[nospaces][googleFont=Archivo+Black] [attr="class","eclair"] [attr="class","eclair-header"] [attr="class","eclair-lyrics"]"There Are No Mistakes, Only Happy Accidents." [attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] There were three key times when Alice was happiest. These were as follows: when she was at her job, when she was around the people she loved, and when she was around animals. Alice felt she could have once had a career with animals, magical or ordinary. She adored them after all, and Care of Magical Creatures was one of her favorite subjects in school. Nothing made her giddy like seeing a bunny rabbit or a Pygmy Puff and being able to pick it up and pet it. [break][break] It was her day off from work, and she knew she had to go to the Flower Festival while there was time. She was always a big fan of flowers, but the Petting Zoo was the big draw for her. It was her chance to interact and place with numerous creatures, and get into that happy place that only adorable creatures could put her in. She grinned like a little girl when she walked in. She spotted a baby Kneazle right away, and cautiously approached it to make sure it liked her. There must have been something about her that gave off a happy vibe because it let her pick it up and pet it. [break][break] "Oh you are the absolute cutest," she said. "I wish I could take you home, but I don't know how Bilbo would react." She found a seat and sat with the creature, speaking to it and stroking its fur. As she did so, she began to get lost in thought over a few things. One of them was her father and recent happenings. She needed to go visit him and her mother that day.

The Flower Festival had started off well for Sami, although she hadn't been there for very long. She wasn't the biggest fan of the fact that all of the Hogwarts students in attendance at the festival had to arrive and leave together via Portkey, but she understood that it was only for safety reasons—and probably to ensure that none of their parents got upset with the school for allowing any of them to wander, she guessed. Either way, the Gryffindor was glad to have her choice of activities once she was inside the greenhouse, and one of the first things that she happened to notice was a petting zoo.
As someone without any pets, getting to spend time around creatures that she didn't have to be responsible for caring for was a plus in her book. Besides, from what she could tell, the creatures that were there were some of the cuter ones; there was nothing too weird or too dangerous. (Again, that was probably for the better…) Although she considered going over to some of the non-magical creatures there, there were also Kneazles there to pet.
After getting instructions from one of the Magizoologists working the petting zoo, Sami stepped inside of the Kneazle enclosure that was set up. The cat-like creatures weren't exactly the most receptive, but Sami noticed that someone else had managed to get one of the baby Kneazles on their lap. Looking again, Sami smiled. It was Alice Longbottom, who, as she recalled, had been working with her father for a while at the Ministry.
She walked over to the older girl, amazed. "It's so cute! How'd you get it to cooperate?" she laughed.

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] Alice was so deep in her thoughts, she didn't pick up on what the other girl said right away. In fact, it wasn't until she looked over and saw the girl that she took it in. She had a bad habit of doing that those days. The only time she seemed to focus was at work, where she had to. Even when visiting family, she seemed distracted by her thoughts. [break][break] "Hmmm... oh...oh yes," she said. "I'm... well I'm not quite sure. I just gave it a try and it just... well I think it's a she." Alice checked. "Yep... it's a she." Alice then blushed at doing that little check in front of someone, and then cleared her throat. "But yes, she's taken to me. I'd love to adopt her, but Bilbo wouldn't hear of it. Bilbo's my cat." Wait, was that TMI? No, she was talking about her cat. How was that TMI... was it? [break][break] Alice then realized she knew the girl, but had to think from where. She then remembered the family photo on Ali's desk at work, and then one of the few other times she had actually seen the girl in person. Of course! She smiled at the girl upon remembering. [break][break] "You're Ali's daughter, aren't you?" she said. "Um... hold on... Samira. I don't know if you remember me. Alice... Longbottom. I work with your dad."

Alice seemed distracted by the little Kneazle at first, not that Sami could fault her for that. She answered her after a moment, though, saying that she wasn't quite sure how she had managed to do it, and she even checked to make sure that she was calling the Kneazle by the proper pronouns. Sami giggled at that, mostly because she hadn't really thought to extend that courtesy to a pet, although she was bisexual—albeit closeted to her family—and generally thought of herself as being good about checking with other people about that kind of thing.
"But yes, she's taken to me. I'd love to adopt her, but Bilbo wouldn't hear of it. Bilbo's my cat."
Bilbo? Sami blinked but didn't openly question it. What kind of a name was "Bilbo"?
Regardless, Alice didn't stay on the subject of her cat for long, and her next question surprised Sami. "You're Ali's daughter, aren't you?" she asked.
Sami nodded her head. She was Ali's daughter, and it was probably easier to tell that she was related to him than to her very white mother.
"Um… hold on… Samira. I don't know if you remember me. Alice…" Longbottom. I work with your dad."
"Yeah," Sami nodded again. She remembered the older girl, even though she had been a few years ahead of her in school. Up until Professor Longbottom had fallen ill, she had been the headmaster's daughter, after all. As for herself, she hadn't really heard much about what her father had been doing at work. It wasn't as though she was particularly good about remembering to write to her parents, although she had been home at Christmastime when everything had happened with Hogsmeade and the dragons and Azkaban, seemingly all at once. "No, don't worry. I remember you," she assured Alice, leaving it at that. If it didn't sound so awkward to her, she probably would have asked her how her work was going, but that felt strange.

It was rare to see students at that time of year, but the festival was something special after all. The fact that she was petting a random Kneazle said that. That Kneazle was now pretty content in her lap. Alice continued to idly stroke the creature's fur as she addressed Samira. [break][break] "Well, it's lovely to see you again, Samira," she said. "Everything well considering?" Considering... a lot. So many had gone on in the past while, and some had directly affected Alice. There was the disappearance of a family friend in Harry Potter. There was her own father's ailment. Then there was all that went on at Hogwarts. So... yes, she wondered if, somewhere in all of that, things were going well. Alice blushed heavily. "What I mean to say is I hope you are well. I didn't mean... well you know..." She sighed and blushed yet again. "Lovely festival, eh?" "Well, it's lovely to see you again, Samira," Alice told her with a smile. The little Kneazle on the older girl's lap appeared to be perfectly happy to relax there, and it looked as though it was beginning to fall asleep as she pet it. "Everything well considering?"
There was no doubt that a lot had happened back in late December, and that wasn't counting all of the months and years of Merlin knew what had happened before that. The dragons in Hogsmeade and the destruction of Azkaban were just the latest two. It had been a few months since then, and things had been almost eerily quiet. She hadn't heard much about the state of Azkaban, other than what everyone else already knew: The Ministry, MACUSA, and whoever else was assisting them were working on it. It was probably because they didn't want anyone who had escaped Azkaban to know what they were doing, she supposed.
As far as things went for her dad and her family specifically, however, she hadn't heard any bad news, which was, in itself, good news.
Alice seemed to have become slightly flustered, though. "What I mean to say is I hope you are well," she clarified. "I didn't mean… well you know… Lovely festival, eh?"
"Yeah, it's nice." It was somewhere to be other than Hogwarts or Hogsmeade, and there was more to see and do than on the average trip to Hogsmeade—at least in Sami's opinion. "And I know what you mean," she added, regarding what Alice had asked—and then revised—about how things were going. It had been a strange few years, and Samira tried her best to put all of the bad parts at the furthest reaches of her memory. She doubted that she was the only one who had employed that tactic.
"All things considered," Sami assured Alice, "it's not too bad, you know." She shrugged. "And the festival's fundraising for Hogsmeade, so that helps, doesn't it?"

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] Alice was relieved that she hadn't run Samira off yet with her special Longbottom brand of awkwardness. Well, not all Longbottoms had that, but Alice had it in droves. The student seemed to get where Alice was coming from, which was a feat in itself with the former Hufflepuff at times. Half the time Alice didn't know where Alice was coming from. She then smiled as Samira spoke of the charity the festival was putting on. [break][break] "Yes, and it's doing a wonderful job," she said. "It's always wonderful how people in our community really band together in times of tragedy. I hear Muggles do that as well. Sometimes I wonder just how alike we and they are... for all our differences I mean." Alice had written a paper on the similarities and differences between Muggles and Wizards/Witches for Muggle Studies back in school. It was amazing what all she found out. She especially loved how some of their holidays lined up, especially Halloween. [break[break] Alice regretfully had to put the Kneazle down, but she was getting thirsty. She always seemed to when talking to people she barely knew or didn't know at all. Still, as she rose, she found she wanted to talk to her co-worker's daughter a bit more. [break][break] "I'm going to buy a bottle of Pumpkin Juice," she said. "May I treat you... if you'd like to walk with me I mean." "Yes, and it's doing a wonderful job," Alice said of the festival's fundraising efforts. "It's always wonderful how people in our community really band together in times of tragedy. I hear Muggles do that as well."
Sami nodded her head as Alice spoke, with the older girl musing about their similarities and differences. When she wasn't at Hogwarts and confined to the places where the school had given her permission to go, Sami spent enough time in the Muggle world to know that Alice was correct. "They're not very different from us, really," Sami shrugged as she watched Alice set the Kneazle down again.
Rather than leave entirely, though, Alice mentioned that she was going to get some pumpkin juice and asked if she wanted to join her—her treat.
"Sure. Thanks," Sami nodded, careful to step around the Kneazles as she walked to the exit point of the enclosure.

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] She guessed Samira was right. Muggles had their own "magic" after all, that which was called technology. In a way, the creators of this technology were wizards. Plus, she guessed that probably talked the same as magical folk, walked the same, and so on. Perhaps one day, she would interact with some of them a bit more than fixing the the magic that accidentally happened in their presence. [break][break] "Once when I had to dis-enchant a Muggle motorcar that was brought to life by a prankster, I saw that they had an ice cream parlor with all the same flavors that we have... well almost all," she said. "They didn't have Butterbeer Ripple. They did have Butterscotch Ripple, which is quite tasty... in small doses. Not that big of an ice cream eater." She then blushed a tad as she felt she was rambling too much. [break][break] Alice then nodded about the Pumpkin Juice. She stepped over to cart selling them ice cold and asked for the two. She paid for them and gave one to Samira. She gave a light toast. [break][break] "To flowers and kneazles... I suppose," she said with a nervous chuckle before sipping her drink. Her eyes then widened as it was way too cold. "Cold on teeth! Cold on teeth!" She then licked her teeth in an attempt to warm them.

Alice explained that, once, she had had to disenchant a Muggle car and had seen an ice cream parlor with all of the same flavors that they had in the magical world—or almost all of them. Sami's eyes widened, knowing that was a true feat; Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour was always coming up with new and exciting flavors. The Muggle place hadn't had Florean Fortescue's signature butterbeer flavor, Alice added, although they had a "butterscotch ripple" flavor that Alice said was tasty although she wasn't much of an ice cream eater.
Sami nodded. It sounded good, as did the pumpkin juice that Alice suggested. They walked out of the petting zoo and over to a cart selling bottles of ice-cold pumpkin juice. Alice purchased their two bottles, handed one to her, and then toasted to them.
"To flowers and Kneazles… I suppose," Alice announced. She took a sip of pumpkin juice at about the same time as Samira had her bottle up to her own lips, although the older girl began to panic. "Cold on teeth! Cold on teeth!" she exclaimed.
Sami pulled her bottle of pumpkin juice away from her mouth before she could be subjected to the same fate. "F**k," she laughed. "It's that cold?"

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] Alice made a few more "it's cold noises" before she realized that the younger woman had swore. It was a particularly bad word as well. She had heard that even Muggles thought the word was a bit rough. She decided not to say anything though. She wasn't exactly the correcting parent type. She let the chill go out of her mouth and took a smaller sip. It wasn't as bad that time. [break][break] "Okay," she said. "A bit better now." Now that the two were relaxing and drinking their juice, Alice decided to make casual conversation. She was usually horrid at that, but she was comfortable around Samira by then. [break][break] "So, what's the plan after graduation?" she asked. "Ministry job perhaps? I mean... if not... nothing wrong there. Just, with your father being there and all... well I guess that doesn't matter... I mean it does matter... his... our jobs matter... you know what I mean." She blushed as she took another sip of her drink. Gradually, Alice's brain freeze seemed to wear off, at least enough that she could take another sip of her pumpkin juice without issue. "Okay," she spoke. "A bit better now."
Sami nodded and took a sip of her own pumpkin juice. It was really cold, but it wasn't painfully cold.
"So, what's the plan after graduation?" Alice asked her then. Sami knew that she should have known; she should have had some sort of a plan in the works, and she probably should have had a back-up plan for that non-existent plan of hers. But she was still trying to figure out a Plan A in the first place. "Ministry job perhaps?"
Sami knew that a Ministry position was logical. She certainly wasn't going to come away from her NEWTs with the marks needed to become an Auror, but she knew that already. Besides, she had never really pictured herself doing anything like that.
"I mean… if not… nothing wrong there. Just, with your father being there and all… well I guess that doesn't matter… I mean it does matter… his… our jobs matter… you know what I mean."
"Yeah," Sami understood. She wasn't trying to devalue what her father or Alice did for a living, but she wasn't really interested in working for the Ministry anymore. "I don't know yet."
That her parents didn't know that she had actually dated Nefe was part of the issue, too. She really didn't want to have to work with her ex-girlfriend if she could avoid it. Sure, all of the students who had been in her year the previous year, as well as the students who had been in the year above hers—Nefe's year—probably knew about their relationship. From that perspective, it was only a matter of time before her family actually found out that she was bisexual. As with her career plans, though, she was still procrastinating on telling them about her sexuality and that she and Nefertiti Bulstrode had been anything more than friends.
Alice had been out of school for long enough that she probably didn't care too much about the Hogwarts gossip, Sami guessed. It probably got boring doing Ministry work, though. And working with her dad? Sami wasn't so sure about that, though it was probably different working with somebody else's parent without being their child.
"I mean, I'm sure my mum and dad would like it if I had something planned," Sami noted with an eye roll, "but I've got months." Although she was doubtful that her NEWT results would be better than expected and shock everyone who knew her, she wasn't counting on it. She just needed a job that could pay for her living expenses.

"I wanted to work with animals at one time," Alice explained to her when she mentioned that she didn't know what she wanted to do post-Hogwarts. "I loved Care of Magical Creatures. However, when I tried to assist at the Magical Menagerie, it was a disaster." Sami nodded, though she found that hard to believe with how skilled Alice had seemed to be at handling the Kneazle in the petting zoo. "However, throughout much of school, I was very good at fixing spells that had gone wrong. My professors kept telling me to join the Reversal Squad one day, and I finally gave in." Well, that beat having her flask of firewhisky confiscated by the one professor whose subject she actually enjoyed. "It's a chaotic job some days, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I often feel like I'm part of something special, being in the Ministry."
Her father had always echoed the same sort of sentiment, having come to Britain from Somalia with his mother and sister as a child. There was a certain pride in having a Ministry job, something that her grandmother and father had both repeated to her at various points. Sami just didn't think that she was especially suited to any of that.
"I'm sure you'll find your place. What are you skilled at?"
For one, she didn't really like the thought of a desk job, and she wasn't focused enough for something like what her father and Alice did every day. "I don't mind Charms," she noted, "but that's it, really." She had managed to get high enough OWL marks to continue with that and very little else in comparison to many of her peers. "And Muggle Studies isn't the worst." Funnily enough, both the Charms professor—Professor Choi—and the Muggle Studies professor—Professor Fawley—had only begun teaching at Hogwarts from September.
"I just think it's… sort of pointless, really, that adults expect us to know everything about who we are and what we want to do for the rest of our lives," Sami sighed. "Why can't I just—I don't know—backpack through Borneo?"

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] Alice frowned a bit about adults expected a bunch of stuff from Sam. She was still contending with the fact that she was an adult. She hadn't been that sweet little Hufflepuff student that long before. Just a few years. Did Sam see her like that because Alice was asking her about her future? Suddenly, Alice was blushing a bit. She definitely didn't mean to offend the girl. [break][break] "Well, I certainly don't think someone should stop you from doing anything you want to do," she said. "I mean, if you like backpacking through places, there's a lot of opportunities to make a living from that. But definitely do what you want to. I know what I enjoy isn't what everyone does. As I said, you'll find your place in the world, but make sure it's the place YOU want to be." She then let out a long sigh. "Sorry, I must be rubbish in giving advice."
