Mazie admitted that she had always appreciated him and it wasn’t going to stop now. He gave a soft laugh and rolled his eyes. “You’re not starting to get soft on me, are ya?” he asked. Of course he knew that she felt that way, just as he was pretty sure that she knew that she was his best friend. But it wasn’t something they usually said out loud, they were usually too cool for things like that. Or at least Jack liked to think they were, or that he was. But it was still nice to hear and it had slapped a smile on his face. She put one hand on his shoulder and without thinking about it, he released her other hand and put both of his hands on her waist since the song was currently a slower one. He hadn’t given how they would dance any thought at all really, this just seemed like the way to do it. Jack was completely oblivious to the miles of thoughts going through her head. She asked about the party and he nodded. He knew Riley well. “Yeah, I think everyone in school got it.” well, almost everyone, if he had to guess. “You going?” he asked her.

Jack laughed, rolling his eyes at her and Mazie scrunched her nose at him, rolling her eyes at his question. "Of course I'm not," she defended herself, her tone lofty. "I only said that because you seem to need reassurance or something." Or maybe she needed the reassurance that even though he was interested in some brunette beauty, they'd still be friends. Ugh, what was happening to her? This wasn't the first time Jack was interested in some girl. Even if he ended up dating her, it wouldn't be the first time he dated someone either, and he'd always made a point to still do things with Mazie even when he was dating someone else. She was just being insecure. Then he was letting go of her hand and holding her waist while he started to dance with her and Mazie's heart almost stopped. She lifted her free hand to rest up on his shoulder too, a delighted smile on her face. He didn't mind dancing with her like this in public, with other people around. Granted, she still had her mask on so no one would know who he was dancing with, but Jack's mask was gone. If his brunette saw him, she'd know. Then again, it wasn't like he was going to kiss her again. It was just a dance. Mazie tried to control the adrenaline rushing through her at his touch. She nodded back to him, pulling herself a little closer as she moved her arms to wrap around his neck instead of just resting them on his shoulders. She was careful not to touch his hair, though she really wanted to play with it again. "What, you think I'm going to miss the chance to party?" Mazie teased. "Of course I'll be there!" Maybe they could dance again, if there was dancing. "I'm assuming you're going too, right?"JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

As they danced she came a little closer and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. He would be lying if he said that he hadn’t noticed now that she was acting a little differently. They had danced together before, at Ilvermorny dances, and at parties and such back at their own school, but he couldn’t remember a time, besides her first night at Hogwarts, where they had danced this closely and intimately. Maybe she really did just miss him and was glad to be close to him again. He was certainly happy to have her close… close as in at Hogwarts, right? He certainly wasn’t disappointed in being able to hold her this close… ooh this was weird. “Yeah well I know the groom well, so I’ll be there. He’s my roommate.” Jack explained. Plus he was sure there would be some sort of drama. Someone would make the bride mad or make some comment about something that would set someone off, surely. “You wannah go with me?” he asked. But then he cleared his throat. “You’re not really supposed to go to these things alone, i think.” he wasn’t sure where any of this was coming from but it was out there now.

Mazie loved how it felt to be dancing like this with Jack, his hands at her waist as they turned slowly and talked with one another. She knew it shouldn't be important to her, that it likely didn't really mean anything to him. He had some other girl that he was interested in, after all, but she didn't care. Right now, he was dancing with her, holding her and smiling at her and Mazie was determined to enjoy her time with him. She also was determined not to overthink it. So she focused on what he was saying. That should be enough to distract her from her feelings. Her eyebrows rose a little when he said he knew the groom. "Oh, I didn't know that you knew him. I ... don't think I know him or the bride. Do you know her too?" She wouldn't be surprised if he did. Jack was good with people. He seemed to get along with them very easily. Her eyes widened when he asked if Mazie wanted to go with him. Yes! A million times yes! But before she could get the word out, he was coughing and explaining that he didn't think he was supposed to go on his own. At his words, she deflated, but she tried not to let it show. She smiled up at him, "Yeah, I can go with you," Mazie answered with a nod, though her happiness from a moment before was gone. Why didn't he just ask that girl from earlier? Maybe he did and she already had plans. Maybe Mazie was Jack's fallback. She blinked, trying not to think about it. "Do you just want to meet there ... or before you head over?" she asked to distract herself. There was no point in letting herself get emotional here. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

She said that she didn’t know that he knew the groom and then asked if he knew the bride. “Um, I know of her, I guess. She’s in my house too, but she’s in your year, I think, so I don’t really know her.” he knew what he heard about her. He knew that she wasn’t the nicest person and that she tended towards the dramatics. He also knew that Riley didn’t love her, he had heard enough from his roommate to know that he was still in love with his ex, but for whatever reason he was doing this now. Jack didn’t understand it. But he wasn’t going to get involved. She seemed to buy his cover excuse when he asked her out without even meaning to. Good. That was a close one. “We can just walk over together, yeah?” he offered.

Mazie frowned, nodding a little as she tried to think. If the girl was in Mazie's year, maybe she met her ... but she couldn't remember the name from the invitation. Did it start with a "P"? Or maybe an "R" ... she couldn't be sure. "What's her name again?" Mazie asked, figuring Jack would remember. He always seemed good at stuff like that to her. Now Mazie was curious about if she'd met the girl before. She was pretty good at remembering the names of people she'd met. Mazie watched Jack, waiting for his answer of how they could go over and she nodded when he gave it. "Yeah, that works good I think," she answered, wishing she could get rid of that sick disappointed feeling in her stomach. At least Jack wanted to spend time with her. So what if she was probably his second choice, or even his last? She shouldn't waste her time with him being sad. "I .... didn't really look at the invitation that good," she confessed, her lips twitching into a small smile. "Is it formal dress or just nice? Also, is it going to take all day or can we still look around the village before or after?" Okay, now she was making jokes, trying to lift her mood. Typical Mazie. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

She asked what the brides name was and Jack had to think. “Uh, Priscilla something?” he was pretty sure that he knew her last name, or he thought he did, it started with an R, he thought. He didn’t really have any reason to know her. He had never spoke with her and he couldn’t see himself ever speaking with her. Mazie said that she thought them going over together would work and Jack nodded though he couldn’t help but beat himself up a bit over the fact that he couldn’t just man up and actually have asked her out. He had said the words, why did he have to say more words? He knew exactly why. He loved her too much. She was his best friend and he wasn’t willing to risk that on his stupid, teenage boy feelings. “I think it said formal dress.” he nodded. He’d likely just wear this same suit. He wasn’t really a suit guy so he only had the one.

Mazie nodded when Jack answered her question, telling her the girl's name. Yeah, Priscilla sounded about right ... and Mazie didn't know the girl at all. Surprise, surprise. There were lots of people at Hogwarts that she didn't know, and while Mazie was working on that, she knew she wouldn't be able to meet everyone. Someone engaged seemed like the kind of person she wouldn't really want to know anyway. However, the whole Jack asking her to the engagement party was still a little awkward and she didn't know why. Why did she feel so awkward about going with him? It wasn't like he hadn't accompanied her to a party before. They'd always been friends and if they didn't have a date to things like this, they'd go together. That's probably what this was, but Mazie wanted it to mean more. He answered her next question and Mazie nodded. She was thinking too much. She didn't want this dance with Jack to be something boring and depressing. So she smirked, "Formal, huh? So should I wear this or try something else out, do you think?" As a girl, she definitely had more of a choice. She wasn't really wanting Jack's opinion, though it'd be funny if he gave it. Mostly, she was teasing him and trying to see if she could make him squirm a little. She wanted to lighten the mood. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie asked if she should wear what she was currently wearing or something else and Jack shrugged. He didn’t really know anything about women's dresses or fashion, so he didn’t really know what to say about it. “I don’t know. I’m just going to wear this.” he admitted. He wished that he could offer her more advice, but this wasn’t his area of expertise. “You could probably just wear that. But, I think some of the people in attendance might remember that you wore it tonight.” he knew that type of people, mostly from his roommate telling him about his life. “I wouldn’t care though.”

Mazie grinned when Jack said he didn't know, admitting that he was going to wear what he was wearing now. "Oooh good to know. I'll have to see if I can match it," she answered, pretending to be serious. It was easy to match a suit, all she really had to do was dress nicely. Besides that, she had plenty of dresses. While they weren't Mazie's preferred form of dress, she expected there to be parties and she'd brought clothes to wear to them. He said he wouldn't care if she wore the same thing and Mazie smiled up at him. "You're so sweet," she told him, reaching up to touch his cheek teasingly. Then she realized what she was doing and lowered her hand back to his shoulder, hoping the dim light in the party would hide her slight blush. Mazie shrugged, trying to pretend like she hadn't just given herself away, while praying that he didn't notice. "I'll wear something else. See if maybe I can impress my charming cowboy some more," she teased, playing with his collar a little bit. Ugh, why did she like him so much now? Now that he was entirely unavailable. It just wasn't fair. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

This dance seemed to be going on forever, but he didn’t mind one bit. This song, or series of slow songs, if there had been more than one by now, could keep going on forever and he wouldn’t even realize that time had passed. He really wasn’t sure what was taking over him and it was kind of annoying. Jack was a cowboy. Cowboys were stoic and manly, he couldn’t be this emotional and confused about the way he felt about his best friend. But, what if Mazie had changed and she wanted to date someone now? And what if she wanted to date him? He was about to tell himself how crazy that thought was when she reached up and touched his cheek. His breath caught in his chest. But then she quickly put her hand back down and he blinked slowly, this chest rising with breath again. This was just how it happened last time they danced together. And then they had kissed. Awe man what was he doing? “You don’t have to do anymore more to impress me than be yourself.” he said, his voice a little lower than usual.

What was she doing? Mazie felt so self-conscious of every move she made with Jack. Man, she was so torn. Her plan when she got here was to flirt with Jack and tell him all about how she felt. This would be the perfect time to do that, but she couldn't. Jack liked that other girl. She'd seen them together, seen the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes. Jack didn't want her and Mazie was still acting like a love-struck girl. Or, in other words, she was acting like an idiot. Her mouth fell open a tiny bit when Jack told her that all she needed to do to impress him was be herself. Ugh, why did he have to be interested in a different girl right now? She smiled up at him, "That I can definitely do," she promised. The music changed then, but Mazie didn't even notice. She was too busy looking up at Jack until she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. "Hey, the next song is a special kind of line dance. You guys want to join in?" She was a young girl and Mazie was instantly annoyed at her, wanting to glare so she'd go away, but Mazie didn't. She sighed and removed her arms from around Jack's neck. "Thanks for the dance Jack. I loved it," she told him honestly. Any other time she would have kissed him on the cheek, but she'd already made things awkward enough between them. She glanced around the room, not wanting to leave his side. "Maybe we should move out of the way?" Mazie suggested, trying to grab his hand and lead him out of the center of the room with a teasing smile. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

She had to know what she was doing, didn’t she? Playing with the collar on his suit jacket like that, it was just like what she was doing with his hair the night that he had showed her the room of requirement. And that had resulted in a kiss. What was she trying to get to now? She knew what playing with his hair did to him, and while she wasn’t playing with it now, she was getting dangerously close.
But then the music changed and a younger girl interrupted them, saying this was a line dance and basically kicking them off the dance floor unless they were going to line dance. In any other situation, Jack would have joined in, but not in a suit. Not at a party like this. “Yeah let’s get off the floor.” he admitted. The effects of the alcohol ladened punch completely gone from him by now. That dance had sobered him up better than any potion could have. He let her grab his hand and lead the way off. He wasn't sure where she was leading, but he didn't care.

Once the younger girl interrupted them, the tension between Mazie and Jack broke. It was a good thing, but at the same time it didn't feel like a good thing. Ugh, she was not being smart right now. She needed time to sort through everything she saw and heard tonight. But ... it wasn't like Jack was pushing her away or anything. If he liked that other girl, why would he have danced so close to Mazie? Or maybe he just didn't notice things like that with Mazie. Maybe she wasn't any kind of temptation to him. She smiled over at him when he agreed that they should get off the dance floor, following her easily. Mazie led him to the side of the room. She didn't really have any place in mind or anything, she just wanted to get out of the way. And ... she wanted Jack to go with her. She didn't want to leave him behind so some other girl could snatch him up. Once they reached the edge, she released his hand and turned so her back was to the wall. "So ... you have any other girls you want to dance with tonight?" she asked nosily. Apparently Mazie wanted to torment herself, finding out who else Jack wanted to spend his time with. Once they reached the edge of the party and were safely off the dance floor, she let go of him and then asked if he had any other girls that he wanted to dance with tonight. He raised his eyebrows, wondering where a comment like that was coming from. It wasn’t like he had come here tonight with the idea to dance with specific people, Ana had just been a lucky find, and he was sure that he would spend some time with Mazie, but he hadn’t thought they would dance like that, especially not after the last time they did. “No I don’t.” he shook his head. He wondered if she had someone else she wanted to go dance with. “I’m going to get us something to drink,” he decided before heading over to the refreshment table. He brought them back drinks and then they continued talking for the rest of the dance.
