prove something to me, right?" He threw his head back and his adam's apple jerked with a hard laugh. "In your fucking dreams, Goyle!" And then he turned and walked away.
[END?]
