Aura had figured that things would feel a bit off after the Quidditch final – witnessing something like that meant that the images didn’t just go away fast. But really, she thought she’d be better than this – getting emotional at seemingly random times with feelings that didn’t quite match what she was doing, or thoughts flitting across her mind that weren’t quite right for the situation at hand. For a long while, weeks after, she wrote it off as some sort of odd trauma from the match. She’d certainly been sticking extra close to her twin since then, and she felt an odd sort of anxiety when he was out-of-sight.
But seriously, this was too much. Speaking to her father earlier in the summer had been insane. He’d been chattering about guests they would be hosting soon, and for most of the conversation Aura couldn’t keep a smile off her face at something that was making her happy. Except that wasn’t quite right, because she despised the idea of having to host people and be a nicely-behaved dinner guest. But, that didn’t justify the almost-tears that quickly followed – Aura had felt her spirits plummet rapidly and she’d had to excuse herself from the conversation before any tears could escape. The whole experience had been odd -- Aura usually didn't feel much of anything during conversations with her father, and the out-of-nowhere happiness and sudden depression had been jarring. Still, she let it be -- going back to school soon meant she wouldn't have to deal with this until Christmas.
There was nothing that could get her back on-track better than schoolwork. She and Silver were quietly studying, her brother bent over the Charms book she’d been reviewing earlier while Aura took a stab at some DADA work. The twins had hit a nice study rhythm, so the sound of her brother interrupting to ask if she'd noticed any weird things was annoying. Every day of my life, she responded mentally with a similarly invisible eye-roll, unwilling to vocalize the snarky comment. But when Silver caught his breath, as if he could hear her or something, that made Aura look at him and freeze as she absorbed the fact that he had, in fact, not spoken out-loud at all. Wide-eyed, Aura tried thinking, You heard that? and her brother’s reaction said everything.
