January 2nd, 2026  She didn't want to do this again. She paced in the back room, waiting for all the members of Heliopath to arrive and wait for her in the meeting space on the other side of that door. She heard them entering, going through the necessary precautions, mutters wondering what the meeting was about. She looked down at her hands, feeling like an electricity was building up in them. She looked up at herself in the mirror on the wall and quickly looked away. She could already see it, her skin growing tighter around her bones, the light leaving her eyes. She thought of Jim and a slight smile crept onto her face. Then it immediately became a frown. She'd have to tell him about this too and just like Teddy last time she'd gotten sick - Jim would want to be by her side and take care of her and she'd feel guilty every second. And Teddy... oh gods, Teddy... She wrapped a hand around her wand in her pocket, one last time, then let it go. She clenched her shaking fists, took a deep breath, and entered the room. Everyone reacted a little differently to seeing how different she looked. Shaken, her resolve diminishing. Victoire had always displayed confidence (and recklessness) in their meetings. But now they saw a broken person before them, small pieces of someone they knew, trying to stay in tact just for one more moment. "My friends, family, comrades..." she started, trying to sound like her normal, eloquent self. The Minister of Magic self, the leader of Heliopath self, the self who wanted to murder Elaine Dupree were she stood. She shook her head, a tear streaming down her cheek as she looked down at her hands. "I-I'm sorry. I know this seems sudden," she couldn't bear to look at anyone, so her shuffling hands would have to do. Especially not Dom... not Luke... "some of you may know that when I was the Minister of Magic I got sick. It's a rare illness, one that means I cannot use magic, and I -" she choked on a sob, "I can't be here anymore. I've done this once before. I stepped away from everything I loved to protect myself and the world I wanted to save. This time will be different, though," she raised her eyes to finally make eye contact slowly with those in the room. "I'll have to do a lot of this on my own, but I won't shut you all out like last time. I will support you in anything, I love you," her eyes settled on Dominique last. She had told her cousins and sister about this before the meeting, but it still was difficult to do this in front of them. She sniffled, shaking her head and turning to Claire Slater. "I'll be passing the responsibilities of leadership onto Claire. Trust me," her voice did not waver, "when I saw that she knows what needs to be done and is capable and willing. She is brave, smart and will make a great leader to you all. We will still be in contact, trust me on that, but Claire," she smiled, holding a hand out to gesture to Claire, "will lead the next part of our journey into greatness."
"Don't be afraid," she sniffed again, turning her attention back to those in the room. " And please understand I need a few days to talk things over with my... husband and to process everything." She felt the threads of her self control unraveling again. She smiled softly, holding out hands out, palms up, "take my situation as further proof that none of us are gods," her tone darkened, "especially not Elaine Dupree."She didn't stay to chat after the announcement, but quickly made her way home. She was sick of walking, of avoiding magic. So she decided to apparate one last time... and promptly passed out on her hardwood floors.
