Riley walked down the stairs and saw Kinsey standing by a mirror, looking at herself. He then saw why, she had put on the earrings that he got her. He descended the last of the steps and walked over to her, “They look lovely on you, just like I thought they would.” he admitted, totally and completely forgetting about the ring on his finger which symbolized his engagement to a woman who wasn’t her. All of this time alone with her had been so wonderful and it had only been 4 days. They had another week all to themselves before the rest of the school would return, it felt like a lifetime, but also like a minute.
“Yeah, let’s go.” he agreed. She linked arms with him which further pushed the memories of his fiancee to the back of his mind. He was here with her, and there wasn’t anything else that he wanted to think about. “So does your family have any christmas traditions that you’re missing out on today?” he asked her as they walked down the stairs.

Riley told her that he thought the earrings looked nice on her and Kinsey couldn't help the small blush that covered her cheeks. "They're beautiful. Thank you again, Riley." She knew she sounded a little formal, but she couldn't help it. The smile he was giving her was sincere and real, the kind of smile she'd seen hundreds of times when they were dating. Kinsey's heart started to beat more rapidly.
The pair started to walk down to the Great Hall and Kinsey shrugged at his question, "I mean, not really. We always wake up and have a Christmas breakfast together and then we open our presents. After that, we normally spend the day together. Most of the time that's something outside. We were always making snowmen or having snowball fights because that's what Dustin-" Her throat suddenly tightened when she said her brothers name, making it hard for Kinsey to continue. She hadn't mentioned her brother to anyone but Toby over the last several months. Kinsey coughed, trying to clear her throat before continuing, "those were his favorite activities." She finished quickly, not wanting to think about how he was the reason she hadn't gone home this year. Kinsey hoped that with her absence, her brother would be willing to go home and see the family, since she knew he didn't want to see her. "What about you?" Kinsey asked, not wanting to think about Dustin more.

Kinsey started to explain what he family usually did on Christmas day and he nodded along, but he tensed up also when she mentioned Dustin, her brother, whom he had never met. Riley didn’t know why, but he knew that Kinsey and her brother had some sort of falling out and things had been tense since then. Seeing Kinsey get tense made him the same way. It was an impulse reaction. She stopped talking quickly and changed the conversation to his family. “We don’t spend a lot of time as a unit. We open gifts together for a very short amount of time, and then we separate until dinner, usually. And we normally have guests or we go to another family's house for dinner.” he explained. Christmas for the Fudge family was a social occasion as much as any party or anything else. “It’s all very formal. Very proper.” he added. Suits and dresses. All the stops were pulled out, no expense was spared when it came to making a good impression.

Kinsey could feel Riley tense up when she mentioned Dustin. Was that because she was now tense or did he know anything about what happened during the summer? She couldn't imagine how he would know anything, unless he ran into one of the triplets and they told him something. Either way, she was relieved when he started talking about his own family. Her eyebrows furrowed a little and she looked up to Riley as he explained that they normally did things on their own. She looked away, sure she looked a little awe-struck when he mentioned going to proper, formal parties with his family. Those were the kinds of parents she was sure his parents didn't want him attending with someone like her, which hurt but Kinsey didn't want to think about it. "So what do you normally do with your time on Christmas?" She wouldn't be surprised if he read or something, but Kinsey was curious. "Do you like the parties?" she asked, wanting to know a little more about him.

She asked what he usually did with his own time on Christmas and he shrugged, “read.” he admitted. It was what he did all of the time when he was home. That was how he got through so many books and learned the skills that he knew and that were going to carry him through his future. “No I hate the parties. I hate going to those things, they’re not really my style.” honestly, at one point he had liked them. It used to be fun to go and get to talk to the other kids he knew who were in the same social circle. However, that stopped a few years ago, when he started to catch on to the kinds of politics that his parents and brother were engaged in.
They made it to the great hall and spent a lot of time there eating and laughing and just spending some time with one another. They spent most of the day together, actually. It was the best Christmas that Riley Fudge had ever had.
