Summer, 1925; Late Evening
Degare remembered every vampire he ever met; one could never be sure when you might see them again. Their lives were long and the world was small, and remembering names and faces was always a useful skill regardless of occupation or status. This new face was...different, somehow. Degare didn't have the time to dwell on why that might have been, too concerned with tracking his next meal over whatever spark of familiarity he encountered. The girl he was following was a pretty thing, slightly intoxicated, but alert enough that Degare didn't feel guilty about coercing an unwilling victim. She thought she knew what would happen, and apparently she wasn't afraid, if her bubbly laugh and lyrical calls were anything to go by. Mostly, they were just in search of a secluded enough corner to be undisturbed for a little while.
Degare grinned, wolfish and pleased, as he followed her down the dirty alleys of New York. Her sequined dress twinkled in the light from the moon, and her clutch dangled from a slim wrist as she used a wall for balance. The streets were mostly deserted this time of night, everyone either tucked in bed at home or still out at one of the growing number of night clubs. His fangs caught the light as he stalked closer, and she finally sparked a split second of fear before it was blown away by another giggle.
She was easy enough to draw away from her friends, a few drinks in her and a whispered word or two in her ear and she was dragging him outside. Granted, she may have initially thought it was just him playing some part of a mysterious stranger, but it was too late to back out now. The actual bite was quick and his meal tensed briefly at the sting of it, but she relaxed quick enough and Degare made sure not to take long. He truly wasn't fond of lingering with someone he only pursued for the bite, and never mixed a meal with...other things. Crossed too many wired in everyone's head when he did that.
Degare sent the girl back to her friends when he was done, they had only made it about a block from the club anyhow and he couldn't be bothered to escort her all the way home himself. He was just tucking his handkerchief back into the pocket of his jacket when he heard the sound of footsteps behind him. "Checking to make sure I didn't kill her?" he questioned, amused. "I promise she'll be just fine. It's nothing she couldn't afford to lose, anyway."
The man--vampire--frowned briefly. "You're different from the others I've met."
"Is that a compliment?" Degare smirked. "You're young yet, I'm sure you'll meet many more just like me." He patted the boy on the cheek as he walked past.
"Take me with you," he called. "Teach me."
Degare sighed and turned on his heels, smirk still in place. "What's your name, child?" Because he was one. Young still, probably half Degare's own age if he had to guess.
The boy squared his shoulders, like it might add some air of authority. "I'm Albright. Albright Desmond." He grinned then, and oh. Oh dear. Degare knew that feeling.
