▲ A few days had passed since the Weekly party had occurred. That had been Maddie’s first appearance in London since her accident the over winter break six months earlier. It had been…okay. But the lack of confidence she had when it came to returning to society had been bolstered by the party. She was pretty sure nobody that actually remembered her cared where she had been. Most had figured she’d went back to Beauxbatons, which was a reasonable enough assumption. She would have preferred going back there, but her old classmates knew too much about her family’s financial ruin. The Hogwarts and Ilvermorny students didn’t care about that sort of thing. Probably because they were all poor to begin with. She was only now starting to realize that was why they brushed her off as neurotic and annoying. Now they were all in the same boat, sort of. She still had a few possessions that were worth more than some of her newer classmates would ever earn in their lifetime. Flaunting those around every now and then would still keep her at the top of the food chain at the British school. That would never change as long as she was still alive. With her concerns over her appearance virtually gone, Maddie decided to get a head start on some of her school shopping for the following fall. She didn’t have the silly list that Hogwarts sent out in the fall, but she had a pretty decent idea of what she would need. The first stop was robes. Her old ones had been sold off with loads of her designer lines on accident, and now that same money was being turned around to get new ones again. There was little to no uniqueness when it came to the robes but at least she would have plush, new ones. Approaching the door, Maddie tugged on the handle, only to find it locked. “Really?” she said aloud, totally annoyed that she happened to arrive at what seemed to be the shopkeeper’s lunch time. It was the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday for Merlin’s sake! Checking the hours that were stuck to the inside of the window, and then her watch, Maddie decided to camp out at a small table that was set in front of the shop. She only had to wait for half an hour at most. Any longer than that and she was going to call it a day. Her patience was already starting to wear thin. @sari ● 419 ● dans la nuit by Couer de Pirate MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. SARI WAS SIMPLY TIRED. TIRED of constantly repeating herself, telling others she was fine when she felt far from fine. Sure, school had finished for the summer and she was preparing to watch her older friends graduate in honour. But then the terror hit. Her sister and dozens of others caught in the explosion, and to add the icing on top, she watched one of her best friends get hit at a stupid party she didn’t even want to go to. What more could the Fawley ask for?
Ah yes. Her father sending her out on a stupid errand day for her younger siblings as if they didn’t have arms of their own. Sure, the Fawley stayed cooped up in her room for the start of the break, dealing with the loss of her closest sister and her father — and surprisingly her mother also — barely even cared. They moved on faster than one could say Merlin. Sari’s younger siblings had grown, sure, but not enough for the Fawley to be out alone and grab fitted robes for them. There were siblings older than her that could take on the job.
Slowing her pace as she neared the store, Sari looked up from the ground, tilting her head to the side once she saw a familiar face…One she hadn’t seen in a long while. ”Maddie?…” The brunette stood in disbelief, gazing at her friend who sat at the smaller table set in front of the shop. ”When did you?…” Sari trailed off, still confused to see the girl was actually alive. There had been too many rumours about Maddie, a few that she had died from something also. The Fawley was more than glad to discover the latter wasn’t true. Death was something she’s dealt with too much these days.

▲ Five minutes. That was all it took for her patience to start to waver. Time would have flown if her parents had gotten her the enchantment for her phone that she had asked for her birthday a month earlier. They didn’t ‘have the money’ for that. Their words, not hers. But selling and re-buying her school uniform fit into their budget somehow. Her phone was nothing more than a mere paperweight in Diagon Alley and she really didn’t know why she brought it in the first place. Out of habit seemed to be her only explanation. Currently, it was being spun around in circles on the table, which was proving to pass the time very, very slowly. Maddie didn’t even register her name being spoken at first, more interested in watching the phone come to an anticlimactic stop. She looked up to see Sari Fawley standing in front of her. “Oh…hey,” she said, boredom having completely liquefied her brain of any meaningful things to say back. Sari had started to ask about something else but failed to finish her sentence, and the French girl could only assume she meant to ask when she had gotten back to England. Abrupt disappearances did tend to lead to that question. “A week ago, I think…” she picked her phone up and unlocked it, as if that was going to give her the exact date of her return. “They’re closed for lunch, by the way,” she waved her hand at the locked store door. Sari was at least someone to talk to until the shopkeeper got back. The Weekly party had been useful in terms of getting an idea on what she had missed over the last six months, but the Fawley girl was more likely to give her the real details on everything. Unless dipping out unannounced in the way she had lost her brownie points with her former roommate. @sari ● 317 ● Happy To Be Here by Julien Baker MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. WITH NOTHING BUT SHOCK AND surprise still evident in Sari’s expression, the Fawley blinked profusely, still confused as to her once-disappeared friend was now…Back in her life. ”Hey…” She muttered out, eyes dropping to the ground as she listened. Looking up at the door and back over at Maddie, Sari nodded, stuffing her hands into her pockets. ”Oh right…I don’t need to urgently be in there anyway…” Doing her parents errands was the last thing she wanted to spend her day doing by any means.
”What…What happened?”

▲ What happened was a great question to be asked. She had already spilled the horrible truth about why she had left school to one of the Bainbridge triplets at the party, so there wasn’t really any harm telling Sari as well. There were other parts that needed to be protected from people for as long as possible, but the reason she had disappeared was at least owed to Sari. She would at least probably still be a friend. “I sort of got caught up in the dragon attack in Hogsmeade and had to spend time in the hospital,” Maddie explained, sitting up straighter in her chair and crossing her hands on the table. Even though she had little problem hyping up the injury when she talked about it at the party, it came out much more somber than she expected, and making eye contact with Sari was impossible. “You wouldn’t believe what fire from a dragon does to your skin complexion.” An awkward laugh escaped her, but she stopped it immediately. “I’m fine now though. My parents wanted me to transfer back to Beauxbatons, but it was easier just to come back here and repeat sixth year again. Treat the fall term as an exercise in getting back to normal, or something like that.” The real reason for coming back was because the family was bankrupt, but until that hit the papers nobody else needed to know. She had suffered enough humiliation from her brother and then this. Tacking on a life altering injury that was virtually unfixable also didn’t help, though it would distract almost anyone from what else was going on. “So I’m back. Yay.” She raised her hands up in the air to feign excitement, her tone equally unenthusiastic. Hogwarts was better than nothing though, and Sari would probably help her get back into the swing of things. @sari ● 311 ● Dans la nuit by Coeur De Pirate MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. WHILE SARI WAS CURIOUS AS to what happened, her typical behaviour, the feeling of doing nothing was overwhelming her especially when the brunette remembered what she was supposed to do in the area. Swaying back on her feet as the breeze continued to blow, the Fawley listened, nodding to show that she was. She cringed at the thought of being burnt from the dragons, and continued to do so at Maddie's dry laugh. Everyone around her seemed to do that lately, especially with the recent explosion and the loss of many, Laurel included.
"Good luck with repeating.." Sari murmured, raising a hand to scratch at the nape of her neck, unsure of what else to say. "I can help you...with the final exams we had...And any questions you might have.." Sari sat in an opposing chair near Maddie then, trying to force up a smile. "Did..." Sari trailed off, unsure if she should answer her question, but with a quiet clearing of her throat, the brunette continued. "Did you think..You'd die then?"

▲ “Thanks.” It was the perfect response to both of Sari’s statements, and solved them with only one word. Maddie knew it wasn’t going to be easy at first. There were going to be a lot of questions, which she had been hoping to sort of get out of the way with as many people as possible before going back. The party had served its purpose for that, and finding Sari prior to school was lucky. Having extra help would be good. She knew that she could take advantage of a few people for that already, though doing that to the other girl seemed a little cruel. Aside from their awkward first encounter, Sari had been fairly amenable for just about everything Maddie did and said around her. Very few others had acted in the same manner since she showed up at Hogwarts. The question that followed was definitely different, and not really like the girl to ask, but it sort of hit the topic of Maddie’s disappearance a little harder than anything else she had been asked thus far. “I don’t really know,” she answered, half shrugging as she crossed her arms in front of her tightly. “It sort of happened all at once, and there was the initial pain from the fire. And then I woke up in Mungo’s. You sort of know you’re alive when you can barely move without your whole back feeling like its ripping open…” The first week had been the worst, and she had been forced to stay on her stomach for as long as possible. While the back scars were bad, the ones on her legs had made walking terrible. Adding that to being bedridden for several weeks and she had to relearn how to walk. Talk about humiliating. “My brother dying at the end of the tournament last year hurt more though. It’s a bad comparison, but that’s what it felt like to me…” Her eyes flicked away from Sari as she also became quieter, opting to stare at the table instead. There were definitely more horrid things happening to people out there, but almost being burned alive by dragon fire wasn’t nearly as emotionally devastating as losing Émile was. “But no. I don’t think there was ever a moment where I actually thought I’d die.”@sari ● 384 ● Ease Out by softy MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. SARI HADN'T EXPECTED MADDIE TO be so vocal or open about her near death experience. She didn't want to know what it would feel like but as Maddie continued to go on, Sari's face only soured. The image of Maddie not being able to rise had stuck in Sari's mind, flashing like images she had seen before and the whole ordeal reminded the Fawley of how her sister died in the explosion. All she could consider was how scared Laurel must have been and how fast it must have been before her elder sister died. Clearing her throat once Maddie trailed off, the brunette nodded slowly, showing that she was still listening to her story.
"Oh right.." Sari distantly murmured, looking down at the table she noticed Maddie was looking at also. "I'm...Sorry all of this happened.." There was nothing else the Fawley could even say, especially now her mind fixated on linking the details between Maddie's incident to her sisters death.

▲ “Thanks,” Maddie mumbled once again, continuing her thousand yard stare down at the table. She was starting to think that her one-word response was going to get used a lot, depending on who she was speaking too. The real question she had though, was whether or not she had blabbered on too much about it. It was a lot harder to be straightforward with Sari than it had been with other classmates she had bumped into since coming back to London. Maddie didn’t know if the two of them were considered friends, or if close acquaintances fit better. Being roommates the prior year made it a lot easier, but now she was virtually on her own. Held back to repeat sixth year once again. It sucked. She knew she should have put in the effort to complete her coursework whilst in the hospital, but it was impossible to even move her arms when the scarring was still fresh. At least the fall term would be easier than it had been the first time around. Spending time catching up on what she had missed was more important anyways, now that her soul was basically sold to Hogwarts. Returning to Beauxbatons would be too shameful. Maddie tapped her nails on the table a few times to try and break out of the awkwardness she had definitely just caused. Clearing her throat, she continued, “I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, is all. Couldn’t really do anything about it.” She imagined her brother had fallen into the same circumstances, except where she had people assisting and helping her, he was stuck on a burning, falling carriage. In a way, she was lucky, even if dragons were considered the deadliest of magical creatures. Even if she had wanted to fight back against them, what would that have accomplished? She turned and ran because that was all she could do at the time. While it didn’t work out in the end, it certainly prevented her from dying. That had to count for something. “I can show you the scars when we get back to school, if you want to see them,” she added, as if her injuries were now a side-show attraction. “I don’t know how many people can say they got burned by dragon fire and walked away from it.” Aside from dragonologists and a few others there that day, probably not many. Deflecting her problem with her ego was sadly too easy now, but it was really the only way to move on from it all. @sari ● 427 ● Exile by Taylor Swift MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. MADELEINE'S REPLY WAS QUICK AND soon enough, Sari found herself caught up in her head again. She tapped her fingers against the table, trying to stay in touch with reality while simply exploring her thoughts, realising how selfish she had been in the months she hadn't seen her friend. She simply believed Maddie was off somewhere, enjoying herself and doing whatever it was she enjoyed doing aside from learning certain things within Hogwarts. She felt like a bad friend...If that was what she could call herself, and even now, knowing with everything that happened to Maddie she would probably have to start from square one.
Like Sari's own actions, Maddie too tapped her nails on the table, probably trying to destroy the awkward silence that had formed between them. She didn't mind it, especially since nothing was coming out of her mouth that she wanted to say anyway. At Maddie's words, Sari tried to smile small but the thought of her sister only took over. "Just like Laurel..." She mumbled, playing with her fingers in hopes that the other Hufflepuff hadn't heard what she said. "You don't have to.." Sari added, lifting her head now to smile small at Madeleine. "I genuinely believe you...And I'm glad you're alive." Even if Madeleine didn't believe the two of them were close, Sari was glad to actually know someone that had faced an event rather traumatic and walk out of it alive. "So what about school?...With the repeating?..Do you think they'll let you off the hook a little?.."

▲ She had no idea who Laurel was, but it sounded to her like they had maybe gotten caught up in the dragon thing as well. There had been others around Maddie that had definitely been as injured or worse, though from the news reports, apparently no one had died. Compared to everything else that had happened over the last few years, it was odd to call that a silver-lining. But she felt like she could do that, only because the combination of dragons terrorizing a village and people dying usually went hand in hand. She supposed it had to do with security from Hogwarts being close and the fact that there were plenty of competent Ministry workers at the winter festival that could assist as well. If Émile had been alive still, he probably would have taken it as a challenge. She could imagine that he would say a dragon was nothing compared to the chimera or the yeti he fought in the tournament. On the other hand, his bold foolishness was bound to get him in trouble one of these days. One could argue that going head on with a dragon without proper training would end in a swift death… Maddie was lost in her thoughts of other ways that her brother could have died, had it not been done in the explosion, so she didn’t hear Sari at first when it came to what was going to happen with school now. All she could was shrug when she came back to reality and pieced together what she had heard. “I don’t know,” she let out a deep, exaggerated sigh, “My parents seem to think I’ll need extra time getting back into school and all that. I guess having me almost dying made them realize how shitty they are. And now they suddenly care about everything I do.” That and they were broke, so they had literally nothing else to pay attention to other than her grades. She had a feeling that they were going to be even more suffocating now that they were bored out of their minds. “Do you think I’ll be able to get away with turning in the same papers as last year? I bet I can learn a charm to scrub the grades and notes away from them…” The only professor that would be smart enough to notice that happening, would be Professor Zabini. He scared her more than anything, and she already had a feeling he’d treat her like any other repeat, even if it wasn’t entirely her fault. @sari ● 426 ● The Forsaken Effigy by Shadow Of Intent MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. REALISING QUICKLY THAT MADELEINE PROBABLY had no clue who Laurel was, Sari's lips thinned out while her mind begin to think. Surely she had discussed her many siblings once or twice to the other Hufflepuff, but even then Sari didn't feel too certain about anything lately. Even then, Laurel had been a part of the Hogwarts Staff at once point. But the younger Fawley just wished she had spoken more about her sister, and not now when it felt too guilt ridden to do so. Instead of clarifying the details, Sari continued to sit there awkwardly, avoiding Madeleine's gaze and simply continued to listen to her. The event was still fresh in her mind as well, simply happening just weeks prior to the girls reunion, but it felt too...odd to mention, especially since Madeleine had her scare with the dragons just months prior.
Sari kind of agreed with the opinion of her friend's parents. She opened her mouth at first to respond before slowly closing it. But with enough confidence, Sari said anyway: "They're kind of right Maddie.." The brunette muttered out, continuing to avoid her gaze. "You...Almost died. And you've been out of school for quite a while...What's wrong with some exert time? Sure...They're shitty for only caring now but...Is it not better to care in the long run over not caring even if you were dead?" The question in air reflected more on Sari's own family as they all took Laurel's death for granted. They cared for a day before moving on. No grieving, nothing. And Laurel was the first born of them all.
At Maddie's question, Sari wanted to laugh, but instead her smile rose slightly. "I doubt it...I hear Professor Zabini is marking this year." Whether it was true or not, Sari was unsure. But doing something that reckless and...somewhat stupid didn't add up in Sari's eyes. Maddie wouldn't of even considered such a thing before.

▲ The real reason her parents only cared now, six months after her near-death experience, was because they were poorer than dirt and had nothing else to focus on outside of their bending bankruptcy hearings and the likes. And it really wasn’t like they actually cared. They never had. Things wouldn’t have gotten to this point if they actually did. Sure, they probably still would have been broke and forced to sell everything off, but at least it wouldn’t have been as horrible an experience. She was lucky that things were still normal in December when it happened, otherwise she was afraid they would have left her to deal with everything on her own. That was what they had always done. Didn’t want to deal with helping her or Émile with grades between school years? Hire a bunch of tutors that would come every day, all summer, until school started back up again. The only reason she liked the winter home so much was because there were other students’ families that had vacation homes in the same vicinity and she would be able to escape her own family. Émile’s death barely changed anything, even if she tried to convince herself that it did. “Not really. I’m not even something to worry about as it is. They’re too busy with financial things…” she trailed off, knowing that if she continued any more she would be spilling the real secret she was hiding. Even if this was Sari, there was still the chance that someone else would overhear it. She wanted to at least make it to school before the news actually broke. The professors would stop the worst of the ridicule, if there was any. At Beauxbatons, they probably wouldn’t have prevented it at all, assuming Beauxbatons would have let her back for a repeat year in the first place. She sort of doubted it. Maddie groaned as her friend said Zabini was definitely going to be closely watching everything. At least she remembered most of the subjects from the fall term. “Great,” she rolled her eyes. “He’s so difficult with everything. Je ne comprends pas. I don’t understand why. And he’s probably going to give me more reading so that I’m ahead of the curve or something.” At least she didn’t have to deal with some of the annoyances of her former classmates. The real problem was that she didn’t know any of the now sixth year Hufflepuffs, and dealing with learning even more insignificant names was always a pain. @sari ● 419 ● An Ancient Sign of Coming Storm by Amon Amarth MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. WHILE SARI DIDN'T KNOW EVERYTHING behind Maddie's incident and near-death experience, the anger that boiled within the Fawley was enough for the brunette to relieve the memories as to when she found out Laurel had been killed from the sporting event just a few months ago. Her father, while he seemed distraught, brushed off the incident in a matter of days, claiming the family needed to return to their old state despite losing the eldest member of the Fawley children.
Balling her hands into slight fists as she tried to push away the memory and pay more attention on her 'friend', Sari found herself nodding. Nodding in understanding and to simply show that she was paying attention. "Still...Despite them being completely shit they...ended up paying some kind of attention in the long run right?..No matter how short it was.." Sari knew she wasn't making sense, and in any ordinary scenario she would most likely agree with Maddie. But with the grief of her own sister being enough to cloud her own judgement...Well. Sari just wasn't her usual self anymore.
Looking up at the other Hufflepuff groaned, the brunette tried to force a small smile before looking down at her fingers. "Don't you usually like being ahead anyway?..If I remember correctly that is.."

▲ All she could do was shrug at Sari’s question. Was that what being paid attention to was like? Because she knew what it was like to have the attention on her due to pampering, and what it came down to when she actually needed real, emotional help. It had taken the accident and subsequent financial ruin for her to realize that both she and Émile were only statistics, and their parents love had come from a place of business potential. Émile would have had the title of a Triwizard Tournament champion back home, even though he wasn’t the ultimate winner. That would have brought money into the family business had he survived. Plus there was whatever else he was good at. She, on the other hand, had nothing. Material possessions amounted to nothing anymore, and what she used to be able to flaunt was long gone. Just like her parents’ attention. “If you mean by visiting me in the hospital once a week, sure. That was attention I guess,” she muttered. At the time, she had reasoned that they really didn’t need to be there every day, because there was literally nothing to do. She had to lie on her stomach for the first few weeks as the burns healed, and watching TV all day with her got nothing done. The gift showering that came after would have been nice, if not for the fact that it was all gone now too. School, which had never been this way for her, seemed to be the only saving grace now. It would remove her from her parents, and she could choose to stay at Hogwarts instead of going ‘home’. Not that there was one to go to anymore, or even money to go on vacation somewhere. But she was not looking forward to repeating at all, despite what Sari seemed to think. “I’ll be ahead for the sixth years, sure. But I’ll still be behind by a whole year of where I’m supposed to be.” She wasn’t sure what sort of rumors, if any, would pop up about why she was suddenly gone and back again, but she knew that she was going to have to get ahead of them. At least before the news of the business going under. Thankfully the Chevalier name wasn’t a household name in the UK, and very little French news seemed to be passed on to the newspapers here. @sari ● 404 ● Tentpole Shangrila by Djo MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
