Summer 2021
Layla sighed. Her guitar was broken again. It wasn’t her fault this, not really anyway. She’d tripped and knocked it over and now she saw a knob had flown off somewhere in her room—which would probably be found the next time she moved furniture around. It had happened at least once or twice anytime she replaced the strings and removed the bridge pins on her acoustic guitar. They required some force and if you weren’t careful, they got launched somewhere across the room. It wasn’t a surprise though. Her beloved old electric was old indeed and she was reminded of this every time she hit the toggle switch and it didn’t respond. Probably some faulty wiring or just a bad switch, regardless she couldn’t quite afford the repairs alongside the parts. Her parents were already giving her a hard time for not finding a “real job” but she was determined to play music.
She gathered the old guitar, looking at the various bumps from all the years she’d owned it. Really, she wanted a new guitar, but it was cheaper to replace the small pieces that broken or just not use them. One didn’t really need the tremolo arm, not all the electric guitars had them. With her guitar bag slung over her shoulder she entered a small shop. It was a small music shop but one that she had visited before. She took a breath, they knew her here, but it was one of the few times she used her looks to her advantage and thanked her mother for her abilities even if she was only a quarter-veela. Walking in the door chimed to let the usually one or two employees know that someone was there, and she didn’t recognize the young man behind the counter. It was the summertime so she figured he could be at least seventh year—so not that much younger than Layla herself.
”Hi! I wanted to ask about some repairs.” She greeted him happily and with a smile and he seemed to need a second before he could respond. ”Umm—yes—I can help you. What did you need?” He stammered as Layla kept looking at him, but she took her guitar out of the bag and gently laid it on the counter. ”Yea, I definitely need new strings and the volume knob flew off earlier today.” He nodded his head, though it wasn’t abundantly clear if he was actually hearing what she was saying versus just trying to act normal—there was a faint blush on his cheeks. ”Yea, so I actually come here a lot. I was wondering if you guys could help me out with the strings and the small parts I need?” The boy looked around nervously and seemed to forget his words. Layla knew he would need some encouragement, so she learned forward onto the glass counter with her elbow and rested her face on her hand while the other laid on the counter casually. ”Whaddya say?” She quickly looked him up and down and then slowly smiled at him. He blushed a darker shade of pink and finally found his words.
”I think that should be fine, it should be ready in a couple of hours.” Layla had to block the urge to jump with joy, it would certainly save her some money and time and she maintained a big smile on her face. ”Thank you….Daniel. I’ll be back soon.” She responded, reading the name off the tag on his shirt. Though she didn’t try to flaunt this often, she knew when she could make it work to her advantage.
