Buenos Aires, Argentina
How she had let her friends talk her into going through with auditioning for an actual singing competition remained a mystery to Carmen, though there she was, in Buenos Aires, and almost to the point of no return. She was lucky that she had managed to talk a few of her friends from Castelobruxo into coming with her for moral support, not that they could stand there in the audition room with her. That would be the hard part, waiting to find out their reactions and hoping that they would be able to hear how she had performed from behind a closed door. She turned, glancing at the signs and knowing that she would have to step forward sooner or later.
Her mind was flooded with thoughts. She had come all the way there. If she were to turn back, then nothing would change; her life would stay the same, wouldn't it? Sure, her grades at Castelobruxo weren't fantastic, but she could get by. What was she thinking, coming all the way to Buenos Aires? She looked back at her friends, wringing her hands. It helped a little bit, considering how cold it was, but still… "I can't do this. I can't go in. No way!" It wasn't technically chickening out if she didn't even go inside, was it?
"Of course you can!" A redheaded girl, Malena, encouraged her cheerfully.
Carmen continued to fret in spite of the words of support, pacing back and forth on the pavement. "What if I mess up?" Then what? What if she were to trip and fall flat on her face in front of the people who were judging her audition and didn't even get the opportunity to sing for them? Everyone at school would find out. "What if I go in there and completely ruin everything?"
Malena turned to Carolina, who was standing beside her, to back her up. Carolina obliged, taking Carmen by the shoulders at the first opportunity. "Girl, be serious. You know you're the best singer at Castelobruxo…"
"I sing in the shower," Carmen protested quickly. "I don't sing for an audience. I just wanted to get a gig in—I don't know—a café or something, maybe. I mean, hundreds of people might see me…"
"And they'll hear what an amazing singer you are," Malena reminded her, interjecting quickly.
Carolina took her hands off of Carmen's shoulders. "You've been talking about this for weeks!"
Carmen sighed; she guessed that they had a few good points. She couldn't turn back. She would go in there and audition and maybe not get rejected at the first note. If she did get rejected, she supposed that that would be better than not trying at all. "Okay," she decided, drawing in a deep breath and letting it out. "I can do this."
After what felt like the longest wait of her life, she had made it into the audition room itself. Her heart raced, and she was terrified of blowing it all at the last moment. Still, she had left any chance of turning back outside with Malena and Carolina. She put one foot in front of the other and miraculously didn't trip as she opened the door and walked to the center of the room.
"Hi," Carmen breathed through her smile, fiddling with the paper with the number that had been pinned to the hem of her shirt.
"Hi. Could you give us your name, your age, where you're from, and what you'll be singing for us today?""
Carmen breathed out. Her name. She could do that. "I'm María del Carmen… Kirchner… I'm sixteen years old. I'm from Córdoba, and I'll be singing 'Magic Works' by the Weird Sisters…"
