Eventually Mazie decided she was ready and the two of the started on their way to the castle. The clouds above them were starting to turn dark and rain seemed likely. Maybe it would help to melt the snow. The weather was slowly warming up and the rain usually wasn’t freezing anymore, which was starting to create slush on the ground in place of snow. Which jack thought was worse than the snow. As they walked, she asked how flying class was and Jack shrugged. “Fine. We’re just working on loops.” The class was mostly for special skills, and the 7th years were mostly working on truck skills. As they walked, a little brunette girl who Jack knew from his own house walked by and waved at him. Jack smiles and offered the girl a friendly wave and a smile in return. “Well hey there.” If he had a hat, he would have tipped it at her.

Walking with Jack was normally something Mazie liked very much. She liked to be with him, talking and joking around. The atmosphere today seemed a little more serious than usual, which was likely her fault. Hopefully Jack didn’t notice it. He answered her question, saying they were working on loops and Mazie finally felt more relaxed. Her eyes widened with excitement and she turned her body to face Jack, a more than obvious grin on her face. ”Just loops?” She teased, ”Please tell me you represented Ilvermorny well,” her tone was pleading, but she was definitely teasing. She’d played Quadpot with Jack. She knew he was a good flier, even though they didn’t play the sport here. Mazie was chuckling, pleased at how lighthearted this conversation would be. When she heard Jack greeting someone, she turned to look instinctively. At the sight of the brunette with pretty hair, Mazie’s expression fell. At least she wasn’t facing Jack anymore so he couldn’t see it. Why did this girl have to be everywhere? Why couldn’t she let Mazie enjoy one walk with her best friend? The girl giggled at Jack’s greeting, blushing and waving again before hurrying off. She felt stiff and annoyed, wished that she could relax again, but she couldn’t. This was crap. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Jack laughed when Mazie gave him a hard time about how well he represented Ilvermorny. “Yeah I showed the Hogwarts guys a thing or two.” Jack smirked. He wasn’t sure he was really better than anyone else. Almost everyone in that class was there because they were good and wanted to keep learning and loved flying. They were all very fair flyers.
Jack turned back after being friendly to the girl and couldn’t help but see Mazies face. She didn’t seem very happy that he had said hello to her. Jack felt a little smirk take over his face and he gave a little chuckle. “If I didn’t know any better I’d say you were jealous I’ve made other friends.” He teased.

Mazie beamed when Jack told her that he showed the other people a thing or two. Suuuuuure he did. Still, she loved hearing him laugh and seeing his smile. It made her heart pound in a new rhythm, but she shouldn’t let it. She already knew Jack didn’t feel about her that way. Still she nodded definitively. ”Good. I expect nothing less from my favorite flier.” Mazie offered a friendly wink. Mazie still wasn’t looking at Jack when she heard him chuckling. Of course he thought this was funny. She tried to force a smile on her face, but Mazie wasn’t sure how real it felt. Or how real it looked. She rolled her eyes when Jack teased her. ”Of course not. You’ve always had tons of friends, just like me. Why would that be any different here? Except for the fact that you obviously got here months before me.” Her lips stretched into a thin smile, but Mazie’s voice was harder than she meant it to be. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Was Mazie concerned that she wasn’t making friends? What happened to her other friends from Ilvermorny? Jack knew she had a ton of friends, they were both social people, that’s why they got along so well. But he started to feel a little worried for her now. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “Don’t worry. No matter how many friends I have, you’ll always be my best girl.” He promised. And he meant it. Mazie was his best friend. No one knew him better than she did.

Of course Jack noticed that something was wrong. Mazie hoped beyond hope that he wouldn’t realize how she felt for him. That was the last thing she wanted him to know. Especially right now. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and Mazie looked up at him in surprise. At his words a soft smile crept onto her face. ”Thanks Jack,” her voice was quiet and sincere. She cuddled into him a little, giving him a one-armed hug. ”And you’re my best guy,” she added, squeezing him tight for a second. Ugh, why did she like him so much? ”So is there-“ she cut off, realizing what she was about to ask him. If there was a girl he liked. She asked before, at Ilvermorny ... but Mazie wasn’t sure she wanted to know now that she liked him. She coughed, ”Is there anything interesting that’s happened to you this week?” Good save. Maybe. Mazie cuddled up to him a little bit and he squeezed her shoulder. He didn’t want her thinking that he had replaced her or would ever be able to. Since the two of them had met he was drawn to Mazie. Even when they were kids she drew him to her. He had been wrapped around her finger since the first time she spoke to him. She admitted he was her best guy too and he smirked. Good. He should be. She then started to ask about something but paused a bit before she finished her sentence. It wasn’t like Mazie. “No.” He said with a shake of his head. “It’s been a week like any other. What about you? Are you asking me because there was something exciting that happened to you?” He asked.

It felt so nice to be close to Jack like this, even though it couldn't mean what Mazie wanted it to. She just had to enjoy moments like this with him while she could. He squeezed her shoulder and she smiled a little, feeling a bit of comfort with his touch. Not enough to take away the inner pain of him liking someone else though. She just hoped that he and that other girl wouldn't last long, once they got together. Wait, that was mean. She shouldn't wish something like that for her best friend. She couldn't. He answered her question, saying it was a normal week and Mazie grimaced at the ground. Of course it was a normal week. She shrugged when he asked about her. "No, it's been normal for me too. Wish I had some thrilling adventure to tell you about, but I've been stuck studying a fair bit," Mazie's nose scrunched with disgust. She hated studying. "Nothing out of the ordinary," she reaffirmed, looking up at him with a flirty smile. "... except I haven't seen much of you." She wished, once again, that they were the same year, or even the same house. She wished she could see even more of her best friend, but wishing wouldn't make that a reality. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie admitted that nothing out of the ordinary had happened to her this week either and Jack wondered why she asked, but he decided not to press her about it. There was obviously something on her mind, but she was trying to get over it or pretend like it wasn’t, which probably meant that she didn’t want to talk about it since she normally would tell him if she needed to talk about something. “Yeah I know.” he sighed when she said that she hadn’t seen much of him this week. It was hard since they weren’t in any classes together and weren’t in the same house. “But I can be all yours for the rest of the night.” he decided. They finished their way to the great hall just in time for dinner to appear on the table.
