The next thing she knew, Jack was shaking his head and smiling at her, saying that he wanted to dance. Mazie wasn't going to argue the fact with him, especially since she really wanted to dance in his arms, but she felt a little guilty. What if he felt trapped into it or something? That definitely hadn't been her intention. However, her train of thought was completely derailed when Jack let go of her hand, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her closer. Mazie went with the movement, her breath catching in surprise, but her own hands easily slid into place on his shoulders, then wrapping behind his neck, a surprised smile on her lips. Being so close to Jack was a completely new feeling, but she liked it. For once, she didn't notice that she was being almost completely still. She didn't want to do anything to break the moment or make him feel like he had to pull away. She laughed softly when he teased her about "the game". She shook her head, unable to wipe the smile from her face. "You are such a punk," she muttered under her breath, glancing away for a second. "Fine, I'll play your game." They'd always played games together, the games just changed over the years and she was very interested to see where this one would go. "So are we going to at least sway to the music?" Mazie teased lightly, trying to lighten the mood. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie seemed confused at first and then gave into it, rolling her eyes and calling him a punk. Maybe he was. But he didn’t mind too much, and he had a feeling that she didn’t either. She rested her arms on his shoulders and then let them wrap around his neck. He smirked as she did, happy that she was okay to go along with his little act of intimacy. Maybe she was interested in him in the same way that he was starting to think that he was interested in her. He wondered where this came from, however, he hadn’t remembered liking her like this back at Ilvermorny. “It’d be a lot more fun if you did.” he teased, offering a playful little wink. “I mean if you want. I thought it’d be fun to just stand still but… if you insist...” he shrugged and then started to sway with her slowly, turning in slow circles, letting the music move them.

Mazie wanted to remember how this felt. Jack's hands around her waist, his eyes smiling down at her as he teased her like always. She felt alive in a way she hadn't felt before and she loved the sensation. It was strange, though. She and Jack were always pretty close back at Ilvermorny, getting into some mischief, but things seemed to be a little different now. She wasn't sure if it was because she'd been apart from anyone her age for so long or if maybe she'd always felt this way, but she felt drawn to Jack. She quirked an eyebrow at him, "I guess I'm down for a bit more fun," she quipped with a smirk, lightly tugging on a lock of his shaggy hair. It was easy with her hands right there and also a perfect way to tease him back. She laughed, shaking her head when he teased her more about actually moving. Not so surprisingly, she liked it when they swayed even more. The pressure of his hands at her waist changed slightly with each step and she felt so aware of every move. Fabulous. She looked up at him, meeting his eyes with an easygoing smile. She loved his smile and the peace between them in this moment, but Mazie also couldn't stay silent for forever. "Soooo, is there anything fun you discovered last semester that I should know about? Any cool people?" Her fingers absentmindedly started playing with the locks of hair hanging there as she waited for him to say something. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

She began to wrap little locks of his hair around her fingers and his body tingled at the sensation. He had dated before, he had danced with girls before and been close to them like this before, but this still felt like an oddly new sensation. Jack tried not to read into it. He knew better than to read into things like that with Mazie. She was just glad to be here with her friends again. He tried to remind himself. But it was hard to see this as just a friendly activity. Jack was completely happy to just remain in this silent bliss with her as they swayed. But she started asking questions. He shrugged, “There’s a lot cool here. A bunch of secret passageways. A cute little village down the mountain a bit, some ghosts.” he shrugged. Not much that Ilvermorny didn’t also have. “Yeah there are some cool people too. I can introduce you. You’ll like them.” he decided, specifically, he thought of Ana, but the thought of her made him feel awkward right now.

At least the dancing wasn't a bad thing. Jack was smiling now and Mazie was relieved. All she wanted was for them to have a good evening together. She wanted it to be worth breaking the rules, since she knew they were out after curfew. It was worth it to her. Mazie was rapidly realizing that something about her feelings for Jack changed. She didn't know why or when exactly, but she was starting to wonder if she might like him as more than a friend, though she knew that was a dangerous thing. What if he didn't feel the same? What if he wanted their friendship to remain as it always had? Those thoughts kept Mazie from being as forward as she might have been otherwise. She smiled up at him, liking the way it felt to dance with him like this. She liked the way it felt to play with his hair, though she wasn't quite doing that on purpose. Her eyes lit up when he started talking about the school a bit more. "Do you know any of the secret passageways?" she asked, before continuing with a sweet look, batting her eyelashes at him, "How sweet would I have to be to convince you to show me one?" Assuming he knew where at least one of them was. Mazie hadn't heard about those. The village, sure, but secret passages sounded even more fun than that. Her smile widened as he mentioned cool people. "I'm sure you're right. You know my kind of people." Basically, she generally liked anyone he did. Then again, it wasn't hard for Mazie to get along with people. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie was pretty captivated by the idea of a secret passage way and she asked if Jack knew any of them. He nodded, feeling very proud of himself that he was able to. “Yeah I knew one or two…” one. He knew one. He knew others by rumor but he only knew one for sure, there was only the one, a corridor hidden by a tapestry, that he knew about and used regularly. But he didn’t want to admit that he only knew one. He wanted to sound a little cooler, especially when she asked how sweet she had to be to him to get him to show her. His eyes shined mischievously, “Keep playing with my hair like that and I’ll show you tomorrow.” he smirked, his voice dropping a little in tone. She agreed that he probably knew what kind of people that she would like and he nodded, he had known Mazie for years, she wasn’t hard for most people to get along with. "Plus you've got Jace in your house." Jack told her, of course she would remember Jace. he was Jack's favorite younger adventure buddy. Jack liked having someone like Jace to pass his legacy down to.

It was obvious by the look on Jack’s face that he did know about the passageways. He was proud and smiling at her and Mazie felt a shiver of excitement run through her. He wouldn’t keep this a secret from her. She was almost positive about that. Mazie grinned when he came out, saying that he knew one or two. She pulled herself a little closer to him, thoroughly enjoying their conversation. Her mind raced as she tried to think of things she could do to help convince him to show her. She didn’t think it would be too hard. He teased her, telling her that he’d show her if she kept playing with his hair and she chuckled softly. She hadn’t even realized she was doing that. Mazie smirked as she started playing with his hair even more. She tilted her head as she looked up at him, ”So ... you like me playing with your hair like this?” Mazie’s voice was soft, inviting. She didn’t really expect an answer to her question. Even if he was just kidding about showing her tomorrow, she wouldn’t mind. She was pretty sure he was enjoying himself, which was all she wanted. She nodded when he mentioned Jace, remembering the kid instantly. He was almost like Jack’s shadow, which meant she spent a decent amount of time around him. She wouldn’t mind seeing a lot of him. ”He’s fun,” she answered with a smile. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

She moved herself closer to him and he tightened his arms around her waist, drawing her a little closer too, nearly just pressing her against him. He certainly hadn’t expected to be in this type of situation tonight, but here he was, and he didn’t mind it whatsoever. When he pointed out that he liked she was going with his hair, she started doing it a little more mindfully and he closed his eyes before leaning his head down to rest his forehead against hers. He wasn’t really sure what he was doing, but he was just letting his instincts take over, he wasn’t sure that he had any control over it even if he wanted to, to be honest. “I really do.” he moaned before leaning down a little more and pressing his lips against her, bringing her closer still.

Jack pulled her closer and Mazie couldn’t help but sigh. They weren’t really dancing anymore, but she didn’t mind in the slightest. He was holding her so close and her heart was pounding so hard she was almost certain Jack would feel it. She liked the sensation though. Mazie wanted to be even closer, she wanted something to happen now, because of their closeness. The next thing she knew, his forehead was against hers and Mazie let her eyes flutter closed, breathing lightly to try and keep her composure. He was so close! Part of her wanted to just kiss him right then. The other part was worried about ruining their friendship. His breath brushed her cheeks as he moaned that he did like her fingers in his hair. Then he was kissing her, pulling her closer and Mazie responded. She kissed him back, pressing herself against him as her fingers anchored themselves in his hair. Jack was kissing her. It almost felt surreal, but Mazie knew she wasn’t imagining this. It felt right and wonderful and she suddenly felt whole. She didn’t want it to stop. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Jack hadn’t realized that he was worried that she may not kiss him back until she was returning his kiss with equal amounts of passion and interest as he was giving her. This kiss didn’t seem to be ruining their friendship, which was good at least. He didn’t have a lot of time to think about much else or to get too caught up in his own head because he was too busy enjoying this moment. She pressed against him and held onto the back of his head and he placed his hands on her waist firmly. He certainly wasn’t going to let this go, not quite yet. Without knowing it, he had been waiting six years to kiss her, and now that he finally had, he wanted it to linger.

Mazie felt like she was floating. All her deepest wishes regarding her best friend were coming true as he held her close and kissed her, more passionately than she could have imagined. Her mind wanted to work overtime, trying to determine if Jack actually liked her, but Mazie wouldn’t let it. Not right now. Right now she didn’t want to think of anything. She just wanted to memorize how it felt to be here in his arms, kissing her best friend. She didn’t know how long they stood there, wrapped in one another’s arms as they kissed, but Mazie would have gladly stayed there all night. It would have been worth it to be with Jack for that long. However, eventually a loud bell rang and Mazie jumped, unintentionally breaking apart from Jack. Was that announcing the time or something? She looked up at him with a gentle smile, twirling her fingers in his hair once more. ”Apparently playing with your hair is a dangerous game,” she teased, her voice deeper than usual and noticeably breathless. ”Any idea what that bell was for?” Mazie didn’t want to stop, but she also didn’t want anything to ruin this night. She didn’t want Jack to get into trouble because of her. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

When the bell rang and Mazie jumped, Jack kept his footing but found himself both frustrated and annoyed with the noise. He had no idea where it was coming from or why it had gone off in their area this late at night. He hoped that it wasn’t a teacher or prefect on the lookout for people sneaking out to the room of requirement, but he had no idea unless he stepped out into the hallway. “It could be Peeves.” he guessed. “If it is, we should get out of here. If he knows there are students in here, He’ll probably alert a prefect.” Jack sighed. Peeves was fun when you were on his good side, and while Jack liked the poltergeist, he did get a thrill out of getting students in trouble.

Mazie was frowning a little. She didn’t want to be done kissing Jack, but that stupid bell messed with things. His arms were still wrapped around her and Mazie couldn’t resist the temptation to lean her head on his shoulder, slowly letting her arms fall from around his neck. Then Jack was saying something about Peeves and she pulled back, eyebrows furrowed. ”Peeves? Who is that?” She sighed and unwillingly stepped away from him. ”I guess we should probably go then.” Mazie wrinkled her nose, annoyed at the entire circumstance. She wasn’t done with Jack yet, but apparently that wasn’t her choice to make. ”I ... think I can find the way back to my common room if you want to head straight to yours so you don’t get caught ...” At least, she tried to pay attention to the directions when he brought her here. She could probably find her way back, eventually. While Mazie didn’t want to leave Jack, she also didn’t want to be a burden to him. Still, she found herself hoping that he’d walk her back. She bit her lip a little nervously. Why was she nervous about Jack? JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

“Peeves is the school poltergeist.” Jack explained to her, lowering his voice a bit, even though he was mostly sure sound didn’t carry outside of the room of requirement. “He’s pretty cool, most of the time, but he likes to get students in trouble and cause mischief as much as he can.” Jack sighed. If it was Peeves, he’d be sure to get him back for it later. Mazie suggested that she could get herself back to her common room and Jack shook his head. “I’m not going to abandon you.” he said, going back on his threat from earlier in the night when he had said he would abandon her if she didn’t stop sassing him. “I’ll make sure you get back safely.” he promised. He asked the room for a side door and snuck out, pulling her by her hand down the hall away from the yelling ghost outside. He lead her back up to where he met her, somewhat close to her common room, he thought. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” he promised before letting her go and running off again towards his own common room, disappearing into the darkness.

Jack was whispering now, explaining about the school poltergeist, who liked to get into trouble but was still "cool". Mazie couldn't help but smirk. Of course he would think the school poltergeist was cool. That was Jack for sure. Then again, if he liked Peeves, Mazie was pretty sure she would too. She nodded slowly, "Yeah ... probably a good idea if we try to avoid him then." Since she didn't want them to get into trouble tonight. Her smile grew when Jack insisted that he wasn't going to abandon her. Okay, she definitely wasn't going to fight against that. She wasn't quite ready to leave him, though she doubted the two would resume their kissing in the hallway. It was still a shame they'd stopped in the first place. "My hero," she teased, looking up at him with wide eyes and a huge smirk on her face. She chuckled when a new door appeared and Jack pulled her through it, leading her down other hallways. He paused when they got close to where they'd met, releasing her and saying he'd see her tomorrow. "See you," Mazie answered, watching him run off before she turned back to her own common room. She entered and went straight to a couch, closing her eyes as she thought about her best friend and their best expedition to date. Tonight, of course. --- the end --- JOHN ELLIOT CLARK
