overall personality:
Upon first meeting Viola, someone would probably get the impression that they were… skittish. They are constantly fluttering and fidgeting, and generally have the appearance of being ill-at-ease. This is a relatively recent aspect of their personality, an unfortunate after-effect of the trauma they suffered when the Durmstrang ship exploded. Despite looking flighty, Viola remains a relatively grounded person. They have no time for flights of fancy, and don’t have patience for people who are constantly thinking about the future. Viola has, unfortunately, become a pessimist and finds it difficult to talk to people who are optimistic about the future. The past was shit, so why would the future be any better?
Viola is a blunt person; they don’t mince their words for any reason, even to protect people’s feelings. They have a deep appreciation for the truth and consider themself above lying… at least about facts. Viola’s discovered they’re much worse at being honest about their own feelings than they are about basically anything else. They have keen skills of observation, but again, this is rather limited when it comes to the emotional states of other people. They’re good at reading basic body language, but sometimes misinterpret its meaning or find themself unable to react properly.
Viola considers themself a loner, but a loner who loves people deeply. One of the things they learned after almost dying is that life is precious, and sometimes they find themself amazed about the world and the life in it. Viola wants to protect life, but they just aren’t sure how to do it anymore. One of their goals in life is to find where they belong, a purpose… and they kind of hope that purpose has something to do with helping the world they’ve only recently discovered is beautiful.

history:
Viola was born to a struggling actress and a wildly successful radio host. From the beginning there was friction in their parents’ marriage, mostly centered on how their mother could never seem to get her big break and their father was left supporting their growing family almost entirely on his own. Viola wasn’t really aware of how tense it was – no child really is – but they weren’t shocked when their parents split when their little sister was two years old, either. It was better that way, in an entirely nonironic fashion. Their mother could spend all the time in the world looking for roles, since their father was granted custody of both children almost entirely based on the fact that he actually had an income.
Growing up, Viola didn’t see their mother much. The woman wasn’t exactly flighty – she just forgot how little she stopped by. Since both Viola and their little sister were magical, there was additional element of cultural disconnect; magic was an important part of their lives, and they didn’t know how to talk with their Muggle mother about anything other than music and musicals. Part of why Viola began learning Muggle pop culture was so they could have something to talk with their mother about, but that still didn’t help them in becoming close to each other – she just wasn’t around enough for a meaningful rapport to be built.
Going to Durmstrang was a relief for Viola, because they had an excuse not to limp through awkward confrontations with them mother. they soon found out that it wasn’t as easy as they expected; for one thing, them father’s radio show was immensely popular, and they was pegged as his daughter early on in them school experience. other kids seemed to want to be them friend just for the connections they had, and that didn’t sit well with them. another problem with them father’s popularity was that he was also well known for being on the more liberal end of magical issues, especially for a magical district that was still more conservative and strict. some of viola’s classmates (and teachers) were wary of them spreading “liberal propaganda” and thus avoided them.
Other than the period of adjustment, though, Viola’s school experience was fine. It wasn’t particularly spectacular, but they did well enough in their classes. Once they realized it was easier for them to be on the outskirts of things, life got even better. They were happier and more at ease, though they still felt like something was missing. The missing part came in their fourth year at school, when she joined the school’s newspaper. They devoured the chance to be able to investigate and tell the truth, and that became their new passion. Despite that, though, Viola knew that they could never be a newspaper reporter; they weren’t nice enough to people to be able to finagle answers out of them and their writing style was too dense and straightforward for most readers. They began to wonder what job they would be good at, but didn’t get many answers.
site events reaction:
Viola came to Hogwarts with Durmstrang as a potential Champion for the Triwizard Tournament. They weren’t selected as Champion, but did use the time at Hogwarts to refine their political beliefs and learn more about what had happened in Great Britain before their arrival.
The explosions at the end of the school year changed that. Viola survived, but they were not spared. Nearly drowning after witnessing an explosion, along with knowing that most of their classmates hadn’t survived, tore Viola’s mind apart. They went mute for a long period of time, but even that wasn’t enough to fully process everything that’d happened to them. Viola tried to stay in England for their younger sibling’s sake, but it quickly became evident they needed to get away. Viola went backpacking across Muggle Europe, then to the States, and then… other places. They heard scraps of news from their father and sibling, but they were too focused on trying to forget everything that happened to them to give much thought to what was happening back on the other side of the world.
Now with the appearance of the Wyrdness, Viola is hopeful that there might be an answer to their problems. They’ve felt weird for too long now, and they’re planning to move back to Great Britain at least long enough to see if Yrsile can heal their ailments.
